I meditated everyday for 6 months and EVERYTHING changed...

Aaron Doughty quit Adderall and cannabis within weeks of starting a 15-minute daily candle-gazing meditation in 2011. The practice sparked a spiritual awakening that reshaped his relationships and self-perception, eventually leading him to launch a YouTube channel in 2017 and reach a million subscribers by 2021.

I learned a very simple meditation process 12 years ago that completely transformed my life. In the last 12 years, I've gone from feeling trapped in a 9-to-5 job I did not like. I went from having what is called ADHD, taking Adderall, which had harsh side effects, and to counteract those side effects, I would do different substances that allow me to eat or sleep. And what would end up happening is I felt trapped in old patterns. I recognized I was attracting similar people into my life over and over again, replaying those dynamics out in different subconscious ways. And when I learned meditation in 2011, that completely transformed my life. Within a short period of time, I started to feel more emotionally free. I started to— I got rid of taking Adderall for having ADHD, and I began meditating. And what ended up happening is I started to feel completely different about myself. I went through a spiritual awakening in 2012. This led to me going deeper inside of myself, leading me all the way up until 2017 when I started my YouTube channel. I started to share different ideas of what I was learning. I gained the confidence in myself to start putting out content, to start, uh, going against and in a way expanding beyond my fears. Of what other people thought of me, what my friends in high school would think about the YouTube videos that I make. And what eventually happened is I gained momentum and then I went through different forms of transformation that has led me to living my dream life, traveling the world, doing what I love. I now run live events and there's a whole new different confident version of myself now. Not only that, there are different relationship ways I've transformed in my own relationships when it comes to different catalysts that meditation has allowed me to work through, to go deeper inside of myself, to literally embody a new version of me. So I have a more confident energy activated because of meditation. I have that of more emotional availability because of meditation. I live my dream life, I believe, because of meditation. And in this video, I want to show you what this timeline actually looks like and how it can very powerfully transform your life if you apply it. And I'm going to give you a very simple practice that you can do that I've done that is so simple that has allowed me to completely transform my life from the inside out. Now, first off, let's start at the beginning when I was born. I'm just kidding. We're not going that far back, but back in, I would say if you've been watching my videos, then you know a little bit, just to give it a little bit of context. There was definitely a theme in my life of feeling like I was trapped in a box for most of my childhood. I wasn't necessarily allowed to be the real me. I remember that when I got my job selling women's shoes, there was like this extroverted personality that came out because from 7 to 17 years old, I wasn't really allowed to have a personality. Like I wasn't allowed to have friends. I wasn't— I had to earn going to school activities. My brother and I were normally just outside doing yard work all day. We don't have to go into the whole energy of it. If you watch my videos, you know a little bit of the story, but this is rooted in having a controlling stepmom in my life that was kind of like a source of feeling like I wasn't allowed to have freedom, feeling controlled. And what happened is she left my life at 17. At 17, it was like a whole new world. I was allowed to have friends. I was allowed to eat enough. Like, food was like something that was readily available because before that there was definitely deprivation of that. And there was a feeling like I had to prove myself. There was a feeling like I wasn't good enough unless I was tuning myself to someone else. And that thing that I had to tune to was also like, it would always, the bar would always change. So there was no stability in even that. Now what happened is, fast forward, my senior year of high school was really the only year of high school that I had like a normal high school where I was allowed to have friends, allowed to go to school activities, and I really had freedom. But then at this job selling women's shoes at Nordstrom's, I was like 18, 19 years old, and it was like my personality started to come out where I was very outgoing. Part of that, I think too, I was just so excited to have freedom. So excited to have friends, so excited to kind of have the freedom to like go to this job. And at that job selling women's shoes at Nordstrom's, we got paid a commission and I was equating out to making like $20, $30 an hour, which back in 2009, 2010, that was like, that was really good money for my age. And it was an energy where there was always this feeling that there was something wrong with me as well, because people would always say like, why do you have so much energy? One of the reasons I think I had so much energy is because from 7 to 17, I wasn't allowed to express the real me. So here I am expressing myself, selling women's shoes, having friends and partying, smoking, doing all of these kind of like bad habits, but because I was free to do it. Now what happened though is because of the feeling like there's something wrong with me, going to a doctor that then prescribed me Adderall, which is a prescription that they give out for people that have what is called ADHD. Uh, the side effects of Adderall were one, I could focus like crazy, but the side effects were I couldn't eat very much, couldn't sleep very much. And what I would do is I felt like I was on a hamster wheel. I would go to work, I would take Adderall, I would make a whole bunch of money selling, I'd be extremely focused. I'd get off work and then it would be hard to sleep or eat. So what I would do is I would smoke. I'd smoke cannabis and what that would allow me to do is to eat or sleep. Then what I realized is there was this one moment actually where I remember I was helping a customer and it was in the middle of the day and like my wrist was like twitching and it was like I couldn't control it. I was just looking at it. It wasn't painful. It was just like, like this. And I remember the lady looking at me like, what the hell? She'd tell I was like, there was something happening and it was just, it was, it was kind of embarrassing, but I was like, what is going on here? In that moment, I decided to find another solution. So I went online and I said, what are other things I could do besides Adderall to balance out my energy? Because I feel like I'm codependent in a way on these substances. So what I did is I came across meditation. And on meditation, what it said was that there was no negative side effects, just positive side effects. You'd feel more mentally clear. You'd be able to sleep deeper, if anything, you'd feel more present. There was this mindfulness component of it. And at first I kind of judged it and I thought it was kind of like woo-woo, but I was like, you know what? I'm kind of like in a spot where I want to get off this hamster wheel. So what I did is I ended up just deciding that I was gonna learn meditation. Now, the first couple days of meditating, nothing crazy happened. If anything, I felt more resistant prior to this. Also, if we were to like take this back, back in 2007, 2009, my mom showed me the, the— was it 2? Yeah, I think it was 2009, 2010. I saw the movie The Secret, which is all about the law of attraction and how thoughts create reality. And what happened is, I remember my mom showed that to me, and at first I didn't think much of it, but there was something that really stuck with me. And that was that beliefs create reality. Whatever you believe to be true is being reflected back to you. And what happened is that was like a seed that was planted in 2009. And then when I learned meditation in 2011, 2012, that's when things really began to shift. Now it was 2 or 3 days into meditation. And at first I was realizing thoughts create reality. So I was like, so I was so not wanting to think negative thoughts. That I was thinking a lot of negative thoughts. I was like, what if I think the worst thoughts possible? And I would be this weird internal resistance was created. And what ended up happening is it'd get worse. But then I read something that said, try this in meditation. And it's a very simple practice. I've been doing this exact practice for about 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes at night for the last 12 years. What you do is you stare at a candle flame. That's it. You look at a candle flame and what you do is you observe your thoughts. You don't try to control them. You just let them be there. It's almost like you are at a park bench, sitting at a bench at a park, because that's why it's called a park bench, and people and dogs and birds and all of these things are happening and you are simply observing them. Now, if we were trying to control them, that's like running out and saying, you, Walk your bike. You do this. Dog, get off the grass. Birds, what are you doing up there? And that's what a lot of people do with meditation, and that's why it's so hard, because they're trying to control. Like, no, if I get the park to look exactly the way I want, then I can feel good, then I can feel safe, then I'm gonna attract abundance. But the real power is when you observe your thoughts, you let them be there. Funny enough, you let them be there, and it's like they begin to go away. There's less resistance. There's more space that's created. So back in 2011, 2012, I started to observe my thoughts. And what happened is I started to feel completely different about myself. I remember the second or third day in, I decided this is gonna change my life forever. I don't know if it was like a straight decision that I made or just an inner knowing, but it's like, if I do this every single day, my life will transform. So I committed to it. And what happened is this spaciousness inside of me started to fill me up and I started to feel different. I started to feel more present. I started to become aware of a lot of these subconscious beliefs that were holding me back. Very quickly, one thing that I realized was that because I believed that I, in a way, was trapped in that 9 to 5 job, I also realized that the manager at Nordstrom's that I had that was in my life for years She was the same exact personality construct as my ex-stepmom. She was controlling, she was protected by upper management, things weren't fair, everyone was tiptoeing around her, was the same way I grew up. And no matter what we said to other people, we'd get more in trouble if we said anything. Well, guess what? If you go to HR to say something at Nordstrom's, she was protected by upper management. We'd get in more trouble, wouldn't get the schedule that we wanted. It was very similar. I started to become aware like, wow, this is so similar. I started to realize how my beliefs were creating my life experiences. And it was subtle at first. It wasn't just these mind-blowing epiphanies one after the other. It was like, whoa, this is the same energy of when I was a kid. And what I eventually realized is I had a spiritual awakening where I began to connect more to this like deeper aspect of me. I realized, in a way, a lot, what a lot of spiritual ancient teachings show, that we are eternal spiritual beings living temporary human experiences. And when I started to feel into this, something about my life began to shift. But one of the main ones is I was able to realize that the stepmom stuff that I went through from 7 to 17, it created the pressure that allowed me to go through this massive spiritual awakening. Because during the spiritual awakening, My whole entire life transformed. I started to observe my thoughts. I started to observe and become aware of my beliefs. I started to become aware that I believed I was attracting controlling people and that somehow felt familiar. But ultimately what ended up happening is I began to realize that part of this was rooted in the unprocessed energy of my ex-stepmom. So there was this story that life's not fair. There was this story around people are trying to control me, especially authority figures. Because as a kid, a stepmom is an authority figure. And then later on as an adult, a manager is an authority figure. So I found this very interesting and I started to observe it. And then what I started to do is also at the same time, let me say, within 2 weeks of meditating, I started to feel differently. I completely got off Adderall and then I completely stopped smoking cannabis within 2 weeks. Just decided and just quit. And at first it was actually kind of hard because I was smoking for about a year. Every time I'd get off work, I wouldn't smoke at my job, but at the end of the day I would, and it would bring me a certain level of certainty, of relaxation, 'cause I knew that once I smoked, it would like deplug me from all the drama of life. But I realized I was numbing my emotions. So in 2011, or I think it was 2012, 2012 was when I actually quit smoking. So I learned meditation, but I committed to it in 2012. That's when I was like, gonna do this every single day. I learned kind of the idea, but then that's when I committed to it in 2012. And then within 2 or 3 weeks, completely got off Adderall, completely got off smoking cannabis, started to feel different. And get this, that manager was in my life for like 2 years. We couldn't get her fired no matter what we did. We'd go up to management, say she did, like she would get away with crazy stuff, but she was protected by upper management. I ended up going through my spiritual awakening, and what happened is it's almost like my past changed. All this stuff in my past that I always saw as something very negative all of a sudden became positive because I'm like, I may not have gone through my spiritual awakening, I may have not learned meditation if it wasn't for the pain of my past. So what I did is I ended up forgiving my ex-stepmom, and part of this forgiveness, by the way, also was that I realized she was treated the same way by her dad. And there's a reason, like people are always doing the best they can with the level of consciousness they were at. This was hard to look at because for so long the story was, I don't have freedom, this isn't fair, I need to fight for freedom, this person's trying to control me, there's a lot of blame. But then I realized she was, there's a reason she is that way. Hurt people hurt people. Now, this doesn't make it, it's not like this one idea was like all the energy just left my body and I was completely healed. But a big part of it was I was able to understand more. And in that understanding, I was able to let go and forgive and in a way be grateful because it helped me become more aware of myself. It helped me grow and have the spiritual awakening that I did. Now get this, within a week or two, of learning, not just learning meditation, but in a week or two of forgiving my ex-stepmom, that manager got fired for something completely irrelevant to me or anyone else. She got fired for something. She sent an email to some lady that was pregnant and she said something she shouldn't have said and she got fired. She'd done way worse things than that, by the way, but she was protected. But all of a sudden I forgive my ex-stepmom In a way, I'm grateful for it because it led me to my spiritual awakening. And that manager got fired. My life is starting to transform. I'm not attracting controlling people like that anymore. That went away. And then I felt like I was in a whole new reality. At the same time, I was still working selling women's shoes. Now I will say I went through a little bit of an ungrounded phase in 2013. Where it was kind of like I was resistant to authority. I had to like kind of ground myself back. And this is when I left Nordstrom's and I went to Barney's New York, which is still selling women's shoes. But for 2013 to 2017, I worked at women's shoes at Barney's New York. Now, when I was there in 2015, I knew I wanted to be on YouTube, but I didn't have the confidence. At the same time, I was learning during this period, I was learning more and more about, I was meditating every day, but I was also like studying things I was into. I was studying consciousness, raising vibration. I read books like "Letting Go." I was like watching, going through seminars, reading Tony Robbins, "Think and Grow Rich," like all of these like self-help books, some of which spiritual books as well. But nonetheless, 2015, I had the idea to be on YouTube, observing. I was becoming aware and still observing thoughts, still observing just for 10 minutes, 15 minutes in the morning, 10, 15 minutes at night. And then what I realized is in 2017 was when I simply said, you know what, I'm gonna go for it on YouTube. I am going to commit to daily YouTube videos. And part of that was from meditate, literally in a meditation, I was told, if you make videos every single day, your life will transform. It wasn't like I was told by like some Archangel Michael came outta the clouds and was like, Aaron Doughty, You have been chosen to make YouTube videos. It was more so like I was in meditation. There was this inner knowing. It's like, if you made videos every day, it's gonna be a stretch for you. It's gonna require you while you're working 40 hours a week selling women's shoes, the other 20, 30 hours a week, you're gonna be making videos. Your life will be unrecognizable in a year from now. Well, guess what? It wasn't a year from then. It was like 3 to 6 months from then, my channel started to take off. And things started to grow. And within, uh, in August of 2017, my last day of my working my 9-to-5 job was the Conor McGregor-Mayweather fight. It was a boxing match. I was living in Vegas. That's where I was born and raised before I moved away. Um, but that, that was my last day of that 9-to-5 job. It was an incredible, uh, I had a good sale. I knew we'd make a lot of money in commission that day because it was the The fight was in Vegas. So what I ended up doing is going to a friend's house at the end of the day, watching the fight. That was my last day ever having a 9 to 5 job. Now, during that time, my whole entire life transformed because I was observing my thoughts, observing my passion, following that thread, becoming aware of beliefs that were holding me back. And I realized that a lot of the beliefs holding me back were like, I was afraid of what friends from high school would think. I was afraid of judgment, what people would think, negative comments. And I became aware that like, I think thoughts, but I'm not my thoughts. It's one of the biggest transformations you can have. You think thoughts, but you're not your thoughts. And instead focusing on following the passion was a huge epiphany for me. And I just was focused in 2017 of just making videos. I was in this new energy. People would, my whole identity shifted here. By the way, 2011, 2012, when I learned meditation, what is one of the ultimate identity shifting things that happens from that is I went from seeing myself as an ADHD person, ADHD person that's like not able to focus where people are saying, what's wrong with you? Feeling like there's something wrong with me to meditating, being calm. But let me also say that when this happened, I learned meditation, people were like, what's going on with you? Like there's something so different about your energy. And that would just kind of reaffirm like, I'm a new me. Now during this time, I also learned about something called the self-image. I read a book called Psycho-Cybernetics and I started to see myself as a top salesperson, as a meditator. That was also an important part of it is it's like I took on these values of like the spiritual component of myself that completely transformed my life, started to see myself as a top salesperson. And very quickly I started to think, feel, and act as that version of me. It became my reality. Fast forward, I'm like, I'm still working a 9-to-5 job I hate. I start to take on the identity of, I'm like, what if I did the same thing over here? And I started to see myself as a YouTuber. Well, that really changed my life. Now, let me say as well, I had one of the deepest like relationships up until this point that I had. I met someone that there was this really deep like connection, but also trauma bond where we both like, had this, maybe it was like replayed some similar familiar childhood dynamics up, but it was a deep connection that like really brought up a lot of stuff for both of us. And that had me go through like a relationship catalyst transformation. There were parts of it that were very challenging, but nonetheless, meditation is what helped me get through that and what helped me become aware of what those pattern dynamics were. Because very often I think what we do in relationship is we feel emotion, we have energies that we feel, we don't know what to do with them, so we try to avoid them. And we think that if we get someone else, if we can like stay connected to someone else, then maybe that will like alleviate that. But what happened is I became aware that I was in a way projecting childhood energy onto this person, and I was able to observe it, to go through it, to feel it, to heal it. And that was something that really transformed my life in a very powerful way, allowed me to go to the deepest core of my own identity and to feel and heal and let go of some of the deepest level wounds, which had to do with the dynamic of a lot of what I teach in my content, which is the mother-father-child dynamic. And what I realized is I was replaying those dynamics out. Well, through that, shortly afterward in 2020, you know what happened? In the world where what happened is everything got shut down. And when that happened, normally there'd be this react— there was this big reaction. A lot of people were having reaction to what was happening. There was a lot of fear. And I think when people are in fear and anger, they're a lot easier to control. And in that time, I was observing it, but I wasn't as emotionally reactive to it. Of course, I wasn't traveling and there was a little bit more limitation there. However, I was able to really be grounded during this period. This became honestly some of the best time, like because I think everyone was home, there was actually a big uplevel in my business because what I did is I learned how to like really own virtual, like doing virtual live events, committing to content, had a big spike here actually, but I was able to observe. So meditation is what also helped me not react and get sucked into the drama of what was happening in the world, not believe everything I was seeing. There were certain things that were happening where I would question things. I'm like, you know, I'm not getting that done. I'm not doing this even though everyone else is doing this thing. I'm not going to do it. And I had to really— I really got to become aware of like, what do I feel in my body and what do I want to do? That happened there. Uh, 2022, I believe 2021 was when I got the million YouTube plaque, which was a goal for a long time. Throughout this period, there was a a certain version of me, I think that I was becoming aware that like success for me was a way of like feeling valuable, feeling worthy and significant. And in 2021 is when the million YouTube plaque came because I had a million subscribers on YouTube. But what I eventually realized is that more so than the results, what I had to tune back to was just having fun, enjoying the process because the results were never gonna really change much. No matter what amount of money you get in the bank, no matter how many subscribers come, it's like if you don't love what you do and you're not enjoying the process, then what's the point? So I recommitted more to the process in 2022, and even more recently in 2024, I've been running live events, getting content at live events. I'm branching out of my old identity, and it's become this thing that has completely expanded my sense of confidence and my sense of self. Everything is transformed. Now, deeper levels of relationship dynamics as well, where I become aware of more becoming more emotionally available, letting, realizing there's a pattern of attracting people that were able to reflect back old patterns, realizing I'm worthy. I don't need to prove myself to anybody. That also includes choosing emotionally available partners. So when I'm dating, instead of seeing certain things that I used to see as, signs to go for it or something I was attracted to, I'm no longer attracted to the same things. But literally, like, relationship-level transformation has come from meditation. Following my purpose and living in that higher vibration has come from meditation. Letting go of these limiting beliefs and old core stories have led to more transformation. And all you have to do, by the way, in this meditation process that I teach, is 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes at night, you stare at a candle and you observe your thoughts. You don't try to control them. And simply doing that allows you to become more aware of the limiting beliefs and the stories that are running your life. Helps you become more aware of what you're feeling in your body. Breathwork is also something that will completely transform your life if you've never done it. I got certified in breathwork years ago and just going through the certification back in 2023 completely shifted my life. And if you want to experience it, by the way, it's free in my High Vibe Tribe. I'm gonna go ahead and link it below and join the High Vibe Tribe for free. It's a free community with a $1,000 course called High Vibe 101 in there for free. And then that breathwork is in there as well. It's all free. I believe it's so important that people go through this and really go. And there's also— it shows you how to meditate. You can learn all these things by going in there. Now realize that for meditation, for this whole entire process, one of the things you need to realize is that it's an inward journey because ultimately the outside reality is just a reflection of the inside anyways. So when you meditate, you're becoming aware, you're becoming familiar with, which is literally what meditation means, you're becoming familiar with yourself. You're knowing thyself more. You're not putting the power outside of you too, 'cause for so long I would blame other people in my life. I blamed, see that controlling person, see this, see that. And what this has allowed me to do is to go more inside of my own body. Another huge epiphany has been leaning into tension, being in my own frame and realizing tension isn't bad, being firm with who I am, expressing myself to other people, being vulnerable. These are all things that through meditation has allowed me to have that self-inquiry to then transform. So if you wanna transform your life, And you wanna learn how to really go deeper into all of this, I have a video that will show you step by step how to apply the most powerful meditation process I've ever learned called the Frame Technique, how to feel and understand what's called subject-object, how to feel the separation between you and the flame, you and the walls. This allows you to heal tuning to the environment. This allows you to feel safe inside of your own body. This will completely transform your life if you do it for 21 days. I learned it from a shadow work integration coach that had a double PhD in Carl Jungian psychology. And this is the thing that has really transformed so many people in my audience. So if you want to check it out, I'm going to go and link that video right here. Welcome to the frame technique meditation and activation.
