In this introductory video, Vivek George, a founder of the Sustainable Co-op Store, shares his personal connection to nature and his concern over plastic pollution observed in natural settings. He highlights the long-lasting environmental impact of plastic waste and argues that while individual habit changes are valuable, the larger responsibility lies with companies to reduce plastic packaging and adopt sustainable production. Vivek outlines his vision for a worker-owned cooperative that sells products with minimal plastic and sustainably sourced materials, emphasizing that such a store can make a significant positive impact on the environment. He invites the community to a general meeting on January 26th to collaborate on building the cooperative, stressing teamwork, collective ownership, and hopeful optimism that the problem can be solved through thoughtful action.

Hey folks, my name is Vivek George, one of the founders of the Sustainable Co-op Store. Like many of you, I love the environment. I love nature. I love animals. I grew up actually in a small town filled with nature all around me, and while as a kid I didn't fully appreciate it, now living in Brooklyn, New York, the contrast is quite apparent, and I definitely miss nature when I'm not around it often. That said, I'm always sad when I go to a national park, a beach, or some other piece of nature, and I find plastic lying around or garbage lying around, or seeing an animal dead because they swallowed plastic. Or when I think about plastic for utensils or plastic bags that we get from grocery stores, and I think to myself, "Wait, this thing is gonna last long beyond me." This is gonna last long beyond my friends' kids and their kids and even their kids, perhaps for hundreds, maybe a thousand years. That said, I get it. I mean, what can we really do about it? We have to live our lives and enjoy, right? We have busy lives, we have families, we have kids, we have work. That's why for me, it isn't about each of us changing our habits a ton. I mean, sure, we can all be a little bit more mindful about the stuff that we buy and how we get rid of those things. But for me, it's more about the companies that are making these products and the companies that are selling them. Those companies, I believe, need to be more thoughtful about not using so much plastic packaging when making the products and being as sustainable as possible with the products they are making. That way, all of us can shop the way that we like and not have to worry about garbage in the end. So for me, that's why I'm creating the Sustainable Co-op Store. I believe if we can create a store that sells products with as little plastic packaging as possible and creates the most sustainably created products possible, we can have a major impact positively on the environment and on nature. And this to me doesn't seem impossible. Maybe hard, but definitely not impossible. I 100% believe we can accomplish this. It just requires a little bit of teamwork. So that's why I'm calling the first general meeting for the Sustainable Co-op Store, so that together we can assemble a team and create this future. And to be clear, this isn't my project, this is our project. Yes, I'm the catalyst for this event and I'm providing the initial vision for the project, but a worker-owned cooperative is owned and controlled by the workers. The team. So if you're hopeful like I am, or just want to do your part to create this future, please come out on January 26th to participate in the meeting, to share your knowledge, or simply to observe and listen. If we work together, this problem can be easily solved. We just need to focus, take thoughtful action, and come together as a team. So let's build a sustainable store together. And build a more sustainable world. Thank you, and I'll see you on Jan 26th. Take care.
