I lost 20lbs of Fat by Doing Shadow work (how I did it)

In this personal vlog, Aaron Doughty recounts how he shed roughly 20‑30 pounds of body fat over a three‑to‑four‑month period by combining a strict calorie‑deficit cutting phase with intensive shadow‑work. He critiques popular diets (keto, paleo, fasting, vegan) as ultimately converging on the same principle: a calorie deficit determines weight change. Aaron describes his fitness background, support from personal trainers and friends, and his use of the Whoop tracker for sleep, HRV, and activity monitoring. The narrative pivots to his emotional upheaval after a breakup, revealing how unresolved childhood wounds—particularly a “feminine wound” from an ex‑stepmother—drove a need for control. Through shadow‑work, he explored masculine and feminine energies, shifted from rigid tracking to flow‑state practices (daily creek meditation, hapé, ancestral healing, playing instruments), and nurtured himself. This inner work unlocked the discipline and mindset needed for his cutting phase, resulting in visible physical transformation. Aaron frames the weight‑loss process as a microcosm for broader life change, arguing that mastering the simple principle of calorie deficit, paired with deep self‑awareness, can be applied to any personal transformation.

All these diets really have one thing in common. If you look at like the keto diet, the keto diet is they say, oh, if you eat a lot of fat and protein and almost no carbs, your body switches to this fat burning thing and blah, blah, blah, blah, and you'll lose more fat. Well, and your body will use the fat as energy instead of carbs, 'cause at first it's gonna kind of suck. Sharing this with you is gonna show you not just the shadow work, how we may retain a certain body image or self-image based on our own shadow, and understanding that sometimes we also retain weight. You know, there's a lot of symbolism in our reality as to what our bodies are telling us. Some people have said our bodies are our subconscious mind. And there was a period I wanted to share with you my story of what I've gone through the last 6 to 8 months and how I've been going through so much shadow work, but how that shadow work has transformed me. I'm literally a completely different person than when you may have saw my content a year ago or even at the beginning of the year. And it has to do with the shadow work that I've been doing, but I wanna also talk about it in the context of understanding the process of losing Weight, losing weight. And here's the funny thing is when we talk about how we need to lose weight, we need to lose weight. Think about it, we need to lose weight. A lot of times it has to do with understanding patience, not patience like I need to lose weight quicker, but think about it, I need to lose, comma, weight, like stop, wait. It's like there's almost a motion that has been halted. Emotion that is being stored within our own body, a trying to escape maybe the present moment. There's different ways that we can understand even the words that we use. The meaning of the words we use can many times be signs as to what we are energetically holding onto that maybe it's time we let go of. But also I've lost literally 25, maybe even 30 pounds of fat in the last 3 to 4 months. Now, this isn't necessarily the healthiest way to go about it. That is very radical. And I'll share with you the whole story of this whole process, but this has to do with the shadow work that I've been doing. But it also has to do with what I've learned about fitness. And I wanna share that with all of you, even though it may not seem relevant. It's like, oh, I'm gonna learn about fitness. I'm not kidding you guys, I've studied this stuff. I'm not an expert, I'm not some like, you know, guy that's making fitness YouTube videos or anything, but I've studied this stuff very consistently for about 4 or 5 months now. I got my buddy Victor Otto, who used to be a personal trainer. I've got a personal trainer myself. I've got other friends that are like, you know, my buddy here that lives here as well, Drew Canole, that we're in the same house together. He's like, owns Organifi, huge supplement company. And he's very much in, I'm around people that know about fitness. Now, let me share with you a little bit about what happened in this process. And I really believe that there's a very beautiful understanding when you understand the process of losing weight, you can also understand the process of you transforming any area of your life. It makes it very, very apparent that this is what you do to change your life. This is what you do also if you wanna lose weight. It's so simple, but it looks so complex. When you talk about losing weight, for example, you've got all these different diets. You've got keto, you've got paleo, you've got low carb, you've got intermittent fasting, you've got vegan, you've got all these different lifestyles/diets ways of going about like different philosophies. You got the Bulletproof Coffee stuff, right? All of these different things lead to one specific thing that if you do, you get certain results. You're either gonna lose weight or lose fat or you're gonna gain weight or you're gonna gain fat. And it's so simple. But once you know about this, you can apply this towards any area of your life. And it's a game changer. It's been life-changing for me. Maybe I'll post a photo. Here's a before and after photo right here of me literally 3 months ago. I've only been cutting for a little bit less than 12 weeks. And cutting means I've been in a calorie deficit, meaning I'm not eating as much, I'm not eating as much food as the calories that I'm burning. So I'm eating less calories than I burn. I've only been doing that for about 11 weeks now. I've got another week of this cut, then I go into maintenance mode, which is gonna be awesome. But I'll share with you that kind of that process, but this is before and this is after. And you could see the difference. The difference is quite a bit. There's a lot of fat that was right around my midsection. I tend to hold it right in my gut and in my legs and in my butt. And it's, yeah, it's funny. As I was at the peak of this bulk, we have some people that come and clean the house here. Every day. And I know that sounds so bougie to say, but they come clean the house and they're really cool. We've really connected to them. But one of them, she was convinced that I had like a fake butt or something like that. 'Cause when I was at the peak of my bulk, it just popped. It was like, so it just popped out so much. And that's where I store my fat. But the reason I'm sharing that with you is like, that's the point I was at. I was at this point to where probably bigger than I've ever been. I was also, when I say 30 pounds, it's probably more about 20, 25 pounds of fat. But I would eat so much and I would drink so much, like I had so much salt that there are times that my body weighed 30 pounds more than what I weigh right now. And this was only 3 months ago. Now this isn't healthy to cut this fast. I'm very intense with things that I do, but also I wanna combine this with the shadow work to share with you some of the different things that I've learned on this process. So first off, what happened was at the beginning of the year, I was going through, I'd say a lot of emotional things. I had just gone through a breakup and I was going through the process of letting go of that attachment to that outcome. And when I was going through that, it was originally, it was something that I didn't think was gonna have that much. I thought it was gonna be very easy to move in because it was like a mutual decision that, you know, that we broke up, me, my ex-girlfriend and I. And when we were, you know, we traveled for 3 years or for 3 months last year at the end of the month, even after we broke up, when we were in Tulum for a month, we decided to continue to travel for a couple months together. And we became even closer. We became great friends. Even to this day, we're still amazing friends. Many of you guys know Lior. We're still amazing friends. Just got the phone off. I was on the phone with her last night and we were talking and catching up. However, after we traveled for a couple months, we, went and started, she went back to Los Angeles. I went back to Vegas and we retained a very good friendship, but it was like there were moving in and out of it being easy and it being more challenging because we had like these plans for the future. And there were like, I don't know what exactly it was, but there was definitely a lot of emotional stuff I was working through. And a lot of that was letting go of the outcome. A lot of that was letting go of like this belief that I had that like, this was the, if this didn't happen, then there wasn't gonna be happiness. It didn't logically make sense when I thought about it. I was like, of course that's not true. But emotionally, there was something about it that just felt very challenging for me to go through. And for months I was going through this shadow of letting go, but still like kind of going back and forth. And what eventually happened is we, we decided, you know, like we kind of made the choice that we kind of stopped talking. And when we stopped talking, that was so that we could both energetically detach our like energetic cords in a way from each other. And during that period though, it put me almost even deeper into that process of really learning to let go. And then I had some of the most profound transformations in my life when I was doing the shadow work. And that was that my desire to try to control the outcome of things in my life was where a lot of the suffering, the pain I was cut, it was coming. And I could even look at the earlier on in that relationship and see that my insistence that things turn out a certain way. And I think I have this like shadow part of myself that likes to control different things in my life. I think because I went through so much pain early on in life, especially like from 7 to 16 years old with the whole ex-stepmom thing. I think what happened is I didn't have control in that time. I had someone that had control over me. And because of that, I think that now that I don't, 16, 17 years old came around and my dad divorced her, I think that now I try to control different aspects of my life. So even though I logically understood that we had to let go and that that's what we were both doing, it was a joint decision too, but there's an energetic pull there that was really weird. And basically we made the choice to stop talking for a while so it'd make it easier for us to energetically detach. But that's what spun me into this big process. And what happened was I was emotionally, I think I started to kind of resent different aspects of myself. I think that's kind of what happened as well with this whole shadow work. Before, you know, I wear this thing called the Whoop, which I'm a huge fan of, still am. This thing, what it does is it tracks like my macros, or it does track my macros. It tracks how many calories I burn. It tracks my sleep. Last night I got over 8.5 hours of sleep, which is crazy for me. For many of you, that might be normal. For me, anything over 7.5 hours is a lot. I got like 8.5 hours of sleep last night. So I can tell that it tracks. I know that I got an hour and a half of deep sleep. I got 2.5 hours of REM sleep and 4.5 hours of light sleep and then a mix of other sleep, whatever. But I use this to track my workouts to know how strenuous my workouts are. It helps me know what's called my HRV, heart rate variability. And anyways, I'm a big fan of this, but when I went through that of my own shadow work and I started becoming aware of these aspects of myself, I realized that I had a feminine wound I needed to heal. And that feminine wound, I believe, came from the whole ex-stepmom situation. I had this belief about women. I realized that I had this part of myself that wasn't healed. So then what I had to do is I thought that when you heal these different aspects of yourself, like I thought that in order for, I felt like I needed to go through almost my own warrior's initiation in a way to become more quote unquote masculine. And what I realized was that the key to actually me going deeper into my own masculine, which means having a firm, frame, leading different areas of my life, which I do very strongly in my business life. But in my relationships, it was something that I needed to focus on a little bit more, I could tell. So to do that, I thought what I had to do was go more into my masculine and put on this, like, you know, like do all these masculine things. But then what I realized is I actually have to go more into my feminine and to heal the feminine. So I went through 2 or 3 months where I thought what I was doing was bulking. First off, I was like, oh, I've had all these rules for years that I only eat this much amount, that I work out this much amount, that I eat only these types of foods. So then I became kind of rebellious and I stopped all that strictness. I stopped all that discipline. I went more into the feminine, more in the flow. I literally stopped wearing the Whoop. I stopped wearing the Whoop, which for me, I wore this for 3 years. I had such a big tan line. I may even have that now, but I had such a big tan line. It was like 5 times more than what it is right now from wearing this thing for 2, 3 years straight. And I stopped wearing it. I stopped tracking. I stopped that masculine focus. And then I started just, it was in the summertime of this year. I started going to the creek every day, meditating every day. I was doing a lot of hapé. I was just like focusing on connecting to my own personal growth. That's when I started spending a lot of time here Sedona, and it was very magical. And that was when I went into my feminine and healed my beliefs about the feminine and went through that flowy type energy. And I had some profound realizations. I also went through some ancestral healing. I have a friend that had an ancestral healing course that I went through that was very powerful. And that shadow work made me aware of a lot of different aspects of my wealth. Now just realize as well, What shadow work is, is shadow work is where you become aware of the unconscious parts of yourself. We all have a shadow, unconscious parts of ourself we're not aware of that many times stemmed from childhood behavior, things that happened during childhood, these meanings we made about who we are. And what I realized about myself is that I had these negative beliefs about women. And I think because maybe now that I'm thinking about this, I think because I had a woman that tried to control me growing up, then I became rebellious and then I believed I had to control different aspects of my life. But I think that maybe that's one of the reasons I tried to control the outcome of how things happened, even in my romantic partnerships and relationships. I could see how maybe that was a shadow aspect of myself, but When I learned how to really embrace the feminine, which means also I had to learn to nurture myself. I felt like maybe part of myself craved a certain level of nurturing growing up, especially from having that ex-stepmom in my life from, for that period of my life. So I craved nurturing. So what I began to do is nurture myself. I began to play more, less tracking on the Whoop, more going to the creek. I started playing more musical instruments. I bought a hang drum. I bought flute. I bought a flute. I'm looking at it right now. As I started to go into these more flowy activities, I started to feel more like I was giving myself what I craved. 'Cause I think that I crave in a girlfriend or like a relationship, I think I craved nurturing and that kind of energy. And it was because I craved it that also the key was for me to give myself that emotion. So, you know, I think that's important. If you're listening to this right now and maybe you don't feel safe in certain relationships, maybe that means that the key is to focus on trust, but instead of looking for it in someone else, learn how to trust yourself. And part of trusting yourself sometimes is being aware of your own word.
