It well over a decade ago.
Now that I have more than a decade of experience using the Enneagram and working on myself in my family with those closest to me, building my own bulletproof leadership, sales teams with one on one clients, couples, leading workshops for top Fortune 100 executives, and speaking to large audiences all across the globe about this powerful tool. This podcast will have powerful conversations with guests, live typing sessions, as well as solo episodes of breaking down dynamics of the Enneagram and how they impact your life, career and relationships. So now let's dive in.
Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Lead with the Enneagram podcast. And today, you know, we are a few days away from the holiday of love. And regardless of what you feel about it, I know that the topic I'm going to share and talk about today, although we make light of it, we romanticize it, we have maybe preconceived thoughts about what that should look like. It's a really serious, serious thing and impacts our most intimate relationships, our romantic partnerships. And today we're talking about sex, baby. And I want to preface this that I don't take lightly. Those of you and myself that have experienced sexual traumas in their life and a lot of times when we talk about sex, we'll kind of just gloss over it or we might even be triggered by it. And I really want you to stay in tune here, even if you have experienced some kind of that in your life, myself included. It has taken me a long time to not be in my unhealthy around it. And the Enneagram has actually really helped me be grounded in my truth, in that love, compassion, empathy, service, and grace that I talk about. But how our Enneagram type can affect our sex life. And if you are healing from some stuff around sex in your past, maybe take some of what I'm about to share with you, with you in your healing journey. I am not here to make light about sex. Honestly. It is one of the things I talk about a lot with the people that I work with, men and women, because it is. It is an indicator of something else going on in our life, maybe how we show up. And when we share ourselves so intimately with someone, it is very revealing. And I'll just be transparent with you. You know, I have been in my sexual energy, let's say actively, since I was about 16 years old. And what I was taught, told, and modeled sexuality early on in my life. And. And what I believed about it. And then taking my Enneagram type into perspective on how I saw the world, it absolutely showed up in my intimate life physically, and not always in the healthy way. You know, I talk a lot about our Enneagram type. And each type has their absolute superpowers. And that includes in the bedroom. And it's sexy time, right? It really, really does. And that same superpower, even in the bedroom, can become your kryptonite. Absolutely. When it's coming from a place of fear, insecurity, unworthiness, shame, guilt, or ego. And for most of my life, I would say, well, at least 25 years of that kind of part of my life, I was operating. Although a lot of people thought my superpowers were pretty damn great, I will say that. And I prided myself on that. I know the truth today that the come from, from that was obviously for me, fear, insecurity, unworthiness, shame, guilt and ego. And I gotta tell you, you know, dating now on a constant commitment and unconditional commitment to my healing journey, you know, because what we have is a daily reprieve that is contingent on that maintenance of our spiritual condition. And that includes in our sex lives. That I have to be very mindful of. Where I go, you know, in our most intimate relationships are where we build the muscles. We can't build these muscles without relationship. We can't. And that means friendships, partnerships, romantic partnerships. And knowing that this area of my life I have flexed in my. What most would seem as superpowers, this is where beautiful, compassionate, radical honesty with yourself has to come into play. And if you are struggling in this area. Whether you're in a committed relationship, an open relationship, you're dating, you're single. This is going to be an important conversation for you, for you, with you, right? Full transparency. When I started my healing journey, like really like daily committed. I've been on this healing journey for 23 years. But honestly, for the last 12, hardcore, every single day, you know, 100 in it all the time. And this was an area of my life I had to address. It was. And when I was going through that, I needed to take a sabbatical. Not just from sex, but also relationships. I needed to understand why I did what I did without shame. Right. Why I believed that I needed to do certain things to prove that I was Strong. As an enneagram 8. That's, that's our flex, right? And how to switch the come from. I'm still intense as an 8. I still am feisty and lustful and all the things like I am. But I needed to make sure that flexing was coming from, you know, that love, compassion, empathy, service and grace, especially when I would meet, you know, my partner, that I wanted to show all parts of me. And I took seven years off. I don't recommend that long necessarily. But you know, I've experienced a lot of sexual trauma in my life. A lot. And I'm a girl who has been listening to sex therapists since I was nine years old. You know, I'm going to age myself and many of you listening may not even understand who this person is, but Dr. Ruth Westheimer was the OG of sex therapy. And I remember as a nine year old, you know, because I, I was told some things about sexuality from my father, believe it or not, when he was leaning into me as a surrogate spouse, so to speak, talking about my own mom and his disappointment in how she showed up in that way. Yes, I know it's unreal to even think about that. And I loved that he shared that with me. And so I got really, really curious. And Dr. Ruth, the AM radio. Do you even know what AM radio is, people? Yes, I'm almost, almost 51 years old, but I remember hiding under the blankets and turning the volume way down low, but listening really, really close. I wanted to understand the psychology of sex, you know, but I had these beliefs that were ingrained in me on what a woman should be. This goes into play whether you're in, you know, a heterosexual relationship, same sex relationship, you know, multiple sex relationship, whatever this looks like for you, you know, because we are responsible for how we show up in our own bodies. And so this does not discriminate any kind of relationship that you might be in. But I really wanted to be good. I wanted to be really, really good at sex. I did. And it was my mission because that's how I had power. Right? My dad was an enneagram8 as well. My mom was not. And the way that he talked about it and other men talked about it back in the 80s, right? The friends that I had, I was a guy's girl. So, you know, everybody talked to me about it. And I was very open about talking about sex. I have been my whole life, mostly from an unhealthy enneagram 8 perspective. However, I also really wanted to help people in the bedroom. Believe it or not, my friends, they nicknamed me the Professor. The Professor. I've always been fascinated with the dynamic of intimacy and sex. If you are someone that maybe struggles with this area of your life, or you're in a rough patch, or it's just not happening for you, or it feels like a box to check, I want you to really get to the essence of who you are. Even if you've experienced traumatic things in your life, you might have been victimized, but you don't have to be a victim to it. You really, really don't. Doesn't mean you don't have work to do and healing around it. I certainly do and have and continue to, you know, because this is where a superpower can slip into the Kryptonite side of our Enneagram type. But knowing your core Enneagram type can really improve your sex life. You approach sex from, you know, your viewpoint based on your Enneagram type. And what where things go sideways is. We most of the time expect our partners to share our perspective and our views, too. And when they don't, it's natural for you to feel like we got to get things right. And you might need to conform your perspective to be the ideal lover, right? But there are nine basic ways to view sex. None of them is wrong or more right than any other way. Understanding this means you can accept not only your approach, but those with whom you share a life and a bed. Knowing how your Enneagram type influences your sex life, because each type has more integrated ways to be sexual, it's helpful to recognize these characteristics so that you can be the best lovers for yourself and for others. Right? It is. It is about giving and receiving and accepting. Accepting that that's where I struggled. So I'm going to kind of take you down. How each type Might show up in the bedroom in an integrated, which is like emotionally healthy way. And the signs to look for which indicate maybe a path of growth potential. So The Enneagram type 1, you know, the strict perfectionist sometimes in the bedroom called the sinning saint, that one is always looking how they can improve things. And this is a good thing. This is their superpower, right? High standards, high integrity, meticulous about what they. But you can see where if you're in Enneagram one in the bedroom, seeing how things need to be improved and rather than relaxing into simply being you, you might believe it's your mission to make the bedroom a better place. Now, this isn't a bad thing. This is. This can be really, really great. But it can be hard when other people might not share that same desire for perfectionism or it feels like enthusiasm is missing. If it's so like task oriented and per. And being really good, you kind of lose the spontaneity out of it, right? So letting go of the need to maybe judge yourself or your partner and becoming embracing and the growth number to the Enneagram one is the Enneagram seven. That enthusiast, right? It's really, really important to kind of always be in your superpower of wanting to improve and up leveling and having high standards and meticulous in what you do. And there's a flip side to that and having some fun with this too. There's no right or wrong way. Sex is an expression of your love, which shows up differently sometimes. And that's okay. It is not black and white, which the Enneagram one pretty much operates. The Enneagram two, the considerate helper in the bedroom. You might be known as the sexy seducer. The enneagram 2 is in love with love. They are the relationship connection people of the Enneagram. And if you're a two, your desire to be in a loving relationship is your greatest desire. But sometimes you might question whether you're worthy of being love. So the Enneagram in relation to sex shows how you solve the problem, right? Just seduce your intended with acts of kindness and love, making them the focus and yourself worthy of being loved. Sometimes the Enneagram too. They can be an over giver and that can mean in the bedroom too. Now you might be thinking, well, what's wrong with that? Well, if you. Sometimes the two has a hard time expressing what they need or even admitting that they do have needs, right? And when A2 forgets their own needs in the pursuit of being loved and appreciated, resentment will build Right. Relationships rely on receiving and depositing, just like your bank account, right? And when your partner maybe is ranking up all the receiving that is unsustainable and honestly, resentment will end up taking over. So for to learning to let go of the control that comes with giving and surrender to accepting love from a partner, sex becomes about self nurturing as well as nurturing a partner's needs. You know, the growth Number for the Enneagram 2 is the Enneagram for the individualist, the romantic. But you have to first admit that you have your own needs, use your words. And rather than pridefully believing you're above having them, when you can kind of lean into that healthy four, sex can truly be about passionate, giving and receiving with no hidden expectations. Now our enneagram3, the competitive achiever, otherwise known in the bedroom as awesomely orgasmic Threes are always striving to be the very, very best. And that does not limit in the bedroom they want to be admired and adored and they love to be acknowledged for their talents and unlimited potential. So for you, my enneagram3, this means that if you aren't at your highest emotional, healthy level, you as a three can see your sexual prowess as another way to gain accolades. As in like, wow, wasn't I great or check my body out or you know, all the things, right? Sex can become a performance rather than an intimate pleasure if you're not careful. As an enneagram3, it can also become another way to create stress. And you know, if you're not as good as you'd like to be, right? If you're not the best or you're worried that you aren't living up, you might make it about the end zone, the goal line rather than the soul line. So if you are a three, you know, becoming the healthiest part of who you are and being mindful of it, you're always going to excel and try to be your very best. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, right? But in an integrated three, this desire manifests as being both loving and loved. And when you accept yourself fully, not necessarily how you perform, so that you can accept others and your lover with the same authenticity, when you accept yourself, you let go of the need to see sex as another goal to be achieved, another notch in your fancy belt. When you're integrated and sex becomes other, directed and heart centered, which is a genuine exchange of love. Now for my Enneagram fours, they are the romantic on the Enneagram, the creative, the intense creative or the romantic. Romeo or Juliet in The bedroom as a self aware, passionate, moody 4. Love is your language. They have the greatest emotional capacity. On the Enneagram, you long for a lover who understands you and with whom you can be deeply and authentically intimate. The problem is for a 4 sometimes is that everyone else out there seems happy and enjoying fulfilling relationships. While there are many times you as A four, feel alone and misunderstood. This is where that the vice of the four comes into play. That envy. And as if true love is something that is elusive. If you do find the one, then you throw all you have into the relationship. Sometimes you start to question, is this genuine? Is the deep, intense, juicy relationship I thought was there gone? And I talk about force quitting before the miracles happen. Sometimes, like when they're in it, they're so in it. But the minute they take their eyes up and look and start comparing and thinking, something's missing in them, this is when we don't experience their gifts. And yes, this includes in the bedroom. Right? So an integrated for one that is healthy emotionally, how do they show up in relationships? The romantics of the world are deeply connected to themselves and their partner. And love is a mystery to be revealed and expressed and not rushed. Rather than disappear into a fantasy world of love to increase the buzz of interaction or maybe long for what might have been in the past, healthy, integrated force connect with their current reality. This person, this body, this sex, this buzz. And I will tell you this, I am in a romantic relationship with A4. And when they are on point with this, and coming from love, compassion, empathy, service and grace and not their own, it is magical. I will say that the Enneagram 5, the quiet specialist, the Investigator, or in the bedroom, the Lonely Lover. And all of these names and some of this information comes from a book called Sex and the Enneagram written by Ann Gad. Just so you know, it's probably one of the only ones about sex and Enneagram out there. But back to the enneagram 5. You, like most people, long for a connection with another. Yet with that desire comes the fear. Fear that a relationship will ask to sacrifice too much of your time or resources. This is why the Fives are the most introverted on the Enneagram. They hoard their energy and resources because their main goal is to be knowledgeable and prepared, right? And so you can imagine intimate relationships that can really impede that. So for A five, relationships then are desirable on one hand, yet can create an inner conflict. So what do you do if you're an enneagram 5? Right.
4 fives because they like to investigate sex is something to be studied, researched or observed and a headspace rather than the emotional, heart and body oriented space others seem to desire. So the most heady on the Enneagram Fives can be very tactical in information. They might know the technique, but without the emotion and love and feelings behind it, then it just becomes kind of manufactured, right? And when a five can have sex, it can feel like being a wound up spring let loose. Many type fives, the answer to relationships become to withdraw to a space where you feel safer and can more easily process your emotions. So sometimes long distance relationships work, but they like to have their space and or an independent partner. As a five, you're also open minded. So like fives can be very explorative in their sexuality. They are open to new techniques and all the things like because they are very tactical and information they do like to explore other ways and to see which works best. Or you might even convince yourself that being single is easier and less invasive and less hassle. And this is usually where a 5 can get into trouble because you are in it when you're in it, but when it's done, you want to kind of go your separate ways. And when we're talking about matters of the heart and the most intimate parts of our life, you got to be careful sometimes without communication, this can make your partner feel abandoned or like you're disconnected from them. So for an enneagram 5, when you're integrated and emotionally strong sex involves all three of the centers, not just your head, but the heart and your body. As it does for all healthy types, right? Sex is not a technique to be mastered with study, but a deep awareness of your being connected with another person. Emotionally sensory, uncensored sex where you can share your feelings with a trusted partner. Now for the enneagram 6, the loyal skeptic in the bedroom, sometimes known as the loyal lover. They're funny, engaging, committed, responsible, reliable and will support a partner in a venture. Yet despite these attributes, you as an enneagram6 can question at times if your partner really loves you. So that that skeptical part of you can really get in the way of intimacy, right? Self doubt can eat away at your self esteem and have you wondering who can really be trusted. And this questioning can make you seem fickle at times and for your partner, like feel like, well if you don't trust me, like this doesn't feel good, right? And a lot of times a six can kind of do the few steps forward, a few steps back, trying to Figure love out thinking rather than feeling your feelings. Sex can become another issue that potentially carries problems, you know, like little condom break. What about this? What about that? You know, all the things that when we're intimate with somebody that can go sideways or have unexpected things, right? The worst case scenario for an enneagram 6 is a blind side, right? Spontaneous enjoyment of sex can become burdened by all those concerns in a worst case scenario vision. Even though like, yes, it's really great that sixes think about like strategy and potential problems that might arise. But if it robs you from emotionally connected, connecting to that person and your partner, this is where intimacy can be fractured, right? And you can lose the enjoyment of the moment. So my integrated sixes, my healthy emotional sixes, realize how many of your fears are unfounded projections. A lot of times you use this as a way to stay safe behind your wall. But you can start to become your own inner authority, trusting a deep inner knowing. You know, your growth number is the enneagram9 and, and kind of surrendering to faith without seeing the steps in front of you, knowing that rather than turning to others for insider advice, you have this divine inner knowing as integrated sexual partners. Then you are fully present with what is happening in the bedroom. Rather than shifting into your head to consider all the potential negative possibilities for my enneagram7, the enthusiastic visionary. But in the bedroom, you might be known as the spontaneous suitor. And life is a banquet of pleasures to be savored and enjoyed. And you can imagine a seven were. Hell yeah. Let's go baby. I've been in a relationship with a few sevens. And there are beautiful parts about this, I will say. And there is, you know, the not so pretty part of, of your personality, right? And sexually it's a stimulating world of possibilities, right? Sounds like you're kind of thinking, right, my enneagram sevens. But with you at the party, with you, the party never ends. And as you seek new sexual highs to detract from the boredom of daily life, that doesn't necessarily mean to say that they are unfaithful. But same old sex to you is what like spam is to your inbox, right? It doesn't excite. In fact it can annoying. And this is where a 7 can get into trouble. If they don't communicate or they get into their feels, right? When a 7 doesn't feel the excitement, their tendency is to go to the next shiny object. So you can see where this can get you into trouble. The growth number for the enneagram seven is the Five which is, you know, that quiet specialist that you know turning into solitude. And, and you know when your tendency is to bolt or wondering what sex with that person might be like. You don't like your options or freedom being restricted. The trouble is, is planning all the next thing with your busy mind means you seldom enjoy the very thing that you have right in front of you, right? You, you have a hard time enjoying in the moment sometimes. So this is in contrast when integrated Sevens have a sober awareness of the joy to be found in the moment and not that insatiable part of you. You know, gluttony is the vice of the enneagram7 and sobriety is the virtue, right? And, and knowing that you have everything you want and need here in the moment, you not at some time in the future, you can truly appreciate the ecstasy of the sex you're having and bring a more balanced, sober view to life. Now the more you can communicate this with your partner, the more of a fun you might have, right? And staying in the moment instead of rushing or, or expecting it to be, you know, something new. Find, find your heart. Like, like all the Enneagram types, leaning into all three centers of intelligence are really important in this. It's the way that we become the most emotionally intelligent and the best critical thinkers and, and sexual beings. Quite honestly. Now, for my fellow Enneagram Eights, the Activ.
Otherwise in the bedroom known as the lusty lover. We Enneagram Eights are intense, big hearted, bold lovers who cut to the chase. And if you want someone, my Enneagram Eights, you go after them with passion and purpose. Yes and no. Because vulnerability I've never been, personally, I've never been one that enjoys sex with somebody that I'm not into. So you know, I, I have to feel something for someone in order for it to be enjoyable for me. Eights aren't necessarily afraid of rejection, although we don't enjoy losing love to someone else. In fact, I've had this happen in my life and although like, yeah, that hurt, I was more mad that it said something about my strength, right? The confidence and charisma of an enneagram 8 allow you to charm your way into the hearts of those you love. And because we enjoy a challenge in the sense of achievement when we land, so to speak, that's kind of what lights us up, right? Eights enjoy being in control in life, but can sometimes let this slip in the bedroom. And you know, back to the beginning of the story when I was sharing about that, I loved that and I believed that that's where I got a lot of my worth, was being strong. And not just the bedroom, but all areas of my life. And based on what I was taught, told, and modeled for me, I had a lot of evidence that that was true. Although that is a really good aspect of the eight in the bedroom, it can also turn sideways on you, right? You value your freedom, but don't always respect the other people's right to decide what that might look like, right? There's an intensity about an 8's lovemaking, and eights enjoy a partner who matches your intensity. So I will say, being with a four, this works very, very well. If they don't in time, it can be frustrating, right? What you might not understand if you're less integrated or not as healthy or emotionally intelligent at this point in your life is that this very confrontational boldness can drive a partner away. And that is evidence to be true in my life, too. The more that you push forward, the more that they retreat, especially if they're a different Enneagram type, right? So the most integrated, healthy, emotionally Enneagram eights understand this dynamic and realize that power is nothing without true love and that the truly strong are gentle. And I will say this for my fellow Enneagram Eights out there, this is the sweet spot in intimacy for an enneagram 8. I'm not saying it's easy to surrender into that because the biggest fear is being betrayed or violated. But also, our growth number is the Enneagram, too. That considerate, compassionate person. This is the beautiful part about intimacy when an 8 can surrender to that. Finally, the Enneagram 9, the Adaptive Peacemaker. In the bedroom, you might be known as the sensual sweetheart. And as a kind, nurturing nine, you're the most accommodating of all nine Enneagram types going along to get along. And you might need to be persuaded to change a little routine in the bedroom if it's working for you. But your natural desire to please your partner can make you more open to trying something that your partner wants to explore. This is really, really great, right? As long as you're doing it because it's what you want, rather than just to keep harmony, right? You enjoy maintaining the peace, and as a result, don't enjoy confrontation or conflict. So retreating to a happy space in your head can be preferable when you're not at your best and you're just keeping the harmony. You know, there's a big difference between keeping peace and making peace. But when you're not in the greatest of place. Your desire to merge with a partner's needs can mean you lose connection with your own needs. And if you do engage in a happy, intimate space, a partner might experience you as not being 100% present. That's what a 9 can do sometimes, even when you're fully in front of somebody. So when you're more integrated, more integrated nines that are understand that I have an opinion, I have thoughts, I have feelings. And using my voice is important, even if it creates temporary disharmony. This is good for long term intimacy with your partner. So integrated nines connect with your own desires and can express them. Because I think a lot of nines do connect and understand what they want, what they feel, but then they go to work to shove that down for temporary harmony, right? When you are a healthy, integrated nine, you nurture yourself and see your needs as being equal to your partners. You want me to try this? Great, great. But I've always wanted to try this. So let's do both. There's a way to have harmony and also honor who you are and what you need. You know, I talk a lot about the three centers of intelligence and how important we use all three are. Now your core enneagram type will, you know, default to primarily using that one first. So if you're an 8, 9 1, you'll go into your instinctual or body center of intelligence means you focus on like exactly what's happening right now and you process through instincts. But we do need to use our heart and we do need to think a little bit too. Now for the enneagrams 2, 3 and 4, you fall into the feeling center and you kind of operate in the heart and the love. And you might think, well, shit, then we're the best at sex. If we're all about love, well, that can get you into trouble as well, right? And you do need to be more present in your body and you do need to think a little bit. We can't just operate on feelings alone. And same same goes for my thinking center, folks. The five, six and sevens. It's one thing to think about, you know, the possibilities of what this might mean, but you also need to be present within your body and also your heart as well. Again, intimacy is one of the things in our life that when it's working, everything else in our life seems to be working well. And when it's not, it puts this big spotlight on, on all the areas of our life. And it doesn't mean that it's everything, but it, it is probably One of the deepest expressions of our true selves is in this intimate part of our life. And I know it's made light of and romanticized in all the things and movies and. And what's accessible to us at the drop of a hat now with the Internet can really skew our perspective and what we believe to be true. But why I love the Enneagram so much is it really takes us back to our soul, soul and our divine makeup. And regardless of what is happening out in the world and even in your life, at any moment you can decide that this is who I am and this is how I want to move forward. I'm not saying it'll be easy. And like I said, if you've experienced some stuff in your life that makes this even more challenging, I get it. And you'll have to be even more aware of where you go with this. I do. This is part of the work with me. Honestly, we talk about this a lot because it's important. It really, really is important. And if you're a parent like your messaging, even if it's not spoken, is very influential. As you can see in my example, mine wasn't always spoken, but it was non verbal as well. The things that I was taught told and modeled about sexuality and intimacy and I am here to help you too. Honestly, this is a big part of our life and if you feel like you're struggling maybe here or need some guidance, you can do that with me in a 90 minute session or you know, my one on one private VIP clients. We actually do talk quite a bit about this too because it is a part of our life and we want it to be beautiful and a true expression of who you are are. I know you do. I know I do. It's scary, it's vulnerable and it's magical too. So I am wishing you so much love and transformation in your life and in the bedroom. If you I want to give a shout out to my favorite podcast right now and has been for the last few years. I actually did a workshop with their entire team but she is a sex therapist and her husband works alongside her in the business. They are beautiful and it was an honor to work with their team because I do believe this work is so important in understanding and communicating our needs, our desires and not being ashamed or falling prey to, you know, socialized thoughts and and things around sex and intimacy. Seriously, go check them out. There are amazing and even me, the professor over here, I've learned a lot from them in my more integrated state of soul. So go check them out again.
