EP418: Not Everyone Deserves Your Vulnerability - How Legends Lead with Precision
13 Feb 2025 · 2 min
Solo episode by Tracy O'Malley exploring the critical difference between transparency (sharing facts/story with low emotional risk) and vulnerability (sharing messy, real-time emotions with risk). Tracy uses personal disclosures (health, family, financial and spiritual challenges) and the Enneagram framework to show how to discern who deserves your vulnerability, how to build vulnerability muscles safely, and practical steps (circle inventory, vulnerability map) for leaders and individuals seeking deeper connection while protecting themselves.

Welcome.
You're in the right place. Let's begin your Legends journey.
Well, hey there. Welcome back to another episode. And today we are talking about one of the most important things to understand on the road to being legendary. And it is something very close to home to me. In present time and past. We're going to be talking about the difference between transparency and vulnerability. There is a huge, huge difference. And what makes somebody a legend in the ability to navigate this. It's not just accomplishments. It's not, you know, what you see out in the world. It's the stuff, honestly, that happens behind the scenes that makes you legendary. And understanding the difference between transparency and vulnerability, this was something that I didn't really understand. The full concept and the differences back in the day, even in the last 15 years, is when I really began to understand it and also harness it. You know, how you can use this understanding to elevate your leadership, your relationships, and the legacy you leave behind. This is probably one of the most important things that you'll need to understand. And before, you know, I go into, like, all the logistics of what triggers transparency and vulnerability is I wanted to share with you because, you know, I know a lot of you probably look to me as one of the stronger people that you know, and 100% that's true. I am really strong. Big Enneagram. Enneagram 8 energy, for sure. But this, this thing of vulnerability is something not just me and person, me personally, but Enneagram eights, all the Enneagram types. This will look a little different, and I'll definitely go into what that might look like for you if you're not an enneagram. But, you know, this last year, I've talked about it over the last few podcast episodes that are the most current, that this is honestly the most challenging, challenging time of my life ever. And I've had two beautiful conversations today with, honestly, appointments and conversations that I really wanted to cancel. I was like, honestly, I got nothing in the tank. I feel like I just want to be a hermit. I want to hide. And, you know, obviously, you know, I walk my talk. So instead of doing that, I leaned in instead of leaning, leaning out. But it's like I'm getting hit in every area of my life, honestly, you know, my physical health. I'm going in for wrist replacement surgery on Thursday of this week. So that is nagging at me. I've been living with severe chronic pain for well over a year, and it's affecting everything I'm doing emotionally. I'm in a blended family situation that is amazing and also really, really hard right now. There's some stuff going on that, like, things you wouldn't even put on your radar is going on, and that's really challenging. So emotionally, not just my own emotions, but, you know, helping those that I love and lead navigate those emotions, It's a lot spiritually, you know, it's like, okay, God gave me this gift and this calling, this mission on my life, and I feel paralyzed. Like, where are you? So I'm being tested spiritually and financially, too. Like, unreal, like, stuff, you know, I had my house got ripped Apart a couple months ago. And I've been fighting with insurance companies trying to get that covered, as well as bills I didn't see or have awareness of that are rolling in all at this time where, you know, I haven't been as present online. So business is a little slower than I like. So, like, physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially, I feel really, really vulnerable right now. And most of us, when we feel vulner vulnerable, we hide or we seek out connection in ways that don't serve us. And I want you to know I'm not immune to this. And I can teach this stuff. I can walk my talk, and it's still really hard. Honestly, it's not fun. Not fun at all. So I'll go into more of that as I kind of go through the episode with you and kind of give you more examples, because I think, you know, through personal stories of my own and, you know, clients of mine and people that I am really tight with, this helps you kind of of understand and grasp and integrate the meaning of this in your life. But this episode is all about equipping you with the tools to not only discern when and how to be vulnerable, but with who. I see this a lot. It's like we know we need to be vulnerable. We know we're craving it. And I see so often, especially with the people that I work with sometimes that we're. We're reviewing and showing that vulnerability maybe to those that can't hold that space or offer wisdom and insight that actually helps you. And it actually might even keep you spiraling more into, like, that desperation or this. This need for connection so badly that you'll tap into sources that will actually drain you. So I want to kind of give you the differences, help you understand the differences, how to shift how you navigate this so that, you know, you can really effectively lead love with integrity and impact. So what's the difference between transparency and vulnerability? There's a huge difference. You know, and I didn't. Like I said, I didn't understand really the full scope of this because I had spent my life not only not being vulnerable, but also very guarded. Right? Like lock and key couldn't get in. Like, I let you see what I wanted you to see. But the last 15 years, you know, especially as I got sober and my faith had gotten strength and my true understanding of what, like, honoring that faith meant to me and the divine and the universe and God and all of that meant to me, I realized that even though I was way less guarded than I had been, my prior 40 years, I really still wasn't being vulnerable very often, if at all, if I'm being honest. So transparency, this is what a lot of you are seeing. It's marketed to you, it's shown like it's a vulnerability, but that's not. Transparency is sharing facts, experiences, or truths without any emotional risk. It's about being open, but not necessarily raw. Right. I, you know, when I stepped on stages, you know, over a decade ago, and I was sharing parts of my story that, yeah, at the time that they were happening, really, really vulnerable. But as I was sharing it as part of the story, part of my keynotes, you know, everybody would come up to me, after me, like, oh, my gosh, you're so vulnerable. How do you. How are you so vulnerable? Even people crying and. And all of that. And I really took that to heart and I really. When they would say, like, you're so vulnerable, I'm like, yeah, I totally am. Until I understood the difference. Because the more that happened and the more that people would say that, I could feel it in my body, like, they don't know me, though. They don't really know me. And that's where vulnerability comes into play. Not just people that know you, however, vulnerability is the willingness to share your heart, your fears, your struggles honestly in real time without having any idea how you're going to get out of it. There's a huge risk involved, right, because you could be betrayed, it could be weaponized against you, it could be shared in rooms that you don't want it to, all sorts of things. So there is that risk involved, however, and this is the potential for deep connection, growth, support, all the things that we really crave and need to step into being the legend that we are. So, like I said, transparency is more like storytelling. Vulnerability is in the trenches going, I don't know how the I'm going to get out of this, and I'm scared out of my mind and, oh, my God, I don't know what to do. And I'm in this right now, and I thank God I understand this and have the right people around me and we'll get to that. I want you to kind of think of it like this. You know, transparency is like showing someone the blueprint of your house. Or even on socials, you're doing reels. You're, like taking people through all the pretty parts, even the lay of the land, right? Vulnerability is in inviting them inside the house to see everything, the mess, the beauty of how you live. And I. I mean, I don't let a lot of people come to my house. I really don't. Not because it's a mess or anything like that, but because this is a sacred space for me. And I want you to think about your own kind of soul as that. Now we do need that. There's nothing better when, than when I have people here, especially the chosen discerned people that I have picked to come into my home. Not just my physical home, but my soul home as well. Both are really important. Vulnerability and transparency are both really, really important, but they're, they need to be used differently. Okay? Transparency builds credibility and trust. And in my early days in this space about 15 years ago, you know, I was transparent with all parts of my story. The parts that I had kept under lock and key, the parts that honestly could be seen as very embarrassing and regretful, right? And that's where I built community and that's where I built credibility and trust that not only could I overcome, show up, work my way through that, but I understand, I really do understand most things that people would tell me without judgment. Because if I'm here being transparent and showing you what I've been through and how I'm on the other side of it, then maybe I could help you too. And made millions of dollars and helped millions of people with that transparency. Really, really important. But, but vulnerability. Vulnerability creates connection and intimacy into me. You see, and this is where, when things are hard and when things are good, these are the people that you allow into the messy parts, the, the rise up. You know, you see the, the story, but you see the glory, but you don't know the story. Vulnerability is letting people in on the story, especially as you go. That's the raw, the messy. Anybody that's done anything great, it is as, or you've had to, you know, have help, whatever that looks like. But both are really, really important. And it wasn't honestly, the last few years I've really tapped into vulnerability. Not just like within my business and people I hire, that's one thing. You know, when you pay people to, you know, lift the curtain and see behind it and, and all the things, you know, where you need support in your business, that's one kind of vulnerability. But emotional vulnerability with people that you love, that you lead is a next level thing, honestly. And the last few years, I've really exercised this because I recognize even with the people closest to me when I was struggling, I wasn't leaning in, I wasn't leaning in. However, you know, they were leaning into me. And I realized that this was a little lopsided, and I didn't have resentment over that. In fact, my ego really liked it. They would trust me so much with their vulnerability. I mean, I'm trusted by so many people and I don't throw that around with like arrogance or anything like that. I recognize the responsibility and the reward that comes with that. And I'm a vault. So, like, I get it and I have the wisdom to maybe help somebody through something that's very vulnerable in, in their life. But as I'd up leveled my circle, there was some friction that would happen. And I've had fallouts in relationships because of my lack of vulnerability and my lack of willingness to be vulnerable with certain people. Now that isn't a bad thing. There was some discernment going on there, however, especially with the tight, beautiful, wise, incredible circle that I have now. In order to have that intimacy and connection with them, to whom much is given, much is required. And with great reward comes a great responsibility. And it is required for me to be vulnerable. Now, that being said, it's still terrifying. Every day. It's terrifying for me. You know, last week's episode I recorded right before I went to the girls trip in Mexico, a mini mastermind, if you will, with all the people that I trust with my life. Literally. There's seven other women that almost all of them, I would share the most vulnerable moments and in fact did. And it was really, really hard. Two of them are like my tight, tight, tight, tight soul sisters. Like, we even got tattoos together. Like, like sacred, sacred sisters in my life. And I was kicking and screaming like, I don't want to be vulnerable. I don't want to be vulnerable. I feel less than. I feel inadequate. I feel like a imposter. I feel fraud. I'm like, who the am I? I even said things like, maybe I should just get a job. Like, this is way harder doing this. And being the most authentic version of myself, the most vulnerable version of myself, part of me was like, why don't I just sit my ass in a cubicle, make six figures and, and phone it in? And that tells you right there where I'm at with my vulnerability now. Discernment and vulnerability. And this is where understanding enneagram, your enneagram specifically can help you. Because not everyone deserves your vulnerability. Not everyone can handle your vulnerability. And in fact, you share it with the wrong people and you could actually end up way, way worse. So not everybody has earned the right to your heart. And that's not only okay, it's necessary. Like Even the people closest to you. There are certain things that I will share with my soul sisters that I won't share with my partner as deep. Right. I'll share it, but it's more transparent than vulnerable sometimes, and that's okay. Like, you have to understand the right people to share the right things with at the right time. And I know you might be thinking, like, well, trace, like, this is getting harder and harder. Not only is being vulnerable hard, but then I have to discern who I can and can't be vulnerable with. And, yes, this will take messing up from time to time. This will take learning the lessons through sharing vulnerably, maybe with the wrong people at the wrong time, the wrong situations, right? So how I really discern this, and I might be a little different than you, you know, as an enneagram 8, strength is like everything that motivates me. Being strong, powerful in a healthy way is everything to an enneagram 8. And for other Enneagram types, that might be different, you know, significance, you know, if you're two, three or four might be your thing. Or having some certainty if you're five, six or seven is your thing. You know, the eights, nines, and ones are about independence, autonomy, and control and what that looks like. So what vulnerab, what is vulnerable to me may be different than you. However, how do you discern the right people? Well, environment is stronger than willpower. I've talked about this a lot, about taking an inventory about who's in your circle, who's in your life, who's in your bed, right? You have to really check this. Like, if I was scared out of my mind, if I was in my worst place, not only could I trust this person to be there for me, even if they're going through their own shit, but could they offer up some wisdom, insight, direction, guidance if I was in that situation? And if you don't have anybody in your life right now that that's a yes. Like, yes, this person. Yes, this person. You need to start making room for people that can. It's crucial to be a legend. You have to have the right support. You do. No legend ever did shit all by themselves. And trust me, if I could have found a way to do it, I would have done it. Do they have the capacity to hold space for you? A, without judgment, and B, even if they're in their own shit? This was a defining factor a few years ago with somebody that I was super vulnerable with. This person was really great begging me to be vulnerable with them. And I was, to a degree. However, I knew if they were going through something there, it was zero capacity to be there for me if I needed a lifeline. And she showed her true colors with that. Like I tested it a couple times and I was like, yeah, no. And so didn't make the cut. And it was messy and ugly and hurtful on both ends. Number two, do they, have they demonstrated trustworthiness over time? Like have you told them something that remained in the vault? Or did you low key get somebody kind of inquiring in later after telling this person, are they invested in your growth and well being? And you know, this is where taking an inventory with who you are partnering with, business, friendship, and you know, romantically, is this somebody that if you soar and fly, are they going to feel threatened? Are they going to feel left behind? Are they going to try to dim your light or, or ask you things that, like, why would you do that? You know, maybe with some criticism. The consequences of misplaced vulnerability can cost you decades, it can cost you thousands. So this is a really, really important thing to understand. And I know in the time that we're in right now, we are craving connection more than any time in our lives. I think, you know, with, with social media and the Internet, like we can have this illusion that we're all connected. But I think in this quest for true deep connection and intimacy, we're thrown around our vulnerability to anybody that'll take it. And it is really stunting your growth. It's making you feel more alone, even more depressed. You might be numbing out even more or hiding out if you're like me. But misplaced vulnerability can also lead to betrayal, burnout, the titanium walls like I used to put up, with extra layers and a moat all, all the way around it. And this is why legends learned from these experiences. This is why you have to practice it. There's no guarantee, even with my tight, tight, tight, tight, tight, tight inner circle, it could go sideways at some point. But you have to build this muscle and you have to kind of practice doing this, the discernment and the vulnerability instead of shutting down. And this is really, really, really hard. So why the enneagram? Why is understanding your enneagram framework not just your type, but the framework attached to it, including your tri type. And this is something that I do in my one on one sessions. We go through the tri type as well. But if you just want your framework to start with, you can get the blueprint, your custom blueprint, your, your accurate enneagram type@omalley.com the work with me section. Get your blueprint. You'll have the accurate Enneagram type. You'll have, you know, both your wings, your the compass which is the growth and stress. So that you can start using this framework to help you discern the right people to be vulnerable with, but also kind of look at the blind spots that you have around vulnerability and how that how you might go to avoid it or misuse your vulnerability. The Enneagram does provide a roadmap. Think of it like an atlas, right? You know, we have our home base, which is our core Enneagram type, but we venture out. You know, if you are somebody doing anything, if you're a legend, you are absolutely venturing out of home base. You aren't just this hermit in your body, in your soul, in your communities. And the Enneagram can provide this navigation system and roadmap on, you know, especially when it's time to get vulnerable or you're taking an inventory of the people that are in your circle or in your home. It also, you know, helps you understand the deep seated motivations and fears that are driving your behaviors. Because the behaviors are just a symptom. But understanding the motives and the fears behind it will help you be able to course correct, get back in the right lane, things like that. When you know your core Enneagram type and your tri type, you can identify where you might overuse transparency or as a shield or avoid vulnerability out of fear. The self awareness really allows you to, you know, navigate these relationships and leadership with precision. It's not about labeling yourself. It's not about a cutesy little thing like, oh, I'm an enneagram8. That's so cool like that. Like I don't care about that. In fact, when I was learning about the Enneagram over a decade ago, I did not want anything to do with this. I'm like, I don't need another label lady. I was in rehab. I'm like, I got plenty of labels coming in here. It's not that at all. It is like, it's leveraging your strengths and also compassionately addressing your blind spots. Because we all got blind spots. I don't care how woke and how evolved and how much of the work that you do. You're going to have blind spots. Just like when you drive a car. I don't care what you drive, whether it's a Lambo or you know, you know, a Geometro, like whatever car you drive is going to have a blind spots and if you don't check the blind spots or know where to look for the blind spots, you're going to wreck. Same thing with your own self awareness. It's why the framework of the Enneagram is super powerful, because it lays it right out there for you. These are going to be your blind spots. You're always going to have to check them. And especially when it comes to vulnerability and transparency, it's really, really important. So like I said, using the Enneagram as a tool for growth, self awareness, not just some personality test or some cute little thing that you can share on Instagram. It's like, oh my God, look at my Enneagram type. Who cares? Like, what are you gonna freaking do with it? It. That's why I'm so passionate about the Enneagram. It's why I teach it, integrate it. I go into companies. I'm building a certification program for you because I'm that passionate about using this tool. Here's some practical tools also for mastering transparency and vulnerability. You know, checking your. Your inner circle. Practicing the transparency in professional settings by clearly communicating your intentions, boundaries and expectations, even if it may not be received well. Really testing, and I don't mean testing in a manipulative way, but like really kind of testing the foundation of the relationships you do have. Friendships, business partnerships, Collaborations. Your romantic partnerships. For those of you with older children, one of the best things I ever did was be so authentically vulnerable with my own children. Not to burden them with my fears and things like that, but to show them what that looks like, right? You can't, you know, expect your kids to know how to emotionally navigate things if you don't show that to them. You know, my kids are in their late 20s now, 27 and 28, and not only has it really served them by me showing them my true vulnerability in real time, it's made us closer. I am their trusted, wise counsel pretty much for anything in their life. And that's because of my vulnerability, not because I'm their mom. Building muscles, the vulnerability muscles in safe places. And again, you're going to have to discern what are safe places. I don't give a. If you've known somebody 20 years, they may not be that safe person. In fact, especially if you are somebody that has grown and evolved, they might know the prior version of you, the less grown version of you. So start small with trusted people and gradually kind of expand that. Like I said, I have probably six or seven on speed dial if I needed, and some differently than others that if I am in a bind, which I feel like I am right now. Like I said, every area of my life, I feel so raw and so exposed and so vulnerable. And any given day, instead of hiding out, I am reaching out to one of them. And it's still really, really hard. No matter how strong I build this muscle, it's going to be really, really hard. Creating a vulnerability map of your relationships, right? Who gets transparency, who gets vulnerability and who gets nothing? You know, having acquaintances and people that you enjoy is fun and important and gets you out of the house from time to time. But just because you, you go have a girl's night or a guy's night doesn't mean that that person gets the raw stuff. They might just get, you know, a different version of you. And that's okay. You're not being inauthentic. You know, I have gone and done things with people that. Not very much anymore because I just don't want to spend my time like that. But there are times that it's like, yeah, they're just getting what you see is what you get out here. You know, the, the, the sacred group gets the messy, temper tantrum throwing, emotional meltdown version of me, which is very rare. But when it's, when it is there, I need nothing but the best around me. Not just the best people, but the wisest, the, even those that are going through things. You know what I mean? And I would, I would start with that. Like, look at the people in your life and are they able to be there for you when they are going through maybe even some of the hardest times of their life? I would say that's probably one of the number one kind of discerning ways to, to decide this. And it doesn't make them bad or, you know, and, you know, certain things in their life might be so profound that even if they could, they, they're not going to right now. And you know, we can chalk that up for like, some understanding. But like, cons consistently look at this, you know, that, that prior friend of mine, like, always going through something. As long as everything was good, I could lean in. But it was almost never right. And so I didn't. And it created this disconnect and friction and lack of trust her for me on, on her part. And I totally get that. If, if somebody isn't being vulnerable with you, but you're being vulnerable with them, like, there's a, a trust imbalance, there's a intimacy imbalance, and that, that's. Those aren't the ones that get all of your vulnerability. And I've been that person to other people where I was not gonna go there sometimes for really great reasons and other times because I hadn't practiced enough. Right. The legendary mindset in leading with integrity. I'm not out of integrity by not being vulnerable with everyone right now. Being transparent, I think is really, really important, especially in the line of work that I'm doing. And I think transparency is in your relationships and with even your children. But we need our ride or dies. Life is lifing us at warp speed, and I can't tell you enough. If you had asked me 15 years ago about vulnerability and leaning in, I would have laughed. I've been like, I don't fucking need anyone. If it's to be, it's up to me. You know, as an enneagram 8, that's kind of how I tend to operate. Some of you might do the opposite. And when you're in crisis, it's like, I need the committee around. There's, you know, these big ends and swings on the end of the pendulum that we have to really check. That's why the Enneagram can certainly help you understand that legends don't just rise. You know, they rise with purpose. They rise with clarity and courage. And. And the biggest part of courage is letting people support you and offer wise counsel. You know, legends know who they are. They know their worth, and they know how to navigate the world with both transparency and vulnerability. So where in your life can you step into more of this? And I'm not somebody that's big into journal prompts, but I really want you to map this out. I want you to map out. Make a list of the people in your life right now and maybe put little boxes. Transparent, vulnerable. Transparent, vulnerable. Are you able to be one or both with that? And, you know, create a grouping, even if it's one person of somebody you can be vulnerable with that is not only safe, trustworthy, loyal, is willing to tell you the hard truth. Truth with compassion and kindness, hold you accountable, give you guidance and insight. Right? I'm. I know as I'm saying this list, you're like, I don't have anybody like that. I don't have anybody like that. And if you don't, one of or both of these things need to happen. You need to make room for these people. If you're spending your time with people that don't check those boxes and you are short on time, you're going to have to make room for them. I had to clean house to have the group That I have now wasn't easy, wasn't fun, was very, very messy and painful. Right. But worth it. Worth it. So you have to make room for them or you have to kind of practice being vulnerable and discerning those right people. So this is. This is one of the hardest lessons that you will probably continue to do. And, you know, as I have really practiced and built this muscle strong over the last, you know, decade plus, I'm not saying it necessarily gets easier, you know, and especially as you go to new levels, like, it gets harder in different ways. And I was talking to somebody the other day, you know, it's kind of like walking out on a tightrope. And if you've ever done it and I've done it, and I don't care if you are a professional tightrope walker, the first step or two is very wobbly. It's like you're. You're recalibrating and trying to get your balance, but once you get momentum, if you stop, you're going to fall. But if you get momentum and move forward and keep doing it and go forward, pretty soon you'll be able to do flips on it. Right? And I've been able to do that on several different tightropes in my life. I feel like I'm at, like, level 2000 right now. So, you know, the higher up you are, the. The farther you're going to fall down. So me taking the step out on the tightrope, I'm a little gun shy sometimes. And I know you might be, too. I know you might be, too. But it's. It's about letting go, taking the leap, getting the momentum, moving forward so that no matter how high up you are, eventually you'll start doing backflips just in time to move to the next rope up. And I wanted to share that with you because I know, like, we see a lot of the fluffy out of there and these, you know, one, two, three steps to be a legend that, like, seriously, I'm so tired of, and the. The fake stuff that won't help you. This is one of the number one things you have to have in your life. The right people, the willingness, the practice in being vulnerable. It will be scary, but that's how legends do it. They stand on the front line, they take the hits, they get back up, they keep going even when everything in their body is saying, recoil. This, I'm out. Hide out, shut down. Legends rise up again and again and again and again and again. They do it over and over and over. Again, and that requires vulnerability and transparency. So I wanted to share that with you. You I did this. This was really hard, especially because in real time I'm feeling super vulnerable in all areas and I did not want to hit record, I did not want to show my face here. But here I am walking the talk, as I always do, sometimes more than others, to show you. But this, this era, for me and I think for the world, we need more of this. We need more of the vulnerability from people that we trust, respect, have credibility. And if I can be that voice for you, it is not lost on me the responsibility that comes with that. And I promise you, I will always bring it real, raw in real time, usually to share with you so that not only can I serve you, but you have no idea how much this helps me to knowing that you care, that you listen, that you share with me the impact that this has on you. If this has been something you needed to hear, please share this with somebody. Leave a review, slide into my DMs, leave a comment somewhere like, honestly, this is really. I feel like I'm on this island all by myself sharing this episode with you. So it would mean the world to me if you could kind of kindly share your aha's and insights on this. You can find me on Instagram at Tracy underscore, O', Malley, on LinkedIn, on Facebook, on all the things. And like I said, if you benefit from this podcast, if, whether it's this episode or one of the other 417 that I've recorded over the last five years, please go and leave a review. That's how I get more people to hear the message, to have hope, to shine their light into the world. We need more people that are shining bright, light, authentic, true and vulnerable and transparent. And if I have to go first continuously, I will do that. So share the message. And in the meantime, you know, be gentle with yourself. This is not for the weary or the weak. You're brave, courageous, strong and beautiful. And so it is. We'll see you soon.
Thank you for joining me on the Legends journey. Remember, legends aren't born, they're built. It's in the Rising, the falling, and the Rising again that we become who we're meant to be. So as you step back into your life, ask yourself, what's the one thing you can do today to nurture, protect and guide not just yourself, but those around you? That's where the magic happens. If this episode resonated with you, don't keep it to yourself. Share it with someone who's ready to step into their legendary self. And don't forget to subscribe so you'll never miss an episode. I'd love to hear your thoughts. So head over to my Instagram at Tracy Underscore o', Malley, and let me know what's landing for you. Until next time, keep rising, keep leading, and keep living your legendary legacy. You got this.
