Why You Keep Hearing 'I need to think about it'

Shelley Young says "I need to think about it" usually means the seller failed, not the buyer. Three things hide behind that phrase: fear of a wrong choice, not understanding the value, or no confidence to act. The fix is diagnosing emotions in real time, nailing down specifics, and making prospects feel safe.

Lets talk about why you keep on getting the think about it objection. The most common objection in the world. So let's talk about why does it keep happening to you if you're consistently hearing that? I need to think about it. This is not a money objection. This is a leadership problem. No one wants to talk about this. Most people blame the prospect. Oh, they're broke. Oh, they're not serious. Oh, they just wasn't a good fit. But when every call ends the same way, the common denominator isn't them, it's you. And I'm going to tell you exactly why this objection keeps on showing up. Because I had this for a while once in my sales career. I and it felt like the most impossible obstacle to overcome because what does it even mean? I need to think about it. What does it actually mean? You need to be able to know exactly what that means because that's going to mean different things to different people. And the one thing we can't do is just be like, oh yeah, no worries, just you go and think about it. We can't do that. We have to find the problem otherwise we are never going to make any money. One of the biggest mistakes I see sales reps make is leaving everything open ended. Okay. So they don't anchor the money, the time commitment, the partner, the fear. They don't tie these things things down. So of course your prospect's going to want to think about it. You've given them nothing solid to decide on. Right. Uncertainty creates hesitation. So let's break down. First things first, what does I need to think about it actually mean? When someone says they need to think about it, what they're really saying is one of these things. Number one, I'm afraid of making the wrong decision. Okay? So I'm afraid of doing something wrong and regretting it. Number two, I don't fully understand the value yet. So I'm not convinced that what you're selling me I actually need. And number three, I don't trust myself to follow through. I don't trust that I'm not going to buy this program and then just ghost and not do any of the work. It is super important to understand those three things and none of them are solved by thinking about it, sleeping on it, anything. Talking to mum, dad, cat, dog, nothing. Thinking about it needs to be solved then and there to actually diagnose the problem and to make the prospect feel safe. So first things first, let's break down how you can actually diagnose this problem and then solve it. Right? So the first thing that I want to cover and what I teach the girls in my program often is you are missing sales eq. Some people have sales eq. Naturally some people had to work on it. I would say I naturally had some sales eq, but I definitely had to work on honing it in. The other day I was on a live training call with my community and we pulled up one of my first ever closing calls. This was back in the day when I was selling in my masculine energy and it was a call that didn't close and I was objection handling a think about it. And we watched it back and I was shocked. And the girls were shocked too. And they loved to see like a different tape because now I sell so differently. And this girl was telling me I need to think about it. And I was giving her refresh frame after reframe, after reframe, having no care and consideration for how she was feeling and what was really coming up for her. I was using no sales eq. I was just trying to combat the think about it with logic. I was getting frustrated because I didn't know why she wasn't buying. She told me all the right things in the discovery. I felt like I asked all the right questions, but yet she told me she needed to think about it and it just didn't make sense. I so instead of me taking a step back and fixing and understanding like what's wrong? Like how are you feeling? I was just going in and in and in trying to close the deal. Sales EQ is the ability to sense what's not being said. Fear, doubt, past values. The voice inside the prospect's head that's telling themselves not to to trust themselves or the situation. When you don't have that emotional intelligence to identify that real time, you let the prospect hide behind the I need to think about it. And it's avoiding the real conversation. A prospect will tell you everything in the first 15 minutes of a sales call and it is up to you what you want to do with this information. Because a high level sales rep doesn't fight with objections. No one wants to fight with objections, contrary to all the Instagram reels you see of people objection handling. They don't work in real life. They're not real, they're fake, they're not real objections. They're made up ones with their friends or their family members just for entertainment purposes. But what I think people tend to forget is when you are really in it, when you are sitting across from a real person with real feelings and real emotions, you can't just give some fancy reframe that's just going to make someone hand over their credit card. You actually have to understand how this person is feeling, make them feel seen, make them feel heard and prevent the objection. So important, prevent the objection. That is the feminine way of selling. So sales pros, they will tie down the logistics early, they will read the emotional cues in real time and they will lead the conversation with calm authority. That is how to sell in your feminine energy. And most importantly, like I said, they will make the prospect feel safe when making a decision. You can absolutely practice this in your role plays. So if you're a brand new beginner, ditch the script for a minute and just focus on reading the prospect. Honing in on your eq, honing in on your intuition. And that is how you can build your sales eq. And if you are a woman looking to get into sales or if you're already in sales and you want to hone your skills, learn how to sell in your feminine energy and make the income of your dreams.
