4 Tips to Make It Easier to Say No

A speaker shares four practical tips for saying no without damaging relationships. The advice draws on personal experience to help you set boundaries and build confidence in situations where you're tempted to overcommit.
After spending the last decade building a million dollar company, I can tell you that saying no is a skill that takes practice. Being able to say no is one of the most powerful tools in your arsenal, but doing so can be a little difficult. Here are four things that can make it a little bit easier. Number one Practice getting comfortable. Saying no takes time and effort. Practice saying no in lower stakes situations in your life and build your confidence so that you can start to say no to bigger things. Number two Be assertive but respectful. Not everyone is trying to manipulate or gaslight you. Most of the time kind but firm delivery is a great way to ensure that you don't take things on you don't want to do while also keeping your relationships intact. 3. Take some time to reflect. It's totally okay not to be sure in the moment if something is right for you. When this happens, take some time to think about the pros and cons of the opportunity presented to make sure that you make the best possible decision for you. And finally, don't protest too much. As Shakespeare wrote years ago, it's never a good idea to provide long winded explanations for something. Being clear and concise is the best way to deliver an assertive and confident no. Remember that you don't owe anyone an explanation for having a boundary or a preference. So go out there, get more comfortable saying no and take up the space that you deserve. It's a great way to ensure that you don't take things on you don't want to do while also keeping your relationships intact. Number three Take some time.
