How To Improve Your Life For Your Future Self

Samir Gardner argues that social media, gaming, and streaming overload your dopamine system, leaving you bored and unfocused. He proposes cutting high-stimulation activities to 20% of current use: one YouTube video daily, two hours of Netflix weekly, no porn. Lower dopamine makes reading, exercise, and nature feel rewarding again.

Now what's good y'all, it's your boy Samir Gardner. Hope y'all doing good. So this is gonna change your life, or dopamine detox will change your life, and here's why, okay? You, in this society or in this day and age and everything, we are way too stimulated. But the thing is, we think like it keeps us happy. We think like, because just think about it, when you think about you watching a Netflix show, like it makes you happy. Because dopamine is a hormone, it's like a neurotransmitter, okay? So it makes you happy because you think about it, you think you're gonna watch a movie on Netflix. Now the problem with that is you don't do that like once a year, bro, you do that like 75 times a day, literally. That's the problem, okay? If we didn't have quote unquote instant gratification or dopamine activities near to us, we would have been doing things that is hard but satisfying, like maybe building a body in the gym, like maybe building a business, maybe making a project, something like this, so we can be satisfied. But now we're satisfied every second, but we're not satisfied for too long. Now, if we instead maybe build a body and do this and that, we're gonna boost serotonin, which is a feel-good hormone. When we do some things that, that is hard for a long time. But now we don't have the patience because of dopamine. We see with TikTok, with Instagram Reels, with YouTube Shorts, we see people like don't have an attention span. People cannot watch a video like this. Like, I, I'll almost like need to edit my videos so they can be like sort of like addicting, or not addicting but in a sense, but that gives more dopamine because People really don't have any attention span. And what I'm seeing nowadays, which is kind of off topic, but kids get phones, a phone and an iPad like soon in their life. And I'm like, that's gonna, I don't wanna be negative or something, but that's gonna kill everything about them. Like literally, when you're too stimulated, bro, you just hide from life and then life doesn't even become enjoyable or anything. You don't even want to do anything that's sort of like quote unquote cool or like quote unquote like, how can I say? Like for example, you might be someone who in the past used to love do sports and everything, but then you got an iPad and started playing video games like me. And then you started playing video games on Xbox or something. Then you got, you know, Instagram, you do this and that. Like you got, you be on your phone like 8 hours a day or something. What you gotta understand, you're literally like, literally your love for sports when you was a kid, you can't get it back. That's why dopamine detox is powerful, but it's not just an overnight process, okay? I have a plan, right? So it's called the Monk Mode Plan. You can watch my other videos on it. But basically with the Monk Mode Plan, what we're doing, we're doing like, We're gonna do 20% of the instant gratification activities that brings us like 80% of the pleasure. Okay, so what do I mean by that? For me, this is my plan. Okay, now you don't have to copy it. You can do it on your own. If you have a business, let's say you need social media, then you might use social media. But me, I do one YouTube video per day. I watch one YouTube video per day, 2 hours of Netflix per week. To be honest, I don't even watch Netflix, but I can if I want. No porn, no masturbation, bro. That's like one of the worst addiction. No social media. Now I'm gonna tell you, okay, all those things that I'm gonna say, like no video games plus TV, less music, they're really gonna change your life, but your life is gonna be boring, okay? Your life is gonna feel boring because you're not used to— you're not, you know, if you were always like not stimulated, you will find something that you can rely on when you're bored. But now that you're so used to just being on your phone when you're bored, you don't have anything to do. You don't have no one to talk to. You don't have like, you're not creative enough to sort of like create something so you can do. But if you were always in a sort of state of being bored, you will maybe start something like a project or business so you don't feel bored, okay? That's why when kids nowadays, like it's recent, but kids that have a phone at like 2 years old, but these people are not gonna do anything with their life. They're just gonna, but they're just gonna do the same thing as everyone and just be stimulated 24/7. Literally, I'm gonna make a video on that, okay? But no social media. If you have a business like me, bro, I still use Instagram like a bit, but I don't follow anyone. That's my trick. I don't follow anyone. So You know, if I need it for business, if I need it for information, I might use it. But don't, don't lie to yourself and be like, I need for information, and then you just scroll, okay? Like, don't lie to yourself, bro. That's, that's not cool. Video games, like, to be honest, video games is, it's something I gotta make a video on, bro. This stuff is so addicting. Like, it's so addicting because my whole childhood was just video games, so I don't remember too much about my childhood that was like sort of like quote-unquote fun, because all I thought that was fun when I was a child was playing video games. Because it's like, you know, games is pretty much like you— you know, it's pretty much like life but easier. It's pretty much like you're mastering life but way easier. It's especially if you're good at video games, especially if there's things that are involved like ranks, you know, when you play games and you evolve and you get new levels and everything. If there's things like that, if there's competition, if there's things, because we gotta understand we can do the same things in real life, but it's just harder, okay? And also video games, you're always with other people, communicating with other people. It feels like you're in a tribe, but in real life it's harder to sort of like build this quote unquote tribe, okay? Especially nowadays. No TV, we don't watch TV here. Less music. To be honest, if you want to keep music and let's say, basically, bro, you do what you want with the money, okay? I'm just giving you the blueprint. But music, to be honest, you can, let's say, listen to as much music, but reduce, let's say, for example, your Netflix time, okay? Like, that's what I do. And if you are new, like you're still someone who's spending a lot of time on instant gratification, like you might be playing the Xbox for hours, then don't just indulge in this straight away 'cause you're gonna fail. So just make it, just reduce your instant gratification. You're gonna do sort of intermittent fasting of instant gratification. Like we do intermittent fasting for food, now we're gonna do for dopamine, okay? It's the same. We're just gonna be in a state of, you know, like we're not eating, okay? But we're just eating less— not eating less in amount, but we're spending time where we're not stimulated, okay? And then maybe at night you get one YouTube video per day and 2 hours on Netflix per week. Like, that's— you're gonna use your stimulation, basically. Or maybe a bit of music, it depends. But really try to not scroll, try to not go just on your phone and do boring stuff. But to be honest, this is going to change your life. But as I said, if you're new, if you're still someone who's addicted to play video games or anything, social media, then just reduce, reduce your amount. Social media, go 3 times per day, and then go 2 times, and go once. It's gonna be easy like this, okay? It's gonna take time, but it's gonna be easy. I can tell you, it's— no, actually, it's hard, but it's gonna be easy for you once you achieve it. That's how I feel, okay? But bro, probably the most important thing is you really respect, like, make all a sort of like list with all those things, okay? And really don't try to go on your phone because when you're not stimulated, when you're bored, bro, I understand that it's uncomfortable, I understand that it's not cool, but bro, you're gonna find so much things about yourself, you're gonna find so much, like you're gonna be like, oh, maybe let me start this business, let me start this project because you're gonna have time to reflect with your thoughts, which is so important. Or maybe, I'm going to talk about it in the benefits, but look, uh, look, I'm going to talk about the benefits. Embrace boredom. You're going to embrace boredom like I'm just saying, okay? You're going to be able to be bored and be just with your thoughts, and that's so powerful, okay? That's so powerful. You also, when you embrace boredom, you're also more mindful because you pretty much have nothing to do, right? So you're just going to be like thinking about every little thing. Not, not, not in a sense of anxiety, okay? But You're gonna be thinking about like, oh, let me try to be mindful. Oh, let me smell this. Let me do that. Like, you're gonna— well, that's so powerful, okay? But for me, the most important thing, okay, is when you embrace boredom, you have reflection time. That's how, you know, I had the idea of starting a YouTube channel and doing things like this, or maybe reading this book, reading that, and then Like, it's so powerful. Also, when you're in this sport and you have more free time, which I'm gonna talk about, you're gonna be more grateful. Now, when you have nothing to do, like I said, you have reflection time. So you're just gonna be like, you're really gonna have time to just reflect on the things that you love. Like, literally, you're gonna be maybe spending more time with your mom, so you're gonna be more sort of like happy about it. Like, you're gonna be more happy that you spend time with your mom and that you love your mom, you know? Things like this that just makes life way better, okay? We gotta understand, 100 years ago in history, let's do history. 100 years ago, people were not stimulated because there was not much technology or man-made things. Just 100 years ago. Let's go even back. People had to chase things that were making them satisfied. Maybe it was building a family, maybe it was this and that. But nowadays we're too lazy to do that because We're too used to getting instant gratification first. We want the gratification first. We don't want the process. We want the instant gratification. We get the reward, we don't get the whole process. The process was just like you buying your phone to watch Netflix. There's no process in that. But if your goal was to make a family, maybe you would have to do things like be more mature, be more confident, build a body, I don't know. Be more healthy. Like I'm just saying some random stuff, but you see what I mean? Like you're gonna have to do things that are gonna take maybe years so you can really be more mature and confident so you can build a family and have a lot of knowledge. Maybe you're gonna read books so you can really like build your family. That takes a lot of time, but that is satisfying, okay? That is gonna satisfy you. And you're, it's easier to go for a goal like this that is satisfying when you don't have instant gratification. What I'm gonna tell you one more time is instant gratification wasn't, wasn't here like forever. We didn't have instant gratification forever. Maybe things like sex or whatever, like yeah, maybe, but still like we don't, we didn't have like those phones, just phone and everything. We gotta understand, this is sad because our phone, like our phone, everything is designed so it is addicting. Why are the people who literally invented those things don't let their kids do it. Don't even let their kids do anything with it. Like, they don't even let their kids— like, the creator of Facebook or something, I don't know, like any of them, they know how addicting that shit is, okay? So they don't let their kids even touch it. They themselves maybe don't even touch it because they understand that once they are addicted, then it's the end because they're not gonna like the same things, they're gonna be more depressed, they're gonna be more anxious. With the world, there's so many downsides of addictions like this. Like, we gotta understand, internet addiction is the number one problem. Shoutouts to Hamza, okay? Like, internet addiction is the number one problem of every person. Yes, yes, it is. No, it's not as worse as drugs, like everyone will say, but it's just accepted, okay? And just accept it to be on your phone 24/7. Just hide behind your phone. I can tell you 100% the people who are going to be the strongest, like mentally, physically, or anything, are going to be the people who just are not always stimulated, whether they're doing fasting or they're doing a dopamine detox, because they're going to have this drive inside of them. That's the number one benefit. You're always going to be having this drive from this dopamine detox because You're not stimulated, so you're searching for stimulation, okay? Also, you're gonna enjoy like the little things. Now, bro, this is beautiful because all the things like nature, all those things, you're really gonna see like what is the hype behind things. That's what happened to me. Like, I was like, I was forcing myself to go in nature because everyone said like, you know, nature is, you know, go in nature, you're gonna feel good. But once I got really on a strict dopamine detox, that's when I realized like, yeah, like nature is peaceful, like it's beautiful. And I understand people that say things like that. And I understood that people that say things like that are the people that are not stimulated, in my opinion. Or maybe they just have like sort of like a love for nature or reason why. But once also you're gonna enjoy, like maybe you don't play video games, you're gonna enjoy playing board games like Uno, things like this that they don't give that much dopamine. But what you gotta understand is when your dopamine is high like this and you reduce it like this, it's gonna be as fun as it is here, as it was here, okay? In terms of your activities. Like for me, for example, I used to, my dopamine used to be here, okay? It used to be like at the roof, okay? It used to be me playing video games, eating junk food, you know, being on social media, like, what else, like listening to music literally 8 hours a day, all those things, okay? And you know, it's fun, but it's not, I can't go higher, that's what I was trying to do, okay? And then once I lowered it, like, let's say my most instant gratification activity is one YouTube video per day. Now I'm watching a YouTube video that is, let's say for example, I'm watching Hamza Unfiltered, okay? And when I'm watching, like, he doesn't have any video, he doesn't edit anything, he just talks to the camera for like maybe 40 minutes. And I really enjoy it. Like, I literally very, very enjoy it. And it's that I enjoy it as much as when I was just playing video games, you know, all the way to all those bad habits that is right there, okay? Literally. So that's what you gotta understand. Lower your dopamine levels so you can have more fun from then. It's like when you're with sugar, you reduce your sugar, like you're gonna still be sort of like stimulated by sugar even though the amount is lowered. And with time, you're gonna be like, your amount is gonna be so low, but you're still gonna enjoy it as much as when it was high, okay? Like, you gotta understand this. When you enjoy the little things, That's all. Like, you get— you want to wake up, you want to wake up, you don't want to stay in your bed because you enjoy the little things. You, you want to do like that, the reading. For me, reading is something I'm looking forward to. Working out, it became more fun. Um, walking in nature became more fun. That's so powerful. The hard and boring stuff becomes easier and enjoyable, okay? Working out. Working out becomes more enjoyable and it becomes sort of easier because you have motivation. You're bored, so you're like, why not work out? You're not gonna play video games, so why not work out for 2 hours? Why not work out for 1 hour? Boring stuff like reading a book. Let me read a book. I have so many books I've read. I've read so much. I just read like a chapter a day and I've been consistently doing that. And literally, bro, I can't tell you, I've read so many books. I got so much knowledge. Like my videos, like if you ask me where I get my knowledge from, it's from books, books and YouTube. That's it. And yeah, life also. But the thing is just reading is enjoyable to me. I can't wait to see what he's gonna say. For example, my favorite sort of like subject about books is diet, okay? And when I read about diet, I'm like, man, I'm just like really like enjoying this. I don't know, I'm just so much interested. Like I can read like for— sometimes I read for 2 to 3 hours, and I take notes and everything. Literally, because I'm bored, why not do the things that's gonna benefit me? And I'm gonna live a better life because of this, because I'm doing things that are gonna benefit me, okay? You're gonna have a lot of free time. Now, the reason why you have a lot of free time is because when you're on your phone on Instagram, you waste so much time. And then you're like, oh, I don't have time to do this. I don't have time to start a business. You know, I'm just— I don't have free time, anything. But bro, you spend— when you spend 4 hours on Instagram, yes, you're not gonna have a lot. You're not gonna have free time to do this or that. You gotta understand that it's so much of your time, and time is the only currency, okay? I'm— shout out to Hamza Unfiltered. I watched his video, I completely understand. I was thinking the same. Like, time is the only sort of like currency, okay? In my opinion, it is, okay? I don't know for you. Yeah, money and everything, but what you're gonna understand, you work for me for money with time, okay? But the thing is, when you are always like in a dopamine sort of state, instant gratification state, you're losing your time, bro. You're literally with your mind, you're literally with your mind just watching. You're not even conscious, you're just in front of your phone, okay? Just even on your, you're just in front of your phone. You don't, you're not mindful or anything. Your thoughts are like sort of like controlled by what is in front of you. It keeps you addicted and it's sad, bro. That's probably the reason, the number one reason why you should do something like this is because you lose so much experience in life, okay? Just because you're on— yeah, you spend 4 hours on Instagram. In those 4 hours, you could have done something that was life-changing. In those 4 hours, you could have read a book that was gonna change your life, literally. So, you know, it's not about like being productive. It's about like, you don't— you are too stimulated that you're not even enjoying the little things. You're not, bro, like time is the only currency you're just literally giving away. Like it's literally like we're just giving you money away for no reason. It's the same thing. It's like, would you want me to just pick up, put your money in your bank account every hour? No, but you're doing the same thing with your time. It's not about you doing like 16 hours of business with your time. It's about you, You know, maybe that's why when you're bored, like, you can do things that are interesting. Like, well, it's so— how can I explain this? For like, when you have— when you embrace— when you're bored because you don't have anything to do, first of all, you're gonna embrace— like I said, you're gonna embrace boredom with time. But the thing is, you're gonna see, like, you're gonna be more connected to life. You're gonna start to do, like I said, more different things. That people back in the days when they didn't have anything to do, right? Like, they didn't have an iPad, they didn't have a phone, they didn't have a laptop. They couldn't do the video games, they couldn't do the YouTube, they couldn't do the Netflix. What did they do? They were creative and they created things to sort of like make them, you know, to sort of like have fun, to have like That's an experience. You create something so you can have fun. Maybe what they did was go to the farm and play with some animals. Guess what they learned? They learned about animals, they learned about farming, they learned about this and that. That's just an example. You're bored, so why not, let's say for example, go for a bike ride? You're gonna be spending time in nature, you're gonna be more fit, you're gonna be more like less stress. You're gonna be more able to do so much. Like when we just are connected to life, life is way better. When we're not stimulated, you're gonna do things that you thought you will never do, okay? Once you're on the dopamine detox. Now the last thing, you're gonna have more motivation plus discipline, okay? Now because you're bored, bro, you're gonna be bored. Like, I know I'm saying bored, but don't look at the word bored like a bad thing. It's a good thing for me, okay? When you're bored, quote unquote bored, yes, you're gonna be more motivated simply because you have nothing to do. So why not do the thing that is hard and satisfying? You don't have instant gratifications in front of you, so why not try to reach gratification? Why not try to reach gratification by doing the ingrained gratification? Which is gonna motivate you because you're gonna think about things like, oh, I cannot get instant gratification, so my only type of gratification I can get is from doing things that is gonna take a long time to do. So you're gonna be motivated because you're gonna be like, that's my option. I should maybe do something like working out and build a muscular body. You're gonna be like, Oh, then why not do it? Because you know you're going to realize that it's possible. You can do it. Like, you— that's why you're going to feel motivated, because you realize that you can do it. You're not, you're not, you're not sort of like— how can I say, bro? Just reduce your instant gratification. I cannot talk anymore. Reduce your instant gratification. Try this plan, okay? Just maybe switch it up. Maybe it's 2 YouTube videos per day for you, and then you reduce it. Personally, I think one day I'm gonna eliminate a lot of things in this, like literally, okay? But bro, embrace boredom, bro, you embrace success, to be honest. Literally, you embrace success in life and just being happy and everything because you're not stimulated, okay? Build yourself. Like, see, if you are addicted to video games, see life as a video game. Try to master the things, try to evolve, try to level up. Like, literally, bro, it's the same with real life. Now you can do it, but really, this is very, very important, okay?
