How To Really Master Anything

Your brain records every attempt you make, success and failure alike, and uses that data to automatically adjust the next one. A basketball player who takes thousands of shots builds an implicit memory system that corrects errors without thinking. This is how practice actually makes perfect.

Your brain is so powerful. Now, there's a section inside of your brain that actually kind of records everything that you experience, basically. Like, basically memories. So let's say you play basketball and you've experienced like 10,000 shots, like you shot 10,000 shots, you missed some and you got some. So basically what happens is every shot you're about to take you unconsciously remember all, like, your— not every shot, but you remember your failed shots and your good shots. And so it can kind of like guide you into really putting the shot into the net. So for example, let's say like last— most of the time, or last time, you shot too much to the left, so it didn't go in. Now you're gonna unconsciously shoot to the right because you're gonna unconsciously remember that last time you shot to the left, so you needed to shoot more to the right so it can go in the net. Let's say you failed the shot, you failed the shot and you shot too much to the right. Now your brain will remember that in a section of your brain, so next time you're about to shoot, you're gonna have an experience which is actually gonna be useful for your future uses. So for example, a basketball player, like an NBA basketball player, why can he enter like most of his shots while someone who's average, let's say played like 5 years of his life basketball, cannot make as— cannot even make like a quarter of his shots? What you gotta understand is when you shoot, like let's say this basketball player like shot a million shots in his life. Now his body, because of the past experiences, like I said, that are recorded in his brain, his body will unconsciously and automatically move to make the shot good. It's like basically you're becoming a robot. When you shoot, let's say, a million times, then what's gonna happen is, you know, okay, last time I missed because my finger was too much to the left. Last time I missed because my feet were not positioned well. So it gives you clue that, okay, now I need to do this. Now I know what to do so I can get that shot in. So the failed and the good shots are remembered by your brain. That's why an NBA basketball player, bro, it has so much experience, and that's why practice makes perfect.
