Changing Your Past to Create Your Future (Powerful Technique)

Aaron Doughty explains how memories are temporarily unstable each time you recall them, making them changeable. He teaches a visualization technique to strip emotional charge from painful memories by altering their sensory details, then extracting a lesson to reframe what they mean. Your present emotional state shapes which memories surface and what future you attract.

Welcome back to another video. My name is Aaron and I help people expand their consciousness. Now in this video, I'm going to be sharing with you how to change your past to then create your future. Now this is going to involve a very powerful technique that you can apply to really let go of a lot of the emotional baggage that might be weighing you down. Down in the present moment, and when we come to understand that the reflection that we get in our life is a reflection of who we are being, and that part of who we are being, if it is from the baggage and the emotional trauma that we went through, or just reference experiences that we derive meaning from, will end up then in the present moment influencing us in a way that we don't prefer, which ultimately then through being that version of us will then get a future of that momentum. Now, first off, I just want to clarify that in actuality, there really is no such thing as the past or the future other than what we can conceive of in our own mind. We can't actually experience the past again unless it's some pattern that we're reliving, but we're doing it in the present moment with a little bit of new circumstances to it, and the idea of the future is nothing more than something that we pull from from our imagination based upon the analyzing of what we're doing in the present moment and the momentum that we have going. So understanding this, the power of this is knowing that who we are being in the present moment is going to determine what reflection that we get in our life. So this is about understanding our identity and how we can really come to understand the memories and how they affect us in the present moment. In recent times, and by recent I mean like in the last 2 or 3 years, they've come to understand something in neuroscience that has to do with the way that we view past experiences that happened to us. So the way that we see our past experiences, every time we have a memory or a reference experience, what we do from that point of view of neuroscience is we take the memory out of the memory banks We bring it in front of us and we change it a little bit before we then put it back in the memory bank of the subconscious. Now the power in knowing this is being able to see that every time we pull that memory out, we are somewhat changing it and we are laying over it a narrative about what happened. We're putting in emotions to it, we're amplifying certain parts of it, and therefore in the present moment right now, that past is being brought into who we are being and is affecting us, and then also the momentum of what we will experience in the future. So the power in knowing this and the technique that I really want to give to you is knowing how we can apply what is called NLP to it, which is neuro-linguistic programming, and being able to apply this technique so that that story that we overlay it over and over again, we can learn to change it, to learn from it, and then to simply decide that it no longer serves us. So the way that we go about this is we would get a memory that is very dominant in us, maybe something that we think about quite often, and what we can do is we can pull out that memory right now. If you want to do this exercise with me right now, it can be something that dramatically changes your life, really allows you to let go of that emotional baggage. And what you can do is you can do this more powerfully later in visualization, but this is the general idea. Take the memory of whatever you want to let go of, something that is a reference experience, maybe someone calling you a name or some experience of maybe for me, one of them was talking in front of class and completely giving a presentation and forgetting exactly what I'm supposed to say or anything that I'm supposed to say and just blanking out. It was a very embarrassing experience that I had. What I learned to do is I would look at that experience that I had, that reference experience that would replay over and over in my mind every time I would give a presentation. Or speak in front of people. And what I would do is I would look at that narrative, I would look at that memory, and what I would do is use NLP to change it. Now what we do for this is you bring that memory up, you feel the emotions of what that memory brings you. Then what you do is you start to overlay a new story over it. Now this could just be visualization of viewing it if it was something that was very serious looking at that story and playing it in a cartoon. Maybe you imagine it in like a Family Guy cartoon, and what you do is you start to put a sense of humor into it. You could then also begin to make it black and white. As you begin to make it black and white, you start to connect to it a little bit less. What you could do is then hear the voices in that memory, and what you could do is make it high-pitched like they were on helium, or what you could do is make it very distant to where you could barely hear what they were saying. And as you begin to influence and put these waves into the memory, what you then begin to do is it begins to lose its power over you in the present moment. Now, another part of this is knowing that what we can also do is learn from that experience. Now, maybe we had an experience where we said something we weren't supposed to say and we regretted that experience. What we can learn to do is to accept that it happened and to learn from that aspect of it. So it's not just about changing the story and trying to rewrite it. It's about also deriving the meaning from it that we can use in a positive way. So now I've reframed that whole situation into me having even more of a desire to learn how to speak in front of people. Because of that, that's influenced the direction of my life in a powerful way, and that is something you can apply towards any of the memories that you have. All you simply have to do is bring that memory in front of you, decide to lay it into maybe black and white. Maybe you start to disassociate from the heaviness of it. What you can then do is reframe it to seeing it from a neutral point of view. See it simply as is without overlaying a story into it. And as you begin to do that, you start to dissolve the meaning of that experience and it no longer has so much power over who you are being in the present moment. Now understand that who we are being in the state of being that we're in will influence which memories we connect to in the past and which memories and visualization that we have for the future. So for example, if I'm in a very like a flow state or I'm feeling very good, something great just happened, or I just put myself in that state of being. When I have momentum in that state of being and I try to remember something that was also in that state of being or something that also was positive, it's very easy for the neural network of my brain to connect to that because of the momentum and what is firing in my mind. Now on the other side of that, if you were to ask me about something negative, it would be much harder for me to remember it, or a negative situation or memory be much harder for me to remember it because of the momentum and the neurosynaptic connections in my brain are so different from that experience. Now the idea behind this is your state of being is influencing what part of your past you connect to and what part of the potential futures you experience. So another part of this is simply deciding that you can choose your own state of being. It's really just a simple choice, and it's knowing that as you choose to give yourself the emotions that you prefer to feel in the present moment, that's what's going to really determine what you experience and the future. Now to do this, you can simply imagine the kind of person that you prefer to be, and as you begin to simply know that you have the ability to give yourself and flood yourself with the emotions that you prefer by deciding that that is just who you are, you then start to embody more of that state of being. You start to resonate with that version of you, and you're more likely to then embody the future aspects of that and therefore see the reflection in your life of that experience. So this video is really about the simple technique of being able to decide to change your story. Look at the reference experiences that had the baggage over who you're being in the present moment. Simply decide that you can change it with this simple decision. Use those visualization techniques if they work for you. Decide to let it go and give yourself permission right now in the present moment to feel the emotions of already having what you want. Begin to resonate with that version of yourself and you will eventually begin to experience it and what we call the future. So with that being said, I hope you guys enjoyed this video.
