How ChatGPT Helps Me Maintain Professional Boundaries
19 Sept 2024 · 6 min
Brittany Long describes how her people-pleasing tendencies led her to exceed client scopes and how that creates resentment, unclear service expectations, and underpayment. She explains a repeatable process where she uses ChatGPT (alongside a therapist or coach) to: evaluate whether a client request falls within contract scope, draft a firm but polite response or pricing for out-of-scope work, and coach her through the emotional resistance with therapist-style prompts. The episode ends with a call-to-action to share results on her community channels.

If you've ever had a client that seems to push the boundaries or asks you to go outside the scope of your work consistently, this episode is for you. So what I've noticed, and I'm curious if any of you have as well, you can drop it in the comments, but I've noticed that a lot of times I will start with the best intentions with folks and then I'll go above and beyond because that's just what I do or what I've done in the past. And because in at least in the past I had a lot of people pleasing tendencies. And so I would go above and beyond to feel like they were getting their money's worth. So they felt. So I really, it came down so that I felt like I was enough. And so going outside of, let's just be clear here, going outside your scope of work doesn't really help anybody. It just means you're working for less. It means there's more opportunity for resentment to build. It means there's the ability for people to be unclear about what service you're actually providing for them so that when they go to re up and you don't include the thing that you've been doing, there can be some issues there. So it's really not good for anybody. And so anytime we are people pleasing or adding in more because we feel like we're not enough, I have found, at least for me, and I can't speak for anyone else obviously, but for me, I found that it's because I'm trying to convince myself that I'm enough. There's always something underlying for me, it's not really I can say, oh, it's gonna help this person. And I feel good about that. And that can be true. And ultimately, when I look at the deeper issue there, it's because there is something going on in me where I feel like I'm not good enough. I feel like I have to do more. And that's something that I just need to work through with a therapist or mindset coach or whatever. But I'm sharing all those things because I feel like most of the time people don't talk about this, but I think it might be more prevalent than, than we let on, especially people that would identify as people pleasers or former people pleasers. So anyway, that's the first thing I guess is just to be clear that at least for me, that's been the case. And so when I'm looking at setting scope of work and boundaries, I know that if I don't set strong Ones that it's really easy for that to creep in for me. So if I don't say, hey, this is at the beginning, this is a scope of work. This is what I'm able to do for you. If you want something additional, here's how much it costs. And one of the ways that ChatGPT actually has been helping me with that is that anytime I want to provide something outside the scope of work, I will talk to ChatGPT about it in addition to my mindset coach. But I'll talk to ChatGPT about it too and be like, all right, I am really feeling this strong urge to do this and this for them. It would go above and beyond for them. They'd be so happy about it. But I know it's not a good idea. Can you please give me the reasons why? And it'll break it down for me? And so that's something that's been really helpful. But the other thing that's been helpful is what to do and what to say when somebody asks me to go outside of the scope of work and assumes that I'll do it either because I've done it in the past or because they just don't realize it's not within the scope of work. Maybe they didn't read the contract well or they had other things on their plate or whatever. It's been really helping me with that too, especially because I sometimes would feel bad for wanting to say no because it was outside the scope of work, outside what we had agreed on. And so my go to response would be yes, even if I wanted it to be no. And so then again, like I said, that's where resentment can boil and I just don't want that. I don't want resentment in my life. And one of the things that I've been saying with ChatGPT, one of the prompts I've been using for this is I'm going to tell you what it says in our contract that I provide and I want you to review it. Then I'm going to tell you what the person that I'm working with would like me to do or ask me to do, and I want you to tell me, does it fit within the scope of work? And then second, if not, how do I explain that it doesn't fit in the scope of work and and basically tell them that I'm happy to do it for X amount or recommend someone else. And so I'm going to ask it to do that and as always, I'm going to ask it to Think like a certain way. So the full prompt would look like this. I want you to think like a contract lawyer and a mediator and review this contract. Then I'm going to tell you what the person I'm working with would like me to do. I want you to analyze the contract, tell me if it is within what they're asking is within the scope of our promised work together and if not, I want you to help me come up with a way to say that it's not within our scope of work, but I'm happy to do it for X amount. And then if I'm not sure how much to charge for it, I'll just also say and I'm not sure how to charge for it, what do you think would be a fair amount? Or like a business coach, what seems like a fair amount? And then either in this prompt or a follow up prompt I will also say anything that's coming up for me. Typically it'll be a follow up prompt but every once in a while I'll do it here as a follow up prompt. Then I'll say okay, I understand this isn't within the scope of work and you want me to or you think I should say X, Y and Z is what's coming up for me. I want you to think like a therapist and mediator who specifically works with business owners who, you know, I've had people pleasing tendencies in the past and I want you to help me work through this obstacle or barrier, you know, block that I'm having. Then I want you to come up with a specific step by step plan so that I can pass it and take the necessary steps to do the thing that's going to be best for my business. And then once I talk to the person, especially we're talking through email, put in what they say to ChatGPT and ask it to help me craft a response. Helps me take out a lot of the emotion that I might be feeling otherwise I don't want to continue feeling. And so I like doing that as well because it takes out the emotion and helps me think a little bit more objectively. Give this a try and if it helps, let me know. Take a screenshot and share it with me on social impact driven AI. And then I also have Lean of Evergreen as well. This has been Brittany long, creator of AI to 100k and I will talk to you soon.
