Reflection and Goal Setting with AI
19 Dec 2024 · 5 min
Podcast episode (host: Brittany Long) about using AI tools (specifically ChatGPT) to reflect on the past year and plan goals for the coming year. The host provides concrete example prompts to (a) ask AI to surface unnoticed patterns, values, accomplishments, and encouragement, and (b) generate realistic quarterly goals and day-to-day project-manager style steps to reach them. She also advises planning at a quarterly level rather than mapping the entire year, promotes an upcoming workshop (“Gamify Your Business”) with replay and a gameboard template, and repeatedly emphasizes using one’s own judgment alongside AI suggestions.

Time to bring in the new year. And that means one thing. Time for reflection. Time for two things. Time for reflection and time for figuring out what you want your path forward to look like. Now, if you're using ChatGPT on the daily like I am, and you are telling it a lot, not only about what you're doing in your business, but also in your life, how you're feeling, what your experience is looking like that year, the ups and the downs, if you're telling it all of that, then asking it to reflect is going to give you a lot of really interesting information. I would not do this right before a meeting or right before you have to go out and do something because you might get a little bit teary eyed about it. So here's a few prompts that I would use to help or have ChatGPT help you reflect on your year and make plans for this coming year. Please review everything we've talked about this year and tell me what you've noticed about me that I probably haven't yet noticed about myself. Help me get clear on what my values have been this year, what my accomplishments have been, and the ways I've changed that I should be really proud of. Now, if you're feeling especially entrepreneurial about the end of the year, in other words, if you're feeling like, if you're feeling like you set these giant goals, you didn't hit them and you're feeling kind of crazy about it, which a lot of entrepreneurs seem to do, also ask it to give you a little bit of encouragement. You can even say a little nervous that I didn't accomplish as much as I wanted to this year. I'm feeling kind of about it. Can you give me some encouragement so that I feel better? Give me some encouragement so that I can see what I actually accomplished this year versus what my negativity bias is saying. Now, once you have that, you can go into your next year prompts, which would be something like this. Now I want you to review what I told you about my goals and values and I want you to help me plan out what I want for next year. I want you to help me reflect back to me realistic goals that I probably want to hit based on our conversations. And I want you to help me come up with a plan to hit those goals. I want you to think like a project manager and tell me exactly what steps to take every single day to get to those goals. Now, it's not going to give you the whole year's worth. It'll probably give you 60 days, 90 days, you can ask it to continue on. I find it best to not try to plan the whole year, but just have overarching. Like, all right, quarter one, here's what I want to accomplish. Quarter two, quarter three, quarter four Because I find that sometimes things will change, especially depending on the niche that you're in, it may change faster or slower. And so having everything planned out is honestly, in my opinion, just a little bit of a waste of time. So that's why I start with just planning out quarter one, quarter two, or at least planning it out at that level of depth and that level of specificity. Now I do have a workshop coming up called Gamify youy Business. This is for those of you who know that you get more done is going to be live, but you'll be able to get the replay and we cover things like how to plan your year, the kind of things that you need to be doing every single month, and then how to turn into a game. I actually turned mine into a game board that I cross off when I have finished things and help me get more done. You'll even give the gameboard template so that if you want to do that too, you don't have to spend a ton of time figuring it out. I'll put a link to that below in the show Notes. Now, let's say you're watching this In March, I will have the replay available as well. So even if you can't make it live, you can watch the On Demand once We finish it December 30th. Other questions you might want to ask the AI tools that you're using, specifically if you're using ChatGPT because of the memory feature might be what's one thing other people probably know about me that I don't acknowledge myself? What's the biggest thing I can do differently this year that'll have the biggest impact on my business? What's the smallest thing I could adjust this year that would have the biggest impact on my business? Based on what you know about me and my offers, why do you think people love working with me? What do you think I've done really, really well? Is there anything you think I've done or haven't done that's held me back from hitting my goals? If you had to pretend to be me from a year from now, what would you tell me today based on what you know about me and my current trajectory, keeping into consideration what my goals are based on this year and what you know about me, how long do you think it'll take until I reach the goals that I want to reach. And if you haven't shared your goals with it lately, I would share your goals with it. So it's very clear on what those goals are. Is there anything I should be doing this year to help increase my fulfillment based on what you know about me and here when I'm talking about fulfillment, I mean satisfaction with life and with meaning and purpose. Speaking of purpose, based on what you know about me, what would you say my purpose in life is and do my values and goals align with it now? Full disclaimer. You always want to use your own judgment, your own thoughts with this. You're not just using what ChatGPT or Claude says. Um, but I have found this really helpful as I'm reflecting on the the previous year going into the next year to start thinking about some of these things. These are things that I might not always think about because I have other stuff late being a parent, all that. Yeah, I can really start to think more from that high level instead of only thinking from the person who has to get stuff done. My name is Brittany Long. I'm the creator of AI200K and I'll talk to you next time.
