Once I did this, I became unstoppable...[the winners effect]

Aaron Doughty explains the Winners Effect: small consecutive wins reshape your identity and confidence through biology. Alpha fish change color and hormone levels after winning territory; monkeys surge in testosterone when they become alpha. The key is celebrating effort, not just outcomes, which builds a winning identity and lowers cortisol.

If you want to go from stuck to unstoppable, it can happen like this, and it does happen like this. It's just that sometimes we believe the process has to take a lot longer, and therefore it takes a lot longer. I remember when I was at a Tony Robbins seminar, he's like, how long does it take for transformation to happen? And he said, the truth is transformation happens in a moment. It comes with an insight. It comes with the choice that you make. It comes with the letting go of something. It comes in a moment. Now, with stuck to unstoppable, there are there are certain insights that I've had recently about what is called the winning effect. The winning effect has to do with the momentum of stacking wins over and over again so that you create momentum of you literally being a new version of yourself. Have you ever noticed and heard the saying that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer? Or have you noticed that when people win, there can be this momentum behind them winning where one area of their life they're winning in, and then in this other area of their life they're winning in, and then in this other area of their life they're winning in, Or the opposite, I've seen it happen where someone maybe loses and then in other areas of their life, they also lose. It's happened before where maybe somebody goes through a breakup and then right after that, they lose their job. And it's like, there's this theme, there's this momentum, there's this energy of loss. And then on the other side of that, there's this momentum of gain. Now there's actually a science behind this. There's an energy behind this. And there's a way that I'm gonna show you in this video that you can start to create incredible momentum in your life so that you literally quote unquote win more often and you create a new identity around this winning mentality, around this winning energy. Now, first off, let's look at this and we'll look at an example from this book that is called The Winning Effect. It's about the science of achievement and the winning effect. Listen to this. This one idea really shifted my perspective and I've heard of it many times before in different contexts as well. Now, first off, if you get that of a certain type of fish and this fish, what happens is there's different different versions of it. For this video, let's think of it in the version of alpha and beta fish. They're both the same species. Now what happens is the alpha fish have this beautiful yellow color that makes it easier for them to mate. It means also that they're more fertile, which means they're more likely to have babies or they're more attractive from that of the other fish. Now what happens is they're very territorial. Now they have a certain territory and they are able to kind of bully, and all the other betta fish that are more gray, because they haven't, I guess, been initiated into the yellow fish kingdom yet, 'cause they haven't activated that identity, are in a way kind of afraid of the alpha fish. Now what happens is, sometimes what happens is because of the bright color of these alpha fish, a bird will come down and take one of the fish. And as it takes the fish, what happens is if one of the other betta fish, gray betta fish come around and then take up the territory that the yellow fish lost because it just got eaten, within a very— like immediately things start to shift inside the fish. The fish then starts to become more yellow. The fish then will have literally more of— more fertile, and it literally changes its energy to where then the other betta fish won't even be around that fish that has gone from betta fish to alpha fish. So think about that. That's very interesting. Literally In a weird way, it's like the fish won the territory through not necessarily fighting, but won the territory just because the other fish got eaten. But then it assumed a new identity. It assumed a new role. And then with that literally came different level of testosterone and hormones that it then started acting as an alpha fish. Now they've also shown this, this isn't in the book, but this is another example. And by the way, there's another example in the book where they talk about, um, if you get different size mice and what you do is you have them in a way kind of fight for their territory, what'll happen is if you put one and one wins and then one wins again and you, what happens is it'll keep winning even against opponents that are much bigger than it because it's got this momentum going. It's got this, when someone wins, when someone has some form of achievement like that, their testosterone goes up and their cortisol goes down. Now what happens is at the same time, if you lose, your cortisol goes up and your testosterone goes down. Now here's the crazy thing about this too. Let's talk about collective conditioning of this. If you were to get a sports team and you were to have them and you were to measure the testosterone levels in the people and the sports, like teams that are going against each other, and you were to measure them after the game, the team that won would have significantly higher testosterone than the team that lost. Here's the crazy thing. Not only that, if you were to take fans that were in the stadium or fans that were tuning in and you were to test that of their testosterone, it would be in alignment with whatever team won. So the team that won, their fans literally have more testosterone because they associate it as a win, even though they didn't, you know, they didn't, they weren't in the game. But interestingly enough, there's this feeling of winning that then spawns from it a certain level of momentum, a certain level of, I guess, testosterone. Now the other analogy I was gonna share is if you were to take, here's the interesting thing also about monkeys. If you were to get that of a tribe of monkeys, there's alpha monkeys and there's beta monkeys. What happens is if in the case that the alpha monkey dies, gets killed or dies, another beta monkey will step up to the plate to become the alpha. Within one day, its testosterone goes up hundreds and hundreds of percent because it has assumed a new identity. It has assumed a new version of itself, which is very interesting because what happens is it just literally was— it gave itself permission and it started to be a new version of itself. And then It then also, what that comes with that is more selection with the chimp women. It has more of a selection. It's like a completely different reality, but it was just for making a choice to be in that energy. Now, when it comes to having and looking at your identity around winning, one thing to become aware of is do you view yourself as winning based on just outcomes? Now for me, for a long time, even back in 2017, my life really changed when I went from stuck. I felt stuck in that 9 to 5 job. The more deterministic where we believe that this is the way reality is and there's nothing we can do about it. It's also like there's a belief there that there's nothing I can do and I might as well stay stuck. What happens is when we move from feeling stuck to starting to, in a way, celebrating every step on the process of being that version of ourselves. This really is the key right here. I just said it. What you want to do is you want to start to be a new version of yourself, give yourself permission, and then celebrate every little thing that helps you be that version of you. Not every little thing that then gets the result, every little thing that shows the efforts of that version of you. Now, if you were to— here's another to wire this in even deeper because this really what I'm sharing with you here can change your life if you apply it and if you internalize it and if you start to live from this place. Another example, you get kids. If you were to tell kids that they're inherently smart, what happens is then with the effort of like them going through and them having different challenges so that they can learn more, They're then worried they're gonna mess up because they have this identity of being smart. They're then trying to protect their identity of being smart. They're less likely to learn. They choose easier challenges and they don't grow as much because they already assume the identity of being smart. Now that's an outcome, right? It's like an outcome. It's an identity-based thing, but here's the difference. If you get somebody, a kid, and you reward the kid for the effort, they put in, and they, even if they believe they have a lot further to go, but you reward them for their effort, they perform way better than the kids that believe they're smart. The kids that just like, almost like this entitlement energy of they're just already smart and there's nothing they need to do. It's a completely different reality. What you wanna do is reward yourself for the effort of every little step you take on the process of you becoming this new version of you. Now in 2017, when I had my biggest shift, I started making videos. Now every video I made, it was like a mini celebration. It was like I did the video and then I had party streamers, I had friends come over every single day. No, I'm just kidding. I didn't go that far. But what I would do is, it was like, in the beginning of starting the YouTube channel, it's like every video you're excited to put out and you wanna add value and you create momentum with every video you make. But then there's this pressure that happens after years of making videos where it's like there's this million subscribers, I need to perform in this way, and it's outcome-focused. And then there's this, there's also this comparative energy to everybody else and all the other YouTubers and all of this stuff. When instead what you do is you compare yourself to the effort you're putting in. You focus on effort, you focus on the hard work, you focus on the intention. And what happens is because you're not focused on outcome, there's a more freedom-filled energy there. So in essence, what I would do is if I made a video, I would in a way celebrate that. That's a win. It's not a loss, that's a win. Then what I would do is I would celebrate the win of even learning how to edit a little bit. I would then put it out there and then share something for the first time on Instagram, which is a big kind of like breakthrough because I was so worried about what my friends and family thought about me. Wasn't so much about the YouTube people that like never knew me anyways, but it was like friends and family and people from high school. They're going to think I'm weird. I'd put a video out and then I would kind of celebrate that I had the courage to do that. You know, like if you were to go out and you were to say, okay, I have social anxiety, I want to ask someone out, for example, just go and talk to someone. And that's a celebration. That's a win. And then go. And then maybe one day you go and you go to get a phone number. Then what happens? You ask for a phone number and they say no. Still a win. You ask for the phone number, but then what happens is you go and then eventually you get the phone number. That's also a win and you can celebrate that. Then eventually you ask to go on— you see what I mean here? It's like these are all little wins, but we're so harshly criticizing ourselves in that metaphor for our life that what happens is then we put this pressure to where we're not on that winning momentum. We're not on that winning streak. And to be on that winning streak You want to focus more on the effort of who you are becoming, not on the outcome of I am smart, I am this, I am that. So there's also a lot of room to grow within that. Like when I do live events, the cool thing is as I do live events, just doing the live events are fun, but also I see them as just doing it. It requires a lot of energy to do, but just doing it puts me in a certain frequency where in a certain energy where I like am passionate about it, but also it wires in that new identity, that new way of being. Not in a way like I've already figured it all out, I'm perfect, but in a way like, oh, this is something I get to learn. Just having the effort to do that, having the energy to do that is wiring in this new way of being. So what happens is confidence is built from momentum. Confidence is built from doing new things. Confidence is built from putting effort into things that normally Maybe you wouldn't, but if you start rewarding yourself for the efforts of committing to a new version of you, your life will begin to change in a very powerful way. In 2012, I literally decided and I learned meditation. That shifted my life more than anything. In 2017, I committed to daily videos on YouTube. That also shifted my life more than anything up until that point. That shifted my life a lot, making videos. And then what happened is I started to see myself as a hard worker. Like, I don't— the one thing I'm really focused on recently is really focusing more on the action, the energy I put into the reality that I'm in, and doing what I love, but also of in a way rewarding the action, rewarding the effort. Because if you're watching this video, you're probably someone that looks at your shadow. You're probably someone that's doing the inner work. Have you celebrated that? Do you recognize that there are not a judgmental, egotistical self-grandiose way that there are a lot of people on the planet that aren't aware of this kind of information. Doesn't make you better than them, but it does help you realize you're doing the work. You're looking at yourself in that way. There's something you can in a way celebrate, not an ego gratification way, but in a way like, yeah, I'm doing the work. I'm focused on this stuff. I wouldn't perceive of it if I wasn't the vibration of it. If you want to transform your life more than anything else, It's about making a choice about who you are, not based on some ego thing, on who you are based on the effort you put in and the skills you learn and committed to and the sense of value you want to put out into the world. And as you commit to that, you'll notice that your life begins to change in a very powerful way. This is really what, what is quote unquote called activating your highest timeline. You're a new version of you every moment, and activating is a choice that you make and it's a commitment to you being this new version of you. And now more than ever, I think this is so important on the planet. There are so many people that are getting so, in a way, entangled in the drama happening in the world and the social collective conditioning, comparing themselves on social media instead of comparing yourself to the person that you were even 10, 20 minutes ago or like 2 years ago. Celebrate it. You'll be more, you'll be in this winning energy more and more. Your testosterone or your confidence will go up. Your cortisol will go down. And as you start reminding yourself and committing to that process, you'll find that this year can be one of the most powerful years you've ever had in your life.
