Ellen, a confidence coach, explains why self-deprecation isn't humility. Real humility means knowing your worth without broadcasting it. Self-putting-down just makes people believe the negative things you say about yourself.
Showing humility is a great way to build rapport with your colleagues and superiors. But many women confuse humility with putting themselves down. I'm Ellen, and I've spent the last decade coaching women to take up more space in their lives and careers. Let's get one thing straight self deprecation is not humility. Saying things like I'm the worst, even if you mean it as a joke, can project a negative image that makes it seem like you lack self confidence, authority, and even competence. Unfortunately, this can hold you back in your life and career. Humility, on the other hand, can mean throwing in a little bit of humor in your daily interactions to show that you're human and relatable. So pay attention about the way that you talk about yourself to others. Never put yourself down and go take up the space that you deserve.
