2025 Starts Now: Shift Your Identity, Shift Your Life

Aaron Doughty explains why resolutions fail and how to make lasting change by shifting your self-image instead of chasing outcomes. He argues your subconscious identity, formed in childhood, runs your behavior on autopilot. Reprogram it through meditation and visualization in the 30 minutes after waking and before sleep, and you'll embody new habits effortlessly.

When you think of New Year's resolutions and these new decisions that you're going to make to either do something or not to do something, one thing you want to be aware of is what is the inner self-image you have from which you are making the decision? Because very often what people do is they make a New Year's resolution and it's like they make the New Year's resolution on the New Year's. But that resolution doesn't stick. People fall back into the old patterns, and what they're really falling back into when it comes to New Year's resolutions is, you know, 90% of people, whatever it is, high percentage of people that set New Year's resolutions, by the third week of January, it's like it's fallen off. One of the reasons this is is because the old self-image of of how someone views themselves is on autopilot. So when you make a new decision, there's a subconscious part of you that's like, this isn't who you are. Your inner self-image may be, I am someone that makes, let's say someone's like, my inner self-image is I work a 9-to-5 job I don't like and I make $50,000 a year. And then you're like, okay, my new year self-image is I'm gonna apply for other jobs, I'm gonna start my own business, this is what I'm gonna do. And you start to do that, but then you fall back into the old. A lot of times that old self-image is what is on autopilot, and that's what you're falling back to. You're falling back to that old self-image. So the thing to become aware of in order to really make self-image, to really make New Year's resolutions stick is what is your inner self-image? Because when people would ask me back in 2017, when I first got on YouTube and I started gaining momentum and I was making daily videos on YouTube for like 6 months, that's when my YouTube channel went from basically 0 to 100,000 subs. They'd say, how do you do this? How are you able to make daily videos? And I would think about it and I'd be like, it's easy. I don't have to think about it. I see myself as at that point a YouTuber. It's easy. Now when you look at someone that makes a New Year's resolution to lose weight, for example, think about it. Someone's like, I'm going to lose weight. I'm going to lose weight. If you lose something, what do you do? What do you try to do if you lose something? You try to find it because the inner self-image is of the overweight person. So you lose weight, it's like losing your keys. Where's my keys? And then you go look for your keys. Then you find your keys. Subconsciously, you found your keys. Where's my, where I lose some weight, I gotta find it. Where did I leave it? I left it in that unhealthy meal over there. I left it over there. So part of it is there's an inner self-image. And when you start going to the gym, by the way, at first you're like, this isn't who I am. I don't see myself as this way. It feels kind of weird. But then you do it with repetition and what eventually happens? It becomes natural for your self-image. You see yourself as a gym goer. After a certain period of time, and then it's easy. Someone that goes to the gym 3 to 5 times a week, how do you go to the— how do you develop the willpower to go to the gym every week? What are you talking about, willpower? It doesn't take any willpower to go to the gym when you love going to the gym. It doesn't take any willpower for me back in the day to make YouTube videos when I was loving the process of making videos. The thing is, is with New Year's resolutions, everyone's focused on an outcome. How can I get the perfect body? How can I get the money? How can I get it, Aaron? How do I get it? I just want to get it. I want to— I just want it because if I have it, I will feel better. But the thing is, when you fall in love with the process, because you fall in love with who you are becoming, but you fall in love because you enjoy the process. You don't have to try so hard. You don't have to will yourself to go every day because it's natural for your identity. So it's really only hard in the very, very, very beginning when you first start going to the gym and you're like, I'm sore. Of course you're sore. But eventually you do it, your body adapts, and then you start to like and enjoy the sore feeling. And then that sore becomes, I'm kind of high right now. I feel an endorphin rush. I feel more balanced. I know I'm using this whole weight thing as an example, but when you lose weight, you're losing a part of you. You're not changing the inner self-image. It is not like you wanna change your diet, for example, in 2025, Very simple thing. Define food that you put into your body as only good if it increases your energy. When I eat simple foods, I feel at my best. Simple foods, like 1 or 2 ingredient foods, whole foods. When I go out and eat, I can enjoy myself, but sometimes for 3 or 4 hours afterwards, I'll feel kind of a dip. I'm like, oh yeah, I only like to put foods in my body that feel good, that easy for me to digest. See, confirmation. But what happens is if you define it like that and you define and you see yourself as someone that eats healthy, that eats whole foods, that is mindful of their energy, it's easier. But if you see yourself as someone that's always eaten food that weighs you down, it's different, right? So what you want to become aware of in this whole dynamic is what is your inner self-image? Because subconsciously, you are doing everything you can to stay similar to that self-image. And that self-image, by the way, may have became safe. For example, you may, you may have an inner self-image that says, I'm the lone wolf. I feel more safe when I'm in my own energy, which may have brought you safety in the past because then there's less relational trauma that comes up with between people 'cause you're just in your little cocoon. But maybe you're realizing that that identity may have kept you safe is also keeping you separate. You see? So what is that maybe for you? There are some people for so long, they see themselves as like the single person, or they see themselves as like the one that works the 9 to 5 job they don't like. And maybe that's protecting you from stepping into the unknown. It's serving a purpose. This is the thing a lot of people don't see when it comes to New Year's resolutions and making a new choice about yourself. On one hand, you have this self-image that's on autopilot. The other thing to realize is that that self-image is keeping you quote unquote safe from the unknown, the scary, scary unknown where anything can happen. Oh my God, anything could happen. But the known, this limited identity, that's the known. So realize that with everything we're talking about right now, you have an inner self-image that is on autopilot. And when you become aware of what that inner self-image is, that's when you could start to make real powerful change. So don't just set a new, for 2025, don't just set a new New Year's resolution without also becoming aware of what is your inner self-image and what can you let go of that no longer is serving you. Everyone wants to bring on a new identity, everyone, or a new thing that they do because the thing they do is gonna get them to some other result. And if they get that one result, then they can feel different on the inside. So instead of New Year's resolutions where you make a resolution so that you can feel different about yourself, which will get you a specific result, then you could feel different about yourself. Instead, focus on who you become by embodying the energy and the emotions now. So if it's for 2025, you wanna feel more confident, excited or more passion. Well, you don't need to do all of these things to feel more passion. You can simply follow the thread of passion in your life now. You don't need to wait for the perfect relationship in order to feel connection and love in your life now. But if you believe you do, then guess what? You will wait. You will wait. You will work. You will work. You will try to get there. You'll try to get there. But guess what? It's all in your field now. The emotions already exist inside of your energy field. They're just waiting for you to tap into them. They're waiting for you to feel them. 'Cause whatever you feel is the kind of people you attract into your life. Whatever feel is the synchronicities, opportunities come into your life. As a reflection of that feeling. But the rule is I will only feel this once XYZ happens. So basically what I'm saying is focus on your inner self-image. A lot changed for me in 2017. I started to see myself as a full-time YouTuber, and within 6 months my entire life transformed. Even now, as I'm moving more into just doing live, a lot more live events, I think of the version of Aaron that's running multiple live events. What is that version of me? What things in my business do I do? What don't I do? What do I need to let go of doing that creates space for something new for me to do? What kind of people am I around that it really elevates my energy? I get excited. And conversely, what people am I around? Do I feel depleted? These are things that you become aware of that you can then start to tailor your life for. What kind of choices do I make as this version of me that's running consistent live events, There's a lot. There's a, when I look at and I use my imagination to imagine that, and also I'm embodying it by doing it. Like I just got done running a 2-day live event like a week or 2, like 2 weeks ago. What I'm able to do is I'm able to realize and get clarity from that state. And sometimes, by the way, what people do is they say, I don't have clarity with this new version of me. Well, in the state that you're in, you might not have clarity. Because you're also telling yourself the story of, I don't have it all figured out yet. But guess what? That state of I don't have it all figured out yet, and then believing you should have figured it out by now, is creating more resistance. And sometimes the thing that'll keep you stuck is you simply believe you're stuck. Maybe it feels familiar to be stuck and to not have answers. So understand that it's serving a purpose. It's helping you to feel uncomfortable emotions. Not uncomfortable emotions, emotions you're familiar with. This is where things get tricky, by the way, when we're looking at transformation. Think about this. Some of the things in your life that you want to be there and some of the things you don't want to be there are a reflection that allows you to feel familiar emotions. They're almost serving the purpose of keeping familiar emotions alive. So for example, if you have someone in your life that maybe doesn't know boundaries and you feel like they're a burden and they demand so much from you, And you say, why are they doing this to me? Well, that's also a story that is keeping the power outside of you because they're doing it to you. So there's probably some subconscious story there, but also they're serving a purpose. And that purpose is that there may be familiarized emotion and energy there that feels resistance. And if you were to feel it, heal it, and let that energy go, it would then serve the purpose to where you don't have to keep keep that energy alive. So it's almost like wherever you look through the lens of wherever you're looking, you're finding evidence of whatever energy is felt on the inside. But where people get tripped up is they get tripped up on the details of the content, but it's not about the content. So for example, if you feel guilty around setting boundaries with someone or you feel guilt about certain things in your life, Those things in your life are surface level that are allowing you to feel the deeper emotion of guilt because the guilt is unprocessed. There are some people that may be in the same scenario as you that don't feel the guilt, but the guilt is there because it's active in your field. The guilt also normally is related to responsibility. It says, I feel responsible. The lesson may be to not keep taking responsibility for that energy. So in 2025, this next year, what if you set forth in your imagination and you connected to a version of you that was more powerfully within your own frame, in your own frame of reality? Not taking responsibility for everybody else. Able to easily set boundaries. Also take on the motto for 2025, that's your stuff, not mine. If when you set boundaries with someone else and they feel tension and they don't like it, it's not your thing to manage. It's not your thing to fix. And if you can stand firm in that energy, guess what? You're not gonna feel like your energy's getting tapered around. But you say, "That's your stuff, not mine." It is your responsibility to set the boundary. It is your responsibility to own what is active inside of your field. Because ultimately the people you attract into your life, you're attracting them for a reason, even if it's a disempowered reason. But understand, you really start to gain your power back when you take responsibility for what's in your field, for what you are interpreting, for what stories you may have. Because you may say, that person came into my life, they're doing it to me. But you're the one with the story. Do you see who's got the story, right? The story is held, maybe it's familiar. Like when people say, now here's another thing in 2025, you really want your life to change this coming year, become aware of what your beliefs are around men What are your beliefs about women? What are your beliefs around mom? What are your beliefs about dad? What are the things that, what are the things that trigger you the most about men or women or mom and dad? And realize that in different areas of your life, you may have similar beliefs that are on autopilot that are bringing you situations and experiences that reflect back whatever those beliefs are. So realize that the first relationship you have in this reality is normally your parents, which can also represent authority. So what happens is whatever happens in the dynamic between us and our parents as kids, we internalize it. We assume they're right because they're authority, and what we do is we take that on And then we literally, because when we were kids, think about it, when we're kids between 0 to like 6 years old, we're just in a theta state of brainwave activity. Theta is where we absorb the environment and we absorb the beliefs and we model the belief of what our parents do. We model whatever we're told and we believe it. And then 6 to 7, 8 years old, we start moving into theta and alpha state. Alpha state still influences the subconscious mind, It's like when you're watching TV, you're in alpha state, still kind of relaxed, still infusing your subconscious mind. That's why it's called television. It's like programming. It's telling your vision, programming, whatever. I know some people say that. It's like sometimes that stuff's like a little, little out there for me, but it's programming nonetheless. And then around puberty, 13, 14, 15 years old, you start getting into a beta state. So then you're in theta, alpha, and beta state. Or one of the reasons in 2025 it's hard for people to shift their life is because most of the beliefs they have are back in theta state. They were created from 0 to 6 years old when they were absorbing the environment and creating their self-image for themselves. So they're trying to consciously say, I resolve to do this for 2025. I resolve to not eat sugar. I resolve to go to the gym. I resolve to do this in the beta state, in the beta brainwave state. Well, guess what? In theta state, you believe, I'm not worthy. You believe, this food makes me feel good. This is comfort. Whatever the beliefs are, they were created in theta state, in the deep level of subconscious. Now people are like, I'm going to change my life. I always fall back to the old patterns. Why? Because you're doing it not from the deeper level of your subconscious. And what I'm saying is go deep into the subconscious. How do you do that? The most powerful way I found to do that is to go into meditation. There's 2 or 3 ways. One, meditation. Go deep into your own subconscious. What are the metaphors you use? Like when people say, you know, I feel like I'm just carrying this baggage around everywhere I go. Baggage is a metaphor. They literally feel like they're carrying around baggage everywhere they go. They're carrying around baggage. But what if you realize that baggage wasn't yours? You simply picked it up. Maybe your parents' parents' parents had the baggage and gave it to your parents. And then you took the baggage. You're like, oh, I have this baggage. It's my responsibility. I'm gonna carry it with me everywhere I go. I'm gonna protect the baggage no matter what I do. I wanna be loyal to my family. And you carry that baggage. But what if instead you took that baggage and you let it go? How much lighter do you feel now? Probably feel a lot lighter. What if you took that bag and you just, you put it on a little dolphin and you watched it just carry it to the fifth dimension through the sea? What if that's what you did? Okay, bye-bye, bye-bye baggage, bye-bye. Well, guess what? The baggage starts to feel lighter, right? Who would you be without that baggage? Well, what I just did, by the way, by doing that whole thing is that's a metaphor. That's how your subconscious mind communicates. What is the metaphor for your own inner child? What is the metaphor for the story that you have about reality? And what you realize is you can influence your subconscious mind by looking at symbols. I'm a big fan of Carl Jung, union psychology, understanding these symbols of our subconscious. Another aspect is just meditation, going deep into meditation. And in meditative states, you get into theta state. And in theta state, you can reparent your inner child. You can send the past version of you love. You can make new choices about who you are. Have a very powerful effect on what you experience. Another thing is the 30 minutes of right when you wake up in the morning, the 30 minutes of right before you go to bed at night, that's the most powerful window to influence your subconscious mind. So when we're talking about making New Year's resolutions from the beta brainwave state, which is what most people do, and say, why am I not— why is nothing changing? Well, you made it from the level of consciousness that doesn't have much ability to transform the subconscious mind. If you want to transform the subconscious mind, a very powerful window of time is the 30 minutes of right when you wake up and the 30 minutes before you go to bed. Visualize and feel that you are this new version of yourself. That's the best time, by the way, to make New Year's resolutions. It's for 30 days. Do this for 30 days, every single day of the first 30 days of the month. Visualize and feel yourself as the version of you you choose to be with the self-image. Literally, as you're waking up in the morning, you start to become aware, start to feel of what it would be like to be in your most ideal reality. What is your body language like? What does it feel like? Make the choice in that state of consciousness. And then before you go to bed at night, as you're drifting off to sleep, visualize and feel the version of you you wanna become as well. That's the 30-minute window. And as you make the choice in that little window, you will have more influence over your subconscious mind than consciously saying, I wish I could lose some weight. I'm going to focus on losing weight and getting the right diet, and which a diet you do for a certain period of time, but then you always fall back into the old patterns, right? Because you haven't influenced the subconscious. So if you really wanna transform your life for 2025, That's what you do. You simply focus on making the choice that 30 minutes when you wake up in the morning, 30 minutes as you're going to bed at night, you visualize, you feel that you are the version of you you choose to be. Take on the identity of it, visualize it and see it through your own eyes and begin to embody that into your nervous system. Make the choice from that level of consciousness, but don't just do that by the way and then get up and go about your day eating like crappy food or whatever the images you're changing. Make choices as that version of you, but recognize that your biggest influence over your subconscious mind is in a theta brainwave state. And you are in a theta brainwave state when one, you're in meditation. That's why I'm a huge proponent of meditation. That's why at my live events, we do a lot of meditations. And then the other aspect of this is when you're going to bed at night and we wake up in the morning, You're naturally drifting off in that theta state anyways. That's the window. It's the magical window. Begin focusing on that magical window of time. Make the choice about who you choose to be, and that's when your life will really change. Change the inner self-image. Because everything in my life has shifted over the last, like, 8 years I've been on YouTube. I started to see myself as a full-time YouTuber and I stopped, I had to stop being a 9 to 5 job goer. My values literally shifted from 2016 to 2017. 2016, 9 to 5 job, selling women's shoes, going to work, having this schedule that I had to show up for, not wanting to be there, valuing getting a weekly paycheck. And then instead I had to realize instead of someone telling me what to do, I have to tell myself what to do. I have to take leadership. I have to take ownership. And I started to make videos every single day on YouTube because I saw myself as a YouTuber. Within 3 to 6 months, my YouTube channel went to over 100,000 subscribers. I was able to put my 2 weeks in at that 9-to-5 job, and my whole life transformed. Why? I changed my inner self-image and started to embody that version of me. And then even now, this year, more live events— there's a different version of me that's evolving as I'm doing more and more live events. But I'm taking on the identity with it. That's my inner self-image now, my inner identity, which means letting go of some of the things that have brought me so much security for so long, which is a certain like almost 9-to-5 job mentality around creating content. You have to create space for you to become this new version of you. But the way you create space is by letting go of the old image, letting go of the old versions of you. Does this make sense? How do you change the inner self-image? You first off become aware of what your inner self-image is, and then you start to see yourself differently. The meditations are a way of changing your inner self-image. Like, think of even you watching this right now. What is one thing that used to be a part of your self-image that now is no longer a part of your self-image? Like, I used to smoke back in the day. I used to drink back in the day, and my self-image included that. I'm a smoker. I drink occasionally. That was my self-image for years. I became aware of it, and then I also realized that part of the reason I was doing that was to numb myself from feeling certain emotions. So instead, I I took on the value of embracing meditation and feeling the uncomfortable emotions that came up. Within a very short period of time, I stopped smoking. Eventually I stopped drinking. I started valuing being sober and the, this being present. My values changed. That's another way you change your identity, by the way. You change your values. What do you value? Like if you were to bring more, if you were to say, I'm gonna be more adventurous, I want more variety, and you put that into your identity, how would that change the decisions you make? Like I now view myself as somebody, I travel a lot. I was in California for 3 or 4 months. Now I'm in Vegas for a couple days. Then I go to Miami. I'm going to Sedona for a week. And then I go to Miami for 3 months. And then after that, I don't even know where I'm gonna go. I'm going to figure it out. May eventually do some more international travel, but I view myself as freedom, variety. I like variety. I like freedom. I like, you know, the get up and go. I like new experiences. I like new food. Like, that's, that's a way of shifting identity. Start to take on new values. So you change your identity. I also have in High Vibe 101, which is my free course, I believe there's videos in there on inner self-image. I think I talk about identity in there. It's a free $1,000 course for free called HighVibe101. The link is in my bio, or you just HighVibe101, all one word. It'll DM you the, whatchamacallit, the link. Haha, it's funny. Someone says, I saw you hauling through Planet Hollywood yesterday and wanted to say hi, but you were hauling, lol. That's cool to see you in real life. That's funny, yeah, I went from, you know, I thought I lost my AirPods. I know some of you're hearing that right now. You're like, Aaron has AirPods, they're Bluetooth, they're gonna completely just demolish his vibration or whatever. Like other people believe that. That's your belief, okay? I wear AirPods, whatever, okay? I don't think I've turned into, I haven't grown like some third eye, I don't know, like it's not, my third eye's not permanently calcified because I listen to AirPods. That's my belief. Maybe your belief is different. Honor your belief. But anyways, I thought I lost my AirPods. So I was like, I'm going to dinner with, I was going to dinner with a YouTuber friend and I was like, just kind of got into town, got settled into my hotel. I was like, I need to go to the Apple Store at the Caesars Forum Shops. So I was like walking all the way to the Caesars Forum Shops and there's all these freaking roadblocks of like sidewalks that are closed. So, and it's breezy 'cause it's a Sunday night. So I'm like, I was like walking fast to go all the way to this Apple store to find out that if I use this app on my phone called Find My or whatever, it showed that my Apple AirPods were in my luggage. I'm like, I didn't lose them. I thought I left it. I thought I lost them in LA. So instead of buying AirPods, I was like, oh, I get to come back and find them. 'Cause you push a button and it makes this magical noise. Basically, I found my AirPods in a shoe. Somehow I put them in a shoe that I haven't worn in a while. Found my AirPods. Sometimes whatever you're looking for, you already have, okay? But also I was in kind of like rushing to get back with, to meet up with my friend, but also I was like excited to find my AirPods and I found my AirPods and now I will continue to calcify my pineal gland as much as possible by listening to Bluetooth, okay? But anyways, where are they getting with that? Oh yeah, someone saw me. I was hauling, I was hauling, I was in a flow state. I was just trying to get around. There's so many groups of people. I was like, man, this is stimulating. It is stimulating to be here in Vegas. You guys want to see? Like, look at that. It's like, that's Vegas. Cool view, right? But that is, that is the I'm here for 4 days chilling, and then I go to Costa Rica soon too. I'm looking forward to that. I want to surf. I wasn't surfing as much in California the last couple weeks because the way it was, the water was so cold. It was so cold that like you get an earache because it's that cold. Pretty cold. Anyways, I'm kind of just rambling now. It's kind of fun to ramble, but So anyways, changing your identity in 2025, kind of everything that I've been sharing, changing your values, the window of when you wake up in the morning before you go to bed, meditations for like healing your inner child is very powerful. Just becoming a— what is your inner self image? Your current, your inner, what is my self-image? Look around, look around. What is currently in your life? You say, okay, so you might have an inner self-image that you make $50,000 a year. Well, you make $50,000 a year, that's part of your self-image. You might always attract certain type of relationships. Your self-image is equal to the kind of relationships you attract or don't attract. And then you become aware of that and realize your self-image can be changed. It's easy to change your self-image when you make a new choice about who you are, but look at your values. What do you value? Imagine bringing in more variety, more adventure. Imagine bringing in more freedom. Imagine bringing in more love. Embody it. How can you embody it now? You don't have to wait. And that's when things really shift. So anyways, the Miami live event is going to be announced soon. We're figuring out the exact dates right now. I'm thinking it's going to be around Valentine's Day weekend. Be in Miami 2 days. Other than that, I'll probably be doing a 3-day High Vibe 101 challenge, like, like a free thing that I do. Might be like the second or third week or the third week of January. Be like a whole virtual live event. That's gonna be fun. One day will be on awareness, one day will be on letting go, one day will be embodiment. Be the middle of January. Other than that, I'm just rambling now. Other than that, thank you all for being here. Had tons of fun. I also just got a YouTube video. It's one of the reasons I go live now. Is it gives me content. Haha. You were all an experiment to get me a YouTube video, but also I got to have fun with you and you got to see a YouTube video live. Okay, so you guys probably won't rewatch the YouTube video because you were here. You got it IRL, in real life, right? Any Los Angeles events in January? Nope. I probably won't be back in LA for till April, and I will be doing more events in LA for sure. Other than that, I hope you guys all having a fantastic day. I'm going to go to the gym. There's a gym here I'd really like to go to. I'm going to go there. I'm going to do a leg day. It's going to be fricking epic. That's it. Okay. Other than that, I hope you all have a great and fantastic, incredible day. And as always, peace, much love, and namaste. If you want to learn how to transform your identity from the inside out, I did a free workshop that is on YouTube. On completely transforming your inner self-image. It includes a meditation, step-by-step how to do it. I'm going to go ahead and link it right here. This video is a workshop that will show you how to create inside-out transformation.
