can you live without social media?

You can live without social media, and often should. Cal Newport's Deep Work shows how social media fragments attention and feeds FOMO, while an artist who practices uninterrupted creation produces better work than one constantly posting online. Quit it unless it directly serves your actual goals.

Now, can you live without social media? Like, the answer is yes and no. Now I'm gonna explain. The thing is with social media, which I have learned in a book called Deep Work, which is a great book— like, you need to get this book right now, you're gonna get some, like, some knowledge that you really need in your life. Like, I'm gonna be honest. Now look, what he said in social media is not social media, but Deep Work is He said like social media is like you're gonna have a fear of missing out. And bro, that happens with everything, bro. People like, you go on Netflix, right? You say, oh, I'm gonna stop watching Netflix. You're gonna feel like you're gonna miss out on something. Like you're gonna cut off Instagram, now you feel like you're gonna miss out on something. Well, I swear the fear It's not like the worst fear in the world, but it's still a fear and it's real. Now, you gotta see social media as a tool, right? You gotta see social media as a tool if you wanna provide value, if you wanna do something. If you're just a consumer, then, bro, I'm gonna be honest, except if you get some knowledge, but even that, you can get knowledge from books, you can get knowledge from everything, because with social media, it just kills your attention. Like, people got no attention nowadays. They got like the attention span of like nothing, bro. They got like a 1-second attention span, and that is mainly because of social media. You get all this dopamine, all this information 24/7. Now, if you said— now, I'm not gonna say to you like to definitely quit social media, but if you quit, then your attention is going to be more free to do something else like reading. You know, instead of getting your knowledge on Instagram, you might get your knowledge on books. And once you get your knowledge on books, you're gonna get way more knowledge. I can tell you right now. Now what you gotta look at, right, is basically first, if you got goals— maybe your goal is you want to have meaningful relationships, maybe your goal is business, maybe your goal is You want to be a great athlete. Now look at your goals and look basically at the actions, right? Look at the actions that you need to put in for that goal to— what the heck is happening, bro? Okay, bro, look, look at the actions that you gotta put in to make that goal happen. Now if these goals, like for example, you want to have meaningful relationships, right? Now, if you really need social media to get meaningful relationships, then I don't know, like, I don't understand you. Like, yeah, I understand you might, you know, text some people and everything, but what you gotta understand, to have meaningful relationships, you probably got to, you know, meet the person in real life. Maybe you gotta do this and do that. If you go on your phone, it's just a fake relationship. It's just you talking with somebody that's just texting, not even calling it or anything. If you want to be a business, now that's different. Maybe you gotta post some content so you can grow your business, and that's different. The other thing is if you want to be an athlete, right, then maybe you need social media, maybe you don't. Yeah, maybe building a following will be good, but at the same time, maybe it doesn't like really matter because now look at it, let's say the athlete, what does the athlete got to do, let's say, to make it to the NBA? You got to be, you got to be better at basketball. Does he need social media for basketball to be better at basketball? Now that's, that's the question you gotta ask. Yeah, maybe if you're building a following or something, it's different. If you want to show off your skill and make money, that's different. But if your goal is one, is to be like the best basketball player, then maybe you just cutting off like that little distractions or those big distractions of social media, TV, technology basically is maybe going to leave you with more— not, it's not maybe, it's gonna leave you more free time on your hands so you can do more basketball and do more work. And maybe achieve that goal. Because looking at the actions to be a basketball player, you need to play basketball. That's your goal, is to be a better basketball player. Then you need to play basketball. It's not watching something. Yeah, watching maybe the NBA is gonna help you for like traits and everything, but you know, the actions that you need to put in is what is gonna make the difference. Now let's compare it to 2 people, right? Because a lot of artists do that. They, they don't have social media because they rather focus on the craft. Now that's what you got to see. Now let's say the first person is an artist, right? And he doesn't have social media and he just basically writes, right? Like he writes, he has deep concentration, he goes like deep in his work, he, you know, he's like deep in his thoughts and everything. He's really working, like he's working like with his art and everything because he's so like in tune with his work that, you know, he's like, he's almost like one with his work. And now let's compare him to, um, another person who is an artist too of the same level, but that person writes and then takes a break, goes on social media to engage with his audience, and then he, you know, he goes back riding again, and then he might go on social media, he might, you know, look at some people who uploaded something related to riding and everything. Now look, what's gonna happen is, you know, the first person who's, you know, deep working and everything, doesn't have social media. The thing that matters to him is his craft, okay? The thing that matters to the two people should be is their craft, because that's what makes them a good artist. That's what makes them a good artist, it's their craft. Now, who's gonna make the best craft? Like, it's the first one. Why? Because he has like this sort of concentration and he's going deep in his work and deep into his thoughts, and the other guy doesn't even get close to that because he cannot get deep into his thoughts and his mind and his work because he's always distracted by him like going on his phone and social media and just engaging. Yeah, that might seem productive, but that's not productive, to be honest. It might be a little productive, but compared to the dude who's working on his, on his, uh, book like, like this, and he's just deep and he doesn't have anything else in mind except for this work, he's gonna produce a better craft, bro. That's simple. Now It's the only— you gotta look at it like this. What is gonna make you— like, what actions do you need to take? And now look at social media, and if you need social media in your life for this, that's all. That's all I gotta say, bro. That's it for the vid. Hope y'all liked it. Comment, share, subscribe, and like some more. Peace.
