Turning Awkwardness into Awesomeness with AI
26 Jun 2024 · 6 min
Brittany Long (host of Doable with AI) recounts a recent awkward conversation during a school drop-off that she fears she'll overthink. She explains how she uses conversational AI (ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini) as a private, practical tool to externalize the incident, explore emotions, and reframe negative self-stories. She often supplies personality-test details (INFJ, DISC, Enneagram 7w8) and situational context so the AI can tailor suggestions for letting go of rumination; she contrasts this with using a mindset coach, noting AI is quicker for small incidents. Episode closes with show/creator IDs.

Not sure if anybody else can relate to this, but sometimes I am a little bit of an overthinker, overanalyzer. And it happened today. I was dropping my kid off at school. I was talking to the person that was up front and instead of talking like a normal human, I don't know, I just felt like I was so awkward and so weird and I'm pretty sure that interaction is going to haunt me for the rest of my life because it was just so weird and I felt my brain saying just stop talking. But my mouth was like nah, let's go even harder on this. And so it was a weird interaction, a hundred percent on me. And this is yet another way that I'm using ChatGPT that I feel like is kind of weird but also really helpful for anybody. But for me as a mom entrepreneur who feels like she's awkward sometimes, it's really helpful. I don't really want to think about this the rest of my life, but I feel like I'm probably going to if I don't address it. And this isn't something that like I would feel silly bringing this to my mind side coach and being like hey, have this really inter awkward interaction. I definitely could. My mindset coach is amazing and very non judgmental and stuff but I also like, I just, I'd rather focus on the business stuff and some of the deeper stuff, not just hey, I was really awkward today and I feel weird about it. It kind of bangs. And for this I might take it to ChatGPT and say something along the lines of I have this interaction at school today. I felt like I was really awkward and I'm having a hard time like letting it go. I, I feel like I'm playing it again and again in my head and I'm not sure how to stop doing that. But I don't want to keep thinking about it. Cause in, in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter. It really wasn't. It just is what it is. And I'm sure they have plenty of awkward conversations all day every day with people. I would then ask ChatGPT to help me sort through how I'm feeling and how to let this go without continuing to overthink about it all day long. I will probably also tell ChatGPT a little bit or Claude, whatever you're using, but a little bit about my personality, anything else that it needs to know about me. So I might say I'm an INFJ on the Myers Briggs, I'm an ID on the disc test I'm 7 wing 8 for uh, I can't even think of what it's called now, but I'm gonna go through some of those like common personality tests to just have it give it a fuller picture of who I am and how I normally think. Now I'm not somebody that's usually, oh, let me put myself in this particular box. Which is one of the reasons I've taken so many personality tests, so that I can see more of a full picture. Cuz there's some things that really resonate with me, some things that don't. But overall I feel like by putting it together with all of them, it might help. And then just anything else that it needs to know. Sometimes I feel anxious when blah, blah, blah, I might add that in there or the reason that I felt like this was an awkward conversation, I might add that in there. So any kind of information that might help. But part of the reason I think this is so helpful for me is that it gets it out of my head and out of this. Like it sometimes when things happen, I will turn them into a story. They may not need to be a story, it may just be an awkward interaction and that's it. But if I'm not careful, sometimes that can, because of negativity bias, that can reinforce something that I already feel about myself or something that I already think is true about myself. So for example, I used to, I used to feel like I was good talking to people and stuff. And then there's a period of time where I was like, man, I just suck at talking to people, I'm awkward, nobody wants to hear what I have to say, I'm not good at with people. And I like became a little bit of a hermit because I started to tell myself this story that I'm not good with people, nobody wants to talk with me and stuff like that. And I just, whenever I'm talking to people, I just say dumb things and they make fun of me. Like it was this huge whole story that I was telling myself. And what I realized when I stepped back and looked at it, I realized, okay, part of this was because I was, I was trying to fit myself and how I connected with people into somebody else's box instead of just doing it in the way that felt right for me, that resonated with me, that felt aligned for me. Instead of doing that, I was trying to basically make myself like somebody else. And that obviously didn't work. I, when I realized that I was able to start unwinding that story and realizing, okay, this isn't true. This is a story I've been telling myself. What if I started to tell myself a different story? And when I started to tell myself a different story, the story that I am good with people, I do, being around people, I do find it fun and easy and energetic. And I started changing the messaging around how I was feeling. And when I had awkward conversations, instead of being like, wow, Brittany, like, what a loser. I was like, oh, that was quirky. And so just some of that language changing it was really helpful. And so I want to make sure that when these interactions happen and I start to find myself overthinking or start to overthink, instead of letting that fester and letting that continue and maybe even letting that spiral a little, sometimes, I'm getting it out of my head so that I can acknowledge, here's where there might be a story that I'm telling myself that I don't need to be telling myself or that I don't want to become part of my overall messaging, my overall story. And so talking to ChatGPT about it can be really helpful sometimes. If you have a counselor, a therapist, a. A mindset coach, something like that, I think that's great, too. But if you're like, I don't want to bring this up because it's just not. It's not, like, massive, or you have other things you want to talk about, or maybe you just want to get it out right, then, then using ChatGPT or Claude or Gemini or whatever tool it is that you want to use can be really helpful. All right, that is it for today. My name is Brittany Long. I'm the host of this podcast, the Doable Podcast, Doable with AI Podcast, and the creator of AI to A Hundred K. I will talk to you soon.
