The Video that broke you out of your box (and changed your life forever)

In this impromptu motivational monologue, Aaron Doughty shares a personal journey from a fearful, identity‑bound life—working a 9‑to‑5 shoe‑sales job, coping with ADHD, and avoiding public exposure—to becoming a full‑time YouTuber, traveler, and live‑event speaker. He explains how our self‑concept operates on autopilot, driven by the ego’s survival‑focused desire for comfort, which he likens to living inside a "box." By deliberately choosing actions that feel unfamiliar—publishing videos that scare him, practicing daily meditation, walking barefoot on grass, trying yoga, and engaging with new people—he demonstrates how stepping into the unknown rewires identity, unlocks growth, and creates new opportunities. The talk emphasizes awareness of limiting beliefs, taking responsibility for one’s self‑definition, and actively redefining oneself through uncomfortable experiences, culminating in a call to action for viewers to break out of their own boxes.

If I were to look at myself and the way that I live now, you're making daily videos on YouTube, doing different things when it comes to traveling the world, doing live events. These things to my old identity were very fearful. These things were at one point in my life not familiar. If I even thought of putting a video out to where a lot of people could see, it would freak me out. Actually, the first video I ever put out on YouTube, I put it out, immediately called my mom and asked my mom to like my, my, my video on Facebook because I was embarrassed that no one else was going to like it. I was also very much caring what people think, and I was always reading the comments. Every like, I'd like watch the views go up like 3 views an hour, and I'd— it was like something I was like very fearful of getting any type of negative, uh, feedback. However, if I look at my reality now where I travel the world, do what I love, do events, do, um, uh, videos, then I could see that this at one point in my life was completely unfamiliar. But realize that what is familiar is just how we've consistently thought, felt, and acted, that's just on autopilot. And what'll happen is we're going to feel fearful of anything that's outside of what we consistently think, feel, and act, and how we define ourself. So one thing that's very important to do is to become aware of how we define ourself, but also realize that where the magic happens is stepping into the unknown. The thing you're probably afraid to do is gonna be the thing that gives you the biggest result because that thing that you're afraid to do is what's gonna break you out of that old identity. Our identity, the way we see ourself, What is habitual, what we've already wired in is on autopilot and it's in a survival mechanism. It's not looking to thrive, it's looking to just survive. So when we do something outside of that, it's fearful and that's stretching us beyond where we currently have been, how we've currently thought, felt, and acted. And I've remembered almost any YouTube video I've been afraid to put out. I made a video on the Great Awakening. I was afraid to put that video out. And because of that thing, and I was like, do I define myself as this kind of person that puts out this kind of content? I said, well, do I feel authentically guided to put this out? I was like, yes. I put out that video, goes viral. Almost any time I've put out a YouTube video that I was afraid to put out because it's not a part of my identity, those are the videos that tend to do very, very well. I don't know why, they just do. The thing that I do that I'm most afraid to do tends to be the thing that breaks me out of that identity. I was at one point on YouTube considered the law of attraction YouTuber. So I remember I wanted to make videos on esoteric stuff like starseeds and this stuff that I knew people were gonna think was very woo-woo and out there. But guess what? That was the video I was afraid to do. So guess what I did? I said, okay, I'm making that video and I'm putting it out. Guess what? Explosion of growth. When you challenge your identity, you get out of the autopilot mind and then you get into a new way of being. My old identity as well is I used to work a 9 to 5 job selling women's shoes and I would walk around work and I'd be like, I'd mess with customers, I'd have like, I'd have a lot of fun. I was very loud, obnoxious. I'm just so loud, but in a different way now. I'm much more grounded now. At least that's what I like to think. But I used to never see, I used to have what's called ADHD and I took Adderall for it, the prescription drug for it, but it had very hard side effects of you couldn't eat very much, you couldn't sleep very much. So eventually I went online and I learned about this stuff called meditation. And guess what? Meditation, I looked at, I was like, this doesn't sound like me. Sit down and observe my thoughts? How boring. I don't wanna do that. But guess what happened? Because it was the thing that my identity didn't wanna do, I did it and it completely changed my life. I then also started to redefine myself. I'm like, well, I used to define myself as having ADHD and all this energy and having this big imbalance and this disorder. And then what I did is I said, you know what, I'm gonna redefine this. I'm gonna meditate every day for 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes at night, and I'm gonna see myself as having balanced energy and I'm gonna walk barefoot on grass to balance out my energy if I feel like I have too much. I completely redefine myself. So almost any transformation you're gonna make in your life is from a redef— redefining a sense of identity, a redefining of who you believe you are. I used to believe that I had to work a 9-to-5 job, and a lot of people don't— aren't aware of this. They may say, well, how do I know what I believe about myself and how I see myself? Your reality right now on the outside is equal to that which you see yourself and to that which you are thinking, feeling, and acting. So if you wanna know where your beliefs are, look at your life right now. And it's okay, it's okay if you're living a life and you're not experiencing what you want. The first step is becoming aware of it. So for example, I was working that 9 to 5 job and I could have said, well, what's my current limiting belief and what do I currently believe about myself? Well, obviously I believe I have to have a 9 to 5 job even though I knew that I wasn't passionate. I had a sales commission job because I knew I wanted to at least have some control over my paycheck. And then eventually I made a new choice about who I was. I became aware of that. I said, you know what, I'm going to be this full-time YouTuber. I imagined and reverse engineered that future version of me. And I saw that Aaron, the version of me that was living my dream life, was making videos on YouTube, was traveling the world, and doing pretty much what I'm doing now. And I said, okay, what if I can be that person before I am that person? And I'm gonna be that person because I know it's more authentic. So even though I was working that 9-to-5 job, working 40 hours a week, I started making the daily videos on YouTube. I literally bridged that identity. So old identity, new identity. The old identity, you have need to unwire, unfamiliarize, and unlearn. And you got to recognize the truth. You've been in a box. It's a very comfortable box. It's still a box. And it's funny, we all live in houses. This is a box. If I want to go outside, then it's more expansive. I can see the trees and I can see the sky, but in here it's a box. And then you go into a box in your car and then you go drive somewhere and then you get into another box and we're all in these boxes and we don't realize that our identity itself is a box. Who you see yourself, the bridge of what's comfortable for you and you say, ooh, ooh, ooh, I'm not gonna do that, that's not who I am. Guess what? That's exactly what's gonna keep you in survival mode. Remember, yo ego does not want you to thrive. Your ego just wants you to survive, that's it. Nothing more. Your ego is not an overachiever. Your ego literally is saying, I just want to remain the same. I just want to be the same person I was yesterday today, because that is safe. That is very comfortable. It just feels so good. It feels so good to be the same every single day. And unless you define yourself as someone that likes uncertainty, then in that case you're like, I can't do the same things every day. I gotta go do some adventure. Because this is the way I define myself. So the key to this is being aware that you gotta become aware of the box that you're in. You're in a box right now. You're probably in a box in your car. You're probably in your car. You're probably in your house. You're probably at your job. You're probably in a box. The only way you're not gonna be in a box is if you're outside on the grass or something like that. Most likely you're listening to me right now in a box and you got a box of your identity. For the way you see yourself. You may see yourself as only being able to make $50K a year. You may see yourself as only able to be in a relationship with someone that you don't really care about. You may see yourself as somebody that's being treated a certain way or someone that's single, or you may see yourself as somebody that's not able to be successful, somebody that has to go to school to be successful 'cause that's what your parents told you to do. All your parents did was give you a little box. Hey Jimmy, come over here, get in the box. Isn't the box comfortable? Don't you like being in the box? Okay, so if you wanna be successful, you gotta stay in your box and you gotta have a box job and listen to a box. See what I mean? And then we say, okay, okay, I wanna make my parents happy because my parents, they know best. I mean, it's natural. Our parents literally, by the way, we think are gods. When we're born, we look to all of our sense of survival to our parents. So whatever our parents say, we think is law. And if your parent tells you growing up, you are meant to be seen and not heard, you're gonna believe it. And then even after you're not a kid anymore, you might be 25 years old, you might be in that board meeting and the manager may say, hey Carolyn, what do you think about what's going on right now or this in the company or that? And you're like, I have nothing to say. I'm meant to be seen, not heard. Can you see me? You see me? And then it's like, come on, get out of the box. But you see, you thought your parents were God growing up. You literally think your parents are like the end-all be-all. Most of us do because of the way that the dynamics are. The key is being aware of that, breaking out of it. It's time to break out of that old identity, okay? It's not okay to be in a box no more. Go outside your box. Go outside, walk barefoot on grass, be free. Okay, be free and just realize that you are an eternal spiritual being that has been living in a box that you have agreed to. Yes, you have to take responsibility for being in the box too. That's the thing. Otherwise it's like, you did this to me, mom, mom did this to me, dad, dad, you, you, it's your fault, your limiting beliefs caught on to me. No, you sign— what you do is you become aware of it. You take responsibility for it. All responsibility is, is the ability to respond, to make a new meaning, to make a new meaning about something, and then to agree. Yeah, I agreed to this in the past. I don't agree to it no more. You can change it. So one of the biggest things you'll ever learn, if you wanna bridge your reality to your new reality, you gotta start with your identity and you gotta get uncomfortable. The node is right here. The node is right here. How you think, feel, and act. What do you consistently do? Well, I go every Thursday, I go to my friend's house and we just chill and play video games. It's so much fun. Yeah. Well, guess what? You're probably not gonna create anything new and great in your life because it's just in the autopilot mind. Those are just things you've done and they're comfortable. But if you want to create something new, you got to get into the unknown. You got to go hang out with Mountain Bike Carl, who's like doing— he's like shredding the gnar, bro, going on the mountains and stuff. That's something you've never done before. You might be shredding the mountains, bro. You might be going down the mountain, just freaking having so much fun. And guess what happens? Nothing dangerous. Well, it may be a little dangerous, but guess what could happen? It's like you're going down the mountain and then it's like somebody you meet is like there, and then it's like this great interaction and like, you know what, I own a company, I want to be a business partner with you, bro. Like, I know you'd be like shredding the gnar so good, dude, but let's like go into business together, man. We could own a franchise or something. And then it's like, dude, you stepped into the unknown, you went out with Mountain Bike Carl, and guess what happened? Mountain Bike Carl now is your business partner, and you don't just shred the gnar, bro. You also shred the gnar, and then you make the paper so you can buy more gnar, or buy more— I don't get a bike and go gnar more. Okay, so basically what I'm sharing with you is if you want to create anything magical in your life, anything at all, all you got to do is break out of the old identity. Break out of the old identity. It's just realize the truth. Y'all in a box. Y'all in a box. This box is very comfortable. I know, because remember, that box is what the ego likes, because the ego just wants you to survive. The ego does not want you to thrive. I promise. The ego just like, this is comfortable, I like this box, okay, this is cool. Here's what you got to do though. You got to step out of the box, and you got to push yourself to step out of things that your old identity would have never done. Now my identity is like, I'm comfortable making YouTube videos, doing— having an email list, doing all these internet stuff. And guess what? That's what I wanna do now. I wanna break out of this little box of having to make videos every single day, do all this stuff. I wanna start doing live events. So what does that mean? I gotta jump head on into live events and be that identity now. Let it in. I gotta wire it in. Gotta literally do an event. I'm doing an event. I'm doing an event, okay? October, I'm doing an event in Sedona. New experience, all right? New experiences, new experiences that your old identity would've never done. I would have never, ever, ever done. And then once you find out that experience that your old identity would never done, you begin to redefine yourself. If you're this shy person, right? And you've been, you just agreed that at a certain point in your life, you're like, I'm a shy person. This is who I am. And maybe you stem it back even more. And at a certain point in your past, your dad's like, you're meant to be seen and not heard. Or you did something, you got shut down and you just decided that's who you were now. But then what happens? Is eventually something amazing happens. You become aware that, okay, it is comfortable for me to stay at home and not do, not do anything, but I would have never before gone to that party. I would have never gone to a coffee shop and talked to the person in line next to me. That's not my identity. If you were to do that once, you'd be like, ooh, this feels a little bit different. Yes, it's kind of unfamiliar. It feels a little scary. Hey, what's the weather like? And they're like, whoa. And you're like, oh, see, I need to be shy. No, you don't need to be shy. You just asked what the weather was like kind of freakishly because you weren't used to it yet. Then you get used to it. You're like, yo, what's the weather like? Or I don't know, what do you say? You're like, huh, huh, it's great weather out there, isn't it? I don't know, whatever, like surface level stuff people say nowadays. But the more you do it, the more you then redefine yourself. The more you redefine yourself. And the more you redefine yourself, the more then a whole new opportunity, whole new possibilities open. If you've never done yoga before because you say, I'm just not that kind of person that does yoga, then guess what? I recommend you go do some yoga because then you break out of your identity. Your identity before is, I don't do yoga, that's not comfortable. And really all that is is the ego saying, I'm not familiar. It's my best on it. That's not in my box. That's not in my box. Yoga's not in my box. And then what you got to do is once you do that, you're like, you're like, oh man, this is kind of uncomfortable. I got to like do these poses. And you're like, oh, actually this is kind of, this is kind of interesting. There's some pretty hot people around me. Oh, this is really cool. And there's a whole new world. And then you meet your frickin soulmate right next to you doing downward dog or whatever, camel pose or cobra. Okay, you ever been in cobra pose and hit on someone? It's very awkward. It's like, it's like you're like, hey, I don't know, it's a visual that came to my mind. Um, the best thing that you can possibly do, get into the unknown. Let this be the video that you watched where you then said to yourself, oh my goodness, I realize I live in a box. I live in a box and it is super, super comfortable and I'm so used to living in this little box and I've been so close-minded that anytime anyone's like, hey, you want to do some outside the box? Like, no, This box is comfortable. I don't do anything outside the box. And now you realize you got to get outside the freaking box. So the way you get outside the freaking box is by liking this video. If you guys like this video yet, like this video if you liked it. Subscribe if you haven't already because I got lots more videos like this coming. This video was completely impromptu, spontaneous. I just decided to make it. I don't know what the title is yet. If you like these random little rant videos, let me know. It was unknown. It was uncertain. I'm used to like having them. I'm used to having like, hey guys, look, I have, I have 3 things for you today. 3 things you must know for 2021. Leap into the new. It's like a new time on the planet. Leap into it. Don't be afraid to leap into the new. Let go of the old. I know your stinky little box, just let it go. So I have more than just those videos. If you like this video, like it, share it, and become that new identity by getting uncomfortable. With that being said, peace, much love, and namaste.
