How to Write Your Essay for Columbia Business School #1

Ellen walks through Columbia Business School's first essay question, breaking down how to state your short-term and long-term goals, provide career context with examples, and show genuine passion for your impact.
Hey guys, it's Ellen. And I think you've probably seen that Columbia has just released their essay Question one. I'm here to break it down for you. So the first thing that you're going to want to think about is that The Columbia essay one is pretty much a goals essay in 500 words. So the first thing you want to do is make sure that you clearly have your goals stated. Now, that doesn't have to come exactly at the beginning of the essay, but you want to make sure that you have very clear short term and long term goals. And when I say long term, they say dream job. But, but that means, you know, 10, 20 years down the line, essentially, where do you want to end up if your passions all go to plan? Second, context is really important here. You don't want to just start off your essay with your goals. I like to give a couple star format stories that show exactly why you're the right person to pursue these goals. So choose one or two examples from your career that prove that these goals are realistic and achievable for you. And then finally, make sure you show the impact and passion behind your goals. Doing that, you'll have a perfect essay.
