Is It Creepy to Research Your Interviewer

Before a job or school interview, research your interviewer to ask smarter questions and show genuine interest. Look at their professional background and published work, but skip their personal social media or you'll seem creepy.
Is it creepy to research your interviewer before an interview? This is one of the most common questions I get when prepping people for interviews at top schools like Harvard and Wharton. In a word, no. Looking up your interviewer on LinkedIn or their company site before the big day shows that you're prepared and that you're working to do your best in your interview. It also allows you to see any mutual contacts you might have and get some insider tips on what they're like, see any commonalities that you guys might have and prepare better, more thoughtful questions for them. In fact, I think it's almost rude if you don't look them up. I would avoid looking at their personal social media accounts though, since yes, this could be a little creepy. But getting a sense of their professional presence is an essential step in your interview prep, so don't skip it. For more tips to help you succeed on even the toughest interview, follow me.
