EP420: Where the Edge Is : Why the Enneagram is Your Greatest Power Move
6 May 2025 · 28 min
Tracy O'Malley, an Enneagram 8, introduces her podcast by positioning the Enneagram as a tool for transformation and leadership, not personality trivia. She discovered it in rehab and now teaches it to corporate clients, focusing on integration and ethical use of the system.

The world does not need more people who know their Enneagram type. It needs more people who know how to wield it like a weapon of transformation. Most people find out their type and use it like a shield. A way to justify why they stay stuck, reactive, half awake. I'm just a two. I'm just a seven. I'm just an eight. But legends. Legends don't hide behind their types or their numbers. They master their wiring. They dismantle the cages they were born into. They stop asking for permission. They stop living inside old survival stories. They reclaim their edge. And they sharpen it into something unbreakable. This isn't another feel good conversation about personality types or the Enneagram. This is the place where leaders are forged and excuses go to die. If you're ready to burn the blueprint of who you think you are and build the legacy of who you were born to be, you're exactly where you need to be. Let's go.
Hey.
Hey. And welcome to the Enneagram Edge.
I'm your host, Tracy o'.
Malley.
Enneagram expert leadership coach, recovering control freak, and your personal translator for the shit you keep repeating but don't totally understand yet.
Now, if you're new here, buckle up.
This is absolutely not another fluffy Enneagram podcast where we talk about how sweet it is to be an Enneagram too and bake cookies for your friends. No, this is the real deal. This show is about using the Enneagram as a tool for transformation. Not just information and definitely not some party trick.
Because knowing your type is cute, but.
Embodying your highest expression, that is where your edge is. Every week, I'm bringing you the truth behind the types and the hype. How to stop self sabotaging, lead like a damn legend, and actually understand the.
People in your life without wanting to.
Scream into a pillow. Or if you're an enneagram8 like me.
Not throat punch someone.
We'll talk about leadership, relationships, business, healing, high performance, and why couples therapy isn't working. But fully understanding your Enneagram blueprint might just save your marriage. I'll drop solo episodes behind the curtain coaching, and the occasional rant when someone calls the Enneagram just a personality test. So if you're ready to stop playing small and start showing up with unshakable clarity, confidence, and compassion for yourself and others. This is your space. You've got an edge.
Now let's use it. Hello. Welcome to a new era. You might have noticed the name change. I cringe even saying that. You know, I Hate the word rebranding. I hate all of that stuff. It, like, makes me cringe, quite honestly. And here I am doing it. And the main reason for that is because I'm here to talk about the Edge and that you have. And when I was thinking about the podcast and how that looks and what I'm known for, I'm known for the Enneagram, So I'm just going to own it, you know, and for the longest time, I was resistant to it, because the work I do, the wisdom I have, goes way deeper than that. However, the Enneagram is my fast pass to help you become the legend that you are. So here we are with the Enneagram Edge lead like a legend. And, you know, I'm not just an Enneagram expert. I'm not. However, I will say this. I am like the master of the Enneagram. And I know there's tons, tons of beautiful, beautiful Enneagram educators out there. And that being said, most know how to give you the information. And thank goodness for that, because I wouldn't be here talking about the Enneagram if they weren't here. However, there are very, very, very few that can show you how to integrate. You know, the Enneagram is a guide for those ready to lead with power, precision, and purpose. And I want you to think about, like, a scalpel, for instance. You know, a scalpel is a beautiful tool, but the most skilled surgeons know how to use it with precision, with. With so much expertise. And that is my. The Enneagram is my scalpel, and I am a master surgeon with it. So I'm not going to do cutesy, cute, fun little Enneagram talk. You might see that on my social media, because I love it when I watch TV or movies or, you know, pop culture or anything like that. I'm always kind of like, my brain is always kind of going into, like, who are they? And. And I've been doing that since I was a little girl. And I kind of want to take you back there for a moment. You know, growing up, where I did, in the environment I did as a little girl from the age of four, I would say that.
Anytime I was in front of somebody, I was trying to figure out where they fit into the puzzle. Right? You know, growing up in an alcoholic home, I had to really have my thumb on the pulse of what situation was in front of me at any given time. So I knew how to respond, react, swallow my voice, use my voice, whatever. And I, you know, if you've seen the movie, the Hangover. And Zach Galifianakis, the guy who wears Carlos on, he's. He's so funny, by the way, when he walks into the casino, the scene with the casino, and all of a sudden, all these equations start going off above his head. That's pretty much me all the time. And it has been me since I was a little girl. And although I had my own little mapping system of understanding who was in front of me, most of it was for protection. And it was to survive. It wasn't always to thrive like I use my mapping system today. And when I was introduced to the enneagram 13 years ago in rehab by my therapist, again, I was resistant to it. So if you're new here, I'm going to share the story as we go along this journey on the Enneagram edge. But I was really resistant to it. I came into it kicking and screaming. And my therapist, who's also an enneagram8 like me, she was like, my dear, your best thinking has gotten you here. And how about you allow this tool to open up your mind, open up your heart, and help you get out of the box that not only the world has put you in, but you have also put yourself in. And so. Touche, Nancy, you had a point. And immediately when I surrendered and allowed myself to dive into the beauty that is the Enneagram, I realized that this was the mapping system that I had kind of been using my whole life. But now I had a language and a framework of this mapping system, and I became so skilled with it, the first five years I was using it, nobody knew I was using it, not even my own children. And I was using it like a scalpel, a precision tool, a power tool, my Swiss army knife, if you will. And.
When the Enneagram became trendy, so thank you, information teachers out there, because you put it on the map in a way that it hadn't been before. I could kind of come out of the Enneagram closet not only with my secret power tool, but also with such a skilled mastery of it that, you know, companies like Google and John Deere and Amazon and Facebook now and YouTube now bring me into to teach this beautiful mapping system with precision to their leaders. And, you know, we're not going to talk about, you know, what it's like to be an enneagram4 or any of those things. I mean, I can talk about that all day long, but I'm more interested in how the Enneagram can give you an extra edge, how it can fast track your. Your transformation, your Growth, your leadership, your parenting, your partnership, whether it's romantic or professional, and really allow you to use this beautiful tool that as well. And I'm so honored to be the person in this space that can give this to you. This podcast isn't going to be for dabblers, although if you're a dabbler, please, you know, continue to listen. My goal is to help you fall in love with this power tool the way that I have to use it in integrity and with nothing but beautiful intent. Because here's the deal. Tools are amazing, but they're only as beautiful as the intent behind them. You know, if you think about a chainsaw, very powerful tool gets the job done. However, you know, when used out of integrity, cue in, you know, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, like it can. It can do a lot of damage too. And I've seen lots of beautiful tools in the world, in the professional and personal development space be weaponized and the Enneagram included. And a lot of times when I'm speaking to people about the Enneagram, I hear this all the time. I wish I had found this sooner. And I'm not going to lie. When I understood the framework and knew that this mapping system was dropped in my lap when it was, I also felt that way. And I also know had I had this tool any sooner, I might have used it to control, to protect, to survive rather than thrive. And so I'm going to give you this disclaimer. Please, please, please use this tool for good. Use this tool for growth. Use this tool for self awareness and self accountability and compassion and empathy and grace and service. Please, please, please don't use this tool to control, to manipulate or any of those things like, like I did. And you know, so I do believe that when the student you listening right now, especially around the Enneagram, when the student is ready, the master appears. And I don't claim to be masterful at many things, but people and communication and culture and this framework and this mapping system, I will go toe to toe with anyone on. And I say that with so much humility because I've been humbled because I wasn't always good at this. And usually the people that become masterful at something, they usually had some really humble beginnings. And, and I absolutely have. And this is the beauty of being 53 years old as well, is I got a lot of experience and a lot of mistakes that I've made in a lot of things that have humbled the fuck out of me. And so I plan to bring more of that to you, weave in personal stories, obviously, as I go. But I want you to know, if you're here interested in the Enneagram, you're in the right place. Because information doesn't equal transformation. Those of you that have been around a long time know that I say that all the time. It's the integration of this information that transforms lives. And that's what I'm here to do. And if you're new here, welcome. If you're riding, been riding with me a long time, welcome back. This isn't just a rebrand, it's a revolution. My goal is to really bring this tool to light for good. I couldn't keep pretending that I wasn't known as the Enneagram Girl.
You know, it's funny because my social media isn't as great it is recently as far as, like, putting my name behind the Enneagram a little bit, but pretending that I'm not known as. This was really.
Disheartening for me. You know, if you. If you know anyone that is good at something, you know, we're all humans, and we are more than just what we do. We're more than what we're known for. And although I am known to be the Enneagram Girl, and although I was resistant to it, this is my zone of genius. And.
I couldn't hide anymore. I really, really couldn't because I was being selfish, self absorbed. By withholding something so beautiful that can help you transform your business, your life, your families, your lineage. Honestly, this has transformed.
My lineage moving forward. This has helped me break all the generational, every single bit of it. It has allowed me to be in partnership with soul friendships, with my lover, with my children, with the people that hire me on a new level because of this tool. So this podcast is an invitation not to be informed, but to be transformed. You know, why this shift was necessary is because of the mainstream Enneagram world. A lot of it has become Enneagram entertainment, which I understand. It's fun. You know, I love astrology. I love human design. I love all the things. In fact, my daughter's an astrologer, so I love it. I love that it's bringing at least awareness to it, but that's kind of where it stops in the mainstream stream thing. And I see, like, this stuff gets shared, and although it's great information, if you don't know what the fuck to do with it, what's the point? It's entertainment. And. And I'm not here to inspire. I'm not here to entertain. You. I'm here to help you use this so that you're not wasting your time learning about something that's just cute. Quite honestly. There, the typing quizzes, the free assessments, even some of the paid ones feel more like, you know, fun horoscope stuff. Type memes that make people feel seen but not changed. And I'm here, like, I love the memes and I will share them. However, that's not where it stops. That's fun, that's light, gets a good laugh. But this isn't another playground for your ego or for you to waste your time, right? This is the battleground for your greatness. And I want to help you step into it. I want to help give you that edge. That edge of who you already are, but maybe has been buried for so long, or you've been told that you know you shouldn't do that. The Enneagram isn't just a map of who you are. It's a map out of who you've been taught to be or who you've been conditioned to be, or who you maybe have been forced to be. If you are like me in any ways, it reveals your operating system that you're unconsciously running, right? When you understand the whole mapping framework of your Enneagram type down to your tri type, you can pivot with compassion, with empathy, with grace, with class.
For yourself and also for others.
A lot of times, this operating system is controlling your leadership, your relationships, the culture in your home, the culture in your business, and your own expansion. So understanding your internal wiring isn't optional. If you want to lead at a legendary level, it's mandatory. Legends. Legends know who the they are, and they know how to leverage it for good. And my hopes in bringing this beautiful tool to you at a deeper, deeper level will allow you to do that faster so that you can live the life that you desire, the one that you deserve. And why I called it the Enneagram Edge, right, Because I'm a little edgy. I'm an enneagram8, after all. I'm always going to be a little spicy.
Spiciness cloaked in compassion, though, which wasn't always the case. And the moment the edge found me, right, the Enneagram Edge found me. Like I said, was in rehab. Not my shining moment, by any means. And I understood that this spiciness, this edginess, I had the receipts to show that that had worked out very well for me in a lot of areas of my life. However, it wasn't enough. It was also creating a wrecking Ball effect in the very, very things that mattered most to me, you know, my kids and my legacy and my leadership, not just professionally, but also, you know, my next generation of, of my, of my lineage. And it saved my ass, honestly. What it also revealed to me is I didn't have to change who I was. Because I know a lot of you listening right now. You're probably in the professional space. You're an entrepreneur, you're a mom, you're a dad. And you catch yourself doing things that you're like, oh my God, why do I do this every time? And you meet yourself with judgment, criticism, shame, insert the weapon that you use. And thank goodness I was in a very humble, not shining moment and was open enough and self aware enough to know that although I had the receipts that some of this had worked out well for me, it was destroying the very thing that mattered the most to me. And so this, this beautiful openness to this tool saved my ass and helped me break through and also allowed me to understand who I was, that I didn't have to change who I was, but I had to be responsible and accountable for the come from, right? The things about each Enneagram type, and they're all unique and they're all important and not one is better than the other. However, the very superpower for each Enneagram type can only, only be your superpower if it's coming from love, compassion, empathy, grace, service, fun, innocence. Right? So that spiciness about me like that is my superpower. It's why people feel safe and seen and protected and, and guided so well by me today. Because it is coming from the love, compassion, empathy, service, Grace, fun, innocence. 90% of the time. I'm still human after all, and so are you now. That same intensity, that same spiciness became a wrecking ball, a kryptonite in my life when it was coming from fear, insecurity, unworthiness, shame, guilt and ego. And each Enneagram type has that same capability. You're are your superpowers. My superpowers are not going to be the same as an Enneagram 3 or 2 or 9 or, you know, any of the other eight types. And it doesn't have to be, but I am responsible and accountable for my come from at all times so that my superpowers can shine and find its place in this world and in my leadership and in, you know, my momming and in my partnering and in my friendships. And I want to allow you to use this tool to step into that legendary space too. This has also been very powerful in my professional life, too, because as an enneagram 8, you know, I like to do things on my own. I don't want to have to rely on anyone. I want to be independent, the lone wolf. And I know there's a lot of you listening right now that may feel that way, whether you're an enneagram8 or not. Right? But me understanding that instead of judging it or saying, well, that's just how I am, it has allowed me to become more vulnerable, which is, you know, the virtue of the enneagram8 and allow people to help me. I'm not saying it's easy. I'm not saying that understanding this makes it easier. However, I have the roadmap in order to allow myself to step into that and. And therefore becoming the highest version of an enneagram 8. So that's when I realized that self awareness isn't going to save me, and it's not going to save you either. It's how you leverage your framework, how you leverage the navigation system and the map of the Enneagram. And this is where self mastery comes into play. So what you can expect moving forward from this show with Edge, I'm always going to bring the edginess. We're going to get into deep dives into the real Enneagram framework, not the fluffy stuff. You can find some of that on my Instagram and stuff like that. We're going to talk about how you dismantle some of the older operating systems. Again, we're not changing who you are so you can breathe and exhale. Now, we're not changing who you are, but you need to understand your operating system. You need to understand where you might go when. When shit's hitting the fan or when you're triggered or when you find yourself judging your best friend. Right? And how to not sabotage the very life that you deserve, the one that you desire. We're going to talk about how you can lead yourself more effectively so you don' feel like an imposter when you're leading others. You know, I'm going to spit hard truths at you. High standards, you know, high integrity. Again, this is a tool that is not to be used to manipulate, control, weaponize, any of those things. And of course, we're talking about legendary leadership in your home team and your professional teams built from the inside out. Yeah, I'm very excited about this. I haven't been this excited about the podcast in a long, long time. And if you've been around a while, you know, year My word was emerge. And I felt like I was doing the opposite, quite honestly, because I recorded maybe three podcasts last year after five years of doing this, and I loved it. But what I was really doing was emerging into this.
Softer, better, legendary kind of leader for you. And I don't want to play small either. I. You know, I'm raising two kids. They're older now, they're 27 and 28, and I have to model the very thing I'm telling them they can do. And although sometimes this stuff is uncomfortable, I'd much rather stay in my little compound here in Gilbert, Arizona, with my pack of dogs. And if you could see what's in front of me right now, I literally have about 250 pounds of dog sitting at my feet right now. I would much rather typically kind of just be in my little isolation bubble. I love it. It's safe. It's where I am, you know, not in vulnerable situations. But I'm not here to play small, and I know you aren't either. So if you're ready to stop playing small and hiding behind your Enneagram type or making excuses for it and calling it growth, then buckle the hell up. Seriously. Because we're just getting started. And I'm so excited to bring more of the Enneagram wisdom integration to you.
So we got some good episodes coming, and I can't wait to help you accelerate your transformation personally and professionally. You know, I work with a lot of couples, too. It's some of my favorite work, you know, the romantic partnerships and also, like, business partnerships. Besties. I've just come off. Last month, I did. It was so freaking cool. I did a in person workshop at Yellowstone with eight besties. And we. We did the whole Enneagram for the who group of friends. They've been friends for close to 20 years, and that was really, really fun. Anytime we can compassionately, openly.
Want to understand each other better, everything gets better. Everything gets better. And I want you to have all the juicy parts of life, every little bit of it. And so do I. And here's the thing, you know, personal development, personal growth is not a box we check. Right? It's a. It's a decision. Every day, every moment. And when you understand with precision how to leverage this tool in your life, everything gets better. You can flow, you can have more fun, you make a lot more money, you have better sex, you have a solid relationship with your children. And that's what I'm here to do. So few favors I want to ask, number one, subscribe subscribe to this podcast so you don't miss any of it. I promise you, I'm not going to go MIA on you. I don't want you to miss a single Fire. Fire. Fire starter. That's going to change how you lead and love your life. Number two, if you haven't done so already, the enneagram 8&me doesn't even want to ask this, but please leave a review, Please. That's how more people will get a hold of this beautiful, beautiful tool in a way that can transform lives, not just give you information. And if. If Today cracks something open for you, please tell me reviews aren't just numbers. They're fuel for this mission. And number three. Please, please, please, please share this. Share this with somebody. Share this with your audience, with your girlfriends, with your guy friends, whatever. Send this to someone you know has a legend trapped inside of them that might need a little edge, and you might be the one who lights the match by sharing this with them. I really am so pumped. I use this tool in every decision I make. I use this tool anytime I pause, which is all the time to open my mouth. It allows me to be a better listener, a better leader, a better mother, a better lover, a better friend. And when we are operating at that high standard, life gets a lot easier, even through really challenging things. You're not here to just be understood, though, right? I'm here to help make you unforgettable. And the Enneagram Edge is where you're gonna learn that. So welcome, and let's build your legacy. Right? I'm. I'm super excited. I would love to hear what you want to hear more of. You can always slide into my DMs at Tracy underscore O' Malley at Instagram. I'm on Facebook, same name, LinkedIn. All the things you can go to my website, traceeomally.com it's. It looks much better than it has in the past. If you haven't seen it, thank goodness I didn't love it before. But if you have seen my website before, you will appreciate the new format and how it looks. And it operates kind of like a navigation system, like an atlas. And, you know, it's funny. And I'll close with this because.
When I was a little girl growing up in the home that I grew up in, and it was rough and it was awesome, too. Like, it was both. It was all the things I'm a firm believer in and. Right. And when I was a little girl, I used to read the atlas that's how old I am. Before we had Jeep and Yahoo maps, that was the first thing that came out. When the Internet came out, we actually had to read maps. And the atlas I remembered it was like the spiral bound yellow cover. I think it's Rand McNally. And I would lay on the floor and open it up and I often wondered what the fuck am I doing reading Iowa or Idaho? But I was always fascinated with how do we get from here to there and how the fuck do I get out of here, right? If I need to leave, where do I go? And ironically, the way that I understand and teach the Enneagram is like an atlas. It's like a roadmap. And so the website kind of reflects that. I'm very excited to show you your mapping system so that that no matter what life throws at you, you know how to find your way out in a way that is beautiful and scenic and fun. And sometimes it feels like off roading and sometimes it feels like the fast pass. And sometimes it's just like, let's roll down the windows, let the music blare and enjoy the ride. And yeah, that's what we're going to do here at the Enneagram. Edge. I'm so honored that you take your time out and you listen. I'm so honored that you share and subs and thank you. Thank you for trusting me with your time, your heart, your soul, and the legend that's inside of you. Until next time. And that's a wrap.
On today's Dive into the Edge.
If this episode hit you in the.
Gut or lit a fire under your ass good, that means it's working. Here's the deal. Transformation is not a checkbox. It's a damn decision. And the Enneagram, it's your ultimate power tool when you actually know how to use it. If you loved today's episode, share it with somebody who's ready to stop playing small. Subscribe, leave a review, and if you're really feeling brave, shoot me a message and tell me what cracked open for you. Remember, your edge isn't something to be polished down.
