How AI Can Personalize Your Workout Plan
17 Sept 2024 · 7 min
This single-episode podcast by Brittany Long explains how she uses AI (e.g., ChatGPT) to create a personalized, enjoyable workout program tailored to a narrow niche: people with type 2 diabetes aiming to reverse medication use and former athletes who get bored by long workouts but like challenging, varied sessions. She demonstrates the prompt components to give an AI (persona, specific goals and reasons, past obstacles and what has worked, frequency/preferences) and shares implementation tips (print/laminate plan, tick off sessions). The episode emphasizes personalization over one-size-fits-all programs and rejecting traditional diet-culture approaches.

If you are sick and tired of cookie cutter workout programs that you can't seem to stick with and you're tired of feeling like you're the problem because spoiler alert, you probably aren't. This episode about AI Uses is for you. Now, if you're anything like me, you probably tried a bunch of different workout programs and all of them have kind of fallen flat. What I found for myself is that I would try this program that's 30 days long, 75 days long, whatever, and I would get into it and I would do really well for the first maybe week and a half, two weeks, and then finishing a whole month was a challenge. And then I'd beat myself up for it. And then I would feel like there's something wrong with me, and then I'd be like, I just don't want it bad enough or whatever toxic thing I was telling myself. And then I would get really frustrated and down on myself, and then it'd be a while before I tried again. And what I realized was I'm not a lazy person in any other part of my life. So why would I think that I suddenly became a lazy person in my health and in when it relates to my body? It just wasn't adding up for me. And so I decided, I wonder if AI can help me create a workout program. And so that's what I've been playing around with here. And I'm going to share what I've been doing and how it's been working so far. I'll do an update here in a month or so so you can hear more about that, but I'm gonna give you the prompt so you can try it out too and see if it's a good fit for you. Now, the first thing we're gonna do is let chatgpt, or whatever tool you're using, know what it is that we're looking for. So I'm gonna say I want you to think like a and for me, I'm gonna say I want you to think like a physical trainer or a personal trainer who specializes in working with people that have type 2 diabetes and whose goal is to get off medication completely and heal or reverse their type 2 diabetes. Additionally, you specialize working with people who are former athletes, who want to be athletes again, who spent most of their athletic career doing team type activities or team sports, who typically get bored when there's a workout that's over 20 minutes, will sometimes not sing it out because they're so bored, who like to do hard things and be challenged by Hard things, as long as it edges up and it's interesting enough. And now that I really narrowed down the kind of thought process, I guess I have one chatgpt to have here, which, by the way, I. One of the reasons I really like using ChatGPT or another AI tool for this is because it's not often that I'd be able to find a personal trainer who specializes in this very specific niche. And so can ChatGPT to help me kind of cope with that, Able to have a different experience than if I was just working with someone who, you know, with people that have type 2 diabetes or that work with people that are athletes and want to be athletes again. And so by asking it to be really specific, I can get more of what I'm looking for. I would also probably say that in this particular instance, I would also want to work with somebody who bucks against traditional diet culture. This does not work for me. And I don't. I. I wouldn't want to work with somebody that. And that talk about, oh, you need to lose weight, you need to lose weight. Like, it's that I don't want that. And so probably add that as well to my prompt. Now that it knows how to think, I want to tell it what I want to do. So what's the outcome I'm looking for? So I'm going to say I want you to help me or I want you to create a workout program for me that is fun, enjoyable, that I'll stick with. Main goals are too. And then whatever my main goals are. So my main goals are to get stronger. My main goals are to feel like I could help a friend move all day and not out or not be really sore the next day. I could hike a mountain and not be super sore the next day. Uh, give specific details like I want to be able to go from lifting, you know, pound weights to 20 pound weights. Or you could also give examples like I did here. So in mine, for example, or my examples, they were more functional. Um, I able to do this thing. I want to be able to do this movement with my body. Your goals might be different. Whatever the outcome is that you want, though, you want to talk about it here, I also like to put Y in here as well. So I want to be able to do this thing. So that blah, blah, blah, adding that Y in helps it come up with different things for me than I. That I wouldn't expect. Once it knows how to think what the outcome is that I want and why that outcome, then we're going to Talk about common obstacles that I've encountered, uh, that have been hard to finish or hard to do it in the past. So I'm gonna talk about how I often get bored during workouts, how I have, I'm finishing it from start to finish because I feel, you know, I think about other stuff I need to get done, put other things as a hierarchy above my health. Even though I say that my health is probably my top priority. And then I'm gonna say what's worked for me in the past. So in the past, beam has helped really well. I've really been part of teens, um, trying to beat myself and smaller goals has helped as well. So anything I can think of that's helped me in the past, I'm gonna share that. I'm also gonna talk about how often I wanna do this. So for me, I, this is something I wanna do daily. That's like part of my, just part of my daily life workflow. Um, I read an article or something the other day where it talked about how folks in many other countries part like their workout is just part of their day, so they're riding their bike to work or they're into the market, whatever. But here in the US where I am, it's not that you have to drive pretty much everywhere. So you're not getting a lot of movement in your normal part of your day. And so you have to pay to. A lot of times you have to pay to do something before or after your work gives, you know, some kind of and to that, you know, this is where I'm from. These are some of those obstacles and I'd like it to be part of my day. So this is something I want to just do normally as part of my day. So I am not going to get something where it's like run 10 miles because that's not going to be a normal part of my day unless I had to go somewhere. But even then there's not like sidewalks where we are. So that would be really challenging. So I'm going to tell it all of that information and that part doesn't have to be in any specific formula. I'm basically just brain dumping my thoughts on that once it knows the frequency, like I said, I want to be doing things every day, then I'm going to create the plan for me and then it's just a matter of getting it into my daily habits. And so from here, what I would do once it gives me the plan, I'll tell it what I like and don't like. If there's anything where I'm like, oh, I don't think that's gonna work for me because of this thing that I forgot to tell you. I'll say that, but plan that. I'm like, yeah, okay, this is a great plan. I think this will work for me. From there, I would likely. Well, I will print it. What asked When I've done, you know, this kind. As I print it out and laminate it, and then I just mark things off as I go. That's worked really well for me. But whatever works for you. Maybe it's putting it into a project management board. Um, maybe having a paper that you cross off or writing it down and then crossing it off. Whatever it is that works for you, do that thing, laminating it. And so I'll go to Staples and they'll actually laminate that single page for me. Um, and things off as I go. Give it a try. Let me know how it goes. And I will talk to you soon. This has been Brittany long and we'll see you next time.
