3 Steps to Finding Your Purpose and Passion in Life

Aaron Doughty walks through finding purpose in three steps: notice what excites you physically, try new things and follow that momentum, then refine based on what works. He used forensics debate to discover speaking was his calling, then built a YouTube channel while working retail before going full-time.

Welcome back to another video. My name is Aaron and I help people expand their consciousness. Now in this video, I'm going to be sharing with you how to find your purpose using 3 simple steps. Now this is something that people have been asking on my YouTube channel. They've been asking questions in the comments. I've heard it a couple of times. How do I find my purpose? How do I know what I'm supposed to be doing in life? And what I wanted to do was in this video to give you some practical tools that you can apply that can really be powerful for becoming much more aware of what your passion really is. Now with me, for example, it's something that I kind of had a seed that was planted when I was in high school because I did forensics debate. Now first off, let me tell you that when I started to do debate, the reason I did it was just to get out of my fear of speaking in public because When I was in, was it, I think it was my freshman year of high school, I did a presentation in front of class and I completely forgot what I was supposed to say. Like I got in front of the class, was starting to do the presentation and just like something wiped out my brain and I couldn't think of what to say. And it was just this awkward silence and it was something that I knew I wanted to push through. So sophomore year of high school, I decided, I said, hey, I'm gonna do forensics debate. And what happened was, is the first couple competitions, because it was something that you would go to school for, you go to class too, and then you'd have competitions once a month. And the first competition or two, I wasn't good at all and it was very nerve— I was very nervous about it. But eventually what happened is I started to really like become passionate when I was speaking. There was just— I don't remember exactly what it was, but all of a sudden I started to speak very passionately and within maybe a month or two of starting to understand how to speak like that, I started to win. I would win. Trophies or I would win a place at different tournaments and stuff for certain debate categories or certain type of topics that we were doing. And it was something that from that point going forward, I knew I was meant to be speaking for a living. Now, I wasn't in sharing the kind of information I share on my channel. It wasn't as much as the spiritual awakening side of it, but I at least knew that I was meant to be speaking. Like that was something that kind of planted a seed and I just kind of knew it. Now The content of what I'm speaking of course came later in life, came when I had more of like an awakening of understanding more of like how my beliefs create my experience, how I understand like these complex ideas that I like to break down in very simple understandings and then share with you guys. But it came from understanding also that I had to get out of my own way. So part of this video is about understanding that many times we continue to tell ourselves that I don't know my purpose, I don't know my purpose, and guess what happens? Is our purpose may be in our subconscious. Our purpose, most likely there's a general gist of what we should be doing or what we're passionate about, but we block it out with those definitions of saying, I don't know my purpose. Now let me ask you this question. If I asked you what your purpose is and you say, I don't know my purpose, what if I were to say to you, you do know, you just have to know that you know it. You just have to start to drop the definition that you don't know it. And go within and you'll start to get more answers. Sure, you know your purpose. Sure, you know the sensation of passion and what that feels like, and you can start to realize there's certain things in your life that if you look at, you feel a certain way when you do it. You may realize that it's helping other people. Maybe you realize it is very general. Maybe it's like doing this specific thing, like you enjoy graphic design, you enjoy maybe certain parts of like even just putting your Facebook together and doing the graphic design for it, that you felt passion for doing that and then helping your friends do it or something small like that. This doesn't have to be some extravagant big thing. It could be simply following the carrot on a stick. Follow the feeling of passion. Now this is why the first step has to do with simply asking the question, what am I passionate about? What would I love doing? What do I fear the most? Because for me, It was speaking at the time. I feared speaking the most, but I realized that the moment I started to do it, I started to fall in love with it. The fear was nothing more than a mental construct. It was something I was associating with pain, but the moment I pushed through it is the moment I went a little bit deeper. Now the thing I want to offer to you is if I ask you the question, what is your passion? And you say, I don't know, challenge that answer from yourself. Of course you know. Of course you know the sensation of passion. Of course, if you keep asking yourself the question, you're going to find more evidence of it. The way our RAS, the reticular activating system in our brain, works is whatever we focus on will grow. If we focus on the perspective that I don't know my purpose, guess what? We're going to continue to see a reflection in our life that we don't know our purpose. But if we simply change the definition and we start there and we start to ask the question, our mind will start to look for the answer. And what we can also do is go within the feeling. Whatever we feel will be an indication of the direction that we want to go in. So what feels good to you? What do you enjoy doing? What if you didn't get paid to do, would you like to do anyways? And you can start to realize what that is. And you can also tailor this with understanding how can I add value to other people? Maybe it's just simply adding value towards entertaining other people. It doesn't have to be like you actually do something and you give someone something. It could be something as an emotion. You know, a lot of my videos is information, but the main thing I like to convey to people is an emotion of awareness and emotion of understanding and feeling the confidence for who you are at a deeper, deeper level. And my intention is to share that state with you because I am in that state of being and I believe that Through these videos, my intention is to give you that state of being so that you can find it within yourself because you have the ability to tap into that anyways. Now, the idea behind this is first off to simply ask the question. If you say, I don't know the answer, challenge that and simply tell yourself, I do know the answer. And as you go through your daily experience, you'll start to see a reflection of what that could be. Now, the second step I have for you has to do with taking Action and following your passion. Now what this means is actually trying things you've never done before. It means paying attention to the feeling inside your body when you do certain things. You'll realize that in this moment right now, there's a number of things you could be doing. If you simply follow the thing that's the most exciting thing that you could be doing right now, that will lead you to something else that will be like a snowball effect that begins to gain momentum and you'll start to see more and more of a reflection of what you could love to to be doing, and that's that carrot on a stick I was talking about. As you simply decide that you're going to do that and you decide in every moment what's the most passionate thing you can do, it begins to leak into other areas of your life. It becomes a state of being that you exist in, that you practice, that then will lead you to the answers of what you're looking for. Now, this doesn't have to be some extravagant thing. Right now I'm excited about going skydiving. I mean, it could be. But it could just be, what is the most exciting thing I could do? What's the most passionate thing I could do? It could be something calm and peaceful, but exciting underneath it. It could be, I want to go take a bubble bath. I want to go read a book. I want to go call my friend and I want to meet up for lunch with him or her. It could be so many different things, but if you ask yourself the question and you start to exist in that frame and you're authentic to who you are, that will lead you deeper and deeper into knowing what you could be passionate about. Now the third step is simple and it involves revising and revisiting those paths of what you're passionate about. Now what this means is that if you start to do something, maybe you're like, oh, I'm going to try doing this whole graphic design thing. You could get online and become part of like Fiverr or ODesk or something and freelance for people and do graphic design. But what you might find is that you start doing it and then you like a certain aspect of it. Maybe you like only doing this type of graphic design. Or maybe you decide, you know what, this isn't what I'm most passionate about. I'm going to try doing this over here, which is similar to graphic design, but maybe has to do more with like signage or something to do with knowing how to do certain type of marketing for people or even for businesses. You see, as you start to take action, you will start to find things that narrow down what you could be passionate about, and at the same time you become very aware of that body awareness, become aware of how you feel. And the more you start to do that is the more momentum you build and that will leak into other areas of our life. Now at the same time, get to the core of who you are. The reason I say this is because many times our parents, many times our peers might have pressured us into the conditioning of the past of believing that what we love to do isn't something we could make money on, isn't something that we could do for a living. Well, the truth is, is now we have the internet and now there is something that you could be passionate about that could leak onto other people, could make other people interested in you, and then by following that, there's ways of monetizing it. There's ways of doing things that we haven't even thought of yet because there's so many different opportunities when it comes to online and connecting to millions of people through the internet. So the idea is to start to question those beliefs. Maybe you are passionate about certain type of, uh, creating music, but your parents told you you can't make money doing that. Or maybe you like to write and people told you you can't make money doing that, or you're going to be one of those struggling authors. That's when you could start to get honest with yourself and realize you could publish a blog and you could do daily or weekly posts on it that could build your audience. You could do things when it comes to music. You could start to create and do creative type freelance for music, for creating beats for people. You could start to get together and create music with your friends. As you start to take action, realize you will modify what exactly you're passionate about. Maybe you realize, you know, I only really like the editing part of it. I'm going to become an editor for this producer. I'm going to start to help people edit their YouTube videos. You know, there's so many different ways we narrow it down, but the only way we're really going to do that is if we first off ask the question, then secondly, we simply take action in doing things, and then thirdly, we revise it and we keep on refiguring out what that could be. We keep on revising it. And towards knowing the details. And the more that we know the details, the more we become aware of what we could really be passionate about. Now, this is the process that I use. I simply decided I was going to create a YouTube channel. I was going to try out different ideas when it comes to the topics I share. I was going to try out doing a different type of speaking techniques. I was going to just simply take action and find out more and more of how I enjoy doing that, following that feeling. And the more that I've done it, the more I've realized that I can turn that into something that I love to do for a living. Now also realize if there's anything that you want to learn how to do full-time, realize that if you treat it as something that's full-time, eventually it will become your full-time. I worked for probably the last 7 or 8 months. I have worked at a full-time job selling shoes at a designer store called Barney's New York here in Las Vegas. And I have been doing this for the last— I mean, I've worked there for like 3 or 4 years now, but I've been doing my passion for about a year and a half now. It only started really growing back in January or February when I went daily and I started doing daily content. I had to work from about 7 or 8 at night till about 2 or 3 in the morning every single day because I did daily videos for the last about 6, 7 months, and just now it's becoming my full-time job. Job. It's something I put my, my 2 weeks in last week. I got 1 more week and it's going to be my full-time thing. The idea is that what you can do is start to do what you love to do. Do it as often as you possibly can. I just simply knew that if I created a video a day and I treated it like my full-time job, that feeling would become something that grew in my life and become something that then became a part of who I am.
