Once you ignore reality, you’ll attract everything you want

In this 30‑minute self‑help talk, Aaron Doughty presents a framework for transforming one’s life by shifting internal energy rather than trying to change external circumstances. He begins with the classic “reality is a mirror” metaphor, arguing that people often try to change the mirror (the world) by altering their outward actions, which creates resistance. Instead, he teaches that the desired reality already exists within us; we must change our internal state—moving from contraction (survival, people‑pleasing, anxious/avoidant patterns) through protection, into a neutral “gap” where we observe without reacting, and finally into openness and flow. He explains the “gap” as a delay caused by the momentum of long‑held patterns and stresses the importance of staying present and neutral while the external world catches up. Doughty introduces the concept of “ignoring reality” (observing without denial or attachment) and contrasts it with denial. He ties this to nervous‑system regulation, describing people‑pleasing, hyper‑independence, and avoidance as survival strategies that keep us contracted. He also draws on Vadim Zeland’s Reality Transurfing and its “pendulum” idea, describing collective thought‑forms that amplify emotional reactivity; neutrality and observation are presented as the way to disengage from pendulums. Personal anecdotes (starting a YouTube channel while working a 9‑to‑5, a people‑pleasing episode in Sedona) illustrate the process. Finally, he promotes his “Shift Academy” program, offering meditations, quizzes, and live coaching to help viewers systematically move from contraction to openness.

What if what you want already exists? It's simply invisible to you because of your energy. And what if you were to learn this one concept and it would completely transform your life? It is something ancient wisdom points to. It is something that enlightened masters, people in our reality who we consider to be enlightened, already knew. And it's something that once we know completely transforms our life from the inside out. Now, first off, you've probably heard the metaphor before. Reality is like a mirror. If you imagine a mirror and looking into the mirror, based on the energy you are in, that is determining what your reflection is. Now, where people find resistance very often is they go about trying to change the mirror by changing their reflection from the outside, which we know sounds silly, doesn't it? If you think of a mirror and you had a frown on your face, would you go over to the mirror to change it into a smile? Now, of course, that seems backwards. You would first change the expression on your face and you would know that once you do that, naturally the reflection begins to change. That's because that's the way reality is. The reality that we live in is very similar to a mirror. Now, the challenge for many people is that the way they go about changing reality is by trying to change the external. It's by trying to accomplish more. It's by trying to get that person and prove themselves to other people, or it's a form of attachment pattern like anxious or avoidant attachment patterns, which are ways of either leaning in or pushing away. Which are both forms of control, which creates resistance. But when you learn this fundamental truth that I'm going to be sharing with you, it will completely change the way in which you show up in the world. Now, I remember the first time I heard the quote from Rumi. He said, what you seek is seeking you. Isn't it a nice idea to imagine that whatever you want to experience is just seeking you too? Doesn't it make you feel not so alone? You're like, well, I'm seeking the relationship and because I'm seeking it, that means someone's seeking me too. But here's the thing, that person can't find you if you are in a seeking energy. And what happens is the more you look, the more the reality of life reflects back the lack. Now, this is why if you were to actually look at the true meaning of the phrase that Rumi said, what you seek is seeking you, What it really means in the translation is what you seek is within you. It's already here. It's the, the love and the joy and the peace that you might seek in the world. You think you will experience by changing the mirror, but in actuality, you can't change the mirror because the mirror is simply a reflection of your energy. And very often what'll happen is people will begin to go through some form of transformation where they go from maybe their old self, some form of contraction. Maybe they're a people pleaser or somebody that's finally started setting boundaries in their life. And then what happens is they then go into what is called the gap. The gap is the delay where what happens is they start expressing themselves. Some people might lead their life, maybe they want to attract love and they start being this way, but it's like love hasn't come in yet. And what happens is there's a question of like, where is it? Like, why did I change my energy but I'm not experiencing the mere change in reality yet? And what happens is this is where people are in a way tested in a different way than you think. But I'm going to explain that in a moment. The test is not the universe or God testing you. It's the mere reality delay that once you understand changes everything. And that is that in this neutrality space, this is where the true degree of change really happens. Because what you want is you want to go from old you to the new you, the new you that has the reflection of the love, the joy, the peace, et cetera. Here's the thing though, when you get into the gap when you get into this zone, what you're really being tested on is this fundamental truth that changes everything. That is that the true degree of change is not whether the mirror of reality actually changes at all. The true degree of change is whether reality remains the same, but your internal state has changed. Think about this for a moment. Have you really changed if the moment you decide to start setting boundaries or the moment, like, have you really changed if you're like, I'm gonna surrender to God or the universe and not keep trying to control attracting a relationship, but you've really changed the moment you start, you make that choice, you let go, and then you make the choice and then you attract a relationship? Have you really changed? Or is it just now that you have something that helps you to feel like, oh, I've, I feel I have what I want now. Do you see the difference in that energy? And when you get to a place to where you're good either way with what happens, you're in a state of openness inside of your energy field, which is what we're really gonna be talking about in a minute that changes everything. But what happens is you've become aware that this is not the true degree of change. The mere delay of reality is simply that there is a delay in what we experience. Now, one of the reasons this is, is think about it. You may have had 5, 10, 15, 20, or 20+ years of a certain pattern in your life. You may have had the pattern of people pleasing, uh, hyper-independence, avoidant or anxious attachment style, and then all of a sudden you watch a movie or a book You watch a book, you read a book, or you watch a video, you go to a live event and you have this big breakthrough. But then what happens is you make the shift and then you're like, you're in the gap. You're like, why isn't things on my outside changed yet? There are literally 5, 10, 15, or 20 years of a certain pattern being practiced, a certain familiar energy. And because you've been thinking, feeling, and acting as this old version of you, And because as you act as this old version of you, people treat you like this old version of you, there's a certain momentum to your past self. So the moment you've made the internal change, there may be a delay, but part of that delay is because of momentum. There's a momentum there. And the key is trusting that process and making the choice to be this you despite the fact that the mirror reflection hasn't changed yet. Like, I think about when I first got on YouTube back in 2017. I made a commitment to me being a YouTuber and making a video every single day on YouTube. And that meant showing up even with resistance. That meant I doubted myself at times, if I'm being honest. That meant I wondered, am I even credible to be doing this? I don't know how to edit. Like, all these blocks came up. And then I started making videos. But wouldn't it look ridiculous if the moment I made one video, I'm like, I make a video and I'm like, nothing's changed. What do you mean? You told me to make videos. Nothing's changed. I made the video, I made it. And then it's like, but reality still looks the same. I'm still going to my 9 to 5 job. Well, there was 20-something years of me working a 9 to 5 job, thinking thoughts equal to that 9 to 5 job, feeling emotions equal to that job, and taking actions equal to that job. So all because I made a video on YouTube, of course things don't shift that quick. Things can shift quick when you're in a certain energy, but generally there is a momentum and there was a momentum to my past self. So the key was when I was in that gap, the key was choosing to be in the gap because it's who I choose to be. Do you see the answer here? You're being it because this is who you choose to be. And the moment you're good either way is the moment you've actually shifted. So back in the day, the way that I would use this is I recognize that I had to be it consistently because it's who I chose to be. And then I had to immerse myself in the process. I had to immerse myself in the process. And a lot of people quit here and they go back to their old self. Now, when we talk about ignoring reality, in a moment, I'm gonna explain this whole concept from an idea from a book that was written by a Russian quantum physicist that has completely transformed my life and so many people that I know watch my channel that have read that book. But I'm gonna share that with you in a minute because this will help you understand why you get pulled back into old patterns in a completely new way. But understand that when you're making this shift, there is a time of adjustment that happens where if you focus on the process and on enjoying the process, you're not then attached to outcome which is still a survival mode. Do you see when you're in survival, your energy's contracted and most people trying to manifest what they want, they do it from an energy of I need to escape where I am at, I need to get over here. And what happens is it's a contractive energy. It's an energy that still has the momentum. This is why this is the missing key for you. That still has the momentum of the past self, the contraction from the past self where you were being a certain way for 20, 30 years, whatever it is. So when we talk about ignoring reality and why ignoring reality is so powerful, this doesn't mean denying reality. It's very important you understand the difference here. Like, that'd be like me making videos at my— making videos while working my 9-to-5 job and then being in denial that I was working a 9-to-5 job and then being attached to the outcome of like, I'm gonna be a YouTuber with millions of followers. I used to have this friend growing up and he was in a band and he was always like, he'd always say like, when I'm famous, when I'm famous, when I'm on tour, when I'm on tour. And it was this energy where underneath you could feel that there was almost like, yeah, on one hand you can visualize it, but there was an attachment to the outcome. Like, I'm gonna be famous because I'm gonna get this. And there was a denial in the sense that there was an attachment. Now, when I was selling women's shoes, I was very aware that I was selling women's shoes. And the key for me, this too, by the way, is I went into my job and I was present when I was working. I was there. I knew I was more passionate about, about making videos. I was in two realities for a while. The key was that I wasn't in a resistant reality, like, I don't want to be here. This isn't who I am. I wasn't resistant there. I was ignoring it in the sense that I was not emotionally reactive to it. This is the difference. So it's like I was observing it. I was aware that I was there doing what I was doing, but then because it wasn't like something I was letting drain my energy so much, I would just show up, make the best of it. But then when I went home, I was present and in a flow state. And in that flow state, guess what? There were an energy that would flow through. It was a very activated, powerful flow state energy that then when I would make videos, started to go out and with consistency became something that grew. And within 6 months, I quit my 9 to 5 job and I had over 100,000 followers on YouTube. My life completely shifted. I had to be okay with being in the gap. And what I eventually did is I let the passion be the thing that lit me up, but I was observing, not reacting, and not staying in victim mode around where I was. Do you see the energy difference there? Because a lot of times people are like, they're over here and they're like, I don't wanna be over here, I don't wanna be over here, I don't wanna be over here, I wanna be over there, I wanna be over there, I wanna be over there. But not wanting to be over here creates contraction, it creates resistance. And instead, when we talk about ignoring, we're not denying that we're over here, We're observing where we are. We're neutral. Realize you think thoughts, but you're not your thoughts. You feel emotions, you're not your emotions. And what I would do is I would observe where I was, I would observe where I wanna be, but I focused more so on openness and allowing, which is the key here. This is what changes everything. This is really a process of you going from contraction to open. but you can't say, I will only be open if reality begins to shift. You have to be open because it's how you choose to be. So for example, let's use another example with this that I think can completely shift your life if you have this pattern. When I shifted the people pleasing pattern a few years ago, I had a shift where I recognized that I had this old belief. I had this old pattern where basically I would try to please people and want to ease their tension. And I had certain people in my life that I kind of like were really successful and kind of on a pedestal. And I find myself kind of contracted around them almost because I'd feel less than. But what I find is that it would be hard for me to say no when I really wanted to say no. And what would happen is it was like I was being inauthentic, but not knowing it, just thinking I just have to please them. If I please them, I'm good enough, they'll stay around. I literally felt responsible for their tension. So I became aware of this pattern. And then what happened is I started to like judge myself and I would got angry at myself for being in the pattern. But eventually I observed it. I observed the pattern when it would come up, when I would feel like not lying, but kind of like to make people happy. And instead I would look at that emotion and energy and what I would do is I would observe it But then what I would do is I would make the choice to instead open. Now, this meant there were moments where there'd be something that would happen, like somebody would want me to like come to a party or something, and I would normally say yes, even though I didn't want to. And I remember very specifically one time somebody, when I first made the shift, it was in Sedona, and somebody said to me, come to this like get-together, and I didn't want to go. And my mind first off went to, well, I can't just say no because they'll feel bad. Well, I'll make up an— I'll say I need to pick someone up from the airport 2 hours away. I was like, well, that's not authentic. That's not actually real. So then what I decided is I became aware of that desire. I said, no, I'm going to choose to open and be honest. And that meant expressing basically that I said, no, I will not go to that party and screw you. That's what I said. I'm just kidding. I didn't say that. Sometimes it can be a trigger or a response of contraction anytime we start opening though. And what I did is I opened up and I was just honest. I was like, thank you for the invite, but I'm not gonna, I'm not, I'm like, I think at the time I was busy with some things and I had other things I was focused on. So I was like, I just don't have the bandwidth for it. That's all I said. It was very true. And then guess what the response was? The response is, come on, it'll be fun. That was the response. There'll be burgers. And at that time, I think that's when I was vegan too. So I was like, but there won't even be vegan burgers there. But it was also like, I was like, okay, that didn't make me wanna go anymore necessarily. And I then had to reestablish my frame. You could say I'm being tested. I could go back to my old self. And instead I chose to open again. And I just said, thanks for, thank you, but still no. It was simple. It was a neutral thing, by the way. We could impose a story on here, but basically it was a neutral choice to continue to open. So a huge part of this process of you transforming your life is learning the power of ignoring reality, but not denying reality. It's ignoring the belief and the charge that comes up on thinking that that's who you are. 'Cause I have a message for you. Imagine this is a messenger. I'm coming, I'm like flying. I have a message for you. You are not a people pleaser. You are not an avoidant. You are not hyper-independent. These are survival strategies. These are ways in which you may have used to survive to regulate your nervous system. Because here's the other thing that will block what you want from coming into your life. Nervous system activation. These are ways to regulate your nervous system, by the way. People pleasing, avoidant, hyper-independent. They're ways of avoiding intimacy and opening. So what happens is as you become aware of these protective patterns and instead you observe them, this is where power is. Now, first off, let's go a little bit deeper here. With an idea that I think can completely transform your life. And that is this: that the less thoughts you think, the higher your vibration. The more present you are and the more you observe your thoughts, the more you're in a flow state and you're accepting of the moment and you're at one with what is. And ultimately, you are the I Am presence. And what's interesting about this is when I'm in a flow state, when I'm at a live event speaking, when I'm doing something I love, I'm not thinking. It's just happening. And part of this is because every single one of us is a divine spiritual being living a temporary human experience, but we've used our ego to survive. And our ego includes our mind, and our ego includes our mind, which use these protective patterns to regulate the nervous system. And it feels burden and it feels like resistance. And that's why a huge part of this is observing the thoughts, becoming aware of the thoughts, letting them be there, not trying to control them. 'Cause I say think less thoughts, you're like, I need to think less thoughts. So I need to, that'll create more resistance. You have to be okay with having lots of thoughts, observing them, and with time they begin to lose momentum because remember, There's a momentum to thinking. There's a momentum to patterns, and that momentum has been keeping you in familiar energy over and over again. So this is why this energy can completely shift everything in your life. And what I do is I have a process. I'll show you in a minute my process of going from contraction to open. I think completely change your life as well. Something I teach and it's something that's a core part of like what I'm putting out in the world is helping people go from contraction to protection to neutrality to open and flow. And I'll show you that in a moment. But first, realize that neutrality is the key of observation here. It's the key of observing your patterns. It's the key of observing what's really blocking you. And what, so for me, back as a people pleaser, it was, The awareness of the people-pleasing pattern, the awareness of the desire to ease tension or to do what other people want, but also I was abandoning me. And as I recommitted to me being open and authentic, that then meant there were times I expressed myself where there could have been rejection, there could have been tension, but then the lesson was that that was not my thing to manage. I integrated the pattern. And as I integrated the pattern, I then did not care whether the reality changed. Because I felt safe in my own body. So even if somebody else had tension, okay, of course I'd want— it's nicer when you have more positive, happy interactions with people, but I was good either way because I had integrated the energy. So do you see the difference here in the energy? There's a different energy from when you are waiting for the mere reality to change, or if you can be open and simply decide to stay open. And these protective patterns you have, they're patterns, they're patterns, but they're not you. I'm here to show you that you— that they're not you. They're just a story and a belief about who you are and the thing that is blocking you from the reality you want. It's the patterns, it's the familiar self, it's the momentum. And it's the belief that that's who you are. Any moment you can make a shift, any moment you can change. But if you keep waiting for the mirror of reality to reflect something back to you, then guess what? You will keep waiting, you will keep staying in that energy, feeling like you're trapped when you're not. At any moment you can open, at any moment you can express the real you. And the way out of a lot of these patterns, by the way, is actually in. It's letting yourself feel the emotion under the surface. It's allowing yourself to observe them, to feel it, and then to still lean into that tension, lean into the next new choice. I call that choice a micro shift, little shift that you make every day that changes your identity over time. That changes so much. But first off, let's talk about this now for a moment. So this right here is this idea comes from a book called Reality Transurfing, and basically it's called pendulums. Now this idea, this book was written by a Russian quantum physicist, has to do with this idea that in the alternative space is every reality we can imagine already exists. It's simply vibrating at a different frequency that we can only perceive of if we match it. It's like radio frequencies, right? 105 FM and 92 AM, like all these frequencies exist. You just tune to it. And the key for many people is understanding that as you observe, that's where the power is out of the reaction. Now, one of the things it talks about is that what you want already exists. It's in what is called the alternative space. But the thing that really blocks us from experiencing it is this idea called pendulums. And a pendulum is, think of it like a thought form or a thought structure. And a thought form or a thought structure is connected to the people in our society and different thought forms that build when many people are focused on one thing. So when you think of political parties, when you think of different institutions and companies, when you think of brands, these are all different thought forms with many people focused on that one thing. This YouTube channel is also a pendulum. I just believe it's a more positive pendulum, but nonetheless, it's a pendulum. The book itself is a pendulum. And what happens is when many people are focused on one thing, it builds a certain energy. And what happens is many people then become, in a way, they start thinking the thoughts of the pendulum that kind of takes over and gets them reactive. This is why when you see people get super passionate about sports teams and get very angry when they lose, there's a pendulum there at place. And if you go to a game, you can feel the energy of the pendulum. If you watch a game, you could feel the energy in the pendulum. So the key to this is that you can never actually defeat a pendulum. You can only observe the pendulum because normally there's trigger, reaction, and if you feed it, this is it. You trigger, you get reacted, and you feed it. So whether you fight someone you don't like, and if there's someone you don't like in politics or someone you don't like somewhere else, by not liking it, you're literally sending it energy and feeding the pendulum, which has it rock more and more. And it gets you activated, doesn't it? The key to defeating this energy is neutrality, observing it, not just denying it, but like observing it, ignoring the emotional reaction and the belief that it has to have power over you. That's when you begin to become more free. So this is something you could become aware of, of how your nervous system responds to social media, how your nervous system responds to the reality that you're seeing, and start asking yourself the question, the content you consume, how is that influencing your belief of the world? 'Cause I'll tell you what, You watch a show like, what's everyone watching right now? Tell Me Lies. You watch a show like that with narcissists and you're gonna think everyone's cheating on each other and everyone's narcissistic. How does that frame your worldview? There's things you watch that have an effect on your nervous system and your beliefs. So I'd have a good understanding of how that affects you in different ways. So a very simple thing to understand is that what you are doing in this process is moving from contraction. You are moving from contraction into that of openness. And what I'm going to show you now is I'm going to show you a simple process you can use, lose, use that will help you to do this. So when you move from contraction to protection to neutrality to openness, that's what changes your life. And contraction is when you feel energy inside of your body, you feel the loss of safety, and then we avoid the emotions. This is when we get stuck and we're like, we want the mirror to change, but it's like we're still in contraction or protection. Protection is the level where we have protective patterns and mechanisms like trying to control reality, overthinking, overgiving, et cetera, which are ways to regulate the nervous system. And neutrality is where power starts to happen. This is where you start to observe what's happening. You stay with it, and then you make the choice to open. And when you do this consistently, that's when your reality will really begin to change because literally what you are doing is opening up your energy, not so that reality shifts because you choose to be open. So remember, similar to what we've heard about enlightenment, that we are naturally enlightened. We are naturally love, joy, and peace. The only thing that keeps us from those states of consciousness is our attachment. It's our patterns. It's our belief in who we are. And that's why many enlightened people say that it's a joke. They laugh when they become enlightened because they were trying so hard. They were seeking so hard, but in actuality, they are that which they were seeking. They just had to remove the corks. They just had to remove the blocks. And when you think of the analogy too, it was like a cork on top of the ocean. You put it underneath the surface and you put resistance on it. What happens? It goes down. How do you get it to raise back up? You simply let go. When you let go, it naturally goes back up. and it naturally is there because that's who it is. And with reality, you are love, joy, and peace. That's who you are. Anything else is something you can observe. It's something you could see what this pattern is reflecting back to you. And what you can do is then make the choice to open. And as you do, people will come into your life that will reflect that energy back. Now, if you want to go deeper and you want to learn step by step how to do this, This is something I do in what is called the Shift Academy, which is a step-by-step process of helping you shift into this new you.
