29 Jan 2026 · 3 min
Informal pre-race interview (Ben and Jessica Greenfield) recorded in Nagoya, Japan before Ironman 70.3 Japan (2013-06-09). Topics covered include Ben's pre-race feelings and tapering (carb-loading, rested legs), race equipment (new wheels), course characteristics (four-loop, very flat, draft-prone), logistics (race held at an airport with shuttle buses), and lighthearted goals/banter.

Hey, this is Jessica Greenfield. We're in Nagoya, Japan. Nagoya, did I say that correctly? I think so. Ben's sitting next to me and then. How are you feeling about the race, babe?
Well, we're on a stinky bus and we're on our way to the swim start and right now I feel like I'm sitting on a stinky bus. Hard to visualize the race while you're sitting.
That doesn't give us a whole lot about the race.
No, it's like how your legs feeling. I was telling you when we woke up this morning. It's like, you know when you're so used to like beating yourself up and like exercising every day and then you taper for one of these races and we've basically been like sitting around eating a lot of rice, basically eating for the past three days. And, you know, in the land of carbs and yeah, I feel very, very, very full of energy right now. I'm just like, like hyperactiveness.
So is there anything you're gonna try new this race or.
I love to try lots of new things when I'm racing. That's what I recommend to everybody to do. Try as many new things as possible.
That can really bite you in the butt, I'm pretty sure.
No, I just. Well, you saw me. I just got done taking my anti aging formula.
You look more youthful.
It's that oxaloacetate stuff that turns lactic acid into glucose. So there you go. That's not new, though. I used that a couple of times before. No. Well, I've got a new set of wheels I'm gonna use.
That'll be kind of fun. It's supposed to be pretty f. Yeah. Does that make it a little scary?
I don't even have to pedal.
You don't even have to pedal. Motorized.
May not have to pedal anyways because this is a four loop course. It's going to be a draft.
It's going to be completely flat is what I hear.
It's going to be a flat draft fest. This is probably one of the best chances of my life to be four hours and a half. So.
Right on.
Interesting. So, yeah.
So what's your goal? Any goals?
My goal is to lay down some serious smack.
Where in the whole race or what?
To walk softly but carry a big stick, as they say. I think something like that. I don't know.
Okay.
No, to have a good time. Oh, look, there's the finish line. We're just riding the bus by the finish line now. See, that's where the finish line is.
They bus everybody in to start. So it takes a long time in the morning to get there.
Lots of buses, lots of shuttles, lots of like, just like planes, trains and automobiles in this race?
Yes. Well, it's held at an airport. Is that not bizarre? I've never even heard of a race.
We've basically been living our lives at the airport. But it's a cool airport.
It is a cool airport, but I think I find it really strange.
Yeah, it's kind of. It's. It's just weird. It's a weird place to have a race based out of.
Okay. Anything else you'd like to say before we tune out here?
There's a Costco. I actually haven't seen a Costco in Japan before.
Yeah, there it is. Okay.
Anything else? No, just. No, that's. That's.
Don't crash. Come back alive.
I think that was probably about the worst radio ever on the face of the planet that we just put out. But what do you expect when you're.
On a. I've never done this before.
Triathletes and just has never done this before. Our pre race interviews will only get better. Don't judge. All right?
Okay.
Okay.
