How to Write an MBA Waitlist Update That Actually Gets You In

MBA applicants on waitlists should address their weaknesses and show concrete improvement in their update letter. Demonstrate genuine connection to the school and explain how you've strengthened your candidacy since the initial application.
Getting waitlisted doesn't have to mean that your MBA dreams are over if you follow these three steps when you're writing your MBA waitlist update. First, address your weaknesses. A lot of candidates, unfortunately, are waitlisted due to a problem in their application. It's important to identify what yours is. Maybe it's a low GMAT score or you didn't. Show how you can contribute to the school and include this in your update letter. Either show how you're addressing it, like maybe you're going to retake the gmat, or include the info that was missing before. Second, show improvement. Demonstrating that you're a more attractive candidate now than you were before helps a ton. Include info about promotions, raises, new projects, additional community involvement, or other bumps to make your profile more appealing. Third, show additional connections with the school. Share new information that you've learned about the school through a recent visit, additional research, or talking to more alums and current students. Also, include how what you've learned reinforces that the school is the best fit for you. It's also a good idea to write about how you can contribute to the school based on your experiences and background. Adding this can show a great fit with the school. By including these items in a concise and focused waitlist update, you'll have everything that you need to get off the waitlist. For more tips on how to get into your dream MBA program, follow me.
