EP408: Doing the next BRAVE thing - That is the real flex.
15 Mar 2024 · 14 min
Episode EP408 (Lead with the Enneagram) — Tracy O'Malley argues that beyond doing the "next right thing" (more learning, strategy, certifications), real change comes from doing the next truly brave and courageous action specific to you. Using the Enneagram as a diagnostic spotlight, Tracy explains how knowing your type makes it easier to identify what brave action will move you forward, shares personal vulnerability (a procrastinated, scary email she'll send), and offers Enneagram blueprints and 90-minute coaching sessions as tools to accelerate that work. The episode closes with contact info, a CTA to get a blueprint, and an invitation to share and DM her.

Okay, I know you may have heard about the Enneagram or someone told you you need to know all about it. So here you are. But what the hell do you do with it?
Great news.
You are in the right place. Lead with the Enneagram is the show where you will actually learn how to use this incredible growth tool and apply it in all areas of your life, personally and professional. Hi, I'm Tracy. And to be honest with you, I was a skeptic of the Enneagram before I started to actually integrate it into my life. In fact, in true enneagram 8 style, I told my therapist to F off when she wanted me to dive into it well over a decade ago. Now that I have more than a decade of experience using the Enneagram and working on myself in my family with those closest to me, building my own bulletproof leadership, sales teams with one on one clients, couples, leading workshops for top Fortune 100 executives, and speaking to large audiences all across the globe about this powerful tool. I've got the proof and deep understanding of how to help you implement this into your life instead of it just being some fun thing you heard about. The Enneagram can be a complex model. But with me as your guide, I will show you how to first lead yourself in a powerful, effective and compassionate way and then help you lead others that way in your life as well. This podcast will have powerful conversations with guests, live typing sessions, and as well as solo episodes of Breaking down dynamics of the Enneagram and how they impact your life, career and relationships. So now let's dive in.
Hello and welcome back to another episode of Lead with the Enneagram. And I was feeling this hardcore this last week with not only myself but.
But.
Many of my clients.
As we are moving into quarter two of the year. And you know, it's always March, I. I find that it's a struggle bus month, you know, we get spring fever. You know, I'm in Arizona, so this.
Is like why we live here. But for those of you that live where it's you get a winter, you know, you're coming out of the darkness and daylight savings changes, you know, the excitement of spring comes, but maybe, you know, you're feeling quite stuck. Maybe like the weather is changing and the environment's changing, but you feel like you're stuck in the mud. And one of the things that I.
Have Learned in my 23 years of.
Personal development and recovery work.
Is this notion of doing the next right thing. And although I'm obsessed with that, I also see where there's problems in that, especially in this personal development space, because this is where people will start to lean into knowing more, gathering more information, going even to more events.
Getting more strategy, hiring and getting another coach, getting another certification. And, and I'm not saying there's anything wrong with any of those things because they're important and they're definitely going to you, right? But are they going to move the needle enough for you to feel like you're not stuck? And you know, I, as personal development has become very mainstream and you know, 23 years ago when I was getting into it, it wasn't popular. You know, you just didn't talk about it and like talking about going to therapy was like, ooh, what's wrong with you?
And so I think that personal development, the industry as a whole and the environment can be a slippery slope for some of you because doing the next right thing for a lot of you means just gathering more intel and doing more things that maybe don't serve you. And I've, I've fallen prey to that too. Like, I mean this is, this is where understanding my Enneagram type is very eye opening. And I can find myself in the pattern and in this, the framework in the system that me as an enneagram 8 can go. And you can know this. And if you haven't listened to last week's episode or last, the last episode I did where I talk about self awareness isn't always enough and it doesn't always move the needle. This is exactly what I'm talking about is, you know, you can be the most self aware person and understand yourself and even using this beautiful, incredible tool of the Enneagram to understand yourself and you can do the next right things on paper, but are you doing the next courageous and brave thing? Because that is seriously where things will change. And now this is the cool part is what is brave and courageous to me might not be brave and courageous to you or for you. And this is why I love the Enneagram and I have a client that was talking about this today and this is some of the advice I give a lot. And when you understand and know the framework of your Enneagram type, understanding what this means and knowing what to do that is brave and courageous for you, it can pinpoint this because we can justify all day long what we think is brave and courageous. And we, and it can be, and it can be scary, but is it really the really scary brave and courageous thing you need to do? And I was confronted with this last week, you know, because I choose to put myself and have friends that will call me out with love and, and empathy for what is brave and courageous for somebody like me and people that hold me accountable even when I hate it, to do the brave and courageous thing and because they know me. And one of my friends, God bless her heart, she said, I know I am one of the only people that will say this to you because most.
People are afraid of you.
And in the past, and I don't mean afraid of you like afraid of me because, like, I'm intimidating or anything like that, but because I am one of the leading authorities and experts and I teach this day in and day out, people assume that, like, I don't need accountability and that I have it all figured out. And, you know, yes, I do understand and I have self awareness that is pretty unmatched. But that doesn't mean I always do the next brave thing for me. And I wanted to bring that to attention for you too.
Right? The next brave and courageous thing isn't a strategy. It isn't. It is knowing the very thing that is your biggest fear. And in the framework of the Enneagram, it is right there and in plain as day for you. And doing the next brave and courageous thing means taking action in a way that is super, super vulnerable for this girl, which means appearing weak in some areas. And I can tell you for certain, there are two very specific areas that scare the shit out of me that I don't let anyone underneath the hood or behind the curtain to see. And it is holding me back from making the impact of I want to do. And so the next brave and courageous thing, as soon as I am done recording this podcast, is to send the email that I've been ghosting, apologize and take ownership for the fact that I have been dragging my feet even though I told this person I would do it because it's scary and it's brave and courageous and I haven't been willing to do it.
Even though I can write down a whole list of things that I have done that to the outside world. Look, look really great and really brave and courageous. And yes, in some ways they are, but they aren't the really scary brave and courageous thing. And so I wanted to send a.
Short episode out into the world for you today to ask yourself, do you.
Know what the brave and courageous thing is that you need to do that will actually.
Build your confidence? Like, I'm gonna tell you something, like, as soon as I send this email, I know I'm gonna sleep a fuck ton better. Because I've been procrastinating it for three months, three whole months. And for me, like, you know, I'm friends with lots of people where this isn't a scary, brave and courageous thing. They freely would do this, but for me, it is. And I have people that are cheering me on because they know once I do the brave and courageous thing, I'm going to step into what is next for me, what is big for me, what will impact most of you in a way that's beautiful and positive. And it will call in more abundance.
In my life in the form of support, relationships, money.
Impact, all the things.
And I'm terrified. And I'm going to do it. And I'm going to sleep really good. And it's 8 o' clock at night and I'm sitting in my closet in.
My pajamas recording this, knowing that by saying this all to you, even though you're not going to hear this until a day from now, but by the time you're listening to it, I'm gonna.
Have done the thing.
Even saying that out loud scares the.
Shit out of me. Because, you know, Are you really gonna know? Yes, I know. And I am somebody that operates in integrity, and I'm a person of my word. And I will always go first. I will always be willing to go first. I will always be willing to do the brave and courageous thing.
Because I like to know the way, go the way and show the way for not just me, not just for my. My kids, but for each and every one of you. Because I know you're here to do something pretty magical with your life. And if you're listening, you are somebody that really is raising your hand and saying, I want to grow and be the best version of myself. And sometimes what you're consuming in the online space and even in some of the events and coaching and programs that you've taken and. And, you know, I'm not singling out, but, like, they'll have you focusing so much on tasks and strategy when all you really have to do sometimes is the next brave thing. And if you're not sure what that is for you, this is why the Enneagram is a beautiful, powerful tool and why having the right information is really, really helpful. And that's why I created the blueprints, because they're accurate over 95% of the time. I've customized them just for you. And so once you know, without fail.
