What's up, people?
Beautiful people. Conscious people. Awakened people.
Yes.
All you people. What's up? How y' all feeling today? We got a interesting show for you today.
Isn't it always interesting?
It's always interesting. I just gotta. I just gotta highlight every time I say it that it's interesting it. Because it's always interesting, right?
I'm like, this is not the only interesting show.
No, every show is interesting.
Just making sure.
But we in some interesting times, you know. Interesting is one of my favorite words. I think.
Apparently.
I think. I think interesting.
Evidently.
I just remember one of my girls, something like, you say that a lot. Maybe I do. I'm an interesting person.
Most definitely. That's what it is you're an interesting person.
Anyway. Yeah, we got a show for you today that I think is very important, especially with the times that we are in. And it's a show about business starting and sustaining a business. Let's get to the business. You know, we're trying to get out of the traditional ways of things and thinking like employees. People want to run things and be entrepreneurs. A lot of people don't know how to start, where to start. People got ideas.
Exactly.
All kinds of passions. But some people just don't know where to start. To get out of the employee mindset and think of thinking like a boss and working for yourself.
Getting off the plantation, right? We talk about getting off that plantation to master. Goodbye.
Tell them bye.
We Audi, you know, we free now. You know what I'm saying? Give us free. It's time to get it, you know?
You know, and that's. A lot of people are, you know, a lot of people are, you know, it's like intimidated by the idea of getting business started. They think, oh, it's just so much to do. Right. I don't have the money. I don't have to help. I don't have a team.
Yeah.
You know, but you got division.
Exactly. Blessed with the vision.
You've been blessed with a vision, but just don't know where to start. So, you know, that's one of your expertise, Mr. Kadima.
Is it?
You know, no, I'm just.
I'm just a vessel.
Share some of your insight. You know, you are an accountant, so I know you help a lot of people out with business and getting things off the ground.
Well, for me, it's enjoying to learn the stories, to be part of a journey.
Yeah.
Such as one of our guests today, right?
Yes.
You know, to be. To love how people are able to take whatever's been gifted to them and create it into something phenomenal, amazing, remarkable, memorable.
Absolutely.
That's really what it's all about.
Absolutely. Absolutely. That's what it's all about. And like he said, we have some amazing guests this evening who have took their passions and ideas and it's working.
And.
And I can bear witness to.
Is working.
We have our guests, Brandon and Joy Davis of Joy's Green Kitchen in the building. Y'.
All.
Scrumptious.
What's up, y'?
All?
I just got hungry all the time.
Y' all heard that? Joy's Green Kitchen. So, Joy, tell us a little bit about your journey and. And what got you started with Joy's Green Kitchen.
That's loaded. But Basically, I would start from health. You know, we both wanted to change our life. It was a bit to get him on board with like, you know, going vegan and whatnot. He's like, no, vegan.
Vegan meat.
You know. But once he did get on board, it made it easy, like one day. What, December 2017.
December 2016. Second, 2017.
Is the ex.
So as y' all see, they are a married couple. You know, they are in business together. They are a married couple. So, you know, she's talking about them both getting on board.
And yeah, it. For me, it had to be a team effort. Like, I know some people like jump lifestyle and not everyone in the household is on board. Right. Like, I just knew I wouldn't be successful that way. I'm like, no, can you please do it with me? Like, let's try it. We had like one of our really good friends, she's vegan.
Okay.
She's. She turned 60 and she's still, you know, she's healthy, fit. She's like, just amazing. So I was like, please try. Like, you know, I want to try this because, you know, I have some ailments. I was born with scoliosis, so I suffer from chronic back pain and you know, just things like that. And I was like, yo, I gotta do something to change my life. And like, those things made it harder to like, you lose weight and stuff. But when I went vegan, I lost almost £100. I lost £90 in the first year.
Oh, wow.
Yeah, we struggled with our pregnancy. We have a two year old now. So I credit that to, like, our lifestyle change because I feel like, you know, it would have just been a downward spiral otherwise if we hadn't taken the leap. So, you know, I credit that to a lot of things, a lot of positive things that have happened in our life, and I just would not change.
Wow. Tell us a little bit about where you from, Joy.
We're from Philly. We're from North Philadelphia.
Broad Street.
Yes.
That's what's up.
Yeah, we're from Philly, so I know that was hard.
You know, cheese steaks and all that. Being vegan amongst all of that, it's like, man.
But hold up, though.
That lifestyle is not like how we grew up.
That Joy's Green kitchen. Vegan Philly cheesesteak. Hold up though. It is awesome.
I appreciate. Yes, we're going well. It's a fan favorite.
So, yeah, like I said, I am a witness. I absolutely love your food.
Thank you.
For those who don't know, we have been working with Joy. We have a event called vegan parlay and Joy is our chef. And all is always preparing just delicious spreads. And when I say delicious, I mean delicious. You wouldn't even know you're eating vegan food. Like, yeah. Yes.
Just. Just pull up.
Just pull up.
It's always a good time. Don't worry about that. It's going to be good. And just pull up.
Cuz some people associate vegan food with boring, like tast lettuce on a plate. It's not just lettuce.
Flavors, layers, you know, we got condiments. We got all kinds of stuff. Seasoning too.
Exactly.
It's just depending on, you know, how much love you put into the food. But you can. You don't just eat raw chicken. Exactly. After you cook it, you. You don't just put no salt, no pepper. You're going to season it first. So just like you season vegan food, you're going to season that stuff.
Exactly, exactly. You know, it's all on how you prepare it. But you do a great job. You do. You're really, really good. You're really, really good. So what is one of the hardest things you face with being an entrepreneur, would you say?
Well, you were speaking to my soul when you first started. You were like, you know, not having a team, not having their resources and stuff. So that would be the biggest thing. Because, you know, we're from Philly, so it's like us, my family, my parents and stuff kind of moved down eventually. But like, just getting a team, getting people that have the hours to put into your dream, your vision, having them like get on board with your vision, you know, that's a huge part of it. And it is like, you know, the resources side of it. But it's like, it's even harder when people want you to meet a demand that's hard for you to meet. And you're like, man, they really want what I gotta give. And it's only one me. How can I give it to you?
That's a good problem.
But it's a struggle, though.
Yeah.
You know, like pressure.
Right.
You know, when you got to get people on board. So. But I make it work because I'm from Philly. We hustlers, you know, I just don't stop. I'm always like, you never sit still. I'm always going, because, you know, like with the scoliosis, that's like a thing is like you, you don't move it, you lose it. And I was like, I could be sitting home Getting disability. But that's not the life that I wanted to take. I said, no, I'm a creator. Like, I have to make things, I have to do things. You know, that's just the stamp I leave on the world.
And how did you recognize that? Right. That creativity, that talent within you? Right. Because you said you're a creator. You got to move. Like, how did you tap into that? Like, talk a little bit more about that? Like, what moved you and made you recognize that you had a gift and a talent, Something to offer the world.
Shortened version. When I was in third grade, my parents put me in a poetry program. So, like, that was like my. My way of visual expression. Because, like, I'm kind of. I guess I was, like, nerdy. I'm still a dork. So, like, that was like, me just, like, getting out there being social. So I created my first little poetry book, and I just started always writing and always, like, documenting things. And that went into graduating with an English writing degree.
Oh, wow.
Pitt, University of Pittsburgh. Yeah. With a theater miter. Because I'm dramatic. Yeah. So it's the art.
You are an artist.
Yeah, I make candles. So we had a candle business. We still do. We're coming out with a kitchen candle collection.
Look at you.
Lemon scents and stuff to go with the food. Yeah. Theme. What else? I was a photographer for 10 years. How did I forget that? After I graduated college, like, I. I shot weddings, newborns, really? Events, everything.
You've done it all.
Yes.
Yeah. Like, I just like to master whatever creative.
So how did you find that thing to put your energy into? That one thing to really go hard in? Because, you know, being an artist, some artists like myself are all over the place.
Oh, I am.
We're all over the place.
Very much so.
But how do you find that one thing to hone into? Like, just. Just say, this is what I'm going to focus on and just go hard in. What? How did you know it was food?
Because it was, like. It was something I needed to do to save my life. So it's like, I might as well put, like, everything into it. Like, my creative into it, put my writing side into it. Like, everything.
Everything.
I'm going to just pour in it and go hard because, like. Like, if I'm gonna do it, I gotta be, you know, committed to it. So.
Right.
That's just kind of how I am. It was like, the current thing, and it's not gonna be just a curry thing because, like, I'm always gonna, you know, be conscious of it now. And still working towards, you know, my goals health wise. So.
And you have a little one. You have a two year old born vegan. Look at that.
Congratulations.
Healthy and strong and smart and wild.
Yeah.
All the things. So.
And is that. Do you find that challenging, being a mommy, a new mommy, and. And running a business?
Is it bad if I say yes? Yes. No. It's real, so, yes.
But you got help. You got a partner, you know, which is awesome.
Yeah.
Daddy, Mommy, don't. Sometimes it's all about daddy, daddy, daddy, daddy. I'm like, I pushed you out there.
You'd be like, that's.
She's a daddy's girl. Like. But no, it's beautiful, though. So it is challenging. Like I said, it's great that my parents moved down here from Philly because, like, they're about 40 minutes away, but that's why I'm always everywhere. Like, it's like, all right, I gotta drop her off. So 40 minutes to Covington, 40 minutes back, then 30 minutes to the kitchen, and 30 minutes back, it's like, I'm always. But you got your support system manifesting this restaurant. So I could just go one place. Yes. And have her, like, join the office. No, she's about to start school by the time that comes, but, you know. Yeah, just planning things out. Just trying to let her see me, you know, cooking and stuff. Like, she sees my husband, she's like, oh, where's Daddy? I'm like, daddy's working. Oh, daddy computer. Yeah. And then so, like, she's like, well, mommy goes, my mommy's off cooking for the people or something. You know, she's like, oh, okay, okay. So, like, she knows Mommy cook. She knows Mommy's out, you know, working and stuff. She has the concept of it, so. Okay. I think she's proud of us.
Absolutely. Absolutely. She seems like a very joyful little girl. Very joyful. Her middle name is Joy.
Look at that.
Look at that.
We were extra, so. Yeah, it's cute.
I think it's so profound for me when you said that you did this to save your life.
Right.
You know, for me, almost feels like, you know, in life a lot of times we have opportunities to do a lot of different things. Right. When your back is against the wall, you feel like your life is on the line. You then truly find your purpose. Right. You know, I've learned that, you know, from just my experience and journey and things that I've studied and learned that you find your purpose in your deepest pain. Right. If you really look where you struggle the most where you have the, like, greatest, you know, let's say, you know, fallout or disappointments or just, you know, just whatever challenges, right? Or obstacles, right. Therein lies your purpose. So it was just so profound when you said that that you're now feel like you've tapped into something that brings a certain passion and, you know, and divinity out of you, but you did it to save your own life. So that is just so profound to me.
That's beautiful.
That's real. That's real.
I just spit it out. But the way you put it, it sounds so much better. I love it.
No, that's reality, you know, that's. You know, when we talk about entrepreneurship, that's what it is because you think about it, right? We all have been, you know, raised to go to school, go to college, get a job, right? Then a lot of times we all go through these processes, these steps. We get a degree, we graduate, and then we found ourselves miserable in these jobs. Then it's like, why do we get to that point, right? And it's like. And most people, if they're. You ask them a question. If you knew that you were going to die in two months, would you get up and go to that job every single day? If your life was on the line, would you get up and go to that same job every single day that you detest so much? Exactly. Right? Yeah, exactly. Right, Exactly. So for me, it's like, that's what entrepreneurship is all about, right? Being real to yourself and recognizing that if I don't have an opportunity tomorrow to live another day, would I be doing this today? And use like. Exactly. You said you will be doing it. Same thing that you're doing. If you knew today or next week or next month was your last day, Right? That's what entrepreneur. Exactly, right.
It's also of service. Like, I like to create things for people.
There you go.
Like the photography. I'm gonna take a photo of you. It's on your wall.
Exactly.
I'm gonna write something for you. Like, you know, I like to give little gifts to people.
Food.
Here you go.
And it's knowing your why, right?
Yeah.
It's like knowing what are you, what you're doing it for, what is the purpose in it. And you seem like, you know that you know your why, right?
It took a while. It wasn't easy.
Of course.
They asked me who. What I do and what I do it for to my baby, my family, longevity. I want to be here, like, you know, for a long time and a good time. So.
Exactly A long time and a good time.
Right, exactly.
And building that work ethic. Right? Because, you know, if. If you don't do it, it ain't gonna get done because it's right. And if you don't do it, nothing gets done. No, nothing. Nothing is building. Nothing is progressing. So, you know, and. And you know, sometimes that you gotta. You gotta build that something. Everybody don't just have. Have that, you know, you know, it's just like, you got to work at it. You got to work at it. Now, some people. Some people do. Some people get up, you know, every day, like, all right, I gotta go. I gotta do this.
Yeah.
Every. Everybody depending on me. If I don't do it, they don't eat right.
I mean, some people are full of ideas, but I feel like you just. Sometimes you just gotta be like, yellow, take a chance and execute it. Like. Or like, you're working, you're nine to five, but when you come home, you're. You're practicing that craft. And that's what I do still. Like, after they go to be attended, he takes her up and I'm down on the computer responding to emails, making menus, like, you know, watching the cooking show while I do that. It's just like, so like, just involving myself in this little creative bubble because that's just my time, you know, to. To crank things out. So just. You got to find the time. You got to find your. Why, like you said, find what's motivating you.
Absolutely, absolutely.
And unfortunately, most people don't even really tap into that until, like, they feel like their life is on a line.
Right.
That's really what's profound to me. Right. It's like, your life has to be on the line because this is like, this is about your destiny. This is about your livelihood. This is about your well being, your peace of mind. Right? So to tap into that and recognize that, I think is the most critical aspect of this. Of this journey, this entrepreneurial journey. Creative journey.
Yeah, I would say. And sometimes it might feel like it's a little too late, but it's not.
It's never too late. I mean, Morgan Freeman did it. He was like 100, right? And still got. You know what I'm saying?
That's real, though. It's never too late.
Joe Clock was like a hundred, but he was still out there whooping them kids in school, man.
Like, it's never too late. Like, I even feel like I'm 35, and I think that to myself, I'm like, girl, you too old to Be. But I'm like, no, I feel young. I don't feel 35.
You know, 35 is not old, girl.
I feel jovial, just like. Just like, I still get excited about life, and I wasn't always like that, but, like, it's a beautiful thing to be like that now. And now I just want to just, like, consume everything that I probably missed out on, being depressed or stressed or.
You know what they say, you become Vegan, you lose 20 years.
Right?
Oh, okay. Well, my mama got good skin, too.
That's what they say.
So I'm extra good then.
Cool. Yeah, yeah, that's. I mean, that's a. That's a lifestyle upgrade.
Yeah, for sure.
It's like an upgrade.
It feels good.
It feels great.
Yeah.
So. So, Brandon, tell us a little bit more about your experience as far as supporting Joy and being there with her as she's, you know, quit her job. Right? Like, quitting her job. Like, babe, I'm gonna quit this job. I'm gonna go be a, you know, a chef extraordinaire. Like, how was that for you? How was that experience for you?
It was. It was dope for the fact that I saw her attack all these things, like candles, writing. Like, I've been. We've been together for 16 years.
Oh, wow.
So we've grown together.
Black love.
Yeah, we've grown together. So I've seen her when she was in college, going through her poetry when she was published in college and things like that. I missed a few things because we were doing long distance at the time, but, you know, I've been along with the ride the whole time. And when it came time for her to kind of jump into it, I was the one that pushed her because I was still working. Unfortunately, I'm still working, so I'm on a plantation, but I'm going to go into something.
You got a plan? You're drawing in the sand every day. Yeah.
The thing is, though, what you just talked about, about being at that point, that's where I'm at now, though. Okay. Because we've already talked about just kind of jumping into the entrepreneurship together and just doing it right now. Like, me working, it allows her to focus on what she's doing.
Okay.
Because I pour into the job and I get that money that pays for our lifestyle. Enjoy that and the things we like to do. But she gets to work and she gets to create what she wants to create. And like she said, it was a little bit of a struggle switching me to vegan, but it wasn't that much of a struggle. She tried to play me a little bit. It wasn't that much of a struggle.
Like a year.
Oh, wow.
It took a year. Oh, is that what really happened?
I could have chicken, made me turkey. All right, maybe some fish. But no.
You talking about cheese steaks. No more cheese steaks.
One day I went to the store, got all this vegan stuff, and I was like, look, I'm doing this whether you want to or not. He was like, oh, she's serious. She's like, all right, I join you. And that night, like literally that night, I bought all that stuff. We threw out all the other stuff and it was like cold turkey.
It was cold turkey. But. But the thing, I will say this though. I fought her, but it was honestly the best change we could have made for our life. If it wasn't for that, then we probably wouldn't be where we are now. Like, as far as a mindset.
Yes.
And just in general because it really makes you approach things differently. Like you, it you tap into your creativity.
Yeah.
Because meals that you used to make, you need to find new ways to make them, right?
Exactly.
Like, she even says, I'm a good cook.
I know that he don't give himself no credit, but he. You inspire him here and there.
But yeah. So it was dope being along for the ride. And we were actually. Do you mind? I don't know if you mind if I shared this, but we were going.
To.
When we first started veganism, we were actually in a dark place mentally. We were like, if you don't mind. When we came down to Atlanta, it was kind of on a whim.
Okay.
We born and raised affiliate, spent all of our lives there. But I kept telling her, you know, something's calling me to Georgia. I had a homie down here, a couple homies from school, and they were like, oh, it's great. Cost of living. You know, rent's cheap.
And I'm like, okay, cool.
So at the time we were working for Apple. Okay. We were both full time. Well, I was full time, she was part time. She's doing her photography.
Yes.
So I took a part time job down here just on the whim. Okay. With Apple, since it was one here. I came down part time. We came down, we had some savings, we did some Uber. But then we started hitting rough spots, Right?
Yes.
You know, we didn't have any family. We're by ourselves and, you know, money was running low. That's when we started Davis Candle Company. That helped us boost it up. But even Then we were still kind of mentally just kind of down because we kept feeling defeated. Everything we put into it wasn't coming out. We weren't making the amount of money we thought we would make at the time.
Exactly.
And we were just in a rut. We went vegan. And that kind of just opened up some pathways for. She started Joyce Green Kitchen, which originally just started as a blog. Okay.
The green was because I. I like green. I was like, oh, let me make a blog. You know, I'm doing a green kitchen. And then it just. Once we turned vegan, I was like, oh, it goes with. It manifested this, like, perfectly.
And it worked out wonderfully because she was posting everything she was trying to make vegan. People started loving it to the point where they're like, where can we get this food? And we're like, well, damn, where can you get it?
Exactly.
We're like, this is just us, you know, cooking at home. And then one day, we got approached to be a vendor at an event. And at that time, Joy made nachos. Vegan nachos. Everyone loves those things. She makes her own cheese sauce and all that sour cream, all that from scratch. And we did this event, and she was nervous. Like, she had chili and cornbread along with it. But we left the cornbread at home.
Right on the stove.
I was like, you want me to go get it? She turned and looked at me. She said, please don't leave.
Right.
Like, tears are bubbling up, like, if you leave.
Yes.
People were, like, already, like, coming.
They didn't even miss that cornbread, did they? They ain't even missed it. I know they did.
They didn't care. But I was like, oh, the cornbread's not here. It's all.
And your cornbread is fire, though. Oh, my God.
When I tell you there was a line there while we were setting up, we sold out.
Wow.
We sold out. And that's when we really realized we tapped into something.
Wow.
Yes.
Right?
And it was fantastic. You know, and ever since then, we just kept getting calls for more events, being vendors, and, you know, we just been blessed to kind of build it up where it's at.
Wow, that's awesome.
Fantastic. Come along for that ride.
That's a blessing out here with a dollar and a drink. Yeah, absolutely.
Absolutely.
But that support from you was everything for her.
Yeah.
Yeah, that was everything.
Yeah. I. I wanted her to tap into it because I knew she had potential. Like, I've seen the potential in everything she's ever done. Literally, everything she touches has turned to Gold. And I love.
That's a statement though, because what you need is people around that believes in you. Yeah. Because it starts there, Right. And people that have patience.
Right.
Because you had patience. You didn't believe in her efforts. You didn't believe or you wasn't. You didn't have the faith to just jump right away, right?
Well, I did, actually.
Well, well, okay.
Okay, let's clarify it.
Sometimes, like there was a time because, you know, I just listed all those creative things that I do. Right? He'd be like, now you painting? Yeah, now you, now you. Now you're doing this. Like, what's up with all this stuff?
Can you paint anything? Hold on now. Anytime she has come to me with an idea, I hear out. Yeah. And the way her, all her businesses have started, all her ventures is I buy the domain for the Internet, for the website. Davis Candle Company bought the domain. Joyce Cream Kitchen bought the domain. She even had a blog about all the things she creates. One point. Joy creates.
Yeah.
Bought the domain because I was like, all right, let's do it for real.
Let's get the domain exactly.
Like this is, is real. So it's cute that he always does that for me. So he does support my little random things that I do.
But sometimes, sometimes it depends on like how outlandish it is.
No, no, you're supportive.
No, that's good though. That's very important. We, we, we need the support artists. We constantly change our mind. You know, we get bored. We get bored. On to the next.
But it's all about transmuting that energy. Right. You know, ultimately, you know, as. Especially when you talk about, you know, vegan and how you were in a dark place. Right. That's. I share a lot of that for me with people in my journey of becoming vegan. Right. There was a lot of things that I was struggling with personally from a health perspective, mental perspective, Mental health perspective. But something happened when I transitioned to a plant based lifestyle. Like, it's like the sense of clarity, a sense of peace, a sense of, you know, connectivity to the whole just, you know, was birthed in me. And I just never really grasped it until I'm looking back at it. Like there was it, it was a time of my life where I needed something different, something to kind of, you know, transmute my energy. That negative place that I was in and becoming vegan was that for me. And it sounds like it was the same thing for you all as well, because you talked about how you guys were in a dark place, but then it's like when you made that decision, a shift happened, right? Like a paradigm shift happened and where your energy was transmuted and you would then were able to take that energy and create what you're creating.
That's very true. Yeah. Because like, I don't know if I said it took us like eight years to have our daughter. Like, yes, a lot of trying. And we had some.
It was fun though, right?
I mean, we got a lot of practice.
Practice. That was trying though, I'm saying.
I mean, maybe a little more than practice.
Okay.
It was fun.
Okay.
All right. But that's.
Right, but the results were. But the results weren't what you guys were looking for, right?
Yeah, like, we had a loss. We had like some things happen, which is why we were in such a dark place.
Like, like why. Exactly.
Right? Like I, I was in a depression. Like, sleep, sleeping on the couch, like, just crying all the time, like wrapped in a blanket. Like, I just couldn't stop, like. But going vegan, it's going to get you up and make you create some things. Make you like, like think about what I'm about to put in my body. Drink your water, people, all those things. So, you know, like, it just, it just motivated me in a different way that was like, girl, like, yes. Things like, have happened to you in a way you didn't expect. But like, don't let your life be on this couch. You got to get up and it's.
Like you feel better. There's this, like I said, this energy shift. It's like you feel better. You're. You're alert, you're awake.
Yeah, right.
It's like you're more, like more life is being poured into you on a day to day basis.
Right.
So you then are able to tap into your creativity and focus. And like you said, you have this, you know, no more itis, right? You know, you don't. You eat, you're not passed out on the couch because you know, you know, your body's too busy trying to break down all that, you know, everything that you've consumed.
Exactly, exactly.
Why you eat that. You feel dead. Right?
Look at that.
And it's, it's so profound, Right? Even when I began learning, you know, like what meat does to us. Right?
Talk about it.
Yeah, right. Even when I began learning about what halal or kosher meets, like, literally, like they're aware that animals know they're about to be butchered or tortured, right? So they have that fear, those fear homies. So they know that these hormones, these animals recognize this and there are overwhelmed, right? And then they release these fear hormones are going to their bodies. That when they're slaughtered, that's there, that energy is there. Then we turn around and consume it, right? And we wonder why we're anxious, wonder why we're depressed, why we're feeling this anger, this hates, uneasiness, right?
Fear.
It's like that fear based energies, right? Because you know, it's all about energy. So you're eating these things and you're taking on their energy. So when I learned that kosher halal meant that they had to distract the animals, making them feel like, oh, you're about to go get a massage. We're taking you to the, to the cow spa, right? We take to the proud spot. Massage you, you know what I'm saying? Make it feel good. Bring you some ice cream. And I'm saying that we made from your milk.
You're willing to be sacrificed now you like? Yeah, go ahead.
And then bow. They just shoot them in the head right in the midst of the distraction. No, exactly. I have friends that are butchers and that's what they do. They blindside the animals and kill them unexpectedly so the animal doesn't recognize that they're about to get slaughtered.
That is very profound.
If we have to do all of that to kill an animal just to consume it, maybe, maybe we should. Maybe we should begin to kind of.
Rethink our, you know, and also like with chicken, you know, what's that documentary we watched? But it was like the super good size. We got to do a chicken documentary. But like, they really changed the. What Nature's algorithm of how it's. How long it takes to produce like chicken. Like, they were like, oh, we used to be able to do it in 12 weeks and now we're down to five and a half weeks. And I was like, ew. And the chickens are walking around like this.
Hormones.
And then you're eating that. Those are hormones that are meant for human consumption. And they're pumping up these chickens with it.
And it's just walk around like Foghorn Leghorn, huh? I say, I say, I say.
And y' all wonder why the wings are jumbo.
Jumbo wings, right?
Because I heard about the shortage of chicken wings. But wait, it was just chicken wing shortage.
Does Rick Ross know about this? It was like, my bad, Ros.
It wasn't a chicken thigh shortage. It wasn't a chicken shortage. Just the wings.
So, like, I don't understand what happens with the rest of the bird.
Wow. Chicken wing shortage.
Like they're doing a lot out here so we can keep consuming this death.
It started getting me when I tell people this story all the time. I drove by McDonald's years ago, and it said, nuggets now with real chicken.
Oh, yeah.
Now literally, the marquee said, nuggets now with real chicken. When the whole controversy came out with that. Remember that pink paste stuff that came out? Actually, no. There was some. It was a paste. It was like a paste that they were squeezing out, shaping them like nuggets and just breading him and put breading around. It was like a pink goo. So they would grind. They would grind up all these chicken bones and all this stuff into this pink goo. And then they would just decorate it, you know, like a ginger. They'll decorate like a gingerbread on Christmas.
It's like hot dogs and then fry it.
Right? But they were saying. So that came out, like, this was like, 10 years ago it came out. And I remember driving my. When they came out, it was all going on. The Marquis said, nuggets now with real chicken. And the line was booming. I had a new chicken from McDonald's. I'm like, yo, for real, like, you want me to trust you now? Now you're telling us. But people were still. I'm like, that's how, like, the most important facet of perpetuating life.
Eating right.
We completely subjugate to somebody else.
Yeah. And that's why, like, another cool thing about, like, the way we eat now is we make so many things from scratch. And, yeah, I didn't grow up that way. And I, like, you know, we had. We called them oozing ooze in Philly. But then when I went to college, it became ramen noodles. I was like, okay.
But, yeah, we all grew up on that.
It was oodles and noodles. But, yeah, stuff like that was when it was cut up. The hot dogs are just random stuff.
We put everything in the moodies and noodles.
Yeah. We stake them. Yeah. My baby will sit there and eat some avocado and munch on some raspberries and stuff. And I was, you know, wow, we.
Come a long way.
I did not know that this could be a life, like, but it's beautiful. And, you know, they say every generation, you just move it forward. And that's what I want to leave for her. Like, yes. You see my. Me and daddy trying to change their lifestyle. And you see them, you know, giving you the berries over the chips, you know, so.
Exactly.
She might be a little annoying now, but she. She Gets both sometimes, but, you know.
Because they only know what you give them. Yeah, you don't give them that trash. They don't know about the trash.
The snack cabinet. Mommy, can I get a bowl? It's like a little almond bar, you know, so it's. It is what. What you. What you have available. They can't go shop. They don't have a job. They don't have a car. What you bring to them is what.
They'Re going to eat.
Yeah, sorry. Now I'm getting passionate.
That's real, though. You know, it's. It's. It's a difference in our household, like, compared to other children, we see, like, our daughter, like, she said, will ask for berries in the morning. I make smoothies in the morning. She says, daddy smoothie.
And I mean, look at that. You know, we can do it, y'. All. Like, we are the first teacher.
And it can be tough. Like, no cap, as they say. But no, it can be hard because, like, if she's riding around, like, and as she gets older, you know, they bring a cake to the class or something, you know, but I'm gonna be extra. She always gonna have me make a cake.
There you go.
But, like, there's ways to get around it. Like, it might seem difficult at times, but, like, once it becomes your life, it's routine, and you just do it. Takes 21 days to make a habit.
You just make it up, and you.
Just move about your life.
And on that. No. On that, no. Create new habits. Right.
We're about to go get some vegan water.
We're gonna take a. And we'll be right back with some more healthy topics in business.

This is Tony Hightower, and you are listening to Power 108.9.
Hey.
Hey.
And we back with some more conscious intercourse with our guest, Brandon and Joy Davis of Joy's Green Kitchen. Yeah, we just had some, you know, nice, hot conversation, you know, and the. And. And the journey of business startup and how important it is to have that support system around you.
Right.
You know, it's. It's a real thing. It's a real thing. But we got to. We gotta build teams. We gotta keep supportive people around us. We got to spread love.
Yes.
You know, we gotta spread this knowledge, you know, inspire people. Inspire people to do. To do this. Let them know you can do it, too. You know, don't be intimidated by starting. Just start. Just start somewhere. You just take that first step.
Can I add something?
Absolutely.
We are in the age of YouTube, university, social media. So many things, so many resources. There's something that. That. That's probably why the way I am, how I am, because, like, I want to learn woodworking. Like, there's just random things that. I've been talking about this for years.
I told you, it depends on how outlandish it is.
No, but that's gonna be a hobby. I just want to learn, like, how to make, like, bookshelves. I like home decor. So. Okay, but that's just a random thing. But. But I'm. I watch videos on YouTube and, like, oh, this is the kind of drill you use. And this is something. One day I'm gonna try it.
Yeah.
Safely. But one day I'm gonna try. So it's like whatever you want to learn. Like, you can study it. You can learn it. You can. You can. There you have access, no matter how poor you are. Like, you. There's government free phones. Download YouTube. Learn what you need to learn. Like, it's like. Like you're going to college. You know, you come home before you go to bed, you scroll in your phone anyway, take a couple seconds and watch something that. That is going to, you know, put you on the path to the craft that you want to.
There you go.
Take part in.
You used to have to go to a university or some kind of college or university to learn these things.
Google it.
Yeah, everything's on YouTube.
You have to get signed to be a music artist now. You can just put it on the phone and, yeah, self publish or trying to find. Sign, sign yourself.
No excuses.
That's the. That's the moral of the story.
More of the story is because I.
Can still be full of excuses. I'm just saying. I'm telling myself this too, but, like, you know, like, there's always a way to, like, figure out what you want to do. I feel like.
Yeah, I mean, there's none to it, but to do it right, you just got to get out there and actually just get it done.
Right.
A lot of people come to me and say, oh, I need to set up an llc. I need to get, you know, this copywritten. I need a patent. I'm like, like, just go make money. Like, you got an idea, Just go sell it. Like, go make money. Go out there. Whatever it is that you have, it's a product. If it's a service, go out there and just do it. And then. And then once you make the money to be able to pay for an LLC or to pay for, you know, a trademark, then come back and let's talk. But go actually sell this product. Like, we try to overthink it, right?
It's just build your brand, get your name out there.
Yeah, just go do it. Get out and peep good in the community, like you said, Joy, there's, you know, YouTube, there is community centers. There's all kinds of resources, you know? Yeah, go with that. Well, libraries.
I know, because everything's on his phone.
Right. You know, books. Books are fun, right? I like books.
No, but. But even go back to, you know, there's a saying from years ago that said that, you know, if you want to hide something from a black person.
Put in a book.
We don't read. Right. And you don't need to say, because I'm not. I'm not a reader. I've. I've never read a whole book. Ever. Yeah, ever. I've graduated from college and never read a whole book. But I. But I listen to books. That's the difference. Right? That's what I'm saying. So for me, sitting down, actually, you know, going word for word, page by page is just. Not for me. I'm an all. I learned that. I'm an audible learner. That's why, for me, I was able to graduate through school by simply, you know, memorizing the lecture. You Know, and then I would take that information and, you know, a lot.
Of people are like that.
But.
But you have to recognize that about yourself.
Exactly.
Yeah.
Yes. Right.
You have to recognize that about yourself. Because I think I'm an audible.
Exactly. Because for me, I remember I used to be a runner and I could tell you when I heard a certain. When I, like, share, you know, perspectives that I listen. In the book, I'll tell you exactly what block I was on where I was running. Because it's like there's this connection between mind. Mind and spirit. When you are, you know, consuming information, you are. You become this, like. Because this. We are. We essentially are able to retain everything we are. We are computers ourselves.
Right.
They actually. They mimic the human brain.
Yeah, Right.
Creepy.
Saying that everything that the chips, the computer, everything is mimicking how the human brain functions.
Yeah.
So that's who we. That's how powerful we are.
We just don't know it.
So we have to just tap into it. Exactly. Right.
So.
And that's really what entrepreneurship is all about. People tap it into that creative, you know, aspect of themselves and. And overcoming those fear, those doubts, those, you know, those anxieties that keep us from. Be able to push forward.
Absolutely. And sometimes we go down rabbit hole. Sometimes we get lost and stuck in bad habits and don't realize. Sometimes it takes people or circumstances to. To wake us up and for us to realize that.
Yes.
Like, you've been going down this road for a long time and it could be due to trauma. It could be trauma response or, you know, but you. It's like I've been in this funk for so long, and it took this for me to really see it.
Yeah.
You know, sometimes people don't like to have people. You know. You know how you have a bunch of, like, they say yes. Men around you.
Yeah.
Or people that just go with whatever you say. But you don't have people who hold you accountable, you know, and let you see your faults.
Yeah.
You know, sometimes we need people like that around, you know, to give us that extra push. You know what I mean? It's very, very important.
Partners.
And you don't know. And it's like you don't know what you don't know.
Yeah.
Right.
So true. And you don't know everything.
And you don't know everything. You do, but sometimes it takes somebody coming and putting that mirror in front of of you. Like, look, look, look, sis.
Yeah.
Look at yourself.
Yeah.
You know, look what you're doing. No, stop.
That's why water works. That's why. That's why we changed our life the way we did. Because also, looking at family members, like, on my mom's side of the family, a lot of the women don't live past, like, 60, 65.
We have tissues.
Just trying to break a cycle.
And that's very important.
A little girl, too. Like, it's just so scary.
So I'm just trying to, like, break generational curses.
This has allowed us to make a change for the better, right?
Yeah.
Inspire the next generation to do better.
Exactly.
And. And that's one of the things that we really enjoy about Joyce Green Kitchen is we get to teach people a lot of our customers are not vegan.
Yeah.
We get to teach them that you can eat vegan and still have exciting meals. Like, this woman makes a vegan rib.
It is so good.
The craziest part right there.
Craziest part being when we were non vegan, never had a rib before. I don't know how the heck she did it.
We got meat eaters.
How about. This is the best rib I ever had.
Yeah.
We don't know nothing about ribs.
It's crazy.
No, it's really good. It's really good.
And, like, with the cheesesteak, like, the bread is made locally. I make the seitan meat myself, the cheese sauce myself. So, like, it's like we know where every ingredient came from. From, you know, in something like, you.
Cannot say, man, you don't know what you're eating.
Right.
It's so, so powerful and so profound. Right. How much? Just.
Yeah, it's okay.
It's all good.
That's passion.
Yeah. I love that. Right.
We.
We as a people have come a long ways, and we have to take. We have to take ownership of what has been given unto us. Right. We are all creative beings. Right. One of the things that I've learned the most is that when we look at ourselves as. As children of God. Right. I'm not sure, you know, what your religious beliefs are or from a spirituality perspective, but whether or not you consider yourself a child of God or children of God, Right. Or, you know, universe. Universal beings that were, you know, generated and created by the universe. The great greatest talent, greatest gift that we have is the ability to create. Right? So we come from a creative source that created us in this. In this likeness. So therefore, the greatest gift that was empowered to us is to create. Right? So we begin to learn how to create. That. That. That is a sole purpose. Our sole purpose is to create. Right?
That's right.
I was just looking at something, you know, before we got on. It's. I think it says something about how life is not about something, but it.
Was about creating yourself. Life is not about finding yourself.
Yeah, it' creating yourself, right? Yeah, I think, I think, I think our producer put that, Michael posted that, right?
Yeah.
So it's about creating yourself, right?
Absolutely.
Learning how to create yourself and, and, and not. And overcoming that, that fear. Because a lot of times what, what stable. I mean, this empowers us or immobilizes us is the fear. It is, right? Because everything that we've been taught from the time we were children is fear based on. From the fear based religions to the fear based educational system, fear based medical systems.
Right?
Those are all fear based systems practices.
Absolutely.
To keep us oppressed and grounded in fear. So therefore we can never take the leap forward. Right? When I was a Christian going to church every single day. I remember one of my.
Every day.
Yeah. Yo, we was at one point in time, we was in church. Church every day. Monday church, Tuesday church, like Wednesday church, like, yo, the church was like every day. It was like, yo, I was like, yo, like church again. But.
It was.
On them, right?
But I remember certain things used to stand out to me. So for example, the parables of the table talents, right? This is one of the greatest to me teachings in the Bible talked about how there was a wealthy man who had like three people that served three servants, right? So he was about to leave out on a journey. So he left them all with talents. You know, the Bible calls them talents, right? One he left with like three talents, the other one with two talents and one with one talent, right? So he left and said, hey, my good servants, you know, I'm going on this journey. I'll be back, back. So the person he left with the three talent, the servants he left the three talents, went and like, you know, try to hustle the talents and flip them and, you know, made six talents, right?
He.
He flipped them and multiplied and made six talents. The person that got the two talents, when it took the talents and just dug a hole and just hid them, right? And then the other person that had got the one talent, he went and try to, you know, do something as well, trying to flip and create something. But he lost everything. Everything, right? So when the master came back, they all had to report back to him, right? The one that was, that got the, you know, the six talents. I turned the three talents into six talents, presented him with the six talents and he was like, wow, you amazing servants, you know, so he Put him up in this luscious mansion with, you know, his own service, and kind of put him up right Then the one that lost everything, it was like, oh, wow. Well, at least you had the courage to go try something, right? So I'm gonna put you up too. You go, got a mansion over that hill. You got your own servants. Because at least you demonstrated courage to be able to try to make something out of what I gave you. And the other person's like, oh, master, look, I. You know, I still got the same two talents you gave me. Master Shundum was like, you evil and wicked servant, and banished them.
Dang, all that.
That's in the Bible. He banished this person and called his talents, called him wicked and evil.
Wow. This is.
Listen to your people, open your Bibles and find that parables are the talents. It's there. I'm just saying. But it's. But it's like we don't learn.
But we.
But we don't learn these things, right? So we are all given talents, right. We are talented with something. You've discovered yours with, you know, being a chef and all the other things that you've. You've tried and discovered some. You've lost. You've had losses in. You went out there and try to do something that you might have had a loss, you might have have fallen short, you might have failed. Right. At least you tried. Right. There's so many people out there that are not trying, that are simply wicked and evil, because we all have been given some type of talent. All of them have them. We all have something. Every human being on the planet has something. So there's no.
You have the most random businesses.
Yeah. You be like.
You do.
Exactly. People. Yeah.
I'm like, all right, cool. Love it. There's always something to be created.
Exactly. So I think recognizing that and just giving. Just trying. Going out there and just putting your foot forward, regardless of failure, whatever, right? Overcoming those fear, that anxiety. That is because we've been. Unfortunately, we've been conditioned that way. I think it's by design, but we have to recognize that when we talk about breaking generational curses, I think for me, it's all about recognizing what is our pitfalls, what have been put there within our being that prevents us from taking these steps forward.
Yeah, that's.
That's real right there.
Like overcoming them fears.
It's gonna be scary.
We get in our own way sometimes.
But it will be good.
That's real.
Yeah, but it's a risk, right?
Yeah, but, like, why not get Excited for both.
You know, like, there you go.
You get on roller coasters to be feared to. For fun. Right. People want to jump out of planes and do all this stuff. You. You do that for fun. You will pay somebody to terrify you. Literally. You pay somebody waiting two hour lines to get terrified to death.
Try something scary that can have a great reward.
There you go.
Exactly right.
Leap of faith.
And when you take that leap of faith offers a type of fulfillment for you.
Yeah.
Right. Like you f. You feel like you achieve something.
Yeah.
Something from nothing.
Absolutely.
I think that's a fantastic thing.
That's a great feeling.
Yeah.
And that's one of the things I admire about joy, you know, I got a chance to see that. I'm just saying, you know, it inspires me. You know, I want to. I want to do my own thing and most definitely jump out there.
Yeah. That is having somebody to speak of you that way and to believe in you. That is everything, you know, and knowing that they believe in you and support you, you know, even when you down. Even when you know, you. You have those moments when you're not at your best, having somebody push you through it, you know, and I always. You doing it, you know, just encourage.
I can pretty much come to him with any emotion. He will have a response.
But.
Yeah, but like, it's just like, it's. It's usually like right on time with what I need to hear. I don't want to hear it. Sometimes it's like, okay, like. And if I'm like, freaking out, I'm nervous. Oh, how is this? This? She's like, girl, you made that a thousand times. Why you asking me?
Come. Come on.
But sometimes I need to hear that. Yes. I have made this a thousand times. So I need to calm down and trust myself, make it and then move on. So, like, he just tells me what I need.
On the bright side, I get a sample. So you know.
Yeah. Taste test.
But he's not telling you what you need to hear. He's telling you the truth.
Yeah.
He ain't telling you what you just wanted.
He don't sugarcoat anything.
He's telling you the truth.
Right.
That's not me. I'm not the type to like, be a yes man.
You're right.
Like, nah, J, that a. That's too salty. Over again.
Yeah, right.
That's me. That's who I am.
That's what's up. You need that. You need them people in your corner.
Someone to light that fire. Right?
Yeah.
You know, to. To inspire you. And encourage you.
And we're dreamers. Like we like ever since we even first met, we're like, oh, we going to have a coffee shop. We going to have this. Like we talked about having a coffee shop for years. So one day we will have this be.
It's crazy. It's. It's so much in the pipeline. Like this is really just to be.
And you going to do it.
Big dreams. And it's like the dreams kept us like just excited about things. Like even if it's like nowhere near, like it just seems so far away or something. Like just, just talking about it, plan it out. All right, so we going to have these kind of tables. What kind of walls you want? Like we could get some kind of these. Like we don't have this, this. Cuz you creating that visual, it's like I could walk in and see what it going to look like right now, today.
Absolutely.
And one day we will walk in and it's going to be.
And that's the power of the mind. When you see it, you picture it. That's how you manifest it.
Exactly. I mean some of the greatest philosophers, especially business wise, have talked about how imagination is perhaps the most important facet into entrepreneurship.
Yes.
I have a huge.
And it's crazy. Yes.
No, go ahead. Yes.
It's crazy because what you were talking about, about school and all that, that kind of stuff. Like, like being taught to go through that system and just get a job.
Exactly.
Is killing imagination.
Exactly. No.
And like it doesn't allow children to dream. Yes. You know, that's what I was taught. I went to school, go to college, get a job on a nice salary.
Yeah.
I have a job at a nice salary. I freaking hate it.
Exactly.
Right.
It's like, come on. Like.
Yeah.
There's not one path and that's something we want to teach our daughter, our children and all. Children. Children. Correct. There's options out there for you. If you have a passion, put. Pour yourself into it. You never know what could come of it.
Yeah. And again, it's never too late. If you like to crochet, go in and make those little whatever those things are that they crochet and sell that. Hustle it. Sell it. Yeah. To your family and friends. Even if you don't turn it into like a solid business or something that you're making, you're sharing and you're getting fulfillment and sharing your creation. You know, like.
Yeah.
To me that's the coolest part. Start.
No, it is. And we. It's just starting. It's just doing it. And the right people will show up, right. When you are creative, when you're, you know, tapping into your, you know, your higher self, your consciousness, right? Those you're going to start grab. You become a magnet. When we talk about, you know, manifesting, right. Or the law of attraction, I mean, those things are real, right? So real, you know, you magnetize. You know, we are electromagnetic, right? So we are magnets. So we attract, like, right? So it's changing your surroundings, right? Because people talk about, oh, you know, it's so hard to start a business this, that, and the other. But if you're around people that are all on the job doing the same things, talking about how miserable they are, you may want to reconsider your, you know, your flock, right? You know, just. Just reconsider it. Put yourself around people that are doing those things that you want to do, do, but people already have done it. So then they. They can then advise you and give you advice or you hear them talking or having conversations, you could then learn from them, right? So also learning about our surroundings. Because those things will simply come to you once you begin to change yourself, Right?
Right. That's the law of attraction, right? And it first starts with your thoughts. Your thoughts are very, very powerful.
Thoughts create things, right?
That's so true. True. And I've slowly started. Well, slow. But now I think I got the hang of it. Like, I was just a very negative thinker, you know, like, yeah, oh, my God, what if doesn't go right? What if I drop this? This happens. What if this don't taste right and stuff? And now I need to just be like, breathe, girl.
Yeah, you got this.
You got this. And like, I just used to just always just. Just. Just, you know, think just negatively. But now it's like, I wake up in the morning, I, you know, I go to my kitchen. My kitchen is a big window. So I look out the window, I'm like, it's gonna be a great day.
Speak those affirmations.
I do feel silly, but I'm like, no. I look out and I look at this guy. It's gonna be a great day. Everything's gonna taste great. Everything's blessed. Like, like, you know, nothing's going real wrong. And in honor of my favorite rapper, Dear Silas. I ain't stressing today, so, you know, you just gotta, like, put that in yourself and, like, yeah, yeah, Ebony know the vibe of him. I don't know him personally, but, like, y' all go listen to Dear Silence. He's like, he Must be from. He's from Mississippi. And he, he is so talented. And like, I love listening to him. When I was listening to him cruising here, cuz I was a little nervous when I was like, all right, right.
He got the dance that go to it. It's very tr.
Oh, wow.
He's great. But yeah, aside from that. I forgot what I was talking about.
He must be from donation.
He's from Mississippi.
Yeah.
And he, he is so talented. And like, I love listening to him when I was listening to him cruising here because I was a little nervous when I was like, right.
He got the dance that goes to. It's very true.
Oh, wow.
I love it.
He's great. But yeah, aside from that, I forgot what I was talking about.
Yeah, I saw good.
I talked about dear silence when I was.
But that's like you said, I ain't stressing today.
Yes.
You know, so don't stress. Think good thoughts. Give yourself daily affirmations that you can do it, you will do it.
Yes.
Yeah.
Right. Even when you pray and you. And you meditate, don't, don't, don't speak like, oh, I want this. I'm going to get this. I'm going to put some base in your voice. Put some things there. You right. That's how you gotta speak to the universe.
Say it with your chest. Say with your chest.
It's gonna be mine. That restaurant, you want to get that coffee shop, you gonna get that.
There you go. People do it. Make it happen.
