EP249: The FIVE V's of Each Enneagram Type-Take Note- Your Streamlined Understanding of Yourself and Those You Love and Lead
31 May 2022 · 1 min
A Leadership Formula podcast episode (EP249) by Tracy O'Malley that teaches a compact framework — the "Five V's" (view, vulnerability, vice, value, virtue) — applied to each Enneagram type (1–9). The host defines the Five V's, then summarizes for every type: what they present to the world, their core fear/vulnerability, their defensive vice, their motivating value, their growth virtue, and their growth number. The episode also promotes 90-minute paid "Enneagram Kickstart" sessions and emphasizes using the Enneagram for leadership, relationships, and personal growth.

Let's do this thing.
Hey. Hey. Welcome back to another episode of the Leadership Formula podcast. And today is going to be a really good one for you to take notes. Even if you're driving, you're going to want to refer back to this one because this is kind of like the crib notes and the very quick, like aha moments on each Enneagram type. And I'm going to talk about the 5 VS V, as in Victor of each Enneagram type. And what the 5Vs are is view what we see in front of each Enneagram type. The vulnerability, which is kind of rooted in each Enneagram type sphere. It's the thing we're most afraid of, the vice, which is the dysfunctional way that we guard that vulnerability. It's kind of our weak spot value that's rooted in the motives and the virtue. This is like us and our highest self. This is us and our growth number, embodying our wings and our core type. And all five of the Enneagram types that are connected in our own internal framework, how they come together to have us at our very highest self, the highest moral excellence. And why is this important? Well, I know that you all listening, are either learning about the Enneagram, you drink the Kool Aid, you love it, you understand how beautiful and powerful this tool is in communication, culture, relationship, intimacy, connection, leadership, empowerment. All of this. And I've said this before, and I'll say it again, next to my faith, the Enneagram is the most powerful, effective, powerful tool that I have in my life. And when we really look not just at ourselves, but everyone else through a different kind of lens, a lens that is kind of focused on why we do what we do, not what we do, not only will we find we have more compassion for ourself, we then can pay that forward to everyone else that we love that we lead. And it creates this common language. It's why it's so great. It gives you framework. If we're just trying to figure everybody out individually like, and we are all individual, but there is this general framework that really helps you streamline and get to the root of things. And when we do that, and when we do that through the lens of compassion and love and empathy and grace and service, we create room in our lives for more flow, for more abundance. Not just financially, but emotionally, spiritually, physically, all of it. It is why I love the Enneagram so much. And if you aren't sure what your enneagram type is that know that you are not alone. It is the one hard part about the enneagram. But once you have the right information, what you can do with it is so powerful. And it's why I am so committed and will no matter how big this thing gets that I'm doing, I will always continue to work with individuals and do enneagram kickstart sessions, which is where we absolutely nail down your correct enneagram types so you have the right framework for you and then you can actually integrate this in your life. We will go through your wings and how and when to use them most effectively, your growth number, your stress number, and how this works in your life. Those Enneagram kickstart sessions, those 90 minutes are probably the most seen, heard, understood and valued you'll ever feel. It's what I hear from thousands of people that I have done this with. I've heard things like, wow, I've done 10 years of therapy and I got more in 90 minutes than I have in the 10 years of therapy. And I'm not knocking therapy at all. I do it. I still participate in therapy. I work with a lot of therapists as well to bring this into their practices. I understand the value in being able to streamline your transformation and your level of acceptance and grief of things that you've experienced in your life so that you can step into the greatest good and the calling on your life. If that is something you want to dive deeper into. Even if you think you know your enneagram type, I just will say this. All the online assessments are inaccurate about 65 to 70% of the time. So having a guide and a professional who's been doing this for 10 years, get to the matters fast and accurately for you makes all the difference. If you want to use this tool in your life, you can go to tracyomalley.com the work with me section and sign up for an Enneagram Kickstart session. Hit me up On Instagram at traceyomalley. If you have questions about that. Like I said, I do individuals, I do couples, I work with teams, I do families. I love using this framework so that we can really have a narrow, more narrow lens in how we see each other at our core, not at the things that we show the world. And that's what brings me into today's episode, talking about the five V's of each type, how we view the vulnerability, the vice, the value and the virtue. Okay, so Enneagram ones, also known as the reformer, the improver, the perfectionist. I like to call them the sheriff. How we view them is order, structure and control. That is what they show the world. That's usually the behaviors that we see. And again, a lot of times when we take these online assessments, the behaviors, behaviors are because we answer based on our behaviors, not necessarily our motives. And that's another reason why a lot of these online assessments are inaccurate. But ones absolutely are about order, structure and control. Now, their vulnerability is criticism. They're all about black and white thinking good, bad, right or wrong. So, you know, they want to avoid being criticized or being seen as wrong or bad. And so a lot of times when they feel like that vulnerability is being nicked, they have their vice, which is anger. And usually it manifests in the form of resentment. They're not explosive, let's say like a. An 8 can be. But their anger is this underlying resentful kind of brewing thing. Usually they turn that anger inward and self criticize. Their inner critic is very, very loud. But if they're pushed to the brink, they will project a little bit of that anger. What they value is goodness. And the value is rooted in what they're motivated. And the ones are motivated by being good and right and their virtue, when they can kind of not white knuckle it so much to not be so black and white thinking right. And that when they lean into their growth number of the enneagram 7, their virtue is serenity. They find peace in the present, in the moment, in not sweating the small stuff. It's beautiful when you can see a one do that. Now for the Enneagram Twos, the considerate helper. What we view and what we see and what they show the world, world. They're very pleasing, giving and supporting. It is their gift. It is their superpower and can also be their kryptonite, especially when some of these other things come into Play. So the Enneagram 2, they're motivated by a need for significance, their vulnerability, what their fear is Is being unloved. And so their vice, this is the dysfunctional way that they guard that vulnerability, is pride. They take pride in being super helpful. And that's where that giving to get and subconscious and sometimes conscious manipulation can come in for an Enneagram, too. What they value is love. They are the connectors, the relationship builders on the Enneagram. And it's beautiful when it is coming from the healthiest place. And that's why their virtue is humility. Knowing that, yes, I am here to be helpful and to serve and to be of support. But that humility comes knowing that, you know, it's not just your job, it's not just what you're here to do. And when they lean into their growth number of the Enneagram for the individualist and know that they have this internal significance that they need to seek out as much as they seek out external significance in what they do for other people. The Enneagram threes, the competitive achiever, how we view them, what we see, what the world, what they show the world is they are out to accomplish, to look good and to take action. My daughter and I were having a conversation the other day, and she's like, God dang it, I wish I was a three sometimes. We all wish we are a three. And all the threes that are listening right now, I know that's probably like music to your ears, but I want you to know we do understand your dark side as well. And it's, you know, when I learned more about the three, because that was probably the Enneagram type, I probably harshly judged the most because I could kind of see underneath and under the hood to the fear. Because their vulnerability is feeling and being worthless. That's why they strive to be the best and the vice to protect that feeling is deceit. They deceive themselves. It's why sometimes threes can get the bad rap of being fake or manipulative in order to get to the finish line faster. What they value more than anything and what motivates the three is significance, obviously, but effectiveness. See the goal hit the goal and their virtue when they step into their growth number, which is the Enneagram 6, where they become more thought out rather than, you know, finish line. When they stop looking at the finish line so much and they can focus on that soul line. Their virtue is hope. That there is hope in every part of the journey, not just the race to the finish line. It's really cool when we can see an Enneagram 3 lean into that. All right. The Enneagram 4, the individualist, the intense, creative. I like to call them the romantic as well. How we view them and what they show the world is that they are authentic, emotional, meaningful, right? They have significance as their driver, too, but it's more this internal significance and what am I here to be and do now? Their biggest vulnerability is being ordinary. It's a lot of times why they go into comparison. Itis. They aren't judgmental of other people, but they are super judgmental of themselves. They're on this constant quest to be their most authentic self. And when they kind of get outside of themselves and look at the world, that's where their comparison can happen. And so their vice is envy, right? It's where they. They're not jealous, but they are envious that everybody else seems to make it look a lot easier. But when a 4 can really lean into their value and their virt, that's when we see the beauty and the gifts of this creative come to life. And when, you know, the Fours are the most intuitive on the Enneagram as well, and when they can get envy out of their way, that's when they can tap into that intuition. Instead of just reacting to a world around them, they can go into that beautiful internal world of theirs where they value originality. But so often, you know, comparison can get the best of that originality. And when they step into their growth number, which is the enneagram, 1, equanimity is their virtue, like really knowing that they don't have to compare themselves to be their most authentic self. And the more that they can lean into their design and have a little structure in finding that instead of looking outside of themselves, that's when they can really, really bring the beauty and their gifts to this world. They're amazing, all right. The Enneagram Fives, you all know, it's my favorite Enneagram type, low key, the investigator, the quiet specialist, right? How we view them and what they show the world is that they think, they analyze, they solve, think, analyze and solve. They are black and white thinkers as far as information, right? Where the Enneagram ones are black and white thinkers as far as, like, good and right and wrong. The Fives are very black and white with how they analyze and solve things. Their biggest vulnerability is looking foolish. That's why, you know, their vice is avarice, which is hoarding energy and resources because they don't want to look foolish. They feel like they need to have as much information as possible to have the energetic resources and all of that so that they can be equipped and capable. They do not want to look unequipped, uncapable or foolish. They value and what motivates them is wisdom. They're driven by a need for certainty and that certainty to be equipped and capable. And when they can lean into their virtue, which is non attachment, it is their gift. It is their gift to not let emotions take over. And when they step into that growth number, which is the enneagram 8, which is why I think fives and eights really do understand each other probably in a different way than anybody else. When they can have that decisive kind of energy that an 8 brings to the table instead of, you know, gathering more information, information paralysis. And they aren't attached to like, I may not know everything, but I can really move forward when they can do that. That's why fives are so expert level with what they bring to the world. When they can kind of let go of maybe not having all the information. And that part of their wisdom comes in mistakes along the way or not knowing. Right. That's where joy in the journey can really come. For an Enneagram 5. All right. For the Enneagram 6, the loyal skeptic. How we view them and what they show the world is that they're cautious, preventative and aware. They're the master troubleshooters for a reason and master strategists and collaborators. Their biggest vulnerability is being unprepared. They do not want to be blindsided more than anything. And so where they're vice, this unhealthy kind of coping mechanism comes into play. Is this doubt, this doubt of like, I need more information, I have worst case scenario, kind of. They don't trust people. That's why they're called the loyal skeptic. Right? They value loyalty, but they're also quick to trust. The problem with them sometimes is once they feel like they have all the information, their blinders can come on and they can become somewhat naive, which kind of gets them blindsided, which then that whole cycle continues. But when they can really step into their virtue, which is faith, which is the Enneagram 9, that's their growth number. When they can lean into knowing that same thing with like the six, that sometimes the blind side is where the biggest growth can happen and the biggest gifts can happen. You know, the thing we didn't see coming, it isn't always a bad thing. But if you ask any six, that is like worst case scenario for them when they operate in that more unhealthy place. But when they can lean into like everything is happening for the greatest good of myself and others. And even if I don't have all the. The information, I can find joy in this journey. When a six can get out of their own way and lean into that virtue, then their real great collaborative gifts can come into play. Because if they don't, their ability to collaborate really can have some wear and tear on their relationships and the impact that they can make. All right, the Enneagram 7, the enthusiastic visionary, the enthusiast, how we view them, what they show the world is they're positive, they seek joy, they sometimes they have a little bit of monkey brain. There are no stupid ideas for an enneagram 7. Their biggest vulnerability and where their fear lies. And you know, they're motivated by a need for certainty. But they don't ever want to have limitations put on them. They don't want to be put in a box. They don't want to be without options, right? And so their vice can be gluttony. Like, more is better, more is better. Insatiable. And I don't mean with food, but gluttonous. And the yeses to yes. That sounds like a great idea. Great idea. Great idea. They value joy and optimism and the anything's possible part of them. And so a lot of times they, because they value that so much, they don't really love when somebody is around them, bringing down their vibe or feeling their own hard feelings. That's where the monkey brain can come in, right? That's where they can become avoidant and that gluttonous kind of thing, you know, to avoid the pain. It isn't just because they want more excitement and more adventure. They also want to avoid pain that might limit them. So when an Enneagram 7 leans into their growth number, which is the Enneagram 5, which is where they find beautiful joy in solitude without all the shiny objects. You know, their virtue is sobriety, and I don't mean, you know, from a substance, but not needing something outside of themselves to bring them peace and joy and excitement, right? And that's why that 5 growth number is so important for an enneagram 7, for all their beautiful dreams, ideas, adventures to take root, they need to have that environment and that solitude to make it happen. Otherwise, they're just kind of walking around life throwing all these seeds of dreams all over the place, and nothing can really plant itself fully. All right, for my Enneagram Eights, like myself, how you view us, what we show the world is that we are powerful, direct, decisive, and we take charge of situations and the Biggest vulnerability. A lot of times why we show that to the world is because our biggest vulnerability is being vulnerable. And I don't just mean with our emotions. That means being put in a vulnerable situation also where we might have to rely on somebody. Because the biggest fear for an enneagram 8 is being betrayed, violated, or being seen as weak. And so in order to avoid being vulnerable, the vice of the enneagram 8 is lust. This intensity, right? I've said this before. Enneagram Eights eat intensity for breakfast. We crave intensity. And so this need for that lustful. And I don't mean sexually, but like that intensity of an experience. And especially if you're like me and you're a one, I'm one eight. I mean, that's next level intensity. But that's also how we get to flex, right? It's how an enneagram 8 gets to flex. When things are intense, that's where we get to shine and show the world how strong we are. Because they value strength and capacity, right? There's a lot of times why an enneagram8 shows the world that they're powerful and direct and that they can take charge because they value strength. They're black and white thinking like the ones are black and white thinking good or right. And the threes are either great or not. The eights are either strong or weak. There's no gray area, right? So you can see where that intense feeling and that intensity allows them to operate in their minds, in even a dysfunctional belief of strength and the virtue for the Enneagram 8. And this is where the two, the Enneagram 2, which is the growth number of the eight, really allows them to step into the virtue which is innocence. Being vulnerable and being put in a vulnerable situation. You know, eights are wired that way. And a lot of eights have been put in situations very early in life where innocence was robbed. And I gotta say, like me at 50 years old, I am able to lean into the innocence and the virtue of my eightness. But not without the help of like my growth number, my wings and all the framework included. All right? And finally, the Enneagram Nines, the adaptive peacemaker. How we view them and what they show the world is that they are conflict avoidant. They are in for comfort, and they're very accommodating. And this also makes them very safe for all of us. Their biggest vulnerability, what they want to avoid more than anything is conflict. So a lot of times, in order to avoid that conflict, their vice is self forgetting. This is also where their selective hearing comes into play, right? They learned early on sometimes that this conflict avoidant part of them, this is where the self forgetting and not having their own thoughts, feelings, emotions or at least expressing them, they learn how to self forget them so that they don't have to express them, which can also bring up conflict. Right? They value peace and harmony and they will get it at all costs. But what they don't realize sometimes is this immediate need for peace. The short game desire for peace and harmony creates long term disharmony, right? And so when they can realize that and think a little bit more forward because they're very instinctual, they're in the instinctual triad. When they can forward think a little bit more and lean into their growth number, which is the enneagram 3. Their virtue is purposeful action. They can care deeply and be very inclusive of everybody. But their ability to challenge directly not just other people, but themselves is really where the beauty and the wisdom and the Yoda like qualities of the enneagram9 we get to see. And that's when they're at their very, very best because they can articulate even the hardest conflict in a way that's beautiful. When they can embody purposeful action and their own voice, it's. It's awesome. So that's them in a nutshell. If you were listening while you were driving or you didn't have a place to write things down, I encourage you to go back and listen to this. The five V's of each Enneagram type. Seriously, knowing these things are some of the greatest parts of being able to understand the people that you love and lead even better, including yourself. And like I said, the Enneagram is a powerful, powerful tool. But it all starts in having the proper information for yourself. And so I encourage you right now.
