How to be Yourself 100% (and stop caring what people think of you)

Aaron Doughty describes a spiritual shift around 2011 that let him stop taking Adderall and embrace being different. Instead of asking how to be liked, he started asking how to express himself 100%. The paradox: detaching from others' opinions actually draws more genuine interest.

How to become completely okay with who you are, how not to be attached to what other people think, and how to really just accept yourself 100%. Now, this is a video I've been wanting to talk about for a while. I've been wanting to create it because it was a story that I had that I want to share with you guys that really changed my perspective about what people think about me and how to just remain in my own energy field rather than needing other people to validate me or to agree with the ideas that I have to share. This comes from a story of 4 or 5 years ago in 2011 or 2012 when I went through my spiritual awakening. Um, it completely changed the way that I am. It completely changed the, uh, kind of the way that I carry myself, how I thought about the world. It completely changed all of that. I went from somebody that had, you know, very spontaneous— I'm still kind of spontaneous, but spontaneous ADHD, not grounded energy at all, all of a sudden to having these realizations and this, um, feeling that raised my natural set point. I started to feel better more of the time. And then another side effect of that was that I became much more grounded and I wasn't so all over the place. I found myself able to focus. I went from taking Adderall for ADHD to completely giving that up. You know, there are certain things about me that completely changed my perspective and completely changed how I showed up in the world. So naturally, you know, everyone, a lot of people would ask me whether it be friends or family and they would say, what happened? Why are you so different? And of course I was so excited about the spiritual awakening aspect of it that I wanted to share those. Ideas. So I talked about how I became aware of that, you know, we're immortal spiritual beings having temporary human experiences, that we create our own experiences based upon our thoughts, emotions, actions. And when I started to share these ideas, I realized that almost right away there was a strong resistance to them. It was almost like, um, it was weird or it was, it was too eccentric a way of thinking. And because of that, it kind of pulled away and made a lot of people think that there was something wrong with me or like I was almost crazy. You know, I remember my dad. Was almost like, what happened to you? Like, did you, you know, he almost thought I did drugs or something like that, you know? And the funny thing was that there was no drugs at all. I was just meditating and I was more just high on life because I was so excited with the kind of information that I had come across. Now, same thing kind of happened with friends, you know, slowly but over time it was like there was more and more of a, um, there wasn't much understanding there and it was like it was harder to relate to from that point going forward. And while I'm still in contact with a lot of my friends today, but The idea is that, um, what I've learned how to do is to really just detach from what other people think and almost not sell it. I think when I was first on my spiritual awakening journey, um, I had such a desire for other people to know about it because, you know, understand that like when I go from this to this and I start feeling really good all the time, of course I want other people to feel that good too. You know, even if I see people that are feeling pain or going through emotional trauma, I want them to feel the same thing. So it was almost like I was taking all that information and I was hoping that they would come to understand it more so that they could get the similar type of effects as me. Instead of me thinking that I was like weird or something like that, what I did was I reframed that idea of going from the idea of being different to more of the different being a good thing, the uniqueness being a good thing. And I started to look at it from that point of view. I started to kind of accept the idea that, you know, I know this kind of information. I also knew that it's part of my purpose in life. Like, one thing I meant to do in life is to help more people claim their power back and to understand that they're powerful beings that can create anything they want in their lives. And because of that, it reframed the purpose behind it and it made me understand and become more comfortable of it and to really just accept it more. And this is the funny paradox of it, is as I detached myself more and more from what people think, It's almost like more and more people have a desire to talk to me or to learn about it. You know, people 4 years ago that thought that what I was going through was kind of in a certain level just kind of weird or crazy are now asking me questions about it. You know, you know that meditation thing that you do? Can you help me learn more about it? Or, you know, I was reading this or I saw this video that you posted and, you know, it kind of has allowed more and more people to almost see that I'm just doing my own thing. I'm grounded in my own energy. I'm not dependent upon what anybody thinks and because of that there's more likelihood of people actually absorbing the information that I am making. You know what I've learned how to do is to really embody, believe what I'm talking about, to live it. And as I live it, it's like there's more of people desiring to know about it anyway, but it's not from me telling people or trying to sell these ideas. It's about just me being who I am and sharing it with the people that will and want to resonate with it. So what I want to encourage you to do is to understand that if you feel a little bit different than all of your friends, that is a good thing. You are unique. There is something very special about not going with the cultural conditioning way of thinking. There's something very powerful about it because it's so easy to get lost up in that thinking because there's so many people thinking the same way. If you think a little bit different, you stand out, your perspectives stand out, and that is a good thing. So the first part of this is just to become completely okay and accepting of who you are, and how you're showing up in the world. And as you become more accepting of it, the paradox is, is that you then begin to detach from what people think because you believe it so much that you don't need other people to buy into it too, to believe in it more. But now I think another part of this is just understanding that we can change the value of what's important to us. Now there's always at some level going to be a type of necessity or desire to be accepted by other people. It's just kind of ingrained into our species. Uh, but the idea is that we can learn to value other ideas just as equal so that it almost balances out in a way. So what I've learned how to balance or to value is to value uniqueness, to value, uh, being different. And as I began to value that more and to accept it, it's like the necessity to really be accepted social conditioning point of view, I've been able to really let it go more. So it's like, where's the focus? Is the focus on expressing yourself 100%? Or almost being tailored to how other people think about who you are. If the intent is put on expressing yourself rather than having a certain impression on what people will think, the idea is that you're able to come up more powerfully in the world. So next time you're in public, what I encourage you to do is to go around and instead of focusing on how well other people think about me, change the question that you're asking yourself. Ask yourself the question, how can I express myself 100%? And whatever that is, people, some people are going to like you, some people aren't. That's part of life. It's okay. And the good part about this is that you are being yourself 100%, and by doing that, you're not cheating anyone else from knowing the real you of who you are. If we're trying to be somebody else or be somebody that everyone else accepts, the idea is that we're not really being ourselves and we're actually cheating other people out from knowing who we really are. So it's a funny paradox, but the idea is to let go of what other people think by accepting ourselves 100%. Understand that we can focus and stay instead on the question of how will other people like me or what do I need to do to fit in, to changing the question we ask ourselves to how can I express myself 100% and really be who I'm meant to be. I hope you guys enjoyed this video. Feel free to like this video if you liked it, share it if you found it of value, and I will see you guys on the next vid. All right, peace, much love.
