HBS in 5 Minutes: Real Talk on Professors, Pressure & Personal Growth

This is a YouTube video titled "HBS in 5 Minutes: Real Talk on Professors, Pressure & Personal Growth" featuring a rapid-fire Q&A style discussion between two speakers about the Harvard Business School experience, including favorite professors, networking tips, and personal growth insights. The conversation involves two unidentified speakers and does not include Coach Elle.
So let's go to our Fast pass insights. This is a part of the podcast where we're just going to give you some rapid fire questions for you to give us some of your best advice. So my first question is, what's one must have for a successful application?
I'm going to be cheesy and say Ellen, thank you, Hapa. Let's move on, let's move on.
What was your favorite class or professor?
Michael Shue, Business at the basis of the pyramid. Unfortunately for you guys, he just retired, but he's still around campus. He's the best person, best professor. I wish he would adopt me. I would be his grandchild anytime. He does a lot of cases on Latin America, so best class at hbs. So sorry you guys won't have him teaching it.
They have to find a good replacement for him. What's the most overrated part of the MBA experience?
Most overrated? I think it's this thing that, oh, you're going to go through it and then, and then everything's going to magically work out in your life. It's not.
What's your best networking tip?
I feel like actually, you know, you could take going deliberate about it, organized. Uh, I actually preferred being more organic and, you know, vulnerable and, and, and just being who I am and, you know, it's gonna take some time. I only really found my best friends today towards the end of the mba, even though I met most of them first week. I feel like we're all so busy and it's so crazy. It takes time for things to settle. So I feel like if you really want to build, you know, deep relationships, not like a lot of shallow relationships, it takes time, takes effort. And I, I did prefer to go through like, I, I know it's not that rapid, but like going through the people that my values matched with them because those are going to be my lifelong friends versus someone that's, oh, this person is going to work in this company that I want to work for. You could do that ideal, right?
More kind of people making those genuine connections with people rather than kind of a more advantageous match.
They, they teach us that in the happiness class that those are the useless friends. They even name it useless friends. You need useless friends. I really disagree because I feel like those are the most useful friends that I have because they are the people that are going to be there when I'm crying. Not necessarily 100% crying for a job, but, you know, yeah, they call it useless friends.
I agree. Those are the people who are going to be there for you. Because that's not all going to work out. Not everything's going to be perfect. And what advice would you give to your pre MBA self in 10 words or less?
Get ready to grow up. Ooh, good one. That's a good one.
And what's your favorite thing about Harvard that nobody really knows about?
I feel like, at least in the HBS community, I didn't see people enjoying being on campus, being, you know, Boston, Cambridge, if you go there, anyone who goes there, if you just walk by yourself. HBS campus, Harvard Yard, Charles River Esplanade. That place is so gorgeous. There's so much history there. So you know that. That beauty of contemplating going for a long walk on the morning and feeling the sun on your skin and seeing people rowing on the. The river or like, docks. I don't know. I feel like I would not see people doing that. Taking the time to contemplate, to meditate, to be there, because the experience is so overwhelming that if you don't deliberately step out of it, that magic. You're not gonna find it if you don't seek it.
That's good. Yeah. And it. It's such a beautiful campus. And like the fall, the colors, the beautiful snow, it is such a beautiful place.
