How to Make Your Expertise Understandable with AI
11 Jul 2024 · 5 min
Brittany Long (host) explains a practical workflow for turning expert tacit knowledge into beginner-friendly, step-by-step guidance using AI. She recommends recording oneself (via ChatGPT mobile voice or a Loom screencast), transcribing the recording, and feeding the transcript into ChatGPT to produce simplified explanations, alternate explanations, decision trees, and reusable content (blog posts, custom GPTs). The approach targets service providers, coaches, and course creators who struggle to translate advanced practice into teachable steps.

What's the thing that you're really good at? That people say, okay, but how do you do that? Have you ever experienced that you are telling a client, oh, just do X, Y and Z. And they're like, okay, but how? Like, where do I start? For a lot of us who are experts in our field, who have been an authority in our field for a long time, going from where you're at now to trying to explain it out to people who are just starting, or people who just haven't had as much practice or experience with it as you have can be really challenging. A lot of times you're going to be talking at this higher level that they just haven't reached yet, and you're trying to give them a shortcut, but they need a few missing pieces. So what can you do when that happens? In the past, if you're like me, I would spend a really long time trying to figure out how to say it in a different way, how to explain it. But now I actually can get it all done in about two minutes. And this flow. First you're going to go to the mobile version of ChatGPT. You're going to press the headphones that are in the bottom right hand corner and then you're going to start talking out what it is that you do step by step. Now, another way that you can do this is record a loom video of you actually doing it and talking it out step by step and specifically talking about why you're doing what you're doing. Now, that's my favorite way to do it with a loom video. Loom is like a screen share software. And the reason that's my favorite way is because I find that if I'm actually doing the thing that I'm talking about that I tend to miss fewer steps. And by doing it that way you can get step by step. And then it's easier to talk about what you're doing while you're doing it instead of hoping that you remember. So after I record the video or record the audio, the next thing I'm going to do is put the transcripts in. Now, if you're using the headphone, Little icon, and ChatGPT, the mobile version, you don't need to put transcripts in. It's already in there for you. But if you're using the like a loom video, you'll just copy the transcripts, put it into ChatGPT, and then basically say, I want to explain this topic in a way that makes sense for somebody who hasn't done this before. I know that there are gaps in what I'm saying or gaps in their understanding. And so I want you to help me really break it down and pretend like we're talking to somebody who's never done this before. You can even say, is there anything that I've missed or is there anything that I need to cover? When it gives you the information back, you can give feedback of, yes, that works. Or actually, I think we need to break it down even further. Pretend like this person has never done this before. They really need that step by step instructions. And then when it gives you that, you can ask it to explain it in different ways too, because, you know, understand things in different ways and learn in different ways. And one thing actually that I'm going to be doing today is creating decision tree. So essentially what I'm going to do is talk through my process. Here's what I do, here's how I do it, here's why I'm doing what I'm doing, and then I'm asking ChatGPT to turn that into a decision tree. So in other words, what should somebody be thinking when they sit down at the desk? What should they be thinking first? Okay. And then based on what they think, what's the next thing they should be thinking about? What's the next thing? And the thought of creating a decision tree myself, like from scratch, just wouldn't have time for it. I wouldn't have the energy, I wouldn't have the brain space, I wouldn't have time for it. But being able to just say what I do and then have ChatGPT organize it for me and put it into a decision tree, put it into a blog post, put into all this other content, it makes it so much more doable. This is especially helpful for those of you who are service providers, coaches, course creators, because a lot of times you've been doing something for a long time and trying to break it down and explain that to somebody who's just starting to do it, there's gonna be some disconnect there. There's gonna be some things that you don't even think about that are important for you, you know, them to kind of think about that. You wouldn't. I just feels like it's natural. Just feels like second nature or feels like, oh, everybody would do this, everybody thinks about this. Truth is, most people don't think how you think about this particular topic because they haven't done it as long, they haven't practiced it as long, they haven't gone through the trials and errors that you have, you have a really unique opportunity to teach them something and teach it in a way that meets them where they're at with the help of ChatGPT. The other thing that you can do with this too, is put that information into a GPT and then send it to your customers, whoever, and say, all right, when you're doing this thing, use this GPT to help you break it down. My name is Brittany Long. I'm the hope that I'm the host of this podcast and also the mom Entrepreneurs Using AI Podcast. Talk to you soon.
