Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this week's Date your wife podcast. My name is Garrett J. Weitz. I am your host with the most. You're not even on a microphone. We can't even hear you. So just continue to talk, and we will not listen.
How did I know you were going to say the hostess?
No, I said the host with the most. So a lot of people have lots of advertising on their podcast. How you feel about this?
Had some hot coffee.
Well, that's the point. It's supposed to be hot, you know? Why do you think a lot of people do this?
Recently, I had somebody email me, and they're like, hey, so and so wants to do be a guest on your podcast. And I was like. And it was an agency or whatever. And I'm like, oh, okay, cool. I'm like, we don't usually do guests. And then, funny enough, I was like, oh, I know that person. And for some reason, she actually has me blocked on social media, which I have no idea why. So I'm gonna decline any kind of I'm gonna decline any kind of a guest on my show. But I just thought it was interesting that she was blocked.
So she blocked on social media, but she wants to be a guest?
Well, that's why I was like, her PR or whoever must have just obviously didn't know. Didn't know. But I was like, is it in the hair industry? Yeah. And this specific girl, I don't even know why she has me blocked, but.
What is her name?
Laced Extensions.
Laced Extensions.
Yeah. I don't know.
I'm like, that wouldn't work out because we're a natural beaded roast.
I know.
All right, well, anyways, we don't do ads here. There's a couple podcasts that came up recently here in the last couple months that I was listening to, and they've got, like, nine ads on every single one of their shows. And I get reached out to every single week by individuals across all of our shows asking if they can sponsor our shows. Can we give you ads? Can we do this? This show brought to you by care.com where you can find babysitters for your date night. This show brought to you by Care Coffee Maker and Starbucks.
This show is brought to you by DKW Styling & Wake up, Warrior.
Oh, maybe we are actually running commercials. We are running commercials. We are. We are.
We are.
Okay, listen, first off, we're gonna start off with a conversation about communication, but we're gonna discuss first the name known as Susan.
No, we're not.
We Are gonna discuss Susan. Susan communicates a little bit different than Danielle. We like Susan a lot.
Why does. No, why do they like Susan?
They don't even know who Susan is. Why don't you give them a short rundown int to Susan? Because in our marriage there, I am literally am married to two people. One is Susan, one is Danielle.
Apparently I have multiple personalities, but two very strong. One Susan, one's Danielle. And it was interesting because, like, the first. So I have a salon in Laguna beach called DKW Styling. And when I hired, like, two or three people at one time, and I was like, you know what, guys? We're having a mandatory business meeting at Tortilla Republic. It's just mandatory. But really I just wanted to, like, just chill and get to know him and kind of bond and whatever. So I know, listen. Yeah, this is. Shut up. So everybody, like, experiences me, like, one way. Like, I'm super like, da, da, da, da, da. Because in the salon, I'm just like, this is a mess. Clean it up. And I just. I don't have a problem with being, like, not on it. Yeah, just on it. Like, like sweet but direct. So anyways, people experience me very, like, focused and which I am. But I just. I like to have fun, too. So anyways, I just wanted to, like, get to know the girls. But not only that. Like, I wanted them to feel like they could let their guards down with me a little bit and have like a. I mean, this show is going to be on communication. So I wanted them to feel like they could just, like, communicate with me. And it was like I was. Yeah. And I was like a friend and a boss and whatever. So I take them out to Tortilla Republic, and they're all having a margarita. And the first thing I ordered was a line of shots. And they're like, okay. And so you know what, though? Sometimes when you have, like a drink or two, it kind of opens you up, but then if you take it too far, you just take it too far. And so Susan is the character that they actually. Stacey named me Susan.
Susan.
Susan is like my. So I'm like, a lightweight. So pretty much like two drinks, she's. That's a good Danielle. Two drinks is still Danielle.
Two drinks is Danielle.
Danielle, two drinks.
Doesn't matter. Shots, glasses of wine, anything after two drinks is Susan one Long island still Danielle?
Yes, yes. Two Long Islands, Susan.
Halfway through number two, Susan appears. Tell us about Susan.
So Susan. Susan quits the game.
Susan throws champagne glasses in five star restaurants and smashes them on the ground.
I don't know.
She does.
I get silly and then I'm always like, I don't know, you're funny.
Like, you actually end up doing.
You get silly and funny, but then.
We end up on the beach and we lose your high heels and you're doing sand cookies. Well, that is like doing snowmen, but only in the sand.
Yeah, Susan sometimes comes out, but anyways.
Susan's not that crazy that way, though. Like, what? I mean, like, that is. That's like Susan's more than just sand cookies.
This isn't. This isn't sex show, Garrett.
It's. Listen, there is sex with Susan and there is sex with Danielle. These are two radically different. They're both amazing. They're both amazing.
One is sex.
QQ is with Danielle.
We're talking about communication, hon, which is sexual.
Communication is communication.
Trying to skip the show if you need to.
Always bringing it to sex. All right, anyways, we'll turn this. Turn this show.
Turn this around. So Susan is a little bit more free spirited.
Do I have a Susan? Do I have a Susan in me?
You know what?
Do I have a Bob? I actually have Johnny. Let's call him Johnny. Do I have a Johnny?
I don't know.
I have a Garrett and a Johnny. Is there a Johnny in me? That sounds weird. Is there a Johnny in me?
You know what, though? I don't know. I hope so.
I hope there's not a Johnny in me.
I mean, I hope so. Oh, I don't know where we're going with this show. I don't know.
Literally. Is there another personality in me besides Garrett? Is there Garrett? And then there's Garth.
You are Garth.
And Garrett, it's like Darth Vader, but.
Garth, you're a Gemini. So I've always felt like you've always been very true to the Gemini. Two face. Like it was always like, I am two faced. Is it happy, fun Garrett, or is it like, I'll rip your face off Garrett? And there's very.
What do you call rip your face off, Garrett?
Yours is rip your face off Garrett.
That's it. That's his whole name. It's just direct to the bottom.
I can call him like, Ripper. No, Stripper.
Stripper. Ripper.
I don't know. Maybe we'll call. What should we call him?
Garth.
No, Garth Vader.
Garth Vader. Yes. Garth Vader. Is his name Darth? Darth?
No.
No. Okay. Anyways, there's this other version of me.
There's Dark Garrett.
Dark Garrett.
Dark Garrett.
And There's Light Garrett.
Yeah. So Dark Garrett can actually be very productive, but Dark Garrett can also be not productive. And same with Susan. Don't give Susan shit.
I know Susan and Dark. But here's a question. Can Dark Garrett and Susan exist in the same place?
They cannot.
No, they cannot.
They cannot.
So when you go to Susan, I must go to Garrett.
You always have to be Garrett.
And when I go to Dark Garrett, you must stay in Danielle.
Yeah. Cause I got a really, like, really.
If one of us is not in Dark Garrett or Susan, is there attraction that exists between simply Garrett and Danielle? Or is it the dynamic of Susan and Dark Garrett that actually brings about.
The spice that we both like both sides of each other? Like, I think I like.
I like both sides of you.
Yeah, I know you do, but I. And I also like both sides of you. I like that you could literally. I like both sides of you. I know. It's not that weak, Garrett. God. So anywho.
People. People in the comments, I was going and reading them, they say I'm a dick. Yeah. And you know what they say I'm a dick for though? They say I'm a dick because they say I cut you off all the time.
You do?
I do. Do you feel like I cut you off all the time?
Yeah, I just keep. I just. Yeah, I don't. I don't. Yeah, probably. I don't know what to say there.
All right. There's nothing to say. Here's what I can.
I think you like to, like, antagonize me a little bit and you think it's funny.
I like to poke the little Susan.
I think you. I like to poke your little Susan.
We're not even drinking, and this show's already, like, funny as shit.
Okay.
It might only be funny to us.
No one else is funny. I did have one shot, just.
All right, that was, like, five minutes ago. Nobody's like. That's not impacting anyone.
It's not.
Maybe it's the coffee. I got some magical coffee.
I don't know.
Okay, so the topic is communication. We're obviously doing that here. But one of the. I'm going to take on the first angle here. Okay. First angle inside of this topic of communication is this. We. What?
I have to giggle, so I'm going to reel it in.
Okay, you're in giggle mode now. I put you over the top. Funny. Is there a name for the funny one that just can't stop laughing? It's not Susan.
No, that's Danielle.
Danielle. She's just A giggler.
She's funny.
All right. She is funny. Okay.
Susan's aggressive and funny. Danielle's just funny.
Susan is very aggressive.
Susan's aggressive. Okay, keep going.
Okay, so communicating. A lot of couple struggle with communication. We struggle with communication. I'm gonna introduce an interesting topic here. Alcohol.
That's what we're gonna talk about.
No, not the whole time. We're just gonna start there, though, as an example. So you have two people who cannot communicate, and traditionally, individuals aren't going out. You have people who can go out and they can be social without alcohol, and you have people who go out who can only be social with alcohol.
I like both.
Right. I get that. But I'm saying, like, at a certain level, there is. In relationship and communication, in order for two people to be able to continue to take their relationship further in communication, both individuals have to open up more. But this is difficult because some individuals cannot open up in the state that they're in. They just cannot. And I would say that alcohol has actually played into allowing you and I to have deeper levels of conversation. You know what?
I used to go out on date nights when we were having issues with our marriage, and at the time, maybe we weren't really drinking, and we would just get irritated. And so sometimes it's like when you're with your kids all day and you're like, God, I want to. I want to scream at my kids, or I need to just chill out. And so sometimes it's just like, for me, like, having a glass of wine, and I'm like, all right. You know? And I can not be as edgy. So for. Sometimes it takes the edge off. But I will say there's, like, when you cross that line, there's the dark.
Side of it turns it over.
The dark side is Susan. And Susan seems fun. But every morning when I wake up after Susan enters my body, I'm like.
Danielle suffers for two days.
I suffer. I suffer with Susan.
Yeah, the line of Susan's.
But everyone else loves Susan. I'm like, I don't know if I love her. She's rough.
I love her. She is rough, and I love her. But here's the point I'm getting to, though, is a lot of women have a difficult time opening up, and a lot of men have a difficult time opening up emotionally. And often, and sometimes the only way that they can open up is to actually use some type of support to open up.
They're like, ooh. They have a hard time even having sex without drinking. And I'm Just gonna put this out there because we're on the topic of communication.
There are a ton of couples who do not have sex without drinking.
I know. And you know what's funny? So funny. I actually, good sex, to me is I'm totally sober to be. I'm. I know you love Susan. Yes. Like, I know you love.
Sex is great.
Yeah, it's more for you, but it's a porn star. It's fine. But, like, for me, sober sex, like, I could have a glass of wine. Obviously, that's not gonna do a ton to me, but honestly, sober sex is way better. I don't know. It takes. I have to. Like, it's. Yeah, it's really a lot better.
Do you have better orgasms when you have sober sex?
Yeah. Like, and everybody knows, like, if you're super. If you're really hammered. I. As a girl, I've talked to many women. If they're super drunk, we can't get off.
No.
Nope, you can't. Whereas guys, like, you can get off. I notice it takes you longer.
It does take me extremely longer.
But women, like, I've talked to multiple women about this. I'm like, if you're too drunk, can you get off there? Like, never. And I'm like. And that's where I've kind of come to with myself. Like, if I'm at that point where I know I'm too drunk, I'm This. I'm being very open on the show, by the way. But if I am, I kind of go out of my way to, like. Because I know you love. We'll call her Fun Susan. Whatever. But I also have fun in, like, almost like, playing in that role.
That role Susan. Right.
And so ye. And it's. But. But I don't even. Like, I don't really care if it's not beneficial for me that night, if that makes sense. It's more fun to just, like, have fun, but good sex for me, I'm pretty sober, to be honest. Okay, so, like, the week. So, like, Tuesday night sex is really good. Just saying.
I get it.
It's like. It's like. It seems like very plain Jane and traditional, but, like, you know, it never fails.
Is your orgasm much better than way better? Okay, so there's a. There's a. The point I'm getting to with the communication side, which I think you're hitting on really well. Here is. At some point, there's this. There's a line that can be crossed, but there's also a line that must be crossed for Individuals to get into a place of communication. We're just saying the alcohol is one piece that some couples use. What are some others? Because think about this. You think about where we were raised.
To enter into communication. We've talked about this on some of our other shows, but, like, forever, Garrett and I would. We'd try to have a conversation about tough things. And what would happen is we both get so heated that nothing would really. Like, we would just blow up. And then the next day, we would just kind of, like, those feelings would calm down. But we were both scared to collide again, because every time we'd collide over the same issues and then blow up, and it just felt like this weird circle over and over and over again. And so Garrett forever was like, we should do therapy. And I'm like, fuck you. I'm not broken. I'm not doing therapy. And I was really stubborn about it. I was like, I'm not doing it. You work on yourself. And, like, I'm good. And then finally, when it was this place where I'm like, I'm not happy, and divorce actually is kind of in my mind right now, so. So I don't feel good about closing the door unless I feel like I've literally done everything. And part of it was therapy for me. And that's when I kind of surrendered, and I was like, let's do therapy. And so for me, therapy was really, really interesting because I thought. I don't know. I don't know if I was afraid to be exposed or. A lot of people are scared to share their problems in fear of being exposed, only to realize that a lot of people have the same fucking problems. And so going.
Most people have the same problem.
Most people have the same problems in different variations. And so we go to a therapist. And what happened with me when we went to a therapist is I felt like I finally had a sounding board, and I felt safe to share things where I felt like, God, we have another person in the room. If he blows up this quick, then, like, oh, my God, she's gonna at least be sympathetic to me. And so it happened. Like, I was able to, like, approach how I was feeling. And I wasn't trying to trigger you, but I was trying to say how I was feeling or vice versa. But you tend to show your emotions more so than I do. It's not to say that I don't feel those things, but I don't. I don't show them as much as you did, or I don't flip my lid as quickly as you do. And so you would get triggered quicker than I. And then I felt like the conversation was never. Nothing was progressing forward. And so for us in communication, having a therapist and be able to have a sounding board, I felt like we pushed the threshold of communication and we were able to see results. And Garrett and I don't do things slow. We were like, wow, we saw results after two sessions. And so most people maybe go to a therapist once a month. We were going twice a week for six weeks. And it was like, the speed. The speed sessions. And then we kind of got to this place where I felt like we had kind of turned the corner. And that was so huge in our marriage, to be able to, like, turn that corner.
The corner was communication.
Yeah, but it was communication on a healthy level because it was like, we were able to work through some of our shit together. And so I felt like it was very beneficial. But I will say, in relationships, if communication gets past the point of, like, you're no longer mad anymore, that's a scary place to be in, too. And we've talked about that in some of our other shows. Like, when you're just kind of numb and you're like, I don't know if I care anymore. You know what I mean? And that's a scary place to be in, too. I don't know if we ever went to that place where we were just, like, calm and, like, I don't want to fight anymore. Like, we.
I think we were there a couple times. Like, we weren't there for long periods of time, but we were definitely there a couple times. So what I'm hearing then is that there's two sides, right? You have alcohol as a strategy, but that's really only going to get you so far. And then you have this other strategy, which is a form of also release, which is a game of safety. People tend to feel a little bit safer. The guards, a little bit. They have a glass of wine. They have two glasses of wine. The guard goes down, three glass of wine. People get ridiculous. Four, they start fighting again.
That's the thing is, like, when you go past too many drinks, then it can actually backfire. So you might be able to have one and be able to just relax and let your guard down. But then you have the angry drunk that were. Then that's. And that can be even worse than, like, sober somebody snapping. Do you know what I mean? It's no good because you're under the influence, and then it goes sideways fast.
So it's an interesting catch point. Because here's the thing, me and Danielle were raised in the Mormon faith. That's not something we practiced the last decade, but there's this path inside of that that was very difficult for us to find a way to be able to communicate. Communication was not something natural. It was very interesting because I thought it would just be easy to talk.
I felt like we had good communication when we were dating. And that's one of the things that I liked about you, is I remember thinking when we were dating, like we would sit anywhere and just like hang out for hours. Like hours, like four or five hours would go by and we were literally just hanging out and talking. And I had never had that with anybody before. And I always thought I'm kind of a quiet person. And so I just was like, that was just something that I'm like, wow, like I can sit here and like, I feel so comfortable with you and have that open communication. So I would say it was definitely, we had that, we definitely had the communication in the beginning of our marriage. But I think then we, when we lost it is when things got a little spicy.
When do you think we lost it?
Well, and I've shared this before, like, I think that men get married and all of a sudden they and women the same thing, but they, you snap into this role of like, I have to have life figured out right now. I'm married, I have a kid, whatever, I've got to be ultra focused. And what happens is you lose the connection in your relationship because you think like, I'm just gonna grind for like five years in that, in that five year span, you lose that connection that you had with that person that you wanted to spend your life with. And so it's, and then it's hard to build that back up. And I think that's kind of what is different about us is like I got married at 20, we were young and it was like 27. And even in the Mormon culture, like people are like, oh my God, like I'm 35 now. People are like, oh my God. Like you're still really young, but like in the Mormon culture When you're 20, it's like the standards are different. And it may be like this in other Christian based cultures or whatever, but it's like you're expected to like just figure, have life figured out. Whereas like in Orange county in Southern California, where we live, like where I'm at 35, where most 55 year olds are at, because I focus, I like had kids and I went, I got my trade school Done. And I got everything, all my ducks aligned. I got married and like, I just started the game super young. And so I have a lot of experience with just life in general.
I think we spent a lot of time in our first 10 years being married of just growing up where you watch a lot of individuals that we know now who didn't get married until their early 30s and played the single game all through their 20s and didn't deal with a lot of that. They had totally different experiences. They got to discover themselves and do all these things. There was some downside to that obviously too, and being in that place, which is getting stuck in your patterns. But I think a lot of what happened for us was we just, we didn't. We were both growing as individuals and having to re choose each other as a couple over and over and over and over and over again. And that only comes through communication. But I'm sitting here thinking, I remember our Vegas house when we moved to Las Vegas and my first company that I had launched back when we first got married. And I seriously can't even remember, like, I can't even remember like coming home. Like, come. I was so focused on work. Yeah, I don't even. I literally hardly like remember. I remember you, but I hardly remember you.
I remember like when we were first married. It's weird because I. We didn't have kids. And it's interesting when you have kids, like all of a sudden you feel like you need to have like more of a structure or a schedule and you gotta be home by 6 and you gotta take them to soccer and you gotta. It's interesting. When we were first married, we just both kinda grinded and worked. And I remember I'd worked till like seven or eight. Cause I knew, I'm like, he's not gonna be home till nine. But at the same point we didn't have kids. And so it was like if you got home at 9, we could like hang out from like 9 to midnight. But I remember you.
I'd be tired now by 10:30.
I remember you working. Yeah, like, I remember you'd be like so pissed. And you're like, well, I'm going to bed. And it'd be like 10:30. And I was like, well you. Because it's, it's 10:30 and you got home at 9:30, so I'm not tired and if you'd like to stay. And you were like, well, if you want to come upstairs. And I was like, I don't. Because we. There was no, there was no like Quality time or connection or anything like that. It was just like, you're the wife. I work all day now. You should be able to. Now you need to come upstairs and we're supposed to have sex every night. And I was like, mm, you can have sex with yourself. Because, I don't know, we were just like slowly kind of drifting apart. And I just. I think I was just like, no, I'm not tired. Why don't you stay awake with me? And you were like, I can't keep my eyes open. So it's like this balance of, like, it's good to be focused, but at the same time, if you're that person that's like creating ultra focus. Like, we still both work a ton, but now it's like, as part of our focus. Our focus is our relationship. Our focus is taking time to do date nights. Our focus is family time on certain days. And you just have to have. Have like, moments of that connection or otherwise you're just lost. And I used to think that you had to have like a 9 to 5 schedule. And like, Garrett needed to be home at dinner at like 6, 6pm every night. And that's just how it is. And now it's just like, no, like, whenever he gets home is great. But as long as we have our date nights and our family days, I feel like I have bits of time where we're able to kind of like, continue to stay connected. And you can tell now in our relationship, it's like we kind of know our formula. And when we. When we don't have time, we look at each other and I'm like, oh, my God. Like, I haven't. I feel like we haven't hung out in like a week, you know? And it's like something. It could be like. It could be like a week. Yeah. And that's what's crazy is people, like, months could go by and then you're like, I didn't. I don't know why I don't want to hang out with my spouse. And you're like, well, you and you. They haven't really been with you, or you haven't really been connected, or you haven't taken time to communicate for the last three weeks. You know, and then it can kind of compiles on each other. And then before you know it, you're like, I don't think I like you.
Communication, yeah.
Time, communication, it's all good.
So you've gotta have a decision. We're gonna wrap up the show. Cause we're actually heading on A date. Now we've gotta go pick up another couple, and we're gonna meet another couple. And it appears we have a single girl coming with all of us tonight, too. So anyways, there's a lot of us going out. Oh, you have scene.
You know what I was gonna say, like, make sure, because I know it's funny, because Garrett and I move so much, and we moved to new places, and it's not like we had, like, our high school friends and our college friends and our work friends. Like, we move so much. And so, you know what was good about that? As I'm thinking, we went out with each other, and I. For a while, I was like, we have no friends. But it was good because our relationship wasn't great. So when we had date nights, I think a lot of couples. And I know. In my experience, I know my sister in her last marriage, she'd always be like, hey, do you guys want to go out? And I was like, it was weird that they were always going out with another couple, like, and they were never alone. I was like, that's so weird. And so for us, when our marriage wasn't great, it wasn't. People will say, oh, we're spending time together, but are you spending time together alone? And so that really helped. Our relationship is not only having date nights, but having date nights exclusively with just one another. You know, like, at least one date night a week. Just exclusive, at least. And if you do two date nights a week, maybe you do a social thing, whatever. And Garrett and I were even saying this week, I was like, oh, my God. Like, we had. We've had three kind of, like, three date nights this week, but they've. They've been social events and with other people. And so I'm like, oh, my God. Like, I seriously just want to, like, tomorrow, like, on Monday, I'm like, I want another date night. I want to, like, Netflix and chill. I don't want to go with any other couples. I want to, like, have dinner with you and talk with you and connect with you and relax with you. And I don't want to be social. So I think it's important in marriage, if you're that couple that's constantly going out and that you feel like you have another function or you have another. You have some friends that are like, hey, you want to go out Saturday? And it sounds so fun, but sometimes you have to be like, no, I actually. I just want to hang out with my wife this weekend. And so, like, Garrett and I this week, I was like, oh, man. No more next week. No, no.
Just me and you, you know, Better lock it down.
We had, like, family in town, and.
We had Europe, and we were gone for a week.
It was just like, I feel like we haven't had, like, a wedding just like, us time. So anyway.
But we're gonna end this show.
We gotta go pick up friends.
All right? So here, as we said, don't go out with friends.
But no, I just wanted to say, like, people will be like, I have date night all the time. And I'm like, but do you have date night exclusively without kids and have a babysitter where it's just you and your wife and you go out, just you two and not just you two in a concert or not just you tune a movie. Like, you tune dinner and hang out and communication. Because you'd be surprised how much that actually does for your marriage.
Do you realize that this is probably the first time in two weeks that we haven't gone on a date night with just you and I? That probably has not been the case in a year.
I know. But I'm realizing that the fact that we always go out alone is abnormal. Most people go out with other people.
With other people. We never go out with other people. We're always like, no, obviously not never.
Because we're doing it again, too. Europe. We went out with your.
Oh, we went out with Todd and his wife.
Yeah. Oh, my God. We need to.
Holy shit. No more.
We don't want friends.
We've gone straight. No more. No friend.
Us.
Fuck friends. No more friends.
I mean, I like having friends. There was a point in our date nights where I was like, I kind of wanted to go out with friends because I felt like our relationship was pretty good. And I was like, wouldn't it be fun to go out with friends with some friends?
Now we're kind of in this. Now we're kind of in that phase.
But now we're in that phase, but we also need to, like. I feel like one date night needs to be you and I, for sure. Once a week, you and I. Can you commit to this?
I am 100% committed to this.
