This is a YouTube video titled "Why Avoiding Uptalk is the Key to Establishing Credibility" created in November 2024. The content features a single speaker named Ellen who shares coaching advice on how women can improve their credibility by avoiding uptalk, explaining its negative impact on perceived confidence and offering practical tips for improvement.
Did you know that only 7% of what you actually say is responsible for establishing your credibility? I'm Ellen, and I've spent the last decade coaching women on how to take up more space in their lives and careers. According to a study by Professor Albert Mehrabian, 35% of your credibility comes from your tone of voice. And one of the tones of voice that signifies a lack of credibility quicker than any other is uptalk. Uptalk is when you make a statement, but rise your intonation at the end, just like I just did. Studies have shown that people feel that those who use uptalk generally lack confidence. This is awful for something like an interview where you want to project a confident image that proves that you're the right person for the spot. So if you find that you use uptalk, practice extensively before something like an event, meeting, or presentation to try to remove it from your speech. You can also join local clubs like Toastmasters to practice even more and get great feedback. So eliminate uptalk to prove that you're the confident, competent person who deserves to take up space wherever and whenever they want.
