Hommage aux Serveuses et Serveurs : Lâchez les pourboires !

A first-person YouTube monologue in which the speaker recounts volunteering as a waiter at a charity gala dinner. They describe the intense physical strain (sore legs, shoulders, back), the fast-paced coordination among multiple servers, the memory demands of tracking orders/tables, and challenging guest interactions. The speaker concludes by urging people to volunteer when they can and to be more patient and appreciative of restaurant waitstaff.
Good evening, my friends. I've just returned from an extraordinary experience that allowed me to experience firsthand the difficulties of being a waiter, a job I'd like to pay tribute to this evening. It's already an extremely physical job. I can't feel my legs anymore. There's a whole half of my body that I can't feel. My shoulders hurt, my arms hurt. In fact, there's an association that I belong to that collects. Collects. Collects, Collects, collects money for charitable causes such as children with epilepsy, elderly people in need and so on. And tonight they organized a gala dinner precisely to raise money. They needed help. So, in fact, I was part of a group of people who decided to give their time tonight to help. That's how I discovered this profession. So as I was telling you, it's a physical job. It's also a job that requires a lot of tact and diplomacy. We hear a lot of things. I was surprised. We're probably even the psychologists of some people. You know, just before I finished, there was a woman. She was sitting there, very distinguished, well dressed, about 50 years old. And then I went to her table. I wanted to know if she needed anything. And then she said to me, straight in the eyes, she had been drinking a little. She told me her husband was in the bathroom. She said to me, he's an. She said, I would never have married him if I knew what an he was. And I was quite surprised because I didn't expect this kind of human experience in this job. This job also takes a lot of abuse. You have to be fast. You. You have to. It's quite physical, actually. That is to say, at the beginning, for example, there were tables. So these tables were served by eight waitresses at a time. So imagine the scene. There are eight live camps on circular tables. So there were a lot of circular taps. And in fact, the eight live camps all used them at the same time. So, for example, there were. There were six different dishes. So when they arrived with a dish, uh, well, the waitresses surrounded the table. And then all at the same time, she served that table there. And then she left. And in fact, when they arrived, well, there were nine of them. They were not eight because they were preceded by one who led the way. And then I was in the middle of serving at a table. I was a little bit. I had my back turned. I didn't see the scene. And then I got a punch in the lower back. That means just get lost. And in fact, it hits you quite a bit with your elbows and everything. So you have to be quick, you have to have. You have to scan, you have to want to. You have to be able to move out of the way of others very quickly, not to disturb them, to make yourself small, to be quick. You also have to have an insane memory. Because, for example, when you arrived at a table, there was one and he said to me, I would like to have a glass of Coke with lemon and without ice. Another one said to me, I would like to have a big bottle of sparkling water. I was walking and another table stopped me. Could I have a small bottle of still water on the way? I said, yes, yes, yes to everyone. Especially since, as I mentioned one night there, the guys weren't paying. That meant I wasn't supposed to collect anything. So I told them, yes, I'll go get all that. After that, I don't remember who wanted to believe, who needed crosses. That's what you have to remember. You have to remember. You have to remember faces. Or else. I started to remember the table number, for example, table number 16. He asked me for this thing. Then I go to table number 16 and only then do something else. No, I'm telling you, it's an extraordinary job. I didn't realize how difficult it was until I was exposed to it as part of this volunteering tonight. But in any case, I'd like to tell you two things. First, I find it enriching to give of your time. If you can give your time to anything, for example, you can go to associations, you can go to a home for the elderly, go play chess with them, or play cards or whatever, do what you can. Everyone has their own level. Do it once in your life, or do it once a month, once every three days, whenever you can. But everything we can do for each other as humans already helps. And secondly, the next time you go to a restaurant, and I know it has changed my outlook, honestly, tonight my outlook has changed. I will be more patient, I will be more accommodating. And I think we should all leave more time to drink, because it really is extremely physical. I assure you it is mentally and physically that drains you. It drains you. So that's what I wanted to share with you and pay tribute to this profession. Thank you for listening to this video so far. And I'm going to sleep now. And I'll come back in another one. I'll come back in another one. And by the way, I'd like to tell you it's quite hard to. It's not hard, it's very special when you're in an atmosphere and everyone has, you know, over time, people really started to leave. Hey, the drinks, well, it flowed freely. And then when you're sober, because you're serving, you're not there to get drunk by the mile. But after a while, when people have a drink in their nose, it becomes. It becomes quite. It becomes quite difficult to. To manage at times. It's very special when you're sober in an environment where everyone is over the legal limit to drive. In any case, what's important is that a lot of money was raised for very interesting causes tonight. And there you have it. Thank you.
