This Mindset Is Keeping You Stuck

Shelley Young went from earning $1.8K a month as a nanny to $38K a month as a remote closer. She argues that free content keeps people stuck, and high-income sales skills require paid mentorship, community, and job placement. Investing in yourself costs money, but staying comfortable costs your future.

I am going to be breaking down today the most common mindset that I see that will be keeping you stuck in scarcity and not achieving your financial goals in remote sales. I went from a broke nanny making $1.8K a month to making $38K a month as a remote closer. I became top earner in the industry as a woman, and now I teach women how to do the same. And there is the one consistent trait that I see in people who see success compared to people who don't. And I just want to preface what I'm about to share with you is not, oh my goodness, the be-all and end-all. Every person who does this will see success and make all the money they want. Of course not. Other factors come into play— hard work, determination, getting the right support. So on and so forth. But this for me has stood out to be the biggest differentiator between seeing success and not seeing success. So let's get into it. We are talking about the free content trap. Going on your YouTube, going on your Instagram, going on your TikTok, and having YouTube University or TikTok University trying to teach you a high-income skill to pay you 6 figures. Let's just take a step back a moment, and you may wanna click off this video right now because you're like, oh, I don't wanna listen to this. And if you feel that way, I would encourage you stay a little bit longer because you may need a bit of a wake-up call, and I say that in the nicest possible way. If you really truly think about it in your mind, if you really, 'cause you'll be intelligent, you know, if you wanna be able to step outside of the rat race, step outside of the 9 to 5 and actually do something different. You're going to have something about you. You're going to be intelligent. So if you really truly think about it, do you honestly think to be able to learn a high-income skill and to make $10K, $20K, $30K a month and to have all these amazing things that you can just consume free content on social media and do that for free? Just be really, truly honest with yourself. And I get it. I started my first business, which was the equestrian clothing business, and I did just that. No mentor, no guidance, no help. I can do it. And the reason I have so much conviction with this is that literally crashed and burned. I also have girls in my inbox who have told me, I'm going to do this independently. And I'm like, of course, have, you know, I wish you the best of luck. And they come back to me like a year later and they're like, oh, heck, I didn't do it. I'm sitting in my 9 to 5. So this is not my personal experience. I've seen so many women in the same cycle, but that free content trap is an absolute killer because it's going to have you bouncing from one opinion to another opinion to this to that to the other. It's not actually going to give you what you need because let's be real, is someone actually going to give away all the information, all the connections, all the blueprints, all the scripts for free? No, of course not. People will give education, like I'm giving you education, I'm giving you very valuable education. But of course I have a training program for women where I actually give the blueprint. We're not going to give like every single piece of information on the YouTube channel because what's the point of the program, you know what I mean? And alongside that, it's the mentorship, it's the the feedback loop. It's the questions, it's the calls. There's so much more to it that the feedback loop is— that the content is not going to give you. So I really want you to think clearly about that. Do you truly think you can learn a 6-figure skill for free on YouTube? Because that is the trap a lot of people are in that's keeping you stuck. And when I really think about why this doesn't actually work, it's all good me telling you you can't do that, you have to invest in training, but you're probably thinking But why though? Why is this different? So I'm going to tell you. Sales is a skill that you have to learn. It's not finding that winning product, um, or, you know, creating this perfect website that you can just do with AI XYZ. It's learning a skill. Communication, tonality, cadence, open-ended questions, probing questions, assumptive questions. Like, there is so much to it, which is the skill side. Then we have the connections. So having the right industry connections, people that will actually hire you, knowing the recruiters, knowing where to find the jobs, not relying on these scammy Facebook job groups, actually having the right connections that's going to hire you into the job. And then after that is keeping the job. So you don't just get a job and then everything's great. It's making sure it's not a cold calling offer and it's actually going to make you money and it's actually vetted. And then once you're in there, it's actually doing your core reviews, knowing your craft, knowing all the different nuances to an offer, scaling your skill, scaling your income, negotiation. If an offer dies, what do you do? Like, there is so much to it. I could talk about it all day. And that is the reason doing it yourself doesn't work, because it is impossible for a beginner to have the skill, to have the connections, to have the feedback loop all independently. And I know that can be frustrating, and I know you're probably sitting here going, but I still could do it by myself. And Sure, give it a try. And I would encourage you to give it a try if you truly feel that way. And not that I want you to fail by any means. I want all women to be successful at something that they put their mindset to. But I'm not sitting here making this video just to try and convince you of something that's a lie. Like, I genuinely want to help women unlock the freedom that I have unlocked for myself. And that comes with a bit of a realization and a bit of a wake-up call that you actually do have to invest in yourself and learn a high-income skill to get the high-income return. And that brings me to investing in yourself. I know in the UK specifically, there is such a stigma to investing in yourself, and I get it because there's been so many course owners with like dropshipping, ecommerce, trading, that people have had a very bad experience, especially a couple years ago. There was a lot of information online and a lot of people buying courses that didn't actually serve them and didn't actually give them anything that they needed. I'm not talking about buying some online course with some modules. I am talking about seeking mentorship, one-on-one coaching, group coaching, community, job offers. Like, I am talking about the full 360 package that's actually— if you're going to purchase that program and that mentorship, you are going to be able to come out the other side with a job and be where you want to be. That is the difference, and I think that is the stigma. Investing in yourself is scary. It's betting on yourself when no one else is. It's going against the grain of your family and your friends and everyone who wants to keep you safe. It's doing the hard thing. Trust me, I know. I've been there, and now I help so many women take that step and invest in themselves, and every single one of them feels petrified. I'm going to be perfectly honest with you. It's not an easy decision. Every single one of them is like, Oh my goodness, I cannot believe I'm doing this. I feel petrified. But it's about if you want what you've never had, you've got to do what you've never done. And it's really about feeling the fear and walking towards it because we're taught, especially from an early age, if we feel fear, if we feel danger, run. But a different perspective. Do you think the entrepreneurs, the business owners, myself sitting in a place like this, do you think we did the safe thing or do we think we did the thing that scared us. It's always going to be the thing that scared us, and that is what is not spoken about enough. Every time I feel fear, every time I feel a little bit scared, I'm like, it's time to do it. We gotta run towards it. And it can be laughable, but at the start, at the very start of my journey, it was literally petrifying. So I get it. I know how you feel, but just know Comfort is on the other side of taking the step. It's not going to be before. It's impossible, because how are you going to know that you're okay unless you do it? Time, all that information is not going to be the lever. It's actually taking the step and finding out for yourself. And then at the end of the day, it's really weighing up the pros and cons of the cost of staying where you are and the cost of the investment. And like I said, it's not just an online course. You shouldn't just be investing in modules by any means. The cost of the investment is going to be a certain number that you're going to pay that you should then have access to consistent support, community training, jobs, everything you need to have a full transformation. And it's thinking about what is that transformation worth to you and what is the cost of staying the same worth to you? And I was speaking to a friend the other day who's actually in, just getting into the industry herself, and she was offered an amazing job. She's actually in my program. She was scared, scared of quitting her job and scared of staying the same. And we broke it down. I said, you really need to create a pros and cons list here because right now you feel immense fear. Your job's not too bad, you don't mind your income, it's okay, but you know you want more, you know you are capable of more, and you would love to be able to be at home with your dogs and not ever have to worry about money again. And that offer could basically give her that. Like, it's a very proven offer, lots of money to be made, um, obviously with hard work. And she was like, I know, but I, I love my team and I'm gonna miss them, and my income's not too bad, and I don't know if I want to work those types of hours. And it was literally just her comfort zone screaming at her, do not do it, stay where you are, staying where you are is perfectly fine. And it was quite fascinating to watch because I was watching that perspective. And obviously me, with hindsight, was like, just do it, you're going to be fine. But her in the moment was freaking out thinking, I just don't know if I'm actually capable of doing this, and I might as well stay where I want to be because it's safe. Now, thank goodness she decided to do the hard thing, and she's going to be starting the job on Monday, so it's all working out. But it's not easy, you know. The, the cost of staying the same can sometimes feel feel pretty all right. But when you really think about the future and the cost of what that's actually going to look like compared to doing the hard thing or making the investment or taking the risk, you have to really ask yourself, is it worth it? Like, do I want to stay the same or do I really deserve something better? And I promise you that something better will be better than you ever realized. But it just takes a bit of time. So, if you've been contemplating about getting into remote sales for a while, or maybe you've been watching my channel on and off and you're unsure and you feel scared and you're not sure what to do, if you really truly want that big sister advice, which is most likely why you clicked on this video in the first place, you've got to get it together. You've got to really take this seriously. You get one life, you get one opportunity to live it the best you can. Is staying in your 9 to 5 earning, you know, $3K to $5K a month with paid time holiday and no flexibility, is that truly the life you want? Is that truly what you feel you're worth? And is that all you feel you're capable for? If so, amazing, have that lifestyle, but feel confident with the choice you've made. But if you are back and forth and you've got that niggling feeling and you really feel like you're meant for more, then stop talking and start doing. I was such a talker for years. I would talk the talk but never walk the walk. And I have to tell you now that you have Stop talking the talk. You actually have to take that step. Scary? Yes. Worth it? 100%. And you're never going to know unless you do it. So I hope that's been helpful. It is your sign that you've just got to do it. Enough with the excuses. You deserve more for yourself than making excuses. I did. And thank goodness that I actually listened to myself because God knows where I would have been otherwise. So yeah, hope that has helped and I'll see you in the next one.
