Welcome back and we are talking all about the enneagram3 today. Also known as the achiever or the Performer. This type falls in the heart triad, which is kind of surprising to some. And if you've been following along, we are talking about learning, leading, loving and even laughing with each Enneagram type. And today we fall on the achiever. And probably most of you listening. There's a huge chunk of you that listen to this podcast that probably are the type 3 on the Enneagram because we see a lot of them in entrepreneurship, in the online space, in network marketing, you know, performers, the achievers believe at their core that they must accomplish and succeed to be loved. Like that is the driving force. And you guys have heard me talk about this before.
That a lot of times I can appear very three like. And I actually just got off a call with my therapist and we were talking about this that when she first met me, she kind of thought I was a three because I am a high achiever. However, my driving force is not rooted in what a threes is. That belief that you must accomplish and succeed to be loved is the driving force for the achiever. And usually what I have noticed in doing a lot of coaching with the type 3 is they usually grew up in a home where a lot of the attention, affection, love, approval, worthiness came from the things that they did. And you know, a lot of parents do this innocently.
Sometimes because they didn't get that we can kind of swing the other way and do that. The type 3 is called the achiever or the performer. And like I said, your need is to find your worth and your value and productivity. So in these times right now we're seeing a lot of threes kind of go hyperactive into productivity, especially if they aren't in the healthiest spot. Now remember, we talk about wide ranges of health. I think there's nine different stages of health in each type. And this falling in the heart triad.
Their core motive has some level of significance. So the 2, 3 and 4 are driven by significance of some sort. And for each of those three types, it looks very different. And also how it's expressed is very different. Like the two is very.
External. The three kind of shuts down that the feelings and then the four internalizes it. But the under the undercurrent emotion for the two, three and four is shame. And in the twos and fours it is more apparent. In the threes it's very hidden because they do kind of shut down the emotional aspect. Even though they're very emotional beings, very rarely will you ever see that on the outside of them. When they go under stress is kind of where they will turn into like a hermit, a nomad, very isolated. Because a three under stress takes on the average to unhealthy parts of the nine. And a lot of times that means like shutting down. The main focus of attention for a 3 is tasks. They're very task oriented, very goals and recognition oriented. This is how I definitely knew for sure before I knew much about the Enneagram that I wasn't a three, because I actually don't enjoy recognition or anything like that. I don't like to be in the spotlight. But that deep rooted need to feel worthy in their productivity is something that drives them. And the way that they measure that a lot of times is through recognition.
Attention. And the threes are high achievers. You strive for success in whatever way most resonates with your upbringing. You know, if it was sports then you do that. If it was appearance and your, your, your looks, it was that. If it was academic achievement, it was that. If it was financial status, it was that. Like I said, as a member of the heart triad, you can sense the emotional energy of a room and adapt to fit what you believe is expected of you. So you can take on the chameleon role. It's a little bit different than the nine that the peacemaker can take on. That type takes on a chameleon role in a different way. The three can figure out what they need in order to feel worthy and they can adapt to it. That's why they're also called the performer. And I have a lot of three friends and they don't like when they're kind of labeled the performer. And I'm like, I promise you it was a Thing that kept you safe as a kid, it allowed you to feel your worth as a child. So don't take it so personal. It's not a bad thing. But like I said, that chameleon like quality allows you to connect easily with others. And.
The problem is because you can connect so easily with others and conform to whatever situation calls for, sometimes you'll wake up one day and not sure exactly who you are, so you can have an identity crisis. It's why sometimes a 3 will move the finish line all the time. Because they just don't get fulfillment from it. Sometimes because they don't even know why they're doing it. Because when we are seeking something outside of ourselves for our value and our worth, it's going to feel like, you know, you're filling in an empty bucket all the time.
A lot of times this is where you know, because they're such feeling beings and they shut it down. This is why they stay so busy. They're the workaholics typically on the Enneagram. They stay busy to avoid the feelings because their feelings can get in the way of their success. Right? So the life lesson that, you know, if you're a three, or you love a three, or you lead a three.
You want to really encourage them that they are worthy because of who they are, not because of what they do. And I've mentioned this on previous podcasts like Threes and Me before I got healthier.
I would like to go toe to toe with them because I could see through when I was kind of an asshole, to be honest with you. I would almost withhold recognition. I would withhold compliments, knowing that that's what drove them. Even though they would act like it wasn't like they were just being, you know, achieving because they're, they're good at it. But I could see through it as an eight, and I was an asshole a lot of times. And with would withhold that. Now, as somebody who is super healthy and obviously works with so many threes pouring into them in a way that allows them to know that I see them for who they are and that they're amazing because of who they are. The speaking style of a three, they're super enthusiastic. They're very direct and topic focused, super fast paced and confident. Sometimes they can be perceived as impatient or overly efficient, sometimes even fake and sometimes restrictive.
They identify. Threes identify with accomplishment and success.
How they're perceived, not just their physical image, but like their status image drives their need to work hard and look good. Threes usually Seek approval and acceptance based on performance. That's why they're so recognition driven and like to keep score. And they win at winning. I joke about that all the time. Like, they will one up you. They're super highly competitive. They love winning, like I said. But they have this constant pressure to perform, not just on the people that they serve, but it's internal too. How you relate to three is you let them know that you care for them regardless of their accomplishments. Like I said, now that I'm a healthy eight, I can see, right, I can spot a three a mile away and they know it. And if they're healthy, they embrace it and almost feel like I'm giving them a big hug even with a look. And threes that aren't so healthy run like hell for me because they know that I see it right. So when you're relating to threes, really let them know that you care regardless of what they do for you, how they lead you. I see this a lot in network marketing when.
When you're working with a three, if you're being led by a three, you know, so often because they're such high achievers, they get picked at a lot. Like, I want to pick your brain. I want to pick your brain. And they'll constantly do it because their ego really likes it.
But when you kind of turn the other way or don't take their advice or don't follow their lead, they feel abandoned and almost like you're dead to them sometimes. My uncle was a three who I just recorded a podcast on not too long ago, and they take their image and success and status very seriously. And if you get in the way of that or don't take their advice, if they're not healthy, they can just cut you off.
If you love or lead a three, encouraging them to pay attention to their feelings, which they don't like to do. Even though they are so centered in their heart and their feelings, they don't like to do it because it can slow them down. And if their worth is being dictated in their mind based on what they do.
Slowing down to feel feelings does not serve them in their minds. When you have a three that has evolved and allows themselves the time and the space and the grace to feel their stuff, that's actually where they will find fulfillment and where they will start to really understand that this whole thing that they've been working so hard at to prove that they're worthy, they don't have to do that.
Show them and tell them what's really important to you they don't. They can't read minds as well as like a 2 does. Twos can kind of read minds in that feeling way where threes, they don't take the time to. So you kind of have to show them and tell them what's important to you. They may push back and they may come across insensitive if they're not the healthiest, but it's really important that you do. Words of affirmation and appreciation go a very long way with a three because they are, like I said, the can I pick your brain? They're those people that get that a lot.
Join them and being active when you kind of join their cause, their vision and earn recognition. They do love to celebrate other people, especially like if it helps their cause. And I'm not saying that they won't if it doesn't. But.
It means a lot to them, your success when they're healthy. Seriously, they take. When I watch healthier threes celebrate others, it's a beautiful thing. It's a beautiful thing because I know that they really mean it. They really, really mean it. And they do take it so personal. And they do want your success as much as they want their owns. Threes channel their emotional energy into getting things done. Like I said, that's where they can fall very easily into workaholism or exercise addiction, things like that.
They take the initiative to work hard to accomplish their goals.
Where they get into challenge, you know, sometimes they can be so image driven, overworked, impatient, competitive, out of touch with feelings. Their strengths are super enthusiastic, action, problem solving, successful, efficient. They are the ones that can lead teams very far.
When they are healthy. I mean, they can lead teams far even if they're not. But to go the distance and have it sustainable is really where it's at. The defense mechanism of a 3 is identification, which means they take on a role so completely that they can lose contact with who they are inside. The threes can use identification to avoid failure and maintain a self image of being successful. That pressure, though, to keep up that winning image prevents access to personal feelings and needs and blocks the achiever from feeling appreciated and loved for who they are. It's why it can be very lonely sometimes as a three.
You know, if you are leading a three.
The leadership style of the three, if you are leading or you are a three, you are the compulsively productive professional and you are the master of getting to the goal and looking good, doing it. You guys love it.
If you work with A3, the typical type 3 behaviors in entrepreneurship or the workplace.
Like putting them in a weekly meeting, they're the first person to work, look at the watch like they got shit to do, right?
There are a lot of times the first person to get to somewhere and the last person to leave.
Giving them goals. If you are leading a three or you're working with a three, giving them goals or incentives that show on the outside, like giving me as an 8, an incentive that has recognition or even like, I don't care about that. I'm not driven by that. But if you have a three, know that they are driven by that. So prizes.
Recognition, titles, they don't. They do. They do care about money, but not as much as they want the accolades and the approval.
So it's really, really important knowing if you're leading a three, that that is what they're driven by. And that's why understanding the enneagram is so important. Because if you just have the same kind of incentive for everyone and you have a team that's not threes and you think, say, yay, you're going to get this or you're going to have this title. If you have a team of eights, they won't care. They really, really, really won't care.
One of the things that I also know, I lead a lot of threes and.
Giving them homework, I give them a lot of homework that involves feelings and they get frustrated with me at first. They end up thanking me for it.
Because at the end of the day they. I mean, think about it. If everything that A3 does is based on performing, they suffer adrenal fatigue a lot.
Their body shuts down, they actually might hurt themselves quite a bit trying to go, go, go, go. Push it through, power through. Suck it up. We got shit to do. I've seen that a lot of bodies breaking down because that push is so hard. So if you love or lead a three, you know, appreciating them for the little things, even though they want the recognition, even for the big things, you're going to help them really know that they are worthy because they're just who they are and not for what they do. My son, who is a 2, but he growing up his 3 wing was pretty strong. And this will help a lot of parents too. His connection with his dad was always sports. And so even though he's super sensitive to that helper, when it came to connecting with his dad and sports, my son kicked into his three wing hardcore and was like always the best on whatever team. He was the captain, he was the Teacher's pet, the coach's pet. And that was how he felt like he could. That was the only way he believed early on in his life he could connect with his dad.
As sports in his life, at least on the competitive cycle kickback, you know, he stepped back into his core two and actually swung to his one wing. And he felt that disconnect with his dad. And so it was almost confirming in some ways, they've done some work together. So it's not that. But if you think about a three that believes in their whole heart that the only way they're going to have love and attention, approval and worthiness is if they achieve, you can imagine how exhausting that can be. So when you are leading a three, or if you are a three.
Allow yourself to let people see your feelings and not when you're emotionally charged. Because a three can have a bite to it. A three can definitely have a strong bite, especially if people are getting in the way or challenging them. They don't like it, they don't like it. But being sensitive to that and holding space for them, it's hard to do because they really move very fast. But if you can get them to slow down, especially if you love them or lead them, it's going to be really, really important. What we can learn from threes also is a work ethic like nobody's business. I know, I learn, I admire them. They frustrate me. I'm just being honest. They frustrate me because of their constant, constant, constant. And I want them to slow down so they know how appreciated they are. But I also admire the work ethic. You know, in fitness competitions, we see a lot of threes. In network marketing, we see a lot of threes. In entrepreneurship, we see a lot of threes. And before I really understood the enneagram, you know, we've been told so often to model somebody who has what we want, right? Take advice from only people that have what you want. And although that is really important, you also have to consider the source. And I can model some of the behaviors of A3, which, like I said, I have. But if my motive is different, it's going to be more challenging and it's going to be harder for me to naturally step into that performer achiever role than a three would. So threes make that shit look really easy. And when we try to model that behavior, we get frustrated or we think there's something wrong with us when we try to do that. But I want you to know that when your driving motivator Is your worthiness is tied to that. Of course it's going to become like second nature to them. For me as an eight, that isn't my motivator. So when I try to embody that, I mean, I can do it, but I have to give myself some grace because that's my motivator. Like my whole worth isn't tied into achieving. The reason I achieve is because I want to not be vulnerable and I don't want to have to rely on anybody. Two totally different motivations, right? If, if you put me in a survival situation, I will outwork anybody, right? You put an achiever in a goal driven situation, they will beat everyone. And so if you're not a three, what you can learn from them is a work ethic.
You can learn systems, you can learn.
Efficiency, enthusiasm. But give yourself some grace. If you're not a three, take what you need, leave the rest, right? When a three sets their mind on something, they show up fully every step of the way. And like I said, they will approach any scenario with optimism and excellence. And that's another thing we can learn from them. And if you love a three or you are a three in love or in a relationship, the same is true for their relationships. While they can get the reputation, while threes can get the reputation that they only care about getting ahead, honestly, they really do want to be seen, heard and understood at their core. They don't want to have to be on all the time. But for so many of them, this is just autopilot for them. And it isn't the case. They, they don't only care about getting ahead. They are loving and kind. Actually in relationships they work hard to build a heartfelt connection and because they like to win, they're deeply committed to their partner. They don't want to end up in a broken relationship. A it affects how people might perceive them. Like they don't want to look like a failure. But also they do really, really care about a relationship if they're committed to it. They're all in threes. The achievers are highly adaptable, which means that they can shapeshift their personality. And this is where they can get into trouble in relationships. They can kind of at the beginning of the relationship, like I said, kind of take on the chameleon to be the best possible fit for whatever they believe is expected.
So this can be a problem if they enter in a relationship like this because you and I both know that's not sustainable to go the distance.
But there is this tenderness and care and deep Loyalty that lies beneath that impressive exterior. They really want.
That connection. They're thoughtful and intentional in their romantic partnerships and they appreciate a supportive and encouraging partner. Like I said, when a 3 is unhealthy, they'll avoid failure at all cost. And that will be true of their relationships. Like I said, they don't want to be in a failed relationship. So they'll almost put on the front, like nothing to see here. Everything's great a lot of times. And I'm not judging all of them, obviously not judging anybody, honestly. But you know those couples, the Pinterest worthy Instagram, beautiful couples that you see all the time who appear like they have no problems sometimes. This is what's going on. They would rather avoid the shame and embarrassment of a relationship breaking down.
And kind of just keep that image right. And they'll stay in something unhealthy to avoid being seen as a failure if they're super unhealthy. When the three achiever is of average health.
They can be highly image conscious.
They can share their achievements with their partner solely for recognition, almost kind of taking on that parent role like the child parent role.
Threes can also be people pleasers.
In their relationships when they're of average health.
Because most of their lives they have lived trying to meet what they believe others expect of them. And so they want their partner to be happy with them too, so they might adapt who they are to what their partner desires. This is where threes and nines can look a lot alike. And this is, like I said at the beginning, the three under stress takes on the average unhealthy nine. So this is kind of where this comes into play too. Threes are committed to having the best relationship they can. So that's the good news.
And even if it requires that they do some things that are uncomfortable or vulnerable, like opening up about their feelings. Because the healthy threes know and accept themselves as they are and they want to be a better version of themselves. Not for the sake of winning or achieving or looking really good on Instagram, but for their own mental health and self development. And those healthy threes deeply value relationships. And while they obviously still like to get shit done.
You know where an unhealthy three can put can get into trouble in relationships, friendships, you know, loving relationships, even parenting is when the goal is they've got the tunnel vision. Their relationships and even the ones that mean the most to them can kind of get pushed to the wayside if they're so fixated that I have to hit this goal to Be worthy. But the healthy threes.
They won't let work or other things overrun their real need for that human connection. When I see a three truly connecting, it makes my heart so happy, because I know that some of that shame and that pain and that emptiness and that loneliness that a 3 can kind of sit in.
Is moving to the wayside. Because threes do value the humanity in themselves and their partner. They don't want to see everything as a project. And when a 3 is healthy, they value humans just for being human.
Where communication and conflict can happen. In loving, leading, learning from a three. Like I said, threes want deep, emotionally fulfilling relationships. But sharing that can be hard for them. Vulnerability.
When they allow themselves to be vulnerable, it can feel like an opportunity to let people see failure, right? For, like, an eight, being vulnerable, like, can put people in harm's way. But for A3, that vulnerability gives people an opportunity to see them fail. And that can be, like, just too much for an achiever. So it's important for threes to have this space with their partner, their leader, their business partners, their friends, to share and talk about life without feeling the pressure to open up. A lot of times they'll sit back and really observe, Sometimes to really take it in and feel it, and sometimes to figure out what they need to be in order to win. Right? A lot of times with a three, if their partner goes first, that three can often be more emotionally vulnerable. So, like, when I'm working and leading a 3, because I'm not in a relationship with the 3, but when I'm working and I work with a lot, I will always share my vulnerability first. For this reason and because for a three to work with me, I know they've already kind of vetted me in their head. Like, you know, because threes will a lot of time only hang with those that, you know, they think have a certain status. It's hard to win the respect of a three sometimes. And so I know if one is working with me, they vetted me and. And they respect me. So when I allow myself to be vulnerable first, I can crack a three very, very easily. And I mean that in the most loving and respectful way I want them to feel because they've spent a lifetime not feeling. So if you are loving or leading a three.
Know that you like Letting them see that part of you, especially if you have a strong personality, will be really, really important.
One of the most challenging triggers for threes is criticism. This is where they can appear like ones. This is where ones and threes can Be mistyped like the ones the threes work hard to be the very best they can be and the average to healthy. Threes can feel comfortable to acknowledge and admit wrongdoing because they know deep down the feedback actually will help them improve. But. But if a 3 feels kind of blindsided or unjustly criticized, this is where like the dragon can come out on a three. And I've seen this a lot. If they don't feel like there is just in their criticism or you're kind of like challenging them or their character, this is where the bear comes out. But threes do prefer direct, kind and clear communication. So even though that three can look bulletproof a lot of times, you know, being gentle with them and kind, it'll make them easier to take that feedback.
When you are speaking to A3 and let's say they've hurt your feelings or you've let them down, even though they can appear like they don't give a shit, it's important to them that.
That they haven't let you down. They don't want to disappoint anybody because they see that as failure. Right? So reassuring your three that you love or lead, that they are loved and valued for who they are, even when conflict arise will be really, really important.
Even though like let's say you've poked the bear with a three, they really want to try to figure things out. Like I said, they might get frustrated, have an emotional response, and that can be an understatement for some, but they really want to do their best to remain calm and rat. They believe that competence and critical thinking will be the solution to the problem. But this can also make people that aren't threes feel like their approach is very clinical, sterile. They can come across as emotionally checked out because they just want to get to the bottom of things. So if you are a three, I want you to remember that not all the other types kind of operated as tactical, tactically as you and you, showing some of that human emotion side will really go a long way. And actually because threes like performance and getting things handled and done, if you can tap into that compassionate, empathetic, which is natural for you, in the heart triad, you have it in you.
You will get people to perform and you'll bring out the best in them, which is what I would know you want. The other thing with being a three is, you know, they are the type in the heart triad that their wings are also heart centered. As a three, you either have the two wing or the four wing, which are Both in the heart triad. So ironically, the three which can appear almost non feeling, they are the most feeling of all in the entire Enneagram because their wings are both in the heart triad as well.
So really remember when you're dealing with a three that can appear like they don't.
Care, know that they do at such a deep level, they've gone, They've spent a lifetime stuffing it. And the more that you can see, hear, understand them, appreciate them just for who they are, even if it's a conversation, not what they can do for you, that will be speaking their love language. And if you are a three, I'm going to encourage you to slow down and take a breath. Observe yourself and your feelings. Surround yourself with people that appreciate you for what, for who you are and really allow people to love you for that. A3, when they're in a growth pattern, they take on the healthy traits of the six, which is the loyalist. And that's where a lot of their systems, like when you've got a three that is very systematic.
They, in a good way, that is what they're taking on. I've got one of my closest friends. She's a three with a four wing. And originally, this is. This is great. She was originally typed as an 8. And I know her very, very well. And if she's listening, you know, this is so true. And she was like, she was fighting me all the way. And it was funny because I knew if I was going to tell her she wasn't an eight, that I was gonna have to have like my spreadsheet, all the proof, not be intense like an eight can be. And I knew she was a three with a four wing. She's very gifted artistically. She has a style that is unmatched. She has a work ethic that's unmatched. And you know, she has a lot of the eight behaviors, just like I have a lot of three behaviors, right? But I knew I wasn't a three. But when I was telling her, like, her motive is this. And this is why. And this is where you go in stress, and this is where you go in growth. And this is why I believe your wing is this. She's like, ah, this makes a lot more sense. So if you've been typed and for those of you out there that, you know, most people think there are three, a lot of people think there are three. You may not be, or you might be something else, but you may be a three or, you know, you've taken the test, but maybe it isn't resonating or. Or you've taken the test and you think you're pretty sure you know what your type is. I love doing sessions, enneagram sessions with people because it. It is a lot easier. You know, my first experience with the enneagram was with a trained therapist. And had I been left to my own devices to explore the enneagram and my eightness might not have gone well. I probably would have said, yeah, no, that's not for me. I'm probably more like, I wanted to be a three because, I mean, they get things done. And even though, like, I have a lot of those behaviors, like, it just, you know, work with me. It's a lot of fun. It will be very eye opening. The threes, I want you to take that pressure. You don't have to figure this all out by yourself. And if you need some guidance on how to maybe breathe a little bit easier or if you have a three in your life that you don't know how to talk to them, maybe in a way that can get them to slow down and know that they're loved and appreciated just because they're them. I would love to work with you. You can find me@traceyomally.com under the work with me section. You can hit me up on Instagram traceyomally.
But laughing with the three. My favorite memes are some of the threes because they win at winning.
They. They will do anything to stand out.
If you watched Friends, I think Monica was probably a one. But she has a lot of three. A lot of three in her too. Think Monica from Friends. Even though I think she's definitely a one, she definitely has like that. I'm going to crush everything.
When I see threes show up. Oh, what was the movie with the girl lawyer, Reese Witherspoon? I can't remember her name. Is it Reese Witherspoon where she's a little lawyer? You know, just showing up dressed to the T's. You can tell a three in a room. They're beautiful people inside and out. But if you are loving a three, you're leading a three. You are a three.
Surround yourself with people that love you.
Surround yourself with people that love you just because you're you.
I know that a lot of times you have put yourself in situations because you believed that your worth was tied in what you could do for people. This is where twos and threes are a lot alike.
A lot of times we'll see a two with a strong three wing like my son was growing up. One of my other best friends, she's a two with a three wing. My other really good friend is a three with a four wing.
Because you. Your worth has been tied to you performing. When you get to that point where you've hit this level of growth and you realize that it's exhausting and that it feels a little soulless sometimes. And a lot of times you're going to have to take an inventory of who's around you and what you've surrounded yourself with. And I want you to have some compassion for yourself and know that you did what you needed to do. And now that you believe in your whole heart that all you have to do is be you, I'm going to encourage you to find really good friends and partners, whether it's in business or romance or friendships that will hold that space for you and allow you to be emotional and allow them to lead you. And one of my greatest strengths, I will say, is working with threes. I give them that space. So if you're three out there and you need some help with this or need some direction on how to tap into that vulnerable part of you, because I'm telling you right now, you want success to be easy. Allow people to see your heart, Allow them to see your heart, it actually will speed up everything you've always desired. It won't slow you down. And if you're a three, I know how scary that can be for you. But this is where this gets really easy for you. Because you're naturally heart centered. You naturally get things done. And if you can naturally tap into that vulnerability, you will earn credibility, trust, and respect from those. And you, out of anybody on the entire Enneagram, have the ability to bring out the best in people with your work ethic, efficiency, your drive. And you are who people admire, not only because of what you can do, but because of who you are. So that is the type 3, the achiever, the performer. And again, if you love or lead or care about or you are learning from a three, buckle up, because they can be one hell of a ride for sure. And for you threes out there, thank you for leading the way and showing us how to get things done. Yeah. Awesome. The next one we're going to be talking about will be the four on the next episode, the individualists. That will be fun. And for the threes, sometimes the four wing comes into play. So all my threes will want to listen to the episodes about the two and the four. So you can kind of figure out what your wing is, because there's no tests to discover your wings and your wings can change. But yeah, it's very exciting. So if you love lead, you want to learn from a three, let's laugh along with the threes. This is the episode that is for you and if you know a three, share it with them. If you are a three, I would love to hear what you learned from this episode. Screenshot this Tag me on Instagram. Would love to know what landed on your heart.
