This is a podcast episode titled "EP434: The Edge of Forgiveness: How the Enneagram Unlocks What’s Holding You Back," released in August 2025. The content features Tracy O'Malley, an Enneagram expert and leadership coach, delivering a solo episode focused on the theme of forgiveness through the lens of the Enneagram personality system. Tracy shares personal stories, insights on how different Enneagram types experience and process hurt and betrayal, and offers practical guidance on using forgiveness as a transformative tool in personal and professional life. The episode is motivational and educational, aimed at helping listeners understand their emotional patterns and grow through self-awareness and compassion.
You ever have a moment where someone did something that should have broken you? Where every part of you wanted to slam the door, call it done, and never look back? I've been there. A few times. And for a long time, I thought my strength was in holding my ground. In keeping the wall up and making sure they knew they'd never get another shot at me. A few years ago, I had an experience that had me putting my money where my mouth is, testing that whole walk your talk thing. Someone I trusted fully let me down in a way that cut deep. And yes, I could have sat in the anger. I could have made them the villain and myself the victim. But here's the thing. There was another person I needed to forgive in that situation. Me. I had to forgive myself. For the ways I ignored my gut, for the signs I minimized, for the part I played in letting it get that far. And I didn't wait years to do it. I didn't slap a smile on and pretend it didn't hurt. I felt it, faced it, and forgave quickly. Not because it was easy, not because it didn't matter, but because I knew what holding on was going to cost me. And let's be clear. Forgiveness does not co sign their bullshit. It does not mean they get to stay in your life. It doesn't mean you drop every boundary you've worked so hard to build. Protection still matters. But protection is not the same as keeping walls sky high, numbing out, or throwing up a middle finger and saying fuck the haters while the wound fest. The truth is, not everyone gets triggered and cut by the same hurts. What feels like a small misunderstanding to one person can feel like betrayal of the highest order to another. And that's where the Enneagram comes in. Because underneath every offense is a root fear. One that's wired into you. When you know what yours is, you can see why the hurt landed the way it did. And you can choose to move through it. To forgiveness, to acceptance. And to the kind of transformation that actually unlocks your next level. Let's go. Hey. Hey. And welcome to the Enneagram Edge. I'm your host, Tracy o'. Malley, Enneagram expert leadership coach, recovering control freak, and your personal translator for the shit you keep repeating but don't totally understand yet. Now, if you're new here, buckle up. This is absolutely not another fluffy Enneagram podcast where we talk about how sweet it is to be an Enneagram, too and bake cookies for your friends. No, this is the real deal. This show is about Using the Enneagram as a tool for transformation. Not just information and definitely not some party trick. Because knowing your type is cute, but embodying your highest expression, that is where your edge is. Every week, I'm bringing you the truth behind the types and the hype. How to stop self sabotaging, lead like a damn legend, and actually understand the people in your life without wanting to scream into a pillow. Or if you're an enneagram8 like me, not throat punch someone. We'll talk about leadership, relationships, business, healing, high performance, and why couples therapy isn't working. But fully understanding your Enneagram blueprint might just save your marriage. I'll drop solo episodes behind the curtain, coaching, and the occasional rant when someone calls the Enneagram just a personality test. So if you're ready to stop playing small and start showing up with unshakable clarity, confidence, and compassion for yourself and others, this is your space. You've got an edge. Now let's use it. Hello. Hello, and welcome back to another episode of the Enneagram Edge. I'm your host, Tracy o'. Malley. And you know, I'm sitting in this beautiful little cuddle chair in my little sacred space in my home. It's not my office. I don't record my podcasts in my office because that's where I do all my tactical work. This room in my home is like my spiritual room. And. And it's really the only room in my house. It is like only mine. Nobody else comes in here except for the dogs. And I remember back to, you know, a few years ago when that betrayal hit me. And it was in this room that I did the opposite. And the contrary action of what I would typically do, you know, I'm an enneagram8. For those of you that don't know. And you know, for an eight, betrayal is like vengeance. Like, this is where, like, I'll go cut a. Or, you know, you want to around and find out can happen. And I remember in that moment, like I said, it's like where I put my money where my mouth is, and I walk my talk. And that's easier said than done when it's happening to you, right? Like, for those of you that, you know, coach people, help people, guide people, mentor people, parent people, it's really easy to speak it, but when you have to walk it, it's a whole nother ball game. And this was about three and a half years ago that this betrayal hit me. And I remember pausing in that moment where everything I wanted to do was shut down or, like, go rogue. And I did the opposite of what I typically would do, because I could get to the root of why it hurt so bad. It doesn't minimize the hurt. It doesn't, like I said, justify the hurt that happened. But I knew by holding onto the hate in my heart for that few minutes, what it would cost me. And I reached out to my bestie today and I prayed, whatever that means to you, like, I was like, God, please do not harden my heart. Please leave my heart wide open for the abundance of love, friendships, support that is available to me. I know I have an army around me that I have blocked out because of this relationship and the toxicity of it, my part included. And in talking and being vulnerable in real time and risking being, you know, rejected or betrayed again, what that unlocked for me was something pretty powerful because this betrayal was next to my. The divorce and the way my marriage came to a final close. This was right up there with it. And I had let this person see the deepest parts of me, probably more than anybody in my life at this. At this time. You know, since then, I've really evolved. And that's the beauty. And forgiveness is, you know, you know, what you can learn from it. And the forgiveness isn't necessarily for them, although I wish nothing but beautiful things for this person. I really do, Even though they're being dirty. And all the other things, even since then, I've. I've learned along the way, the forgiveness is for you and the lessons it can bring. You and I, you know, we never. You know, I. I love and hate the phrase like, this is happening for me. Well, like, when it's happening for me, it doesn't feel real good, right? So you can save your eye rolls. And in that moment, I knew that this was for me. I knew that this relationship was taking up so much time, so much energy. I was in my ego, in a lot of it. That's my part in it, right? Like, that was a very obvious lesson in all of this. But anything that we've become really good at, it came with some hard lessons, and this is no different. And forgiveness, I think, is one of the. The greatest flexes you can make. It's one of the greatest growth hacks out there, quite honestly, because we always have a part in it. Even when heinous shit happens, we have a part in our healing, right? And the betrayal that I faced was so deep, and it continued even after it was severed and has continued, like I said. And, you know, the stuff I've heard and you know, it, it hurts my heart that somebody would go this low when I was the most vulnerable, authentic part of who I was in this relationship. And since that time, you know, in that little moment of prayer like please don't harden my heart, I did have an army of beautiful friendships around me that weren't getting the time and nurturing that they deserved. And that opened up a whole slew of things. And then what came from that? Not only are they solid, solid Ride or die can hold the same kind of strength and space that I can, which I can hold a lot. So to have people in my life that can do that is amazing. And also professionally and abundantly and the types of people I have in my life today not only are great friends, but they're wise in business, they're wise in all sorts of things. And there's this beautiful even energy and value exchange within these relationships, personally and professionally. And it still hurts. And you know, it's been three and a half years since that betrayal happened and continued. And I still think of this person often. And you know, every Saturday I go to my hot yoga class with my favorite. She's. Oh my God, she's such a healer. She's like this 61 year old woman who's just like a goddess. And before we start our practice, you know, she's always saying like know, send energy out into the world or maybe somebody specific that you feel needs it. And every single time over the last three and a half years I have sent it directly to this person. And that is the power of forgiveness. And you know, I may never see what comes of that. I don't really care to see it. It doesn't matter anymore. I pray for that person in all the most beautiful, non patronizing ways. I really, really do. Because you know, people that are hurting and have been hurt, hurt and I hope that that person is on their way to healing and love and abundance in a way that doesn't show up in a bank account. Right. So I wanted to talk about forgiveness today because I think it's a really important piece professionally and personally that is holding a lot of us back. And you know, even this last weekend I was in Carlsbad with my, my lover and my honey and we had a moment. We almost never fight because our communication is so strong. It never gets to an argument or a fight ever because we just talk about everything in real time. But there was a moment that was so activating for me and I was so angry and I used what I'm going to share with you in this episode, how you can get to forgiveness quickly without bypassing or minimizing your hurt, your feelings, your process. But it doesn't have to linger long. It doesn't have to do more damage than is necessary. And I know, like anytime I have held onto hate or anger or sadness or any of the things that I mean, all these emotions are very important. It's how we use them and how we move through them that is the game changer. And I know in a lot of the work I do with the people that I do, whether it's couples, individuals, groups, teams, at the root of what's holding us back, what the bottleneck is, is like this unresolved anger, resentment, hurt, and a lack of forgiveness. So I thought today's episode would be really good for you to hear because forgiveness isn't fluffy, let me tell you. It's strategic and it's a skill set. It's not easy, like I said, especially when you're in it. And for leaders and high achievers, unforgiveness leaks into your decision making, your leadership presence, how you parent, how you show up with your team, how you show up with your clients, how you show up with your partner. It's an invisible tax on your energy and your influence. Okay, so here are three traps that high level, high achieving people fall into with unforgiveness control mode. This one's my favorite one. Using this anger as armor. It's like this. The haters can't touch this, like all the things, but inside it's, there's that little person in you, little man, little girl, that's saying, but that really hurt, you know, And a lot of times anger is the bodyguard to the sadness. Number two is hyper productivity. I also like this one. Outworking the pain instead of addressing it, bypassing it, like shiny object chasing, like, shove it down, forget about it, don't look back, you know, and I, I appreciate when people say don't look back. You're not going there. But you have to be able to connect the dots, right? We don't look back to stay stuck in it. We look back to kind of understand and move differently. And number three is emotional shutdown. I also like this one, you know, so high, high achieving and high, high level people will probably use a trifecta of these three. So emotional shutdown, numbing, so you don't have to feel the sting. So your enneagram type reveals the root fear that betrayal or hurt bumps up against. And once you name it, know it, and understand it, you can Release that charge faster. And like I said over the weekend, I had a moment. You know, as an enneagram 8, feeling put in a vulnerable situation or being betrayed or violated is like the core fear of an enneagram 8. And I wasn't betrayed or violated, but I did feel like I was put in a vulnerable situation that I didn't have control over. And the anger in me was brewing, and the situation wasn't calling for a calm conversation in the moment until about 20 minutes later. And I knew what was at the root of it. And because I knew this, I didn't have to turn this whole situation in. And I even had a flashback like, holy shit, this looks really different 15 years ago. A, I was drinking back then, and B, I didn't have the map. You know, I just knew what I was reacting to, not what was at the root of it. So we're going to go through all nine types, and this might help you. You really understand when you feel that and you. You feel the anger and the hurt and all the things when you know what's at the root of it, you can pull it up by that and get to it faster so that you can move through transformation and acceptance faster, because that's part of grief. Like, life's gonna life you, and you can't avoid it. And if you're raising your hand saying, I want to grow and be the best version of myself and I want to make impact, you can't avoid it. I'm here to tell you it's how you manage it and leverage it that will make all the difference. So for the Enneagram one, the reformer, right, the root fear for the Enneagram one is being wrong or corrupt or defective. So a lot of times, the forgiveness block for you is that you hold yourselves and others to impossible standards, and betrayal feels like a moral failure. I've experienced this with an Enneagram one, where they, to this day, six years later, won't forgive me. Because if they said they were wrong, moral failure, total failure. And that's a huge thing for an Enneagram One. So how do you unlock this as an Enneagram One is accepting that imperfection is human and not a character flaw. Now, that's a lot easier than just knowing this. You have to practice this. And this is where, like, understanding the full scope and the compass, that is the Enneagram, like, the Enneagram is the map, but you have to use the compass to find your way through it. This is where the wings, the lines, the subtype, your Tri type comes into play. We'll get to that. Okay. For the enneagram 2, the helper, the root fear that gets touched for you guys is feeling unwanted or unworthy of love or unappreciated, right? And so the forgiveness block, sometimes for an Enneagram too, is that hurt feels like rejection of your very being. Like, am I even worthy? You know, And I, you know, I'm raising an Enneagram too. So I've seen this a lot. How this gets unlocked and how you unlock that forgiveness for an Enneagram, too, is to recognize that your worth is not dependent on being needed, appreciated, even loved by another human. You're loved because you're here. It's been cool to watch my enneagram2 son, who's 27 now, really honor this. You know, it's hard for Enneagram Twos to speak up and hold a boundary and to speak their truth, knowing that they risk being rejected and not loved and not appreciated. But when a 2 can move through that, like, you do your best helping, by the way. Way. For the Enneagram Threes, the root fear that gets touched is being worthless, feeling worthless, or failing in other people's eyes, right? So this is why the achievers, like, they're probably most prone to over producing when the hurt hits. Like, I don't want to feel this. Let's set another goal. Let's set another goal. But meanwhile, they're being buried by this pain. And. And where the block comes for the enneagram3 is that this hurt often threatens your identity and public image. And so then you become this puppet and performer, and you guys are really good at it, and you're highly admired for it. So it almost feeds that unhealthy pattern for you, but it catches up to you either in relationship burnout, body burnout, total shutdown. And that is way worse than facing this when it's happening. So how do you unlock this as an enneagram 3? You detach your self worth from performance and perception. And like I said, all of this, this unlocking is a sentence. There's a method and a practice and muscles you have to build in order for this to become easily, to move through it like I did in 20 minutes with both scenarios I just kind of faced in the recent years. Like I said, I'll get to that. The Enneagram 4, the individualist, the root fear that gets touched is having no identity or personal significance or why the fuck am I even here? And it can get really like, for of all the types I would say for Enneagram Fours, this can go really deep and dark. And the forgiveness block is that pain becomes part of your identity, and letting go feels like losing a piece of yourself. Like, the gift of the enneagram 4 is the full scope of the human emotions, and pain is one of them. And you guys can go deep and dark. That's your gift and also the Kryptonite in your life. So how does an Enneagram 4 unlock this? See that? Releasing hurt does not erase your depth. I'm in a relationship with an Enneagram for. And even through that little moment we had over the weekend, we sat and talked about it last night, and it was so beautiful. You know, I needed the space to kind of process it. You know, I didn't kind of hold a grudge or give silent treatments between when the moment happened and last night when we had this beautiful, deep conversation. But because I even know his fear, right, I could touch on that and, like, listen, this is, you know, how I feel about it. And. And even where he was feeling hurt, that had nothing to do with our situation. It doesn't erase, like, his depth and his magic. It's beautiful. It's so cool, you guys, when you understand this, this is so key. All right? Enneagram Fives, the investigators, the root fear that gets touched as being incompetent or incapable, right? Uncertain. So the forgiveness block for Enneagram Fives is that betrayal shakes your trust in your ability to see things coming. You know, Enneagram Fives are very, like, data driven. They can see things that others don't. They have wisdom around things that others do not. And, you know, Fives are most prone, I would say, and most likely to be introverted. You know, a lot of their certainty comes from hoarding their information and their resources. And, you know, as an enneagram 8, it's a stressor number for me. It's my stretch, right? And I can go into the five cave. I love the five cave sometimes, and Fives love the five cave because it's where they feel safe, right? But nothing gets resolved in that isolation. So how does a 5 unlock it? Accepting that vulnerability is strength and not a liability. And I work with a lot of Fives, and I've had a recent conversation with one of my favorite Enneagram Fives around this and helping them talk through some stuff where they wanted to kind of just bypass it. And this person took that advice and felt confident. I can even hear over the phone when we were talking, like, the shoulders going back The. The empowerment that they felt and the impact that they will make moving forward because of that courage for the Enneagram Six is the Loyalists. You guys probably feel this in a way that most don't, because your root fear is being without support or guidance. I think Twos and Sixes, really, especially this hits a little differently for you guys than. Than other people. And I'm really gentle with the Twos and Sixes around this because it is so. It feels so personal for you even when it isn't. So the forgiveness block for the Enneagram Sixes is broken. Trust feels like their foundation is gone. And, you know, back to my opening story, that relationship was with an enneagram6. So even though that person was doing me dirty all day long, like, I understood what was at the RO of this person doesn't make it okay. It doesn't co sign the. Or any of it, but it helps me have compassion and understanding, even with protection and strong boundaries, to probably never see this person again. But I realized for them, it felt like that, right? And how that person could unlock this is anchoring them in self trust and resilience over external certainty. So the external certainty was like shit talking, me doing me dirty. Like, that made them feel like they could rope in some support through gossip, through shit talking. And that. That's just going to perpetuate it. It's going to perpetuate things that don't serve you. So if you're a Six, like, I know this is really, really hard because you're always scanning for certainty and you're seeking it out and you don't always trust it, but you can have that self trust. You can. And when a Six does this, like, they're the master troubleshooters of the Enneagram, So it's beautiful to watch. All right, Enneagram sevens. I am also raising one of these. And the root fear for an enneagram 7 is being trapped, limited, without choices and options, trapped in pain. So the forgiveness block for them, for Sevens, is that you avoid dealing with the hurt entirely, which delays true release. And a lot of times I can, you know, reframe. The Sevens are the masters of the reframe and the positive spin on things because you want to avoid the pain. And even Sevens will try to do this with other, other people. And I've. I have many of my close friends that are Sevens, and I can see the reframe. I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Let's. Let's slow down. Or they'll try to reframe it for their partners or their people. I'm like, you want to reframe this because you're uncomfortable with this, but you have to not rob them of process. And also, you can't rob yourself of this process and raising an enneagram 7. My daughter's 28 now, and she has been faced with some of this pain that she hasn't addressed for a long, long time. And I told her, like, there's going to come a time where you're going to. You're going to have to face this. And I realized, like, maybe not now, but when. When it comes and when you're ready, I've got you. And it's been beautiful to watch her honor the hurt. Move through it, accept it, speak up. It's temporary, right? And for Sevens, because your fear is, you know, feeling, like, freedom, choices and options, and being trapped is happening. Sometimes dealing with feeling trapped for a moment will give you long game freedom, choices and options. So how do you unlock this? By facing it fully. It creates the freedom and not more restriction. And it's true. I see it all the time. Like I said, a lot of my besties, also my daughter, watching them do this is awesome because they see it. And the more you practice it, you know, like, this pain sucks right now. I feel trapped right now. And also, like, let's face this. So the whole world is wide open for you. And it. And it is. It's not bullshit, I promise. For my fellow Enneagram Eights, the root fear, being touched is being controlled, betrayed, violated, put in a vulnerable situation, Right? And the forgiveness block for Eights like me is that hurt feels like a direct threat to our autonomy, our independence, our control. Like, Eights don't need to be in control of everything, but we won't be controlled. And so when we get betrayed or hurt like I did, or even in that situation that happened over the weekend, like, I felt like I was being controlled. That wasn't the case, but it felt like that. And that's why I needed some space, because I was going to, like, armor up, flex, you know, do all the things that would actually make this worse. And so how an 8 unlocks this is seeing that forgiveness is actually reclaiming power and not surrendering it. And it's true. It's true in the situation three and a half years ago, even though, like, that person is not a participant in my forgiveness, I reclaimed so much power in that and actually gained more compassion, which actually makes me a better challenger and a better leader, a better parent, a Better partner, a better friend. All the things eights. I know. It's a lot easier said than done. It feels like weakness in your body. I promise you, that's where the strength is. And the nines, the adaptive peacemaker. The root fear for you guys is loss of connection and conflict escalation, right? You guys, your autonomy is based on peace and harmony within yourself and in your environment. And so a lot of times, you guys do this a lot. Sweep it under the rug. Sweep it under the rug. It's not that big. You convince yourself that it's not that big a deal. It doesn't matter. What good would it do to speak up, right? And that's where resentment really piles up, because your underlying emotion is anger. So it's going to catch all this stuff. You guys is going to catch up to you somehow in a way that's not convenient, fun, cheap, or without a lot of pain. So the more we can face this stuff and understand what's at the root of it, the easier this gets. It doesn't mean it doesn't hurt, doesn't mean it doesn't feel personal, but we can move through it and use this for something beautiful. For the nines, the block is that you minimize the hurt, like I said, to keep the peace, but the resentment simmers underneath. And eventually that's gonna blow, right? It's gonna blow. That's what happened in the situation over the weekend. Even though he's not a nine and I'm not a nine, what he was responding to in real time had nothing to do with the anger in present time. He had been bearing some hurt, and I knew. I knew the resentment that was coming out or the anger that was coming out from him had nothing to do with the situation that I was feeling triggered by. And that was part of our beautiful conversation last night, was like, he's like. That wasn't even, like, me. I'm like, yeah, but you have been going through so much, and as much as you do talk about it, I know there's still more there, right? So for my enneagram, nines, bearing it will only cause it to spew out like lava onto things that you love the most. So how you unlock this as a 9 is knowing that true peace comes from addressing the hurt, not avoiding it. And honestly, conflict. I love conflict, and nines hate it. But conflict is one of the greatest catalysts for growth, change, peace, and harmony. So the. The more that you can reconcile your relationship with it, the easier it will be to not only truly forgive, but move through it and use it for something good. So how do we do this? Right, this is the process. Gotta feel, heal, grow, and move through. Right? So again, knowing your accurate enneagram type will help. And if you don't, go get my blueprint now. Yes, there's a lot of free and even lower priced paid online tests, but they're not accurate. So this whole map doesn't work if you don't have the right coordinates. So go get your blueprint right now@traceyomalley.com promise you it's worth it. This all will help you flow through the Atlas of the Enneagram a lot easier. So name the root fear that was triggered. If you know your enneagram type, boom, you can get to it really quick. Instead of like, it was about this, it was about this. Like, that's throwing shit up at the wall, hoping something sticks and you're never really getting to what it really is. So naming the root and understanding what it is and then letting yourself feel that. Right? Heal. Allow the emotions without judgment. I was frustrated three and a half years ago in this weekend. And for a moment I was like, God, why am I, like, upset? It's like, no, I have a right to be upset. It's okay that I'm upse. My anger is healthy. I'm going to use it for good. I'm not going to spew it all over. I'm going to take some time. Right? Allowing your emotions without judgment. 3 Grow. Reframe the experience with insight. Not a toxic reframe, not a toxic positivity. But it's like, okay, what have I learned about myself from this? Three and a half years ago, this weekend, Fucking beautiful. Let me tell you and move through choosing forgiveness, not to excuse, but to expand. Three and a half years ago, I chose forgiveness and also protecting myself from that person for the rest of my life, right? Like, if that person came to me and apologized, we could have a different conversation. But I don't see that happening now. The. The thing over the weekend, we had a beautiful conversation and he's still the love of my life. My. My. My person, all the things. And we have grown as a result of it. So we. I chose forgiveness. I didn't excuse the behavior. He owned it. He was loving. And we both expanded. That is how we do this, right? So it's not easy, but it takes practice, right? It's just like anything we're good at. Like, we have to practice it. We have to use the, the muscles. And that's where the entire framework of The Enneagram comes into play. It's also why knowing your correct Enneagram type makes this a lot freaking easier. So I know you've been listening today and realizing how much your own root fear maybe shapes the way you experience hurt, betrayal, and even your ability to forgive. And I know you know it's probably a big part of the bottleneck holding you back in any area of your life. And this is the work I do and teach in Level 1 of the Enneagram Edge Foundations program. And like, my whole certification process. This is like the Prereq, right? And this is for anyone. Even if you never want to use the Enneagram with anyone else, you understanding the foundations the way I teach it will fucking change your life, I promise you. And level one is where you learn the Enneagram as the skilled map, not just a personality label. You uncover the exact wiring that's running your patterns, and how to navigate it with precision in real life situations like leadership, relationships, and yes, even forgiveness. So if you want to stop circling that same mountain and start moving forward with the clarity, power, and presence that I know is inside of you, please join me in the Enneagram Edge Foundations. The first cohort starts September 3rd. It is a four week program, live. It's not like me on a video. It is me live, coaching, teaching. I'm keeping it very, very small, especially for this first one. So getting into the first group, you will pretty much be working one on one with me for the most part. There's not going to be many people because I want it that way. It will change the game. So if you haven't gotten your blueprint and you want to be part of this, do that first and then sign up for that. The link is in the show notes. And I would be honored. And I would love to walk you through this work personally. It has radically transformed every area of my life the last 13 years. And now I've helped thousands and thousands of people use this beautiful map and atlas to transform their life, love, leadership, and legacy. You know, when I walked away from that moment three and a half years ago, like I said, the circumstances hadn't changed. That person was still who they were. The loss was still real. But I wasn't the same after that. Something in me totally shifted and the grip I had on the anger was gone. The need to replay that scene, rewrite the ending, prove my point. It all went quiet, which was a fucking miracle, let me tell you. And in that quiet, there was space and space to see the lesson. Space to take the next step without the weight of the last one.
