What should you wear to an interview? I get this question all the time because you want to make sure that you show up dressed to impress, but also fit the right format and tone of your interview. So the first thing is making sure that you know the setting of your interview. If it's formal, generally go more formal. If it's casual, go more casual. But what does that mean? There's a lot of nuance here for us to unpack. For casual looks, we can get away with a little bit more here. You could go with skirts, you could go with pants, you could go with dresses. I would recommend knee length or longer just because the office environment is still a little bit more formal than maybe something you'd wear to a party or to a bar. Additionally, I think you can get away with a wider range of colors here. You maybe don't want to wear something too over the top, but you could do a light pattern, brighter blue or a nice purple. When it comes to footwear, you can get away with a wide range here too. You could do heels, you could do flats, you could do loafers. As long as you're comfortable here and it generally feels more appropriate for an office setting, you're good. The one thing you need to avoid is athleisure. Just don't do it for business casual. It's better to stick to a more neutral color palette. You can never go wrong with black or navy here. We want to go a little more formal as well. So a knee length dresser skirt, maybe even a pencil skirt would look great. Dress pants as well. For a top, maybe a blouse, a button down shirt or a cardigan. Probably avoid tank tops here. For shoes, I think one of the main things that you want to do is look for oxfords, heels, closed toed flats. You do want to opt for a closed toed option here. For jewelry, you want to kind of keep it toned down and more casual and conservative. One thing that's important, blazers here are totally optional. For a formal environment, we want to go with darker colors here. In terms of what we want to wear, we want to go with a jacket and a dress or a jacket and a tailored skirt. For shoes, we want to go with heels or closed toed flats. We also want to keep jewelry very classic and understated. The most important thing is that you want to try your interview attire on before your interview just to make sure you feel comfortable and happy and confident in what you're going to wear. There is nothing worse than having it be an hour before your interview, putting on your outfit and realizing that you hate it.
