How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome with Your Stories

An admissions consultant explains how to recognize and value your personal and professional stories to overcome imposter syndrome. She shows MBA applicants how reflecting on meaningful experiences and contributions can strengthen both your mindset and your application.
Do you feel like your stories aren't good enough to get you into a top MBA program? Over the last decade as an admissions consultant, I've worked with a lot of clients who have imposter syndrome when it comes to their stories. They didn't sell their company to Google when they were 22 or do something like found their country's first trans rights organization, so they feel like they have nothing to share that will impress the admissions committee. That's just not true. Everyone has things that they can and should be really proud of. The key here is looking into your past with the right lens. Before you start writing your essays, reflect on your personal and professional life. What sorts of projects were you proudest of or most recognized for at work? When did you feel the most alive? When did you impact the lives of others? Maybe as a volunteer or even as a mentor? When did you overcome some sort of hardship in your life? All of these make incredible stories that will show that you have the track record that you need to succeed at business school and that you're going to meaningfully contribute to the unique diversity of the class. So spend a little time reflecting on your past and maybe even speak to a friend or an MBA consultant to help you look at your stories. I promise you have them and you just need to find them.
