Daniel and Tom break down Tottenham's recent form and tactical setup, weighing player performances and what separates them from rivals. They dig into match details and broader Premier League movements.
Really stubborn. Going all the way again here. And Leonard's kicked him out. Oh, this is incredible. This is quite incredible. Truly a glory, glory day for Tottenham Hotsmart.
Hello and welcome to Echoes of Glory. I'm asd.
And I'm Jack.
Trying to be a little bit less monotone, but it's very difficult. I just can't do it.
What a weekend of football. Come on, you Spurs.
But the women. I've just watched some of the women. Have you seen the second goal from the women?
Unbelievable. Unbelievable. But what a win at West Ham. Like, come on, like what we said last week. Like, what an opportunity early in the season. New manager. Let's go there and like, let's just stamp them. Do you know what I mean? Like, let's just put a real authoritative performance gun win. We did exactly that. It was really, really controlled, mature. Do you know what I mean? It just felt like, we've got this, we've got this. We're going to win this game. I'll take a little bit time to get the first goal. We're in control of this. It was fantastic. I've felt like we haven't gone and done that, do you know what I mean, in a. In a game that we should win away from home for ages, you know, I was absolutely. I loved every single bit of the performance. It was brilliant to watch.
It was. It was brilliant. It was peaceful. We haven't had a peaceful gaming for so long, especially against them, especially not there. I mean, they are a wounded animal. Right, he's gonna go soon. Right? He's got to go soon. And you never know what's going to happen. Like, it's one of those ones where when you be in free now, go. Of course you would. They're awful. They've conceded 11 games, so 11 goals so far. But then you also go, that's exactly when they would beat us. Doctor, Tottenham is here.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, 100.
It was great because we talked when. When we saw the lineup, we went, not sure about this. Tell up front. Tell's not. He's not playing brilliantly right now. I'm not sure if he's going to be that player for us, but what on here and that. You could tell they were sort of trying to find their feet. And then the second half came and we. It was a very controlled performance. It must have been so depressing to be a West End player in that situation and a fan. You can see how many of them were walking out.
I. I was just so impressed watching it. And again, it's just another example of a different type of performance as well, wasn't it? We haven't. We probably haven't been. We haven't had an opportunity really to be that controlled with the ball yet and to actually just. You know, what I loved was we didn't try and score from every attack and it was very much. It's not. Their court will go back and we just worked it and I thought, I thought the central midfielders were just the absolute. It's called the engine room for a reason. Right. I just thought the three of them were amazing. Like Sar just. He looks a completely different player, doesn't he? Like, it's fantastic to see.
He's 23. He is nowhere near peaking. We are three or four years away. What a player he is. Pollinia is what a professional that man is. It's mad, isn't it? Good how you go players are, you know, they take a year to bed in, some of them take six months to bed in. He's just come in and just doing a job and you feel like he could do a job like that for any team. Yeah, but Bergval is quickly becoming my favorite player. I. I love that boy.
We said it though, didn't we? Look, when the E deal didn't happen we said actually like we. We need a way for Berg Val to just play again this year because we saw how good he could be last year. That was a really mature performance from him. But like I just looked at the team and I was with you. When I saw T up top I was like, well, I'm not sure about that but that was a team that had absolutely incredible running power and you could see that. Like they couldn't live with it. West Ham at all. Especially in the midfield area. We had Berg, Ralph, Sar Tell dropping in, Javi Simons off one side like. And they were all sort of made like a box. Midfield, sir. Check and wall press. We just ran through them. We just absolutely just ran through them. And it was really smart management to be like again looking at and going where is. Where are our opponents weak here? They've not got much physicality in the middle of the pitch. Let's get legs in there and let's exploit it. And so that. That was really great for me to say. And the set pieces. I feel like we need to talk about set pieces.
19, like he is still a child.
19. And Sara 23.
How old?
Chavy Siemens. He's his early 20s, isn't he?
Yeah.
Tells. Tells what? 19, 20.
Yeah. Kudos is mid 20s, like we've, we've.
Even like is like 24 spent like it's such a young side. But that's why I think the addition of Paulin is fantastic. He's been there, done it, you know, like he knows what he's doing. He's got certain limitations with the ball but we don't need him to do anything beyond what he's doing. We don't need him to dictate, plan or like in a nicest way. That's what we've got Benton core for to play that type of role. We just need him to do exactly what he did and help those younger players out. So it's super exciting. But the set pieces for me, like I, I can't remember the last time I've seen a team change so drastically on a point of their game so quickly. And that is, it's alarming in it from what we were doing. We couldn't attack set pieces and we certainly couldn't defend them. And now every time we get a fell or a corner, I think we're going to score.
I just, just makes me angrier. What we had to deal with last year. I know there's some people who still love him. I just, he. It makes me angry how quickly you're able to change this. It's not the addition of kudos and Xavi Simons or Simmons that has made this happen. It. This is it. We were talking about the basics of management for 18 months and now you put them in. Actually we've got a team and we've got a team that's performing. We've got three clean sheets, we got six clean sheets last season. We're halfway to a clean sheet tally in four games. Seems like I. Bergval, I. I just, I just want to watch him play football. I was watching them YouTube shorts the other day and according to YouTube work chat now but YouTube, according to YouTube they've changed the way shorts are measured now. So they view. They see a view as. As soon as a short loads and so their stats are now that on average some. Every single person in the world watches a short 25 times. Which is ridiculous, right?
What's the point? It's just stupid.
But separately I watched a short and it was a. It was who. What was the lower league team that we played last season?
Tamworth.
Tamworth. It was a. A Tamworth midfielder on a podcast and he was just, he was singing Bergval's praise. He was saying like he's just another level. The kid was 18 at the time. He just glides across the pitch. And you saw that yesterday. If you start watching him, his. It's almost, you know, when you start running properly or you. When you start running and you're running regularly, like three or four, four or five times a week. When you start, you're thinking about your feet, you're thinking about your breath, you're thinking about stuff. After two weeks of doing it properly. You. You. Your body's a machine and you're just running. You can see that's the way he plays football. Like his brain can watch the game. It's all like. They talk about Messi, how he can see the game five or six seconds ahead. Bergwell. I'm not saying Bergwell's like Messi, but you can see that. That process where what's happen in front of him, he's already processed and he's moving beyond. I think he's a wonderful footballer. That header was Kanesque. We. We haven't seen headers like that. The. The header he scored against Arsenal, which is never in his like top 10 goals. When his first two goals in the North London Derby, which I was there for, which is to the cr. That header was one of the goals I went craziest for in my life. That was similar. Like he's leaning backwards and somehow this one is like. It's a mixture of that with a for Tongan or Diable to Dele Alli where it comes from deep. What a pass by Romero, by the way. And he did that multiple times. He did a couple of assignments as well. Straight over the top. So he's coming over his shoulder, he's leaning back and he's looping a header over the goalkeeper. One of the goal goals. Better for me. I enjoying that more than richarlison's goal. It's just I could watch it for days and days and days.
It reminded me. Do you remember the brilliant diving header lob that Robin van Perse scored for the Netherlands at the World Cup? Do you remember that? That's. That's what it reminded me of. But the pass from Romero, I think I put on our group chat. I was like, that was all deverald to Delhi. Like, how many times did we say it's like. Like is that back then. Do you know what I mean? Is that big diagonal ball back? I thought Romero. Look, I've. I said at the start of the season I was going to try and look on the positives of Romero a bit more and then. But he saw. He sorted out just the. The principles of Defending him. And Van De Ven looks so solid at the moment.
Like they're not being asked to do four jobs. They're not being asked to defend in front of them and behind them. They're not being asked to sprint back and. And catch people up. He's been asked to be a central defender. Yeah.
And he's got fullbacks, that one of them stays with them. It's just we said it, didn't we, that Frank will simplify the defender's game and ask them to do less. And you're seeing it, you know, I mean, and it's like. I think it's a bit of a strange side spurs this year because I think we look balanced and I think we look like we can score goals, but I don't. I don't know if we necessarily look like a team that's going to create a lot of chances, if that makes sense. Like I can score, see a score in two or three in a game, but maybe only really creating two or three chances. But I just think the types of goals at the minute that looks like. It looks like we can score are very different. You know, if you just look at all the goals we have scored this season, they're all completely different. Whereas I feel like last year it was very much. We just had that back post tapping and that was sort of the spurs goal. Whereas at the minute, we can score from set pieces, we can score from a long ball, we can score from intricate play, you know, around the opponent's box. And I like the variety. I think Javi Simons looks like he. There's a good player in there with some little bits of play that he did. And you just think, yeah, like he sees a picture. Well, he moves the ball quickly. Like his touch was great. And I actually quite like that they, that he started him sort of on that left wing and just give him a little bit of time to bed in a little bit. I feel like if you just chuck him in in the middle of the pitch, and I know he can play both, he does predominantly play on that left side, but I feel like we probably sort of see him playing a bit more centrally. I just think that the speed of it at the moment, he might get shot out a little bit. So I think he's really smart that he plays out there. And some of the positions he was taking up was great. Just making that extra man in the middle and it was just. I was just so pleased that we just went away and just put in that it was just professional. Jimmy just felt like, we've got a manager who knows what we're doing. Players know what they've got to do. This is the game plan. If you do this, we will win. And then they just went and executed it and it was. It was just. It was great. I was so, so happy. I just feel like that was such a big moment for us that we probably all certainly had that bit in the back of my mind where I was like, we're gonna go here and get done one nil. And it's just going to be a classic spurs thing where, you know, you've got an opportunity and you don't take it. I was just so, so, so happy with just everything that we did. I just feel really optimistic for the season. I just feel like this manager is worth points.
You know what I mean?
Like, there'll be points in the season where, like, we turn a game around and it's because we've got someone that knows what he's doing.
For me, exactly what you're saying, what he did really well was he stopped it being a London derby. He just changed into a game of football where the, the bigger team beat the worst team. And that's. That's what he did. It. Forget West Ham, forget the spurs thing, because this could have been a. Like, we finished blowing last season. Let's. Let's really not forget that. This could have been a game of 17 versus whatever they finished 15th or 14th last year. It really wasn't. This is a team that's now going to finish fourth, fifth, whatever it's going to be against a team that's going to be fighting relegation. And it, it really, really looked like that.
It's so. It's so good. And it makes me as well, like just going into what's a big sort of 10 days now, Villarreal on Tuesday, tough game at Brighton, and then Doncaster in the League cup. Like, you know, we need to be on it. Do you know what I mean? Like, and choose Tuesday is massive. Firstly, just being back in the Champions League. I can't wait to get, get over there Tuesday night under the lights, that music back, like, here we go. Do you know what I mean? Back in the big time. That's going to be amazing.
I remember being with Don the first time the Champions League music was heard at spurs for the young boys game and just feeling so proud and just feels like that's a stadium built for this and it just feels that's where we belong. What I was going to say is, I'm looking at. I've got it in front of me. I. You said it was balanced. I still don't think Tell is a striker and there is a strike. There's something not right there. Not saying it's not balanced because it is balanced and we did create enough teams and enough chances for us to win, I think. But if you imagine we've got Bentica, Richarlison, Solanki, Kuliski and Madison to come in. What that.
And Carlo Muani as well and Moani.
Yeah, yeah. What that. That enables you so many tactical changes, so much flexibility that I don't think it's a difficult choice for him to go. I don't think he's going to have an 11. I think he's going to be reactive based on what's needed. I think John, we'll see Johnson start. I don't think Johnson is a starter, but I think we'll see him start against teams where we may play more on the break. A lot of teams are going to see us now and go, we're not going to be all out and you can't play on the break.
It's like Tuesday night, isn't it, against Valerie might go, you know what I'm gonna sling in Johnson, Richarlison and.
Exactly.
And how we. And our style is going to be completely different to what. What you've just seen. And I just think that you've got a lot of players as well that can play multiple positions and multiple roles as well, which is, you know, a massive, massive plus. So I completely agree with you.
And.
But the biggest thing with all of that is you've got a manager that will change it. Do you know what I mean? And it's. It like that's only a weapon, having. Having all those different options. Only a weapon. If your manager's gonna go, this game needs this.
Exactly. He stepped up well, isn't he? He doesn't look out of his depth. He just. And all the players have done exactly the same job. They just. They've just done what they need to do. Kudos. I mean, emotional game for Kudos, who's just gone. He played really well. They're all just good players.
I like, I like. I like Kudas. I think that his performances probably not reflected in his numbers so far this season. I think he's one of them players. Every game he feels like when you keep getting the ball out to him, it feels like something's going to happen.
For me. Yeah. I mean, I'm not obviously, as an attack, I'd like to see More goals and assists. But what he does is he adds chaos and he breaks lines. And then you can give it to a player who could like Bergfowl or Simons or whoever to then play the pass or to. I. I'm not expecting huge numbers from him, but I'm expecting to. For us to miss him when he's not there. And I think that's going to be really, really important to us.
Just. I'm just looking at elite table as well. And it's like, you know what played 4138 goals. 41 goal against third in the table. City away, West Ham away. Like two hard away games out. Like it's a really good start. It's a really, really good start, isn't it? And I just think it's important to just. You just got to try and hang on to those teams at the top for as long as you can.
Exactly. Can we. Much more incidents apart from Fabianski was on the bench. I. I thought he'd retired, but they've just resigned him now that but also.
You can see work is that West.
Ham keeper Hermanson and great all they've.
Conceded 11 goals in the first four games. Like they've lost 51 home to Chelsea and 3, 0 home to spurs in their first couple of home games. Like long season. Long season. That's going to be for them.
Let's talk about the incidents. It. Is there any way it was a foul for the Romero score?
I I honestly, I've watched it back so many times and was just like, I can't understand what's been. Why that's been given. But if you give it the big. The thing that enraged me even more was about five minutes later has it not a penalty on Van de Vin then when he's wrestling. That's. And that's. That's the thing isn't like I don't mind them disallowing it as much as I disagree with it. But then a few minutes later then how is then it not a pen? Like that's the piece that's just. And yeah, I tell you what like frustrated me was like it was just sort of like all. It was just accepted by all the punters like, oh, okay. And they just completely brushed over it and I was like, how are we not going? Like that's a really poor decision again. And I know that they don't. The whole thing about V V. They don't want to re referee, they don't want to overturn decisions and all of that. But like that was a lot for me, that was a blatant mistake from the official. But fact, all you can say is, thankfully, it doesn't matter. In the, in that game it didn't matter. But if you think of all of the, all of the goals that a lot down the road have scored the last few seasons from set pieces that have been enough, they scored a few against us where, remember Vicario literally being wrestled and like, that was fine. And it, it just comes back to the consistency thing again that if you're gonna disallow it, cool. But like it's. You've got to just. You've got to constantly give it then, haven't you? And for me, I'd up. I don't want to see personally that type of goal disallowed and I don't really want to see a penalty given for the one on Van de M five minutes later. Like, I don't, I don't want it to be a non contact sport in the box. Like there should be a little bit of it. So for me it's like it should be a goal and not a penalty. Like not no goal, no penalty. But it's hard. Is it? You look at it a little bit through sort of spurs glasses and it's like, am I, am I truly neutral? I'm looking at it? Probably not, but I just watched it and was just like, I don't understand what's wrong with it.
Yeah, cool. Then the red card. I saw some people saying, I watched a fans forum thing on YouTube straight after and two of them were like, the West Ham fan was going, you know, it's a shame he caught and tore his sock because otherwise it would just be innocuous and it might just be in a yellow. No, no, he was off. His foot was off the ground and he went into someone's shin. Like, it's a straight red. Yeah, it's a straight red.
Well, what I would say about it is it's a. It's a clear red. There's not. That's one. I think you saw it in the player's reaction. No, no. Spurs plus sort of went mad at Suchek and nowhere stand because I think it's one of them. I think he was just lunging for the ball. It's a bit. It's just an honest. Do you know, I mean, he's not trying to do you or anything like that. It's just a mistimed.
Poor.
Yeah, there's no doubt. Like if he hadn't had his shin pad on and he's. Do you Know what I mean? That would have been ugly for him. Do you know what I mean? He have been. Yeah, Pelini would have been off. So I don't think there's any question around that at all. But, you know, it's what it is.
That's it. I mean, then we had the. The first goal. Great corner. About time. We got one. Great corner. Float right into the back post. Great header from Sar. Great goal. The second one, we talked about that with Bergval. Third one. Van Den in the right place. Got great effort on him.
Isn't he fantastic? And can. Can I say as well that sometimes when you are playing against a side and you're one nil up and they go down to 10 men, that the game can fizzle out and it can stay at 1 nil and, you know, I mean, not a lot can happen. And I just think it was so great to just kill the game.
Yeah.
Like, as soon as that second one went in, it was like, right, two nil and they're down to it's over, which was fantastic. And, you know, it's easy. I sometimes think it's easy said than done to do that. I know West Ham didn't make it too difficult for us, but we really upped it after the red card. Sometimes you can go, you know what, we're winning one nil. We'll just, you know, we'll just keep the ball now. And like, that's when it can get dangerous. So I was just really impressed that they went, man advantage now. Like, let's really sort of stamp our authority on the game.
That was two stats I've got for you. That was our biggest away win at West Ham since 1962. That feels mad, doesn't it? Yeah. Wow. Three now. Yeah. And then we've won our opening two away league games without conceding for just the second time in our history. Wow. Yeah.
And that's City away and West Ham.
Away as well, you know.
That's remarkable. It's remarkable. It's brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. It's just as well, isn't it? It's like, great start. Not getting too carried away. But I just, I. I like what I'm seeing. What I think what I'm seeing so far feels sustainable. Do you know what I mean?
Like, we're not a really good way of putting it.
We're not doing stuff that's like, this is crazy. Like, do. I mean, it's like, it's professional people doing their jobs. Like, it's just good performance all round. And your point A minute ago about, like, spurs are better than West Ham. Like, let's just play like that. Like that sort of feels like what the approach is. Know what I mean? So it just feels like we can maintain this. I'm not saying we're going to finish third, you know, I mean, be wrapped, but it feels like this isn't like we're playing out of our skin. We're doing stuff that the Premier League's never seen before. It's like we're not doing any of that. We're just being really consistent and just good at the jobs that each player needs to do.
Is it. I feel like he's reducing the element of chance and yes, random. There's a great quote from Frank. We find it, I think it's hugely important that we are good defensively. Obviously we want to score, we want to play forward, we want to play offensive football. We scored eight goals, clearly we can score goals. But for so many games, that foundation, being able to get clean sheets is key. It's something that we work very hard on throughout preseason. They deserve a lot of praise, the players, all the coaches, and especially Matt Wells. And I think that reducing the element of random and chance is such an.
Important thing, but also the simple things in football is if you. If you can be tight the back, you can win games without playing well, like, fundamentally. Whereas, like, if you. If you let in three in, but you can, but you're scoring five every week, there'll be weeks where you can't score five, as we saw for the last couple of seasons. And then it's like, wow. To even draw games, you've got to create an absolute stack full of chances. And it's like, whilst I don't want us to become too reliant on the set pieces for that all of a sudden to be a bit of a weapon. So again, look at the lot down the road. Look at Chelsea when Mourinho was there, so tight at the back. And it's like, then when you are having an off down front, a goal, you can nick it, you can win one nil. And it's like, we haven't had the ability to win one n a long, long time. I don't know if I. I don't know if we've ever had it, to be totally honest with you.
Have you seen Muhammad Kudus has got his elephant chair back? Have you seen this? This is a real thing, which is great. So Muhammad's kudos used to celebrate a West Ham by going and sitting on a wooden chair. Shaped like an elephant at West Ham were giving it back to him, which is very nice. And the other thing I've seen is Pedro porro has played 87 Premier League games and has never featured in a nil Nil draw. And it's an all time record. Wow, that's great.
Isn't it great? That's great. As a defender, that must irritate him a little bit.
Yeah, it's. Oh, yeah. What else? James Ward Prowse. Southampton are 15th in the Championship. They drew nil nil with Portsmouth in the big fishy Darby. But it doesn't feel like a great move now because he's not. He was known for his dead ball. He's not doing that for West Ham, is he? Is he, Is he. Is it a bad move or is it a good move? Because he would be in the championship now. Could he have done better?
It probably is, you know, I mean, because he's planned at the highest level again, I just think that, like, I think Wallpath has got some good qualities. I think he's, he's limitations are obvious in terms of. You don't get about the pitch very well. So it's like, that's why I cut. Like when I saw the team and saw the midfield pairing was Warpress and Suchek, I'm just like, like he needs, he needs some legs around him. Do you know what I mean? It's like he's, he's great with the ball at his feet. Passing range is good. Deadpool's fantastic. And when you've got players like Tom Huddleston, I mean, think back to when we had him plan in, in midfield for us. You needed to, you needed legs with him. If, if he ends up exposed, players will just run past him. But you can get the best out of those players if you can strengthen your midfield. And I just, like, I just look at the way West Ham are set up and I'm like, that feels absolutely crazy to me. So I've always quite liked him. I feel like he's another one like, what is he? Probably late 20s, early 30s, but he's definitely had, definitely had his peak, that's for sure.
He reminds me of those Spurs Academy players all played together like the Mason, the Winx.
Townsend. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Where they were told. Alex Pritchard, where they're all told how to play football and they were good little passes on the ball. Tom Carroll. Yeah, but that was it. But he's luckily was able to hit a dead ball as well. So he had a little bit above all of them, that's what it reminds me of.
The other two wider football things that we have to talk about is one, Sheffield United. Have you been following that?
No, but I've got a little quiz for you coming up and it comes up in that, annoyingly. So what's. What's up with Sheffield United?
Well, they, they. They lost the playoff fun last year to sunderland. They got 92 points in the championship last year and obviously didn't get up. They. They sacked Chris Wilder at the end of the season. They brought in Reuben Sells, who's managed at Southampton, maybe Sheffield Wednesday, Spanish coach. They've lost five out of five. They've sacked him. And Chris Walder's going back in there for the third time and you're just like, what a mess. What an absolute mess of a, like, start to the season that is.
They are bottom of the championship.
Switch.
Yeah, yeah. The only other the team above them is Sheffield Wednesday, who have lost four and drawn one. I've got a tiny affinity with Sheffield Wednesday because my auntie bought me a mini football which I used to take to school, which was a Sheffield Wednesday one in primary school. But that's it.
That's a mess. And the other club that are just all over the place are Rangers. You've seen that.
Yeah.
Like they lost two nil at home to Hearts this weekend. Five games they haven't won. They lost nine. One in Europe, didn't. That's Russell Martin.
Yeah. How.
How he got that job anyway is just unbelievable. But they look an absolute mess. And I'll tell you what, that's a toughening up period for Mikey Moore. Do you know what I mean? Having to just deal with that like that, you know, that's good for his development to just.
Didn't they. Didn't they draw last week, Neil nil against Celtic though?
Yeah, yeah.
So that's a good result for him.
But then all of the other results have been dreadful and like, I think that they've barely scored all season. Like, they just looks a shambles. There's an absolute shamble. So I mean, he, he's again, that's just. That's like Reuben Amarin, Graham Potter. It's just a matter of time before, do you know what I mean, that they pull the plug on that.
All right, players who played for Tottenham and Rangers.
Defoe.
Yeah, that's. That's only one of the modern era.
Alan Gordon, Jury, Alan Hutton.
Oh, yeah, I've got Richard Goff and Graham Roberts as well. Hutton, Falcao, Gaza Cruncher. Cruncher adventure.
Yeah. Gaza did a bit up in Rangers, didn't he as well.
Did. Wait, I'm just checking this now. Before Pedro Mendez.
J. Mendez. He scored a couple. He scored a screamer in a Glasgow Derby as well.
That's cool.
He. He must have been a bit of you. Was it a little bit before you really started watching spurs?
He left in 2006, I moved here in 2008. And so you would have loved. He was.
He would have been your guy. He so would have been a good looking, good looking bloke. Not like good footballer like. He so would have been a bit of you.
I love a midfielder. He's born there after me in the month. Yeah, there you go. I've got a little. Do you know when you get. You just remember a random footballer and just goes in your head. Mark Poom. Remember him? Goalkeeper. Honestly, I don't know. It just came into my head.
That's great. I love stuff like I. I've started doing this thing where when I'm like when I'm out running and I'm starting to get tired, I have to distract my mind. Like if I think too. If I think too much about like one foot in front of the other. Keep this, all of that or break, like, I'll completely lose it. So what I do, I play a game in my head where I go through all the Premier League teams and I'll go in alphabetical order and I'll start with. I'll pick a team at random. Then I'll either work back or work forward. So like, let's just say I start with Everton and then I'll go through alphabetically and be like, what players played for Everton and Arsenal? And can I think of three? What players played for Everton and Villa? Can I think of him? Before you know it, like 15 minutes is gone. So good. So, so good. But I was out early and I was like, I couldn't think of players that have played for Everton and Fulham. I was stuck on it for absolutely age. At one point I was even like, I'm gonna can this. I need to google it. Like, I'm driving myself insane. But it was great. It was great fun at the time of my life.
Who is it? Everton and Fulham.
I was struggling. I was really, really struggling. I haven't googled it. I haven't looked it up. So I was like, I can't. I need to be out. I need someone to tell me or I need to work it out. But it's just, it's just a great game. So you. You have the random players and then I play stuff like that all the time.
I mean, I've got. I've got it in front of me.
Go on.
I've got. Well, there's one who played for spurs as well, who played for those two. Really?
It's probably really awful. I was just. You know, when you're like. It's probably staring me in the face. But I thought about it so much, I just couldn't.
So he played 2000, 2003 for Fulham. 117 matches, 53 goals, and he was at Everton. 08 to 11, 102 games, 27.
Louis Saha.
Oh.
That'S great. But it occupied my mind for a while earlier, so, you know, not all bad.
Do you want any more or should I just.
Yeah, because I always try and name three when I'm playing it.
We've got Simon Davis, another Spurs one.
Oh, yeah.
Both Shane. Shane Duffy. You got Alex Roby. Andrew Johnson. Lookman.
Oh, yeah. Do you know what? I think that was just one of them. That was one of them. Like, I know that. Do you know what I mean? I just. Yeah, yeah. Earlier, I just couldn't get it.
Get it. Oh, my God, his name. I've known Martin St. Kellenberg. Remember him?
Oh, the Dutch keeper. Yeah, yeah.
I'm gonna. That's gonna be stuck in my head. The other thing I was reading about was the unofficial football world championships. It feels like something you do as a kid, you know, because what they do is they go, when someone wins the World cup, then whoever beats them is the unofficial world champions. It's because the current world champions are Kosovo, because they beat Sweden and Sweden be Algeria. Algeria beat Liberia, who beat Sierra Leone, who beat Ivory coast, who beat Uruguay, who beat Argentina.
Amazing.
Brilliant.
Amazing.
I love this stuff.
Love it, Love it.
This has been going since 1930.
So good. There must be a massive, like Excel spreadsheet somewhere where someone has just gone back as literally as far as you can go. Surprised you haven't got that.
I was about to say. I'm just keeping my mouth shut. Yeah, I've done that before. We talk a little quickly then. We've got Villarreal. Villarreal just lost off like Madrid, but they're a bit like us. They are fourth in the league. Yeah. Good team like Thomas Party is definitely not going to play. We got some players we should be recognizing, though. Yuzi Perez is there. Nicholas Pepe is there. I completely forgotten about Nicholas Pele. Pepe Solomon's there. Our boy, so he shouldn't be playing against us. Juan Foyth is there.
That'll be. You know what, when you play sides like that, they'll be well organized. They'll be good in on the ball. Like it's. Look, it's a game where I'm confident but like they're a good side. Do you know what I mean? Like that. That's like playing a top six, top seven, prem team. Like they'll be. They're a good team.
Exactly.
So we've got to be. We've got to be on it.
Yeah. We've got to just be professional, which I'm hoping we will be. We are. We've got better odds to win. Quite significant. We're better than more than twice the odds to win. So it should be interesting. But who knows? I. It's just great to be back in the Champions League. I don't like this new format because. Because you know that Inter, that Inter Milan game where you went, all right, we lost four, three, but it was amazing and we finished on such a high. Now we're going to go play him again. And that game, it's the game I wish I'd gone to out of all of them. But it was rocking from every. Everyone who went said it was rocking and everyone was up for it because we, we knew what had happened. Now it's just like you're just playing one offs and it's not quite as fun.
I get, I. I get that. I think the most important thing, even in this format, as was with the old format, got win your home games. You win your home games, you'll be fine. Do you know? I mean, and that was, you know, we've never had a particularly good away European record, but we've always been quite strong at home and I think if we can do that, and I think Tuesday is just important, if you can start. Start yourself off of a win.
Yeah.
You know. You know, because that. I do think with the draw we've got, without being sort of too above our station, I'm like, we've got a good chance of getting in that top eight.
That's what we should be. Expect to be doing. To be doing.
Definitely aiming for that. Definitely. Definitely. So if we can kick the, kick the campaign off of a win, that'll be brilliant.
Yeah. Yeah. Right. I've prepared a little something. Little something. I've got some ex players and you just have to tell me what club they're at now.
Great. Love it.
A lot of players have retired. A lot more players have retired than I thought.
This would be an amazing quiz. And they've just all retired. No club. No club.
I, I had to go through and there's been so many retired.
Love it.
And Don Belly. Oh.
Where is he now? Is he in Turkey? Isn't he?
Not anymore.
You know what? I don't know. I have to pass that.
He's at Nice now.
Oh, that's a great first one. I mean talk about a career that's just completely nose dived.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Galatas. Good start, Good start. Okay. Nabil Bentleb.
I think he's in the French league as well.
He is in the French.
Is here. Is he at Lille?
Mate, that is believable. Strong. Can we just say he end on valet. Won Serie A title. The Serie A title in Napoli. He's got anyone in the Super League with Galatasaraya.
I mean this, this is where the. It makes. The whole thing's just who's one what. It makes a mockery of it. Do you know what I mean?
This, because Michael Richards is always having to go at Harry Kane for not having won anything. And you go like, you get these guff players who've won something because they're part of a team and then you get Harry Kane and that just doesn't make sense.
Exactly, exactly.
Vlad Kirikez.
Oh my God.
I mean it could be anywhere, right?
He could be anywhere. I feel like he, I feel like he could be somewhere. Like I feel like he could be in the Turkish League or, or like he could be in like I'm gonna, I'm gonna have a bit of a punt and say like he's, he's maybe like in the Greek league with someone like Olympiacos.
He. I'll tell you where he is. He is at what is now it's the same club that we bought him from.
Which was that? Stour Bucharest.
Bucharest, yeah. Which is now called fcsb. They're the successor to sb. Yeah, good, good work again. Clinton Ng.
Oh my word. So straight away I'm my, my gut goes to. He's probably in the French league somewhere. He's probably playing somewhere towards the mid bot to lose.
Let me just triple check this because I've just read. Oh, it says he's without a club now.
Brilliant.
Oh, he's without a club according to this now, yes, we use it Rapid Bucharest. So he went Tottenham, Marseille, Mar for two years, Dino Moscow for three years, Sivas, Rapid, Bo Carest. And now he's without a club.
He's not been with us for a long time that it feels like, he's only just left. Do you know what I mean? Do you know what I mean?
Was he the one? Was it him or in Kudu that did the cross? It was exactly.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Vincent Jansen.
He was in Turkey for a bit, wasn't he? I feel.
Can I give you his full name? Vincent Petrus. Anna Sebastian Janssen.
You wouldn't think that if you looked at him. I'm gonna say he's. Maybe he's Dutch, isn't he? So he's in the Dutch league.
There's some.
There's something that makes me go, is he playing in Belgium for someone like Antwerp?
He is playing for Antwerp.
Get in there. I need to get a life.
No, it's. You need to be on a podcast on a Sunday night. It's exactly where you deserve to be. Jack Clark. Jack Raymond Clark.
Ipswich.
He's Ipswich. Yeah. That was a shame, wasn't it? Like coming out of woozy leads.
Yeah.
Never got a game for us, but.
I always feel like, you know, like that type of signing gets criticized. People go, we wasted 12 million quid or whatever. But I'm like, that's the type of game I think someone like spurs, like we should be doing. Because if you look at players that have come from the lower league, obviously Del is. There's James Madison. There's a lot of players that have gone and done well. Mason Mount. Gone and done well in the lower leagues. And actually, you know, you can.
The best defender we've had in 50 years. I still love him. I've still got his shirt. I still got a Welsh shirt with rodent on the back. If I got. If you've got a shirt now and you had to get a name, I know it's not cool if you're over 30. I. I still like having a name on my back. Who would you get?
I've got one shirt that's got a name and number on the back and it's 26 king.
But what would you do now? I mean, that's a great shirt.
Current. Current Squad.
Yeah. Levy. 69.
Orange Squad. Probably Van De.
Yeah, it's cool.
Probably. And it's a slightly different number as well, isn't it? You know, it's just 20.
Is that him?
37. And of him.
Who's 20 kudus? 20. Oh, that's it. I was looking. Yeah. Yep, yep, yep. Sorry. Should know that stuff. Gazaniga. Your keeper should have kept it. Oh. Oh, no.
I think I know this Girona.
It's. It's scary.
Is it?
Girona it is Girona. All right. If you get three out of three, I will. Would organize and I'll buy you dinner.
And you can buy me a Van Der Venture.
I'll buy you Van Deventure.
No, no, no. Not at those prices.
I'll buy you one from China. If you can get these three, I will buy you a van. Adventure NASA. Chadley. Oh.
I feel like he's probably playing in Belgium.
He hasn't got a club. That's fine. You might.
But then find money saved. Money saved, money saved.
You can have these two as well, then.
Jack Fit Tankanga, Sheffield United. Just gone there. Hasn't. He's just gone there. He was one I like. I. I really thought, wow, we've found one at the academy here, like. And I think that's. I think that's the case of. Was saying about Adam Smith a few weeks ago after the Bournemouth game, if stuff had just happened differently. I think there's a. There's a lot. I said Adam Smith, like, there could have been a long spurs career there. I think Tanganga's the same. Like, he had some injuries, fell out of favor, couldn't get himself back. I feel like there was a really good defender there, but just wasn't to be, was it?
No. We didn't even get any money for him, did we?
Did he look great under Jose? Didn't he came in and he was playing. He planned full back, wasn't it? Because initially he was the center half and I was at his debut when we lost 1 nil at home to Liverpool. And he was amazing. He was absolutely amazing. It was just like, oh, this guy looks. Yeah, looks great.
But, you know, I mean, he's 26 now, so he should be. Maybe he isn't where he's. He's not the tallest. Like they. Yeah, I really wanted it to work out for him.
Yeah. He came across in the Amazon documentary. It's like a really nice guy as well, didn't he? Yeah. Like good family, you know, like, just like love Tottenham. One of those.
Yeah.
Maybe he's in the crew with Townsend and Winks and Caval, you know, I mean, another. Another one in that crew.
Remember the. The video in the night? What's that Standby. Stand by me. Great, great, great.
The amount of players that the spurs youth system has, like, developed who have gone on to have professional careers is. Do you know what I mean? Like, it is amazing. Like someone like tanganga in 15 years, you know, we won't be talking about. We probably will be talking about him. Because he'll be in one of our quizzes.
Talk about Gary Butters.
Forgotten that. That is. That's legacy podcast chat that, isn't it Guy Butters, wasn't it. Was it Guy?
Was it Gabby? Yeah. I mean, listen to these. Harry Winks is still playing. I mean we did. We were Ledly Soul Campbell, Stephen Car Kane. Nick Barnby was there. Peter Crouch. But like recently, more recently, Car Walker Peters, Andros Townsend was there, wasn't he? Adam Smith is still playing like this. Yeah. Decent players. Jake Livermore was. Player. Was a good player for a while. Danny Rose sort of. There's some good players out there. Final one. And this is this. This is why I knew my money was safe. Alex Pritchard.
Oh, where did he go off?
Spurs.
Feel like he was at Huddersfield for a bit, maybe. What do you do? There's something that's. That's going mls. I don't know why. I don't know why. Toronto.
No, he is playing for Sivaspore, who plays in the Super League in Turkey.
Was. I was on way off with the MLS shout.
Yeah, a little bit. I mean it could be much further away. He's well into the Asian side of Turkey. Yeah. Tottenham. Then he went to for mercy at Peterborough Swindon. Brentford. West Brom on loan went from us to Norwich, if you remember. He went to us from. From US to Norwich in 2016. That feels like a long time because he, he.
There was a lot of prospects with him and didn't he have a really good preseason and did he start maybe one of the first games of the season? And then he got a really bad injury, didn't he? Did he get a leg break or something like that? And he was out for ages and then he never got back from it. I feel like. I feel like I can remember that.
Just remember him being really big and like there was talk of like Barcelona is the time when Tottenham had Alex Inglethorp, if you remember. That's a really good under 18 squad. But then it just didn't. Didn't work out.
Yeah, I just quickly googled it and it's like, yeah, he had to undergo surgery on an ankle issue which kept him out for a significant period that was at 22. So, yeah, that's what I mean. Like there's so many footballers, all the ability in the world and they're sliding doors moment like that and you know, I mean, and it's like. It's just all about right place, right time, isn't it? And you can fly. Like with Delhi, we signed him and like, he was on the. Like he wasn't going to play much and we had a load of center midfield injuries and we just had to play him and it was like. It just. It went mad, didn't it, after that?
Yeah. You're gonna make me sad of that boy, but I feel I haven't loved. You know, I haven't. I felt it difficult to love a lot of spurs players recently. I kind of love a lot of this team. I'm getting that love back. I want to go.
I just, I. I feel really protective about the manager because I just feel like he's a really good guy. Like, I just feel like he knows what. He just feels like a proper serious operator. That's what he feels like to me.
I just feel like we got. Like we've got a proper manager who's not an extreme in one way or another. He's just. It's the first time since Poch that we've had a manager that feels just. It's got flexibility and. And a bit of skill about him.
It feels like it just fits as well. Do you know what I mean? Like, it just feels like it's the right match and I feel like we've been. We've been chasing the girl that's way out of our league a couple of times. Do you know what I mean? The supermodel with, you know, we've managed to. To go out on a few days and it's just not worked. And now we're like, you know what, what would make us happy?
Thomas Frank, Ugly duckling. I think, as well. I think like we. The. The time of the model is over. It's. I think. Did you read that article about the end of the pep? It's the end of the pep era or Pepism, where his style of play just doesn't work anymore. And I think we've got a manager that will actually be quite active in the new way of working. I think we'll be. I'm not saying we'll be up there because I think. I think the squad. I think we need a better striker. I really do. I think Richardson will be great, but I don't think he will be the best. And there aren't many. We know there's not many strikers. Isaac was very expensive. Harlan's doing well, but we're never going to get someone.
And I. I also do think we're going to have some of the classic sort of frustrating spurs results this year. You know, where. Where you come up against someone and they get an early goal and they have two banks of foot and it's like. Oh, like breaking it down's hard. Like I'm getting that. But I just, just feel really like excited again and optimistic and you know, that might be. That might just be because we're in a real extreme difference to what we have been in. But I just want to try and keep hold of this feeling for as long as possible.
Yeah, for sure.
But it's great to be excited and look for like I can't wait for Tuesday night.
Right.
I can't wait. And like the game from when we potted last week up until Saturday, I was like, I can't wait for the West Ham game.
Right.
It's so nice to feel like that.
I'm looking forward to the Brighton test. That'll be a great game. And then Doncaster. Who's he going to play? And then you go Wolves. And then we should be beating Bodo Glimt. And then Leeds massive game.
Yeah.
Big Joe Roden going into his hometown. Really exciting. That was mad Manchester Derby today. Man United. Let's talk about Man United in a second. But it's also Fener versus Trubs on Spore. Who are the keepers? Onana Edison. So they're playing against each other on the day of the Manchester. It's weird. Is it?
So what happened with it with what's happened with Edison there? Like he just went for like 10 mil and it was like what's happened? I know he's not the keeper that he was and I know that. And they might have gone, there's a chance to get Donnaruma but to do that we've got to get Edison. But it just felt like 10 mil and he's gone to a. An inferior league. I don't know, it just felt a bit of a weird one that for me. And they've really gone under the radar the whole thing.
It feels really cutthroat for such a servant of that squad. Like D room is a great keeper. I've loved him for a long time. But it's weird.
The saved on a roommate today.
From where my life seen it.
Oh, it's good. It's good save. That was. I enjoyed that. Say Harland was phenomenal today in that game. Like it was just, you know, got the ball up to him. His hold up play was like clinical in the box. It was good. It was a bit like watching, you know when you used to watch those Harry Kane performances for spurs when the rest of the team were okay and like he would just score a Couple of great goals. He'd defend his box from set piece. It was, it was like that. He was just the guy today.
I need to watch it. I'm going to go watch it now.
And the rhymes on the Warframe room.
Surely this is what I wanted to bring up because he just, he keeps on going. Yeah, there's some days I hate the players. There's, you know, there's some days where I just don't think we're very good. When are you going to start doing something about it? I, I, I don't know why they've got him. He was so good at his previous club.
Though. Doesn't there, like, when you're trying to, like, you stand out. Like, we're building. It's going to take time to get Man United, but I get all that. But, like, you've got to win some games in the meantime. You can't just keep going, oh, like, you know, we need time. You know, we can't get back to the top overnight. But, like, he's been in charge for nearly a year and isn't it something like seven or eight wins in, like, 32, 33 games? Like, it's, it's relegation form. Like, you could put, you could put someone like Sean Dyche in there and he probably would win more games. Like, it's bonkers.
And then what, what, what do they do? Like, what? I, I really don't understand what do they do? Because they're all for Man United and it seems the expectations are massive and they're going to build this massive new stadium, but I just, I just don't know what they do.
I look at United again and I just think in some, there's some absolute, like, fundamental things there. Their best player but our country mile is Bruno, right? Significantly. And, like, what's Bruno good at? He creates chances and he scored goals. And like, his stats since he's, since he's come to the Premier League, I think there's no one better. Or maybe it's de Bruyne, but, like, he's one of the best ever. He's playing defensive midfield and I'm just like, surely you get your most lethal players playing up the higher end of the pitch where they can do damage and, like, do away with this stupid wing back system, which, for the players you've got, doesn't work. Like, just have a little bit of, like, have enough about you to go, like, this isn't working. But it's ego in it. It's ego to be like, no, this will work. And it's like, it will not. You will get sacked. No, but I'm with you.
Who.
Who the hell go. Who do they go after? Like, I tell you what. Oliver Glassner going into United. That would be. That would be the appointment. He would absolutely sort that out.
Sure. Peep show. It's one of my favorite shows of all time. There's a bit towards the end of the show. I can't remember which series is where Super Hands. It's. It's like New Year's Day or it's a Halloween party or something. And he go. They. They go to a couple of different parties and then one they go to and they go in the doors. Super Hands comes out and he's like, I need to go and have a lie down. Have a nice cup of tea. What was going on there is too insane. They need that manager.
Yeah.
I give you Gareth Southgate. You just need someone just to level everything off a little bit. Give you predictability. Me make it boring.
Thomas Frank. That could have. He would have. It's. It's that got. I get it. I don't think Southgate. I don't think Southgate's the guy. But I really get what you mean about. It's that it's. It's. It's. It is a. It is the bore. A boring guy.
Yeah. They need to get rid of ex players from the. From the. From the media. Because the amount of pressure that people like Scholes put Roy Keane, not Gary Neville. I think he does a good job of not put. Being like, we're Man United. We should be bigger than this. Because they're not anymore. They might have more fans and more money, but they're not that team.
Get him on your coaching staff. Get him in.
I. I think Roy Keane's a bit of a dinosaur. I think he's too much of a bully. Scalzi would be good.
Or just have them involved in some capacity. Do you know what I mean? Like that. And. And have the power of nostalgia a little. Like use it. Do you know what I mean? Try and. But God knows where they will turn.
It still blows me. Blows me. Blows. Blows my mind that Marcus Rashford is playing for Barcelona. I. I don't understand how that's happened. But good luck to him. Right. We're just. We're just randomly talking about stuff. Yeah. See you in a week. I'm really excited. I just. We'll have two spurs games to talk about.
Big week. Two wins. Let's go.
Four points. If it's gonna be four Points. I'll take the win in midweek. So let's. Let's just do them.
I think two. I think two wins this week. Honestly. Confident now. Confident. I'm bouncing. After a Derby win, I'm bouncing.
But you said just before Bournemouth, maybe West Ham, like we are going to lose some games. Yeah, we're. But now you're confident with these two in particular or just more confident?
I think. I think I'm confident with these two. Like the. I think I predicted us to maybe get beat by Brighton, but I think I had us to beat Bournemouth. So those. They just might be the other way around. Brighton will be a tough test, but I don't think that Brighton are as dangerous as they have been the last couple of seasons. But any game in the Premier League is difficult. Right. Liverpool struggle at Burnley today. Do you know, I mean. And duck and dug it out. Yeah, they really very fortunate. So you know, we've got to be on it. But I think that you'll. We'll see what you said earlier rotation. A couple of players will come in Tuesday. A couple of players will come in at the weekend and we've got, at the moment we've got the luxury where we can do that a little bit. And Frank, Frank will absolutely do that.
That's it. That's it. All right, mate. Always, always, always a pleasure. Thank you. I will see you in a week and I'll speak to him. See you next week. And don't forget, the future's bright. If you just hear the white come on. You spurs someone you Spurs. I always thought there was very, very.
Many people interested in football.
And I always thought that football was a very important game. But I never realized until today just how important it is.
Whether the wonder boys of Pihart Lane are or are not the team of the century can't possibly be more than a matter of opinion. Well, they're the finest team in Great Britain and one of the best in the world.
We are about the glory of the game. We are about playing with style. We are Tottenham Hotspur. The curve of the ball, the billow of the net, the beating of the trap and the picking of the lock. The swiftness of thought, the lightness of touch. We are Ginele Greaves Klinsmen. We are the collective gasp, the intake of breath, the flick, the trick, the 30 young free kick. We are Hoddle Mabbit and King. We are the lob, the chip, the dummy and the volley. We are the hat trick, the scissor kick. We are Bill Nick.
That is schoolboy's own stuff.
We are the outside of the boot, the inside of the net. And those seconds that last forever.
Vanderva to level it up. Rafael Van der Vaart. Two, two. It's quite a game, isn't it always?
We are Jennings, Defoe and Perryman. Glory past, glory future. What was, what is, what's next? We are Blanch, Flower, Adelis and baal. We are about winning with a flourish. We are about winning with style. We are about the glory of the game. Daring to try, daring to risk, daring to dream. To dare is to do.
He's all over Duck and we're fighting the top. He can really stab them. Going all the way again here. And Leonard's kicked him out. Oh, this is incredible. This is quite incredible. Truly a glory, glory day for Tottenham Hotsburg.
