In this episode of the RT podcast, hosts Rhett and Lance interview RT founders Terry and Sharon Hargrave. The conversation centers on a model of emotional dysregulation that progresses from a reactive state to polarization, then to entitled extremism, and finally to violent or destructive outcomes. The Hargraves explain how this model maps onto the "pain cycle"—identity and safety threats trigger dysregulation, leading to automatic reactions (blame, shame, control, escape) and, if unaddressed, to increasingly rigid and hostile positions. They introduce a therapeutic framework called Restoration Therapy, which uses four concrete steps for clinicians and clients: (1) identify the feeling, (2) notice the habitual response, (3) articulate the truth about identity and safety, and (4) mobilize a regulated, constructive action. Practical strategies for dealing with clients who are stuck in the cycle include slowing rants, asking about underlying pain, empowering safety‑building actions, creating concrete contingency plans, and fostering community connection. The hosts discuss the amplifying role of social media, the need for churches and communities to allow respectful political dialogue, and how theological resources (fruits of the Spirit, prayer, biblical examples of Jesus’ righteous anger) can support regulation. Personal anecdotes illustrate how storytelling and empathy break down polarized narratives. The episode ends with encouragement for therapists to model self‑regulation, to focus on their immediate circles, and to use resources such as David Brooks, Brother Lawrence, and Henry Nouwen.
