How AI Can Organize Your Next Trip
19 Sept 2024 · 5 min
Brittany Long explains how to use AI (e.g., ChatGPT or Claude) to create efficient, personalized packing lists. She recommends telling the model how to act (organization pro, travel hacker, life coach), specifying trip details and desired outcomes (comfort, style), asking the model to pose clarifying questions, then having it generate a copy-pastable packing checklist — illustrated with a Disney cruise to the Bahamas example.

All right, calling all last minute packers or people who like to pack early and just wanna be more efficient. This episode is for you. While AI can't fold your laundry or pack your clothes for you yet, it can help you get your packing list ready and make sure that you're not missing anything. Now, what I tend to do when I'm packing on my own is overpack. And when I say overpack, really overpack to the point that I got these vacuum sealed bags so that I could pack more. But the same problem always happens. It doesn't matter if I have just a few things or a lot of things. I always feel like I don't know what to wear and I always feel like I'm forgetting something. And I like using AI to help me figure out what to pack so that I'm not feeling like I'm forgetting something and also so that I'm more efficient with the stuff I am packing. And what you can do is this. As usual, we're going to start by telling ChatGPT or Claude how we want it to behave, how we want it to act or think. Think in quotations. And in this particular case I'm going to say I wanted to think like a organization pro, like a travel hacker, and also like a life coach. Now you don't have to add the life coach one in there, but I add that in because usually if I am struggling with what to pack, especially if it's for an event and not a vacation, I overthink it and I'm like, oh, if I wear this, then this. And anyway, it's just a lot of like head trash that kind of comes up. And if that ever happens to you, then having to act like a life coach too, so that you can say, oh, I don't know about this one because of this thing, it can help you sort out the feelings that are coming up. So anyway, all right, we're going to say I want you to act like a and then how we want it to act and then we're going to say what we're doing. So I'm going on a trip to wherever. So we're about to go on a Disney cruise. So for me I'll say we are going on a Disney cruise to the Bahamas and I want your help figuring out what to pack so that I can be as efficient as possible, save as much room as possible, but still feel really comfortable and also feel like I'm looking my best. So you want to tell it in that portion exactly what it is that you are looking for so what's the outcome that you want? So for mine, I said, I think I said comfortable and I wanted to feel my best, look my best. But still comfort is going to be really important to me. And so you want to think about what is it that you want out of this you're packing. Is it to look professional? Is it to feel comfortable, like you're an authority in your space? That would be more if I was going to like a conference or something like that. But however it is that you want to feel, look, think, whatever, that's the outcome that we want to tell ChatGPT so that it has a better idea of what exactly to add in or remove. You'll also want to tell it if there's anything specific that you're doing. So for example, I'm going to be swimming multiple times throughout the trip, probably multiple times a day. So I'm going to say those things because I'm thinking I might need more than one swimming suit. Anything that's like a special, special instance that it may not pick up on, I'm going to put in there. So for the cruise, for example, I'm going to say there's one night where we're going to get dressed up really nice. Rest of the time, can be pretty, be more casual, can even say some of the stuff that I'm thinking about or some of the stuff that's in there. I'm also going to say is there anything else that I've forgotten? And I'm also going to ask ChatGPT to ask me questions because without a doubt there's going to be stuff that I've forgotten because we only know what we know. We can only see through our own lens of experiences or what we've seen other people experience. And so in addition to everything that I've said, I'll end it with you can ask me clarifying questions or questions to better understand what it is that I'll be doing. Then I can ask follow up questions there by asking or by having ChatGPT ask us questions can help not only it helps clarify for ChatGPT, but I found that by doing this it often clarifies for me too. I use this a lot more for business than I do for my personal life. But yeah, by having, by asking, having it ask me questions, it really gives me a lot more clarity than without doing that. It's like having a brainstorming buddy 24, 7. After it's come up with some ideas, we'll say yes or no to them and then from there, we'll say, okay, now I want you to create a list for me that I can just copy, paste, and print and cross out as I go, or put into a Google Doc and cross out as I go, however you like to do that, and then that's it. And I find this really helpful, especially if I'm packing for more than one person. So if I'm packing for me and my daughter, it's really helpful because I don't want to forget anything. I'm packing for an event that I'm running. Typically, if I'm running an event, there's a lot more going on in my head, a lot more than I need to kind of thinking about. And so it's really helpful, especially those times when my brain isn't completely there on that particular task. All right, everybody, that's the end of today's episode. My name is Brittany Long.
