I lied to myself until i made $100K a month

William Brown shares how he scaled to $100K monthly by ditching distraction. His method: one high-impact task per day, ranked priorities, and batching work like YouTube videos. Slow, steady progress compounds faster than burning out on everything at once.

Hey, guys, it's Will. And if you're watching this video, you probably have an info product business and you're making 3, 4, 5, maybe 15, 25, 35k per month. Ish. And if you're anything like I've been in the past, you're probably feeling a bit like, what do I do to scale? What is the real problem? You don't know what to focus on. You often feel distracted, especially if you live somewhere like where I am now, Bali or Dubai or one of these exciting places, maybe Miami.
And you just sometimes feel a bit lost. You don't really know what to do, when to do it, how to do it. And you're dealing with distraction, which is the opposite of focus. But you know you need to focus to do good work, to scale your business in the first place. If that resonates with you and you feel a bit like, what should I be working on? Or you kind of know what to work on it, but you almost just, it's just a bit daunting and there's too much to do. Oh, and you're just a bit like, where do I start? God knows I've been there over the years. I've been building and scaling info product businesses for almost eight years now. I've made almost $40 million. I might look young, but I feel old sometimes. And I've been through so much work and stress and distraction. But there's two or three things that I've learned that have massively helped me to stay calm.
Scale, further, beat distraction, focus more, and make more money with a lot more peace, some fluff on my hand. And I want to share those things with you in this video so that you can also do those things and focus and scale, grow your business and make more money and get to the heights that you, that you want to get to.
I want to share a saying with you. It's by far one of my favorite quotes. I don't know who first said this, but please, please, please take this to heart because it will allow you to make a lot more money in the long term. The saying is slow is steady and steady is fast. Now, in the past, I've been guilty of having like a lot of work to do, and I just get overwhelmed. I don't know what to do, don't know where to start. Maybe you feel like this now for something in your business or your life.
And one hack that has massively helped me is to just do one main thing per day.
Now, I learned this the hard way because for the first Few years of my, especially my first business that, if you don't know this, I grew it from 0 to 16.4 million over five years and then exited to private equity last year. Man. For the first three, maybe four years of that business, I just worked relentlessly seven days a week for five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten hours a day for years on end. And sometimes you've just got to get rid of friends, get rid of family, get rid of distraction and go in, just go all in. So there is a season for that. But it's hard, it's stressful, you can burn out, it can be very lonely, it can fuck up your life, your health, your relationships. So there is a season for it. But you just got to be a bit careful. But I found a better way. And the better way is exactly what I do nowadays.
And I just do one main thing per day.
So today's a Sunday and it is currently.
3:35 in the afternoon.
And today my one thing was to make one YouTube video, do the title, do the video, do the thumbnail and upload it and I'm done for the day.
And this is that video. And when I finish shooting this video.
I am going to go downstairs, I'm going to get in the pool, I'm going to have a cigar, I'm going to relax and I'm not going to do anything else. I might do a bit of WhatsApp, I might check my email, I might go in Slack and just check on the team and have a look at the calendar and just little things like that. But I only do one big thing per day. Yesterday, my big thing was to launch my upcoming profitable personal brand challenge thing that's happening on November 3rd. So my thing was do the Instagram stories, write and send an email.
Get it launched, get it out there, tell people about it, approve the website, just make sure it's all working and just get it checked, approved and launched. And it took about 90 minutes, maybe two hours yesterday. And that was my one thing. And my point here is, if you do just one thing, but every single day, I mean, for me, I like to work seven days. I just love what I do. So I just hate days off. I hate days off. I do a lot of relaxing, for sure, which I'll be doing this afternoon. But my point is, if you can just do one thing, one big important thing per day, it might be write a first VSL draft, it might be make a YouTube video, it might be spend one or two hours watching YouTube and learning and taking notes and watching Good videos and formulating ideas.
It might be one or two hours of thinking and planning, might be one or two or three hours of meetings. But if you just do one main thing per day, but every day, man, as the weeks and the months pass, you are going to get further ahead often than you would have got by trying to do everything. And I've done both. I've had periods where every day I would work all day, and I did that for months and years. And you get a lot done, but it's just a bit harder, it's more intense. Your health goes downhill, your relationships go downhill. It's not a healthy way of operating. This is a slowest, steady. Steady is fast way of operating where, you know, if you want to scale to real big heights and you want to not burn out and stay in the game and go far, this is a very good way to do that. And it gets rid of the intensity. And you know that feeling like, oh, I've got 17 things to do. God, I can't even start. This gets rid of that. Which leads me into the second thing that I want to share. And this has really changed my life and changed my business.
So I have a list of things that need to be done. Tasks, priorities, things to build, things to whatever. And I have the list. And then I rank the list in order of the most important, most critical things that will scale the business the most. The most important thing. And just having that list for me, it really calms me down because then I'm not thinking, do I need to do this? Should I be doing this? Have I got to do this? Or I didn't do this. And I don't get lost, and I don't get stressed and I don't get distracted. That list keeps me focused and it keeps me calm and it removes distraction. So, for example, the number one thing on my list right now is hiring and ramping and training and onboarding two new sales reps. That is my priority, it's my operations director's priority, and it's my sales team department's priority right now. Why? Because that's going to grow the business. That's going to allow us to scale. So that's number one. And when I come into the office and I look at that list, it's just a reminder. Is that done yet? Are we working on that? Are we making progress on that? Because that is the most important thing that's going to grow and scale the business. So my question to you.
What is the number one most important thing that you need to do next to scale your business.
If you're not sure, here's what to do. Get a piece of paper, get your journal, get your text app or your word doc on your computer and write down all the things that you have to do to scale your business. Right now it might be write ads, run ads, build a new funnel, make YouTube content, make short form content, hire a sales rep. Whatever it is for where you're at, write it all down. When you've done that, rank it in order of most impactful to least impactful.
And then whatever is most impactful. If it's like one task like write a vsl, write well, you can start on that tomorrow. So your day, one task for tomorrow might be write version one of the VSL doesn't have to be perfect, just write a full version and that's it, you're done. The next day might be go back over and refine that version.
The next day, if it's finished, might be to produce it or if it's not finished, it might be book a call with this copywriter to finalize it with a professional copywriter or something like that. And you just do one thing per day until that task is done. And when it's done, cross it off the list. Right, what's next? Make eight YouTube videos and schedule them in so that I'm ahead for the next two months. That might be the next thing. And then you might do two videos one day, two videos one day, two videos one day, two videos one day. And then four days later you've got your eight videos. You can schedule them in one per week. And I want to talk about this in a second on the YouTube scheduling side of things, schedule them in. You're eight weeks ahead, cross it off the list. What's next? And that list, it sounds simple.
But it keeps your mind clean, it removes distraction, it keeps you focused. And you can just do one thing per day and you slowly make progress towards your goals.
Now if you are thinking, but will, I don't know what to do to scale my business or you've got a problem and you don't know how to solve it.
Well, there's two, well, there's really, there's a few ways to solve that. So if right now you're thinking, I don't know what to do, watch the videos here on my YouTube channel, read my book or read other books from people that have solved that problem to learn how or get a coach, get a mentor, buy a coaching program. It doesn't have to be mine. I've got enough money. I'm not trying to get you to buy mine. I don't need you to. If you want to, great. But. But I don't need you to. That's. That's not my point. But if you don't know what to do, go and get the knowledge on what to do. And the best places to get the knowledge from. I mean, the best place is a coach or mentor who's done it. The second best place, I would say is books. The third best place I would say is YouTube, maybe masterminds as well. But those are the ways. So if you're thinking, well, I don't know what to do, go and learn what to do. Because I'm going to presume in this video you do know what to do, but you're struggling with doing it. And you're struggling with focus. You're struggling with distraction. Okay? Now one thing that I've learned in the past, I thought that.
I thought that more would mean more progress and more growth and more money, and I've learned that it doesn't.
So here's a lesson for you. If you're thinking more.
Will mean more money. So for example, if you, let's say I, I'll make more YouTube videos, my channel will grow faster and I'll get more calls and sales. It doesn't work like that. If you're thinking, I will make more short form, I'll go to another platform, I'll go to another two platforms and I'll definitely get more calls and more sales or more leads or more views or whatever. It doesn't always work like that. That's what one thing that I've learned. I've learned that less is actually more. I know that sounds cliche, that sounds a bit fruity, but this is really what I've learned is actually, I mean, I'll give you an example, right? In my old company, we had more than two times the sales reps that we've got now. And we had much more traffic and much more leads and much more calls than I do in this business. This business has about a third of the sales team, about a third of the traffic, about a third of the leads and calls. And we make more cash collected and more net profit with way less, about two thirds less.
Now. I won't go into. This is not the video for like sales team structure and tracking metrics and cold flow and stuff like that. But I just wanted to share that. And I've also learned that on YouTube as well. One great YouTube video per week is far better than two or three decent videos or lower quality videos. Because often when people do more volume, it's almost always lower quality because it's harder, it's more time consuming, it's more stressful, it's just not nice.
Now, I know that some of you are probably thinking, yeah, but will Hamalzi says, do more, work harder, make more content, blah, blah, blah.
Well, if you want to do that, do it for one or two or three or four months and let me know how that goes.
Or learn from my fucking mistakes. Because I've done that and for nine out of 10 people, it does not work. More does not equal more. So if you don't believe me, go try it. But you should just learn from my mistakes and save yourself the mess and the stress.
So that's one big thing that I've learned. So if you want to focus, you've got to remove distraction. And to remove distraction, you've got to slow down.
Do less, but do less with more focus and do less better, which is what you will be able to do, because you'll have less on your plate. And when you've only got one thing per day to do, you do that one thing very, very, very well.
And then you'll do it with focus. It will be better quality. The quality will therefore have more of an impact.
So it's funny, slow and steady is actually fast because most people.
Won'T do this. So doing this will actually give you an edge. And doing this, I often think one thing that I have in my mind is I want to outlast my competitors. So when my competitors eventually give up, or when my competitors eventually burn out, or when my competitors eventually move on to another shiny object.
I still want to be the guy that is just slowly putting out quality stuff and just slowly helping people and adding value. I want to be the one that lasts essentially and goes the furthest because of one thing really, which is compound interest.
So compound interest is a very good example because it's so slow and so boring and so difficult. I was actually, I was at the gym about two hours ago. I was in the sauna and there was some guys in there talking about how they were talking about, like, savings accounts, crypto, interest rates. And one of them said, yeah, I liquidated my crypto. I closed my savings account because what's the point? It would take years for it to be worth a significant amount. And so what's the point?
And I was thinking, well, yeah, that's why you're going to lose, because you don't have the patience. So, you know, we've all seen those, like, compound interest graphs. It's like, slow, slow, slow, slow, slow. Painfully slow. A little bit. Still mad slow. It's like, oh, God, is this ever going to work? Oh, I give up. But it was just before the big spike. YouTube is like that. Relationships are like that. Money and investment is like that. YouTube is like that. Hiring is like that. Scaling is like that. It's all like that. The only thing that's not like that is coffee. This shit will smack you around the head within about 15 minutes. It's great.
But scaling is not coffee. Okay, so those are a few things that I use to just make sure that I'm not distracted, that I'm not too stressed or stressed at all sometimes, and that I just slowly keep doing the right things all the time.
With focus, doing things well, doing things in a quality manner.
And that is how you remove distraction, focus, do great work. And through that great work, your business is going to scale as you slowly just keep chipping away. Just slowly and steadily keep chipping away at that list of things that you need to do to scale your business.
