EP222: The THREE Subtypes of the Enneagram ONE: Making Sense of the Reformer/Perfectionist
24 Feb 2022 · 16 min
Podcast episode (EP222) by Tracy O'Malley explaining the three instinctual subtypes of Enneagram Type One (the Reformer/Perfectionist). Tracy defines the self-preservation One (keyword: worry) as the anxious, detail-focused perfectionist; the one-on-one/sexual One as the more outwardly angry, reformer-style subtype who focuses on correcting others; and the social One (keyword: non adaptable) as the teacher/role-model focused on the group and the greater good. The episode also emphasizes how subtypes clarify mistyping, previews a series on all types' subtypes, and includes a coaching call-to-action (Kickstart sessions and booking links).

Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Leadership Formula. And if you have not listened to last week's podcast on subtypes and the general understanding of what the subtypes are, I'm going to encourage you right now to go listen to that. Mainly because if you are an Enneagram fan, somebody who loves this tool, the subtypes are probably one of the most important things to understand. And if you have friends or people that you know that are into the Enneagram or even other Enneagram teachers, I am learning very, very quickly. There are a lot of Enneagram experts out there that if you ask them about subtypes, they have no idea the subtypes are next level. And I've talked about the Enneagram being a roadmap to the soul. The subtypes are a detailed secret door to that destination for your soul. I love talking about the subtypes. So as a recap on the subtypes, we have our core main personality type, right? That's the one that the memes are written about, the stereotypes and all of that. However, there are these three instincts that we all naturally have, right? The three instincts refer to our biological survival drives, those of self preservation, relating to others in social groups and sexual relationships, or one on one bonding and other types of like fusion experiences. There are three main instincts, nine types and 27 subtypes. So if you are doing the math, with the nine main types, with these three main instincts within each type, that creates a subtype. So there's actually 27 different kind of personalities, right? There's 27 of them more specific, they're more nuanced versions of the main type with distinct traits and patterns that you get when you multiply the three times. The nine right subtypes have also been called instinctual variants by some teachers leaders, leading to some confusion. So when I'm calling It a subtype that is the actual like type with their instinct connected to it. All right, I might have confused you, but that is not my intention. But this is really, really, really important. The reason that this is so important is because, you know, these subtypes show that each version of the nine personality types reflect a complex mixture of the combination of the dominant instinct. Right. And our secondary instincts as well. We use all three, but one usually dominates. They also define the differences between people that share a type more effectively than which wing you have. A lot of times people are like, well, I'm different because I'm an 8 Wing 7 and they're an 8 Wing 9. Yes, that adds just a little flavor.
To your main type.
But the real secret sauce in understanding you and others personally and professionally is understanding the subtypes. This is why 65 to 70% of you are also mistyped. It is the subtypes. So I'm going to take you next level because you all are craving it and I am so passionate about you understanding all the differences between each subtype. So each, each episode over the next nine, I'm going to be breaking down each Enneagram type within their subtypes. So this week is the Enneagram one, the Reformer, and we're going to learn about the self preservation one, the one on one one and the social one. Right? So the self preservation one focuses on making everything they do more perfect. Right. The one is kind of nicknamed the perfectionist or the sheriff. Right. The self preservation, like I said last week, kind of is focused on safety and security. Right? Well, being material security and comfort, anxiety and stress can combine with that instinct to drive you to conserve or hoard energy resources in response to demands from the environment or other people. So if you think about the Enneagram one, who is already pretty black and white thinking the self preservation one is the true perfectionist. Right? Like even more than the other ones, they see themselves as highly flawed. They try to improve themselves and make every detail of what they are doing. Right. These people are the most anxious and worried of all the ones, but also the most friendly and warm. Right. They want things under control and they try to anticipate risks and problems. Self preservation ones have a strong inner critic even more than the other two subtypes, and are really hard on themselves with a heightened sense of responsibility. The self preservation one are often anxious and like to be prepared down to the smallest detail. This subtype avoids expressing anger, but can feel deeply frustrated when disrupted. Yes, it is tough to be a self preservation one. But also, you set the highest of standards, you are in the highest of integrity. This is pretty amazing. Within each Enneagram type, within the subtypes, there is one that's called the counter type, which is one that doesn't present as typical as the stereotypes and the classic description of the type. So within each Enneagram type, there's three subtypes. And one of those three subtypes, like I said, is called the counter type. The subtype key word for the self preservation is worry. Right? For the self preservation one. For the one on ones. The one on one ones focus on making other people and society as a whole more perfect. More reformers than perfectionists, they tend to display more anger and zeal than the other type ones. These one on one ones focus less attention on perfecting their own behavior and pay more attention to whether or not others are doing things right. So this counter type 1 stands out from the other ones because of their intensity and impact on others. They have an idealistic view of how things should be and feel entitled to reform people or society to their way of seeing or doing things. The one on one ones may express anger and frustration directly when these efforts to improve others are resisted. So if you think about like the one on one, they're in the body center of intelligence. So they're driven by truth, justice, independence, autonomy. Their underlying feeling and emotion is anger. And although ones can appear very critical, they button it up pretty well, right? Because if they're either good or bad, if they're explosive, they kind of think they're bad. So the other two kind of ones, the self preservation and social, are kind of more internalized with that anger. This is where the one on one is the counter type. They are more outgoing with their anger. All right, and finally, within the Enneagram ones, we have the social ones. The social ones focus energy on working towards shared purposes of the greatest good of like a group, the subtype keyword is non adaptable. All right, so the social ones focus on doing things perfectly in a larger sense, knowing the right way to do things and modeling how to do things right for others. An intellectual type, these ones have a teacher mentality. They see their role as helping others see what they they already know how to be perfect. Right? I say the Enneagram ones, when they really are at their healthiest, are the greatest teachers because they have high standards. They're very attention to detail. Integrity is of the most importance to them. So you can see where the social ones really can embody that. Right, because they're focused on what's best for the greatest good. So social ones also bring attention to what's good. Right. And appropriate and set an example of integrity and principled conduct. High self control and high standards. Set them apart from people around them, motivated by fairness and making things right. At their best, they are systemic thinkers and role models for living one's beliefs and values. Right? So the Enneagram one I love very much. It is honestly the one I have probably the most challenges with too, because when they're not at their healthiest, they can be very rigid, you know, but when they're on point, that being said, Enneagram eights can be very challenging too, when they're not healthy. But, you know, the Enneagram ones value principles and integrity and are driven by the motivational need to be good and right. So you can see where, like, if they're not in the healthiest place where that can really jack with them a little bit, and then the rest of us, but really, really, really important. And like I said, you know, these subtypes that aren't reflected on all those online assessments that you're taking out there, they are the number one reason why you're mistyped. You know, these instincts are basically where nature and nurture collide, right? I say this often, like the Enneagram is a combination of nature and nurture with these childhood coping mechanisms that can change how we express our core type. Right? We're born with a temperament and disposition and a calling from the divine. And then we're dropped into environments and families and situations and school systems and all sorts of experiences. And that's where our instincts really kick in. Right? And then if you meld the two together, that's where you get your Enneagram type. And the expression of it and to understand it fully is within these subtypes. This is why I'm so passionate about my typing sessions and what I am doing with you. Because I do go into the subtypes. I help you determine that and make sense of why you're probably mistyped. Right? I see a lot of people, you know, because I've been studying and doing this for 10 years. You know, people that I've known pretty well kind of scream loud and proud what their type is. And I know that's not their type. I do. And I get it. I get it. A lot of times, whatever you show up as in a report or an online assessment, a lot of that has to do with the behaviors you express to the world. The Enneagram is all about the Motive. And when you can understand the instinctual parts of you and the subtype of your Enneagram type, this will help you make a lot more sense with why things go the way they go. This will help you get unstuck a lot, lot faster. Me understanding my instinctual response to life makes perfect sense why I'm super passionate about certain things and not so passionate about others the same way. But these Enneagram kickstart sessions that I do with you, we go in like we don't just properly type you, we also are very clear about your subtype and what that actually means. And I am coming off a corporate workshop that I did. And I didn't just break everybody down by enneagram type, I grouped them by subtype as well. And that was probably the most eye opening thing for the group is understanding that, oh, these self preservation people, that makes a lot of sense not just based on their personality, but that instinct. And so I am opening up my calendar again. It's been wait listed for quite some time and there's been a backlog and I have some openings coming up and I would love to do any grand kickstart sessions with you. If you are somebody who you know has taken an online assessment and you've been kind of sitting with it, but you've been listening to maybe me a little bit more and you're like, or you've talked to somebody that has done some work with me and you recognize that they're understanding and integrating this in their life and you're seeing the shift in them. I promise you it's probably one of the most powerful 90 minutes of your life. And pretty soon I'm bringing something pretty special to you too. Get typed properly so you can use this roadmap the most beautiful, elegant way possible. This has saved my ass on many different occasions. And next week I will be bringing you the Enneagram two subtypes and all of the different ins and outs of them.
You guys, this is such a beautiful tool. It really, really, really can help you be gentle with yourself and have compassion for yourself so that when you do catch yourself a little stuck from time to time. Because after all, we are human. This will allow you to see the way out with kindness and gentleness. And when you're able to do that for yourself, you will see how easily it is to do for other people. Right? If you're not giving yourself compassion, I hate to break it to you, but you're not giving it to other people either. It's just masked up. But there's something really beautiful about watching somebody give themselves some compassion and then freely give it to other people. So stay tuned for the following episodes on all the subtypes within each type. It will probably blow your mind how different they are and how maybe you have lumped in all the twos and all the threes into one big category, but they can all look very, very different from each other. And I look forward week after week to helping you become the ultimate leader in your life. All my Enneagram ones out there. I would love to hear what you think about this episode and which subtype you fall into on the Enneagram. And for those of you that love or lead A1, I hope this helps make a lot more sense of maybe why they operate with the way they operate and how you can better support them, encourage them and love them right where they're at. Like I said, you can go to Tracy O' Malley.com the work with me section to book your Kickstart session now. It'll be the most powerful 90 minutes of your life.
