24 Mar 2020 · 20 min
Tracy O'Malley argues that reading self-help books rarely changes behavior without guided integration. She uses the Enneagram as a map for self-awareness and explains why you need a coach to turn insights into actual results and resilience during crises.

Hello. Hello. We got another episode of Enneattalk Tuesday.
And today. You know, I wanted to talk about something that I see all the time. And I know that if you are into personal development at all, this probably rings true to you. I know there are so many of you that have spent thousands and thousands of dollars and many, many, many, many hours working on personal development. You're going to events and conferences, listening to even these kind of podcasts and thinking that it's going to help you grow. And absolutely it does. Maybe, though not in the way that you want it to, maybe not monetarily, maybe you still notice that you have self sabotaging patterns. Maybe you take and five back. I see it all the time. And for many of you we are living in the land of personal development. And I am a first generation personal development, er, if that is even a word. My parents didn't grow up with it, so it really wasn't present in our home like my kids. They have it at their fingertips. They have a mom that shit teaches it, talks it travels for it, you know, and they have that, which is amazing. The kids today have it. But sometimes too much information can do more harm than good. And you've heard me say it many, many times on several, several episodes. Information doesn't necessarily mean transformation. And a lot of times when we are inundated with so much stuff, you know, we kind of operate in the mentality, let's throw all this shit up at the wall and hope something sticks. And then if something actually we don't even know what the hell it was that we did, that stuck, right? I see it all the time. Or we become so overwhelmed with so many different things and then we have the Instagram feed and all the social media and Susie on Instagram is crushing it from going to one Tony Robbins event, and we're like, what the fuck? How is personal development working for them and not me? Well, I want you to know that you're not the only one. First and foremost, Susie on Instagram is having a shit show behind the scenes. And I'm not judging her because I do too. Like, I have a daily little shit show from time to time. And that's okay. That's part of growing. The difference is understanding what the shit show is about, where it's rooted, what.
To do with it, what it means.
All the things, right? So there's so many reasons why your personal development work may not be helping. It's all the reasons. Reasons I said. And you've heard me talk about it, maybe on my Instagram stories or even here on a podcast that, you know, if you don't know how to integrate all this incredible information, even if you got two or three golden nuggets and you don't know how to integrate it, it's kind of pointless. And actually, it probably frustrates you more than when you didn't know jack, right? I know for me, because I know better in pretty much every area of my life. If I'm not doing better, it flat out pisses me off. And it was way easier to be ignorant to all of this. Granted, my life was a train wreck. I was angry all the time. I was a loose cannon. You know, people were afraid of me, you know, all the things. So how can you get your personal development, all this work that you're doing, to actually work for you? Well, one of the things that has helped me and, you know, since this is Ennea Talk Tuesday. Yeah, the Enneagram can help in this way because when we have this personal development, you get a golden nugget from, you know, any of the amazing people that are out there doing so much teaching on how to better yourself. And please know, like, I respect the hell out of the real solid people out there doing it. What I do have a problem with is those that don't tell the truth and the whole truth, right. That they had to overcome a lot of old belief systems or they had to do the work to really understand where a lot of these behaviors that were taking them off track came from and how they actually navigate those strategy is great. And information and morning routines and affirmations and all that's really great. Until hell breaks loose. It happens all the time. All of a sudden, all hell breaks loose and your affirmations fly out the window. The morning routine Takes a shit. Right? Right. Can I get an amen? All of you guys out there right now, you know that happens. Well, I will let you know. 2019 for me was hands down my most challenging, painful, hurtful, hard year. And I've spent a lot of money on personal development and well over. I've been at it 19 years, but hardcore. And life happens. Life happens all the time. And my personal development goes to work for me. And a lot of that has to do with understanding myself. That self awareness piece by using the Enneagram. And I know there's a lot of you Enneagram haters out there and you're listening right now, and that's okay. I get it, you know, you don't want to say I'm a type. I don't want. I don't want to say I'm a type. I don't want to put myself in a box. And I get that. I was there. However, if you can understand your internal soul personal roadmap, when all hell does break loose, knowing that you have some certain guidelines and indicators that things are going sideways, let me tell you, you can course correct before things go south fast. And with 2019 under my belt, thank God, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Even though it was hard and painful, I learned so much about myself and I gained new levels of personal awareness about myself. And every time I'm fac. Facing something challenging or really, really scary, you know, even though in my mind I want it to go a certain way because I'm human, you know, I'm not just like completely all the way, all the time surrendered to every process I do. But I don't want to. I have it in my mind how I want things to go. However, knowing what I know about myself and having the tool, the Enneagram and mastering self awareness, I know that even if it goes a different way, I'm going to learn something about myself. And when I learn something about myself, really good shit happens on the other side of that. And when I learn more about myself, I'm able to make a bigger impact in the world, right? And when you are able to make a bigger impact in the world, a lot of times that means that shows up in your bottom line. Which, you know, that's a bonus to me. A lot of the things I do today are just to not only better myself, but to help others be better. And every time that I selflessly kind of move forward with that as my main goal, the bottom line grows. So I'm just saying it so a Lot of times, even those of you that are familiar with the Enneagram, and I see y', all, you're posting the memes and the little quote cards, which are great. I think information is important. The more information that you have about yourself that helps you have a better understanding of yourself, that can be really, really great or it can be too much where you don't start operating off of instincts as well. And that's where I come in. And this is why for the last eight years or so, I've been studying the Enneagram. I've been integrating the Enneagram into my own personal life. And with my family and with my health and with my personal relationships, I've integrated into all business practices. I've used it in leadership and sales in and marketing and leadership development. I've used it, integrated it in all of that. The problem with you that you're having right now and your personal development is maybe you need a guide to tell you what to do with all this information, right? And the podcasts are great, and the events are great and the books are great and the courses and all the things are great. And there are some great coaches out there too. But very, very few actually will hold your hand and, and show you how to integrate it into your life. Because you know what? It's really fucking hard and it takes a lot of time. They'd much rather just say, just do this strategy. Good luck, see you later. Thanks for the cash. Just being really, really honest with you. Not all of them. And here's the thing, also, a lot of them don't know how to integrate the real hard stuff when all hell's breaking loose, right? It's real easy for Susie on Instagram to coach you and give you strategy on a sales technique. Meanwhile, you just found out your husband's cheating on you and your kids are, you know, losing their sh and your autoimmune disease is flaring up. You know, all the strategy in the world isn't going to help you navigate that. And you're not going to be very clear eyed, clear headed, clear heart when you're going through that. So what I love about the Enneagram and integrating it, and for those of you that are researching the Enneagram on your own, by all means, continue to do that. I think that that's helpful. But if you need that, if you need to move the needle fast, move it fast like yesterday. Just reach out to me. Let me show you how to actually use this in your life so you can move the needle really really quickly, whether it's in your family, in your business, in your health, whatever that looks like for you. I know for a fact in my life, I didn't have anybody teaching me the Enneagram and integration. But I have had guides in my life constantly for eight years. And I have done my own research on the Enneagram. And, you know, when they're helping me with other things, my own kind of integration of the Enneagram has really helped that. And that's why I know that I am the best out there on integration of the Enneagram and all the things I don't know. Especially if you're in business. Most of you guys enter personal development to grow a business, whether it's a network marketing business or, you know, you're an online coach or you're. You put on events or a podcast. You know, I think it's great that we live in a world today that personal development is at the forefront. And I also know that a lot of you are starting to get a little nervous because the ROI on your investment in personal development, although you feel better at times, you are not seeing your bottom line changing. And where I am different in regards to the Enneagram than anybody out there, there are amazing people giving you information. There's great therapists and pastors and enthusiasts that have spent hours and hours and hours learning and studying the Enneag Enneagram. And I love them. I learned from them, too. However, there is nobody that I know that can show you how to integrate it and that has actually used it to build multimillion dollar businesses. And it's the integration, right? There's nothing like a guide taking you through a process. Right? And if you're like me, you know, I think I talked about this on my Instagram stories recently. You know, if you look at the NBA or the NFL and you see the coaches on the sidelines, you can take one look at those guys and know that they have never played in the NFL. Most of them. Right. And actually the ones that have suck as coaches. Right. So the job of a coach is to teach you strategy. Strategy can be very, very helpful and really, really important. But it's only part of it, right.
For me. Especially when we're dealing with money, business, life, relationships, parenting, health. I for a fact, want somebody that has walked the journey before me. They're the only people I will take advice from. And if they've walked the journey and have the results that I want, so that leaves very slim pickings for who I will actually take advice From, Right. And so for somebody like me, who has pretty much lived out everything, you know, I think I've said this before. The only kind of life thing I have not had to walk personally, I've helped people walk it, but I have not personally walked it, is losing a child. But other than that, you name it, this girl's been through it. And so being able to integrate using the Enneagram when life happens and not have it derail your business. Most of you didn't even know I was in crisis last year because I still showed up every day. I still showed up for my business, not faking it or power my way through it like I used to. I was feeling all the things, I was healing all the things I was, you know, leaning into my support system and still showing up. How many of you have had a life crisis happen? Even something like health your own personal health, you're not feeling well and it's hard to show up. I've been there. I've been there. And, you know, knowing myself so well, using the Enneagram, it is, hands down, the greatest self awareness tool. Wouldn't you agree that if you have a roadmap to head to a destination, you can pretty much plug in the coordinates on our iPhone or our GPS and know that we're going to get there. The Enneagram can work the same way, but you have to really understand it. You have to know the ins and outs of you. Right? Before I could start integrating this with other people and teaching it to other people, I needed to understand myself. And I work with a lot of high powered CEOs and business professionals that want me to come in and help with their teams and network marketing leaders that want me to come in and fix their team or families, fix my kids. And I say the same thing every time. It always starts with you. Leadership is always at the, you know, it always starts at the top. And if you want the people that you care about, the people that you're leading, the people that you employ to move the needle, then you're going to have to move your own first. And so understanding the Enneagram and having somebody show you how to integrate it, I believe is the fastest way to having all this personal development that you're doing actually work for you. So if you have been one of those, let's raise our hand right now. How many of you guys have been to at least one event? Okay, I felt all of you raise your hand. How many of you guys have listened to a podcast? Well, you're listening to Mine. So that counts. How many of you guys have read more than one personal development book? Yep. All of you. And how many of you guys feel like you're kind of stuck? Right? You need a guide. It is the fastest way to actually apply and get the ROI on all this work you've been doing the entire time. So if that is you, I encourage you to reach out to me. I love integration is my favorite thing. I could be speaking on stages, just giving keynotes all day long. I get asked to do it a lot and I do do it, but it isn't where I have the most fun because I can't see transformation happen when I'm speaking in front of thousands and thousands of people. It's co and I can bring a new awareness to certain things. However, the real great work for me comes when I am in the trenches. Helping you integrate and actually helping you get an ROI on all this work that you've been doing. And actually having you feel good knowing that when life happens, because it's gonna. We just experience Kobe Bryant and the loss of him. None of us are immune to life happening and life being taken. Just tomorrow.
I want you to be able to know that when life happens, you can handle it and the wheels don't have to fly off the axle of your business, of your personal life, of your family life, of your health life, of your financial life. None of it has to completely come derailed. But you're going to need a guide to help you through that and show you the way. There's lots of great ones out there. But if I at all resonate with you and you can relate to me at all, I think by now, if you're listening to me, you know that I walk my talk and there is nothing that I have heard that shocks me anymore. I have heard it all. You know, with close to eight years under my belt.
Of recovery, I've seen and heard it all. I've done quite a bit.
And close to 50 years underneath my belt, you know, I've got quite the resume of shit shows under my belt. And so I want you to know that I certainly can help you and it is time for you to get that ROI on all this work and all this time you've been spending on your personal development. So reach out to me. I would love to help you if this is helping you. You have a friend out there that needs this message. Screenshot this right now. If you're driving, you can post it later. Tag me. I want to hear how this episode is helping you. Where in personal development, you seem to be the most hung up where you think that you need a shift more than anything and I would love to help you.
