Aaron Doughty explains why empaths and people-pleasers compulsively ease tension: they learned as kids that keeping the household calm meant safety. That survival role stuck into adulthood, but tension is actually necessary for growth. The shift is learning to stop managing others' discomfort and let friction do its work.

Here's the thing about people pleasers, empaths, people that can feel other people's energy. A lot of times they feel like it's their job to ease tension in their life, to ease tension at their job, with their relationships, in their love life, whatever. They want to ease tension because as kids they felt like it was their job to ease tension in the family, to ease tension in the childhood house. That was a role that felt safe back in the day. The idea was if I wanna feel safe, I must mitigate the tension in the household. So then that role was taken on and what, why is that role really there? The role is there as a safety survival mechanism. The challenge is that then you grow up and you're still trying to mitigate taking responsibility for everyone else's tension because you don't want to feel, all because you don't wanna feel tension, but tension is where growth comes. Think of intention, literally intention. You are intention and people, especially spiritual people, they say, I don't want tension, tension is bad, but you're not in childhood anymore. It's not bad, tension is good.
